[Q] How is 2.3.7? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

2.3.7 was out on September 20 -- why nothing about it here? Anyone tried it already?
P.S. I am not happy with my 2.3.4, XXJVP at all. It hangs, com.adroid.phone keeps crashing, phone is not much responsive and it all gets only worse and worse over the time. Now I am thinking, should I look towards 2.3.7 or should I wait until 4.0 comes? However, I guess 4.0 will come to I9000 with a significant delay, right?

Why not try 2.3.5?

Source? Imho 2.3.5 for I9000 is the latest available version - even for the nexus, just 2.3.6 is available...

btw, I didn't say 2.3.7 for I9000. Here is the German article mentioned from German wikipedia about Android:
http://www.appdated.de/2011/09/nexus-s-4g-bekommt-android-2-3-7-update-fur-google-wallet/
Then it comes down to this promo video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DsaJMhcLm_A#!
I can't find more details to be honest

CM7 is 2.3.7. coz is build from nexus sources ... and i thing there is nothing extra for i9000 users ... we dont have NFC chip ....

btw, what about "No tethering" bug / feature in this 2.3.7 ?

These updates hardly matter. We already have few ROMs of 2.3.5
Now we want ICS....and our device is very capable of running it

I don't build any illusions regarding Samsung's official releases. They are rather out of scope until Summer 2012 ;-) No joke, SAMSUNG sux big big big time on rolling out updates.
My concern are ROMs that are created by community heros. When'd you expect such?

I agree to some of your point but telling that samsung sucks in update is incorrect.Galaxy S has got updates more frequenty than any other android phone. We already have 2.3.5 leaked stock firmware and in comming days u will some 2.3.6 updates as well.Comming to other brands, take example of htc, they are still on 2.3.4.Motorola donot give more than 1 update to phones and forget about LG(they think that customers must be deprived of updated,so that they can ultimatly sell thier mobile industry)

I think we will have to use CM7 to get a taste of 2.3.7...

OK, and what are your bets about availability date for ICS on I9000 ?
(unofficially of course, there is no much sense to discuss official one)
UPDATE: OK, I'll try CM7 with its 2.3.7 and that's it. It will probably heal my SGS for next months ...or will brick it

After being hesitant for a while ( losing the whole samsung apps/feel ) ive finally made the jump to CM7. I must say its really stable and smooth, its packed with lots of options and tweaks .. so far im simply loving it. I think my search for the best custom ROM is done .
Btw, Cyanogen mod 7.1 is out for the i9000, which is considered as the first "stable" version to run on the i9000.
Also, im pretty sure cyanogen will get us ICS way before Samsung does.

I cannot really bet but after Nexus s recived ICS then it will hardly take 15-30 days for devlopers to port ICS to galaxy s because both nexus s and galaxy s is running same hardware except camera chip.

Well from what I understand, manufacturers are not required to release android updates to devices which are older than 18months. Anyone know the exact launch date of the sgs? So I guess it depends what the age of the sgs is by the time ICS is released. Even if we don't get the official ICS, I'm not so sure whether we will get it through cyanogen due to the sgs ram limitation. From 2.1 to 2.3 the average amount of free ram on the sgs has come down quite a lot, to a point where through average use you can end up in a situation with only 30mb free ram (depending on your rom and kernel and what apps and Widgets you use) after a days use. ICS will obviously have even higher memory demands than gingerbread, so the ICS experience on a sgs if it is provided unnofically by cyangoen may not be very smooth and user friendly.
That's just my opinion though, I'm no expert! And obviously I'd love for us to get ICS on the sgs
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

The most stable version I experienced till now is XXJPY. I'm using it for more than 2 months with no problem.

I guess the only way I'll ever use the new version will be through a ROM, probably same for many other people in here.

