[Q] Data Connectivity Issues - Motorola Droid Bionic

For some reason I keep losing data connectivity on my bionic. I live in a semi-rural area where sometimes I have 3g and sometimes not. My issues is that sometimes when I leave a 3g area and then return to the 3g area, my phone never connects to it and I end up having to do airplane mode on/off to get it back. Is anyone else having this issue or are there any fixes?
Stock rom, rooted if that matters

I have a 4G plan and it switches back and forth between 4G and 3G.
Do you have 4G, or ONLY 3G?

That's a known issue. If you call VzW they'll tell you Motorola is supposed to be releasing a patch for that sometime in November.
I think it was discussed somewhere in this forum already as well. I was looking for the thread but didn't find it yet.
What I'd like to know is, does going to a custom ROM remedy this issue?

So far, I wouldn't say any ROM has remedied it, though a few to seem to reduce it a bit, but that may be coincidence for some and not true across the user base.

This also occurs if you go between being connected to a wifi network and then to 3g or lte. Really annoying.

Poor Data Service

Anyone experienced their revolution hanging for 20-30 seconds before going to a web page or performing a Google search? Seems my phone does it constantly and a friends does as well. He's on the stock release and I'm rooted with decrap.
I've noticed that my data stream is a little unstable being in a 4G area. I stream lots of music in the car and 4G doesn't seem to nearly as stable as 3G...with similar signal strength...especially if it auto-switches from 4 to 3, then back. I've put it in 3G only mode and it's more stable.
Randomly notice this as well. There have been 4g issues for a while now, but my fascinate seems to load pages faster when both are on wifi.
Whoops, forgot to mention that I am in a 3g only area. I have a tbolt and revolution, constantly going to the tbolt for data. Kinda disappointing.
Have this issue as well... But we are having network issues in our area which makes data unusable for everyone.
i've got this issue and i live in a 4g dense neighborhood in los angeles. had it since day 1. very disappointing.
Any fix for this? I have the same issues in the riverside ca area. Data throughput seems to be fine netflix and hbogo stream perfectly.
My guess is that a radio fix will have to come from LG to help 'stabilize' the data connections for 3G, 4G and auto-switching between them. Once in 4G (or 3G), data integrity is good for me.
Decrap has a known 3G slowness issue, if you go to the last 2 or so pages of the thread in development you'll see some chatter about it
thecubed is releasing an update early next week
If it's really bad, I'd suggest switching to the stock rom for a bit till Decrap 1.2 comes out
I'm rooted with stock ROM and having the issue. Tried my SIM in two other revos with the same issue.
The issue is indeed confirmed, as I have the same (infuriating) problem on my unit also.
Hopefully by the end of next week I should have a fix. I believe it lies in the way that LG bonds the 3g and 4g interfaces together to provide a single "cellular data" interface to Android.
However, I could be wrong, but either way I'll be on to something
Woot... You do some damn good work.
awesome cubed U rock. This is for the wifes phone so I'm going to wait until there is a fix before I root it.

Has anyone else been having problems switching from 3g to 4g? Mine gets stuck on 3g sometimes and I have to do the airplane mode trick to get it to do anything. I can't even send text messages. I live in Hollywood so I don't know what the problem is..

Same here.. I am in NE Ohio, and traded from a Thunderbolt where LTE was more constant, but even when switching out from WiFi to 4G/3G there is some lag time. The Thunderbolt Radio had to be flashed separately but was tons better.

Not picking up signal

Does anyone feel like their revo doesn't pick up signals very well? Friends phone is picking up 3G just fine where I am but I only get 1x. Everything is enabled should be working fine. This has happened before where others are getting signal but I can't. Could it be anything related to GV? Anyone else notice this?

No issues here.

Could it be ROM related? Could it just be picky on my phone?

Verizon has been having some outages that's for sure..
Don't think it's rom related.

If you take your Revo and put it into CDMA (3g) only mode, you will likely get the same signal as your friend, assuming he is also on Verizon.
Verizon 4g has been having issues for the past week. On one min, off the next. I pay for the HotSpot feature and I am on a trip visiting family, where I really expected my 4g HotSpot to be reliable and handy. Instead, it has been so bad, that my parents 768k DSL internet has been faster and more reliable that the 4g. I did switch to CDMA only mode and was able to get 1.5Mbps, but with 3g, when I call comes in, internet/data is gone until you end the call. Not what I am paying for. I did get a refund for this months of service though, after calling Verizon.
The only issues I've come across on the Revo for bad signal is my WiFi signal. I can be within 30 ft of a router and have less them 50% signal, while my computer, tablet, and any other WiFi devices have full signal, even further away.

