[Q] I can't install Amazon app store - Nook Color General

I just rooted again after boot looping. 1.3 and using Manual Nooter per instructions in that thread, fixed permissions in RM, USB debugging is checked. I'm up and running just fine, however I can't install Amazon App Store. I click on the .apk in the downloads of my browser and I get two choices to use, " App Installer", and "Package Installer". I try App Installer and I get "The application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "UnArchive" the application to try again. How do I "Archive" and then UrArchive" the application?
I try Package Installer and I get "There is a problem parsing the package".
I've reset and rooted numerous times because of boot loops issue, which I'm pretty sure I've solved, but every previous time I was able to install Amazon App Store.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Well I am not an expert by any means but it sort of sounds like a bad file have you tried deleting it and re-DLing it? You can DL it right onto the nook via email for example, Amazon will email you the link. If it's any problem other than that then it's way out of my league. Hope that works!

I've downloaded the .apk numerous times with stock browser and Opera Mini, and tried downloading it from the email amazon sent me with the download link. Same issues with all attempts.

Have you tried opening it with a file browser like Astro? Also try downloading the apk to your PC and then copy it to your Nook via USB, the Download on your Nook could be getting screwed up.
Also if you have ADB setup you can try running the command "adb install [insert apk filename here]" to try to install the Amazon Store.

Did you check the "Unknown Sources" box in Settings -> Applications?
I don't mean to be condescending, but you didn't mention it in the OP.

yes, unknown sources is checked. I figured out how to fix problem. I moved .apk's to system/app using Root Explorer and using Package Installer, they installed just fine.

Have the same problem and has heard the same soln. Root explorer is $4 at Android Mkt. Anyway to get it free ?

I paid for it. There may some other file managers that you can use, but I just dropped the dough for Root Explorer.

For what it does it is cheap for $4. We need to pay for apps or else developers will quit building them.

Unless I am mistaken this does nearly everything Root Explorer does. At least I think I've heard that before. Having paid for and more importantly become familiar with Root Explorer, I have't actually tried it. But I do know it comes HIGHLY recommended.

Please Help - This doesn't solve my problem
Just rooted 1.3 again with both manual nooters. Everything is working fine now but I want to download Amazon App Store from The web.
It downloads fine but wont install - gives me a "your phone is protected" warning box saying that I should go to Settngs/Application and check the box to allow for outside downloads.
I DON'T HAVE AN APPLICATIONS OPTION UNDER SETTINGS. I had one when I was running cm7 - but not for a simple 1.3 manual nooter.
I have looked everywhere I can think of - can anyone help or have a work-around?

Nook Color Tools

I'm having trouble installing this...I'm using root manager, and placing the apk into the system/apps folder. When I click on it it says installation blocked. And the reason I'm installing, or trying to install nook color tools, is so that I can change keyboards. So I'm stuck in a maddening circle.
Anyone want to show me the light? I don't know why I'm having so many issues...rooting and installing other apks went flawlessly.

Mine is in data/app, not system. Maybe try putting it there....?
Did you try installing it from your SD, without putting it in the internal memory first?
Also, after putting it in data/app or system/app, you could try simply rebooting without installing via Package Installer, and see if it shows up in your app drawer.

That's the thread - should be in the first post.
Yes, it works on 1.0 too.
If you have problems installing other APK's. Find the "Allow Non-Market Apps" Checkbox in NookColor Tools (it's in the app drawer).
Uncheck the box, recheck the box. NC might need a reboot but it worked for me. I tried installing with Astro and Appinstaller and neither would let me until I did this little trick.
I just put the APK's in the Root of the SDcard btw.

Thanks. I was pulling my hair out to try to install non-market apps... Unchecking and checking it again worked.
(When I plug in my nook, I don't see a "system/apps" or "data/apps" folder to put apks.)
That worked.
Thank you so much for all of your help with that. I was so frustrated. Now I just have to get the other issues worked out. Searching the forum for those.
HELP!!! I'm going crazy! I've put the nookcolor tools 0.2apk on my sdcard, then using root explorer am i suppoused to copy, or move the apk from my sdcard to system/apps, or to data/apps? So far i've tried both & nothing, what am i doing wrong? I'm rooted with autonooter & the market works fine, i just need to get nookcolor tools. One more thing, when they say reboot, that means back out of root explorer, & manually hold down the power button, & then turn it back on right? quickboot does not work, so this is all i can think of =' (

copy it to system/apps. Rebooting means hold power button down till a prompt asking if you would like to power down the device comes up. Hit yes. Device is now off. Hold power button again till it starts up. Release power button. It's booting up again....hence the term rebooting.