As of this moment, only rottohammer and shep201 have custom roms, with shep's one being only able to install through the clockworkmod recovery ( which is not stable atm ) , and rotto's through odin but doesnt really offer too many things except pre-rooting. You have to be patient, in order to get a working clockworkmod recovery and then devs' will surely cook something for us.
I agree. I think it is all sort of held up by Clockwork right now but once that is sorted it will be game on!
I made a custom ROM for Odin based on JM6 with preroot and circle battery. But it's mostly for Russia (russian book store, etc).
I was also wondering if there were any custom roms of perfomance roms currently out
where did u get the circle battery replacement?
no atm there are no (real) custom roms available!
but i'm cunrrently trying to port the elegant steel theme to the galaxy tab but its harder than i thought! and i'm playing with the kernel sources and maybe i manage it to do something for the performance
ok, i think i maybe confused then, when i root my tab using z4 root. What will that do? Will is install a custom ROM or only root my tab using 2.2

Dunno where this one got the beta1 and beta2 naming for the gingerbread roms. He must be a samsung technician or samsung employee knowing these stuffs And also what he means with released I would like to know?
Nobody knows if it's a beta currently. The only person I have seen who said it's being installed at service centres WAS a samsung techie..
I still think it's a beta, or there would be reports about kies installations by now. For all we know, there are many things broken with this version that are lessor used.
Jvk feels like a finished ROM to me, at least an RC. Try juwe ROM which has root, cwm and lagfix

Since I'm new I'm not allowed to post links, but just Google
'engadget samsung galaxy s gingerbread official'
and it's the post called
Gingerbread update for Samsung Galaxy S to start rolling out in mid-April
I have i9000 2.2.1, so I'm very eager for this Looks like we'll be getting sometime in the next couple weeks, at the outside (considering today is exactly mid-april).
Samsung have Manual >Gingerbread version> release date 15/4/11 on the support site now .
That is Manual as in pdf .
jje
Well yes, there is since today a new manual on the support site, but is pretty much the same, just with an different layout and some other additional (none important) infos.
But i can't find anything Gingerbread related there.
edit
Nevermind, i was surfing on the german support site, and not on the uk one.

[Q] Which is the most stable rom for Galaxy Note

One of my friends wants me to root and flash a new rom to their Note but I have no idea which rom (ICS or GB) is the best.
Now before anyone flames me I just want to ask your opinions on the latest developments. Clearly I am asking for opinions. I also do not currently have this device.
Sent from CM9 Cornerstone Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Rocket gb is the most stable.
All GB Roms are very stable, and you won't go wrong if you flash any of them.
OTOH, ICS is not so stable and requires high user maintenance and fixing. I'd stay away from early ICS releases if I were you.

Cool thanks. Any recommended Rom aside from the one mentioned before as in what makes you go to it. I do understand about AOSP Roms and how unstable they can be in the beginning. Also is anyone planning to port CM9 to the note?

Well, basically there are two types of custom GB roms ATM.
1. Light ones (much of the Samsung and other crapware removed)
They are fast and battery efficient. Some users don't like them because of the missing features. I prefer them, though: anything you need can be installed after flashing.
The light Roms are
Cassie's XL
Chrack's Small
2. Full Roms containg almost everything a stock Rom has
These Roms are somewhat (but not much) slower than the light ones, and their batter life can be slightly shorter if you do not monitor what your multitude of apps is doing behind your back, if you get my drift.
You'll find a full list of Note Roms with links here:

[Q] What mod?