So even though 4G isn't available, having it in LTE mode will effect my connection?

My theory on why it isn't ROM related is we can't even change radios in the ROM its the same radio that would be there stock

Yes, because your phone is going to be seeking a 4g connection, not a 3g, whereas keeping it in CDMA/3g mode, forces it to only seek a 3g connection. I have had enough experience just in this past week that CDMA only mode provides a better 3g connection than I would get when dropping into 3g from 4g. Also, the Verizon tech stated the same effect would be true when she recommended me to switch with the current problems to gain a more stable data connection for my hotspot.

Make sure your PRL and radio are the latest versions. And if all else fails you could try Googling an Airave machine.

are we talking fm radio? sry for stupid question...
Not FM or AM radio - we are talking about the firmware that runs your phone's radio antennae which responsible for cellular reception
get rom manager and go to peter alphonso's thread. He's got all the radios in there....and no, this is not a radio, like an fm radio. this is the driver that provides the signal for your phone's reception...it's just called a radio. You may hear it referred to as a baseband occasionally, as well.
Some of the nexus 3g/4g users use something called Airave from sprint , it supposed to increase your signal strength pretty good. Hook it up in the home & you'll get some good signal. I don't have one atm. Some of the user called sprint saying their signal suck & so why pay for something you can't use, as in weak signal. So then the nexus user got theirs free. I'm not really sure if theres a charge to it or what, but I don't mind calling some time soon to get me one. Lol, my signal sucks as well & I'm on the latest radio, etc.
I think he is referring to this phone having a weak signal all around. I have the same issue. I had a Samsung Moment b4 the NS4G and when I sit in my living room, I used to get full 3g and full wifi with the Moment... but with the NS4G, I get almost half wifi and 3g goes from half to 3/4 on the signal meter. There are postings online reporting that Samsung used an under powered chipset for this phone, in order to get better battery life. I have an Airave from Sprint in my home, and it does work with the 3g signal... if I'm in the same room as the Airave, I have full 3g, but like I said b4, the signal gets real weak the further I get from it. (My wife's EVO 4G shows full wifi and 3g strength when placed next to my NS4G)
As far as I know, there is nothing we can do about the signal strength. I have tried several different roms, and many different kernels with this phone, not a single one touches the 3g or wifi signal issue.
i get great signal strenght, tmobile in nyc.
there are also some build.prop edits you can do too. anyways, heres the radio thread from the development section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884

Dropping to 3g

I switched back to this phone after having the galaxy 4 because this is a better phone for the most part.
That being said..this phone does poorly hanging on to LTE with Sprint. In areas that have steady 4g coverage that my iPhone 5 and s4 would display 4g, the One often inexplicably drops to 3g, requiring a switch to airplane mode and back again.
I actually used the airplane mode to force 4g like 5 times today.
I know somebody else has to see this issue

I have a thread where I'm working on trying to tweak some epst settings to fix some of these issues. Haven't gotten to the LTE stuff really yet.
D3rped out Beastmode! HTC ONE!
Funny thing is I was thinking of posting this in your thread, but I didnt want to derail it.
I think part of the problem stems from the One not scanning for lte as often as the other phones. I drop data completely quite often and it takes a while to pop back up. And when it does, it's 3g, not 4

It wouldn't fix it but if it's just a configuration issue. Example if it's designed to drop a signal sooner than say the S4 then tweaking some settings COULD fix it. That's all I'm looking to do. Try to fine tune some settings specifically for sprint and this phone.
Edit: I also know that sometimes that can do more harm than good (like maintaining too weak of a signal and have no data connection to speak of) but. Doesn't hurt to try!

Thought I was done with the airplane mode dance as well, coming from the EVO LTE. Ah well.
Oddly, I've had the phone stay on LTE far more often using AOSP, same for my old EVO LTE, which it's usually the opposite no?

Airplane toggle is kind of pointless. The phone grabs LTE Just fine.. It just won't hold it. Especially when you start something that uses data. I've been in areas where I know the signal drops with this phone with it sitting in the dock. But as soon as you run a speed test or download an app it drops to 3G..In all honesty the only way to keep this stupid thing stable is to disable LTE completely and run with crap 3G until your area is heavily saturated with LTE because when your in the middle of doing something data centric and it switched to 3G you have to pretty much start all over or re open the app. Never had to do this on my Note 2.