[Q] Installing an apk w/out market

In the ongoing battle to not have the market crash on launch (rooted stock 1.3 running 4.6.16 and I fixed permissions with ROM manager) I've noticed that titanium backup seems to be a start for a few potential fixes. That said - I have to actually install the bloody thing and w/out market access that's proving tough.
I d'loaded the apk via. the built-in browser. It's on my SD card. But I can't seem to find any way for the built-in app-laucher to....well, launch. When I run the apk's from the browser I get 2 options:
Complete action (running apk) using:
* App Installer (which when clicked says it's unable to install and that I should archive then unarchive the app and try again)
* Package installer (which says there's a prob. parsing the package).
I've got what I assume to be non-market app's checked off in NC Tools (it's the blank box in NC Tools with nothing next to it that people talk about).
Any suggestions to get the bloody apk working?
Sounds like a badly packaged .apk. It also has that error whenever I try to install Honeycomb specific apps.

Do as Dizzy said or find another apk to install, if it keep crashing then try install some another ROM like CM7.

In the NC tools I do have what is supposed to be the non-market installs checked off (but with it being a blank box of text next to it, I'm not positive).
I guess it might be a bad apk, but I got it from the TB site directly. I tried ES File Explorer too. It would seem all apk's I'ev tried give the same error. I'm not sure if maybe B&N somehow hobbled the ability to install apk's with their 1.3 update.

I had CM7 on for a few days, but with the market not working well on it (market determined that the nook wasn't compatible with any of the apps, even with the LCD resize), and with a subscription to PC mag via. B&N I went back to stock rooted 1.3.
Any other suggestions? I was thinknig of trying MIUI if things in CM7 or the Nootered stock don't resolve themselves.

MIUI is just a themed outdated cm7. I don't see how that would help.
Can you get any .apks to install?

I just finished the Android SDK/Java route to push apk's to the NC. I've successfully installed Titanium, ES File explorer, Opera Mobile and SwiFTP to my NC via the SDK route. While I don't have market access, I guess it will be ok for now....I sure wish the Market worked properly though....nice 'n convenient. Ah well.
[EDIT] One thing I did try to get the market to work was uninstall Flash 10.3. I put on 10.2 & reset permissions. No dice for what it's worth....if somebody's keeping a list of things that don't work.

Interestingly, if I try to use the default browser to install appbrain (www.appbrain.com/install), or even Opera mobile to install it, .... it results in a flash screen (rotating flash dots in the middle) that crashes after a second....just like when I (attempt to) launch the Market.

you can install your APK files (like the Play Store) by going to the Amazon Market first and downloading a File Explorer App such as ES File Explorer or any type of File Manager app, locating the APK through that program, and then clicking on it to install

Kindle Fire HD losing root access - retry

I apparently posted in the wrong section (for kindle 2 in case anyone wants to delete that one).
I rooted my 7" Kindle fire HD shortly after getting it. To my surprise there was an automated program that did it for me so I didn't have to learn a whole lot. That was ~ 5 months ago. The big thing was to add the play store and a custom launcher which I did (apex launcher in case it matters).
Yesterday the only launcher available to me was the kindle launcher. I thought perhaps an update went wrong so I uninstalled and reinstalled the apex launcher via the play store. The launcher works, but I have to access it by going to the play store and clicking "open" on the app page (where you could install/uninstall the app). I searched how to install a launcher since I remembered taking different step other than just installing from the play store. The article mentioned going to app/data and when I do it says i no longer have root access.
I tried running the root program and I got a access denied message and root failed try again.
My question ends up being did I actually loose root access or is it something else? All I really need is to have the home button take me to the apex launcher and I wouldn't know anything had changed.
It was suggested that I run root checker (Thanks mindmajick). I did and it said Sorry, no root access. My software version 7.2.3 .
Any suggestions for a next step?
OK, this is no biggie. It happened to me. So if you don't have root access, but you still have play store installed, it's just a matter of rooting it again. But one last thing to check. Go to you file explorer or root explorer and go to " \" I am supposing you know how to do that. You get there by if using es file explorer leading up when you first open it.When you get to \, then you navigate to "system ".Then look file. A folder that is called "Xbin" and open it. If you have a file called "su " in it you are still rooted and I don't know what is going on. If you don't have it, then you just uninstall all things you added from the play store that are system files (optional. If younger like me a bit OCD them you should do it.) Then uninstall superuser and apex, and then reboot. Then root the kindle fire HD again. I suppose you know how to do that.
Please give me a thanks if I helped you, and if this doesn't work, I will see what else we can do.

There was not a file called su in the Xbin folder.
So if i'm lazy/busy I can uninstall superuser, apex and then reroot it? Do you know what happened and how it was caused? Is doing as you mentioned preferable to "restoring to factory default" as far as stability with any legacy fragments that will be left?
Sorry if these are beginner questions, but I've really only learned as much as I needed to to root my kindle (which wasn't much). On a related note, is there a post limit where you don't have to keep entering the captchas to post?
Reroot your kindle. Reset to factory defaults will leave some traces, and then you try to reroot it, you get a bricked kindle. just uninstall things manually, the super user application and leave the market on there, but uninstall apex. Then root it using binary tool and qemu. Root.
edit you have to uninstall super user and apex launcher and reboot the kindle. Then you territory it using said methods.