The Galaxy Note is my first Android device, after enjoying a couple of years with the absolute freedom of Maemo. It was a sad day when Nokia decided to ditch MeeGo, and go for Windows Mobile. And a couple of months ago my dearest N900 decided to call it a day.
Now I think I had enough of the Stock installation from Samsung (after flashing the German Stock ICS).
Yesterday I flashed Criskelo, and it was an OK experience, but not quite what I was looking for.
My wishlist for a ROM:
1. SNote, SPlanner and the E-Mail app from stock.
2. Focus on speed and battery.
3. As minimalistic as possible (Drop all the eye-candy)
Now for the question: Which MOD is matching my criterias, or atleast as close as possible?
And yes, I have read page up and page down in the Dev-section, but a lot of the ROM's have a content-list which is very incomplete. So I'm asking you, who have been using mods for some time, and perhaps have been trying a lot of them.
And in light of the possible LPY-bug, which might have caused a couple of hardbricks (Or was it just 1 hardbrick?), I rather not flash through all of the mods.
Hi
Ok, im not recommending this rom just because im using it. I have tried all kinda roms around and finally im using Darky Rom for like few months now and it works great.
For galaxy note current stable rom is :
Build : DarkyROM_Note v 3.4.1 Extreme Edition
Kernel : NoteCore 0.1
but the only thing is it runs n android 2.3.6. ICS rom is still under development. Their kernal is in-house developed and most of the thunderbolt scripts removed. Battery life is way too great. 24hrs connected 2G network and my battery lasts 1day 6hrs+
give it a try. u wont regret..

So...What about Jelly Bean, Android 4.1?

Well, Google has announced an incremental update to Ice Cream Sandwich, called Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and it's Phone and tablet UI like ICS.
Little info here.
http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html
So, it's using ICS and Honeycomb driver model, but there are other things like the so-called "LAG free" that seems to be a real change inside android, but I think devs will get a workaround. So, is possible to port this new update?

Maybe, hope that ...
Right now we still haven't stable Cyanogenmod 9 (ICS),
But I think if we -hope soon, then we could have a stable Cyanogenmod 10 (Jelly Bean) .. What ????!!!! Cyanogenmod 10 !! looks good
Thanks for news
Best Regards
Seems it's not a bug update..close to ics, so just might happen.
Don't forget about hardware limitation.
We won't get all the features from Jelly Bean. Even ICS, we won't.
I think CM9 is already a magical ROM coming for us.
To have a Jelly Bean, it's quadratic magic! lol.
Let's hope we have CM9 without bugs and then AOKP too.
For now, it's more logical.
We have not got ICS till yet and you are talking about jelly bean
Still a long way to go

Like I knew somebody is going to ask is somebody going to port JB to our device... it does not give us THAT much improvements to spend time on development.
And, what everybody said above, even ICS is not usable (no camera, lack of RAM, lots of bugs). Luckily, i'm happy with my Gingerbread CM7.2, and i'm just watching the situation closely

Don't get over-excited guys, ics barely works on gmini right now due to low ram *edit* low EVERYTHING, and I assume that jellybean will simply be more resource-demanding, so just pull your horses until we get properly working ics m'kay? To be honest, I don't believe that we will ever get cm9/ics as stable as cm7, simply due to hardware limitations of galaxy mini.
Next year this phone will be the worstest of the worst... cmon, 600MHz processor in 2013?
Forget about Jelly Bean, we still have bugs in ****ing gingerbread (camera orientation), ICS is not stable enough too...
it is possible to make a buggy android 4.1 port from gnexus ...
but i dont think that that will be cool xD

Galaxy Nexus is ARMv7. Just wait for the source.
Question first...Why port something we know won't ever be able to run stable on our device because we don't have drivers which is kept close sourced?
And also that drivers just can't be compiled as with happened to the Adreno200 drivers for ICS to armv6.
You need to rewrite the whole code, possibly even write new code to drivers for our device. And I doubt the people who make these drivers and publish these sort of stuff want to spend any extra work on trying to make it work on our devices.
We'll be stuck with Gingerbread guys. End of story.
No, JB is a "small" update. Drives from ICS will work fine on JB. So, it may even be a little faster. Anyway, I will try to build it when source comes out.
sry not the kernel, it needs to be modded -.-

Lol, show me one advanced user that still has HTC Dream as his main phone? After all it has 528 MHz CPU (slow POS just like our mini), and has been released 2 years (or more?) earlier than Galaxy mini - how can you compare that?
And.. why would one buy an HTC - they are so ****ing complicate to flash - HBOOT, fastboot, bootloader downgrade, firmware downgrade, using the command prompt in windows - nothing here on Samsung