I have experienced this too but it happens to me when I am driving home from work which is a 2 hour drive the job site I am at has lte and it holds a signal all day. On the way home I will lose data in certain locations every day the exact same ones cause obviously sprints lte is still being worked on but I think it maybe be because they are upgrading towers cause in the past month I get lte in more and more places driving on I94 from Detroit to Kalamazoo and also the job site has lte everywhere and before it was spotty

This happens to me and my 1st HTC One and my current HTC One and my co workers HTC One no matter if we're standing still or driving..In areas I know for a fact are not being currently worked on..It only happens on the outskirts of an LTE Signal. But like i said earlier, these are places my Note 2 has never ever dropped a signal..I've debated so many times going back to my Note 2 but I just can't do it.469 DPI and a screen I can see in daylight has spoiled me rotten...Only logical thing to do is go to AT&T and buy the HTC One there but that would do a number on my wallet so i'll stick around with Sprint until winter and see what they can do.

Keep in mind the signal strength you see is NOT 4G even if you're getting 4G.
There are tools to monitor 4G Strength (search google play).
This phone is horrible with weak 4G around. Bounces in and out and it's very slow at doing that.
As I drive through known 4g coverage areas my note 2 grabs 4g with no issue. My HTC one woould stay in 3g. Frustrating knowing I'm giving my Note 2 to my nephew. Good thing 4g is only in small spots around Southern CT.

I cannot imagine how awesome this phone would be with strong 4g. I use verizon razr hd for my work line and 95% of the time it has a 4g signal, and thats the phone i always reach for when on the road although i love my one so much more...seems sprints roll out is not as fast as I anticipated
I live on the border of an official 4g area (Los Angeles) and I seem to go back and forth from LTE and 3g at home all day long. But, when you do get LTE, it is amazing. Fastest LTE speeds I've ever seen on any carrier. I easily get 25/10 and a great signal in LTE zones.
I have often wondered how my phone could bounce around from 4g to 3g then sometimes to no.data connection all while sitting in the same spot. Is that a network or a device issue? If it's a phone issue do I have a right to get a different one, even though I have had this for over a month

Definitely a network issue..Don't waste your time getting a replacement because it will be the same...Weather and humidity come in to play here as well
This is the story of my life since I got the One. People keep telling me that the S4 has the same issues and the problem is Sprint, but of the 3 people I know with an S4 none of them have this problem where I live. Once they are in an area with 4G, their phone stays on 4G. With the HTC One it takes forever to pick up 4G and once it decides to drop 4G it will take forever to pick it back up unless you toggle airplane mode.
The phone is damn near unusable in Johnson City TN because the 3G is way over capacity on at least half the towers in the area, and if the phone can't hold on to the 4G signals that I know are there then it's basically a paperweight. I really hope there is an update soon.

Spotty 4g lte

Just got the One, coming from s2, and love this phone. However I'm on Sprint lte now, and get very spotty coverage. It constantly switches from3g to lte, sometimes no data at all.
Of course this is a sprint issue, but is there a Rom or other ticks that may help get more consistent lte connection?

Not really. I had to lave Sprint after being with them for 11 years due to my phone(s) not getting calls and poor network performance. In Dallas they really messed up big with Network Vision updates. Just my opinion.
Doesnt matter what hardware or software your on if the network is the problem your phone wont make it better.
Untill they get a handle on the system issues its not going to get better.

It's been going on for me since the beginning of July. It's not your phone, it's the awful network. The network has gotten so bad here, my local new station did a story on it since so many people were complaining. Normally I'm not a fan of stuff like this cause the media tends to exaggerate but in this particular case it's as bad as they say. I can have the tower in site and my phone will dump between X/1X/3G/LTE. Constant dropped calls, cutting in & out, unusable data, etc. I have been with Sprint for over 10 years & the network is literally unusable as it stands. It has been getting better over the last few weeks but it's still awful. I can understand some disruptions in service but this has been an ongoing thing for months with no end in site. Poor planning on Sprint's part. As far as LTE being spotty, until LTE gets turned on 800 it's going to be garbage. HTC one doesn't support LTE over 800 which at the moment doesn't matter since it's not on yet but I'm hoping by the Spring new hardware will be out & LTE on 800.

if your on a sense rom, ##data#, click edit, enter MSL (if you dont have it, sprint should give it to you), you will see LTE settings and LTE scan settings, (dont remember exactly what they're called) Lower both those numbers to like 30 and 5 or something like that, it will scan more often and while connected to LTE should stay connected longer on a weaker signal....there is a thread on it somewhere...