Apex hung on the uninstall, meaning it said uninstalling for about 10 minutes. I rebooted and i was given the option to install it in the play store so I assumed it was gone. Superuser also removed. I tried rooting it using RootQemu. It gave me an error in the second step

OK. I want you to installation bin4y method. You run the run me in that, and make sure adb driver is working. After. Binary method your kindle will be slow and sluggish. That's OK. Run the qemu root and follow instructiona, and you should be fine

Ok im on my computer now, i will type better. Download the Bin4y Rooting mehtod here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Then extract it, make sure adb is intalled by going to device manager and plug in kindel, make sure no yello or red exclamation points by Kindle fire or portable device. IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LATEST JAVA
THen run the "RunMe.bat" in the Bin4y root folder. Follow the instructions. After you are done with that, kindle will be slow and sluggish. PLug in again, and run Rootqemu method (the "bat" file" ) and follow instructions and if computer doesnt recognize the kindle after each reboot, unplug it and plug it back in. After qemu root done, check kindle for superuser app, and open your es file explorer. GO to settings, and root settings. Put a checkmark by EVERYTHING! and if a popup comes saying "Es file explorer root premission" something like that, click grant/allow. Then you are rooted!
Thanks if i helped.
Still nothing. When I ran the Bin4y is asked if I wanted to do a restore. While I was going wtf do I do now, it apparently timed out and did it anyway.
Once that was done I ran rootqemu and got the same error message: "Step 2 - Expoiting...
/system/bin/sh: cannot create /data/local.prop: Permission denied"
I appreciate your help!
Did you ever disable OTA (Over The Air) Updates? When you rooted the first time were you running 7.2.1 or 7.2.2? The updates will remove root. To me, that's what it sounds like. Someone will have an answer.... in fact, if you are willing to invest $13, you should check out both links in my signature. They would provide a permanent solution to your issue.
Good Luck!

Do you have ADB drivers and Java the latest version installed? Any way, keep your KFHD unlocked when you are doing the "RunME" from Bin4y ROOT many android method. If you have ADB and Java installed, and your kindle is plugged in a USB 2.0 or 3.0 slot on your computer, you run Bin4y runme and watch for a popup on your kindle that says restore in the bottom left(i think). Press restore. Then after that is done its slow etc etc (in before post) if bin4y is done correctly qemu should run fine.

No, I never disabled OTA updates, apparently I should have read a little more than I did...but it worked for a couple of months after the update. I'm in no hurry for a fix...I was going to say I could try making one, but i'm not going to take the time right now for that :silly: . I might look into ordering one just in case.

Yes the adb drivers are installed and I have the latest java. I'm not sure if it was unlocked or not. I did not press restore, when that came up I was too busy going oh sh!t, what do I do now and then it did something on it's own. I don't think it restored it since it is not running slow. I will hopefully have time tomorrow to mess with it a little more.

Be sure to click the restore next time. And it WILL be slow and sluggish. Then just remember to use QemuRoot method! THIS IS A MUST! YOU CAN"T DO SH*T ON YOUR KINDLE IF YOU DON'T DO THE QEMUROOT.

Seems to have worked, just got done with RootQemu and it said it was done. After the restore, I didn't have an pictures (icons, screen saver) which had me a little worried, they came back after step 3 though. Superuser is back on. Now to re-remember what I need to do now (adding turn off OTA updates to the list).
Thanks a lot for your help miztah!!
Krsmqn, i ordered one of those cables just in case I need it in the future. I figure for a few $ i would rather have it than not.

No problem, I was in the same predicament as you a couple of weeks ago. Have fun with your rooted kindle! And be sure to disable Amazon OTA updates. Here is a link: (I would use method number 1 because you can use that utility for a while, and use it to fix a bricked Kindle, now that the bootloader has been cracked.) You don't really need that cable unless you are messing around with the bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086450
Thanks for the link. The cable is already on it's way via a slow boat from china. Figure I will have it in a month
I am now having a problem with the apex launcher. I had the regular version before and was going to try the pro this time. I installed it and when I go to run it it says "Apex launcher has stopped". When I go to the app description page, it give me the option to force stop but not to uninstall. I tried reinstalling it same thing. I moved the apk file to /system/app and gave it user R/W, group & other read only. then installed. Do i perhaps need to manually delete something?
Try completely removing it from both system /application & data/ application (if applicable), save one to your sdcard. Then instead of clicking on the application to install, long press (on the one you saved to sdcard ) and choose move (to). Move the application to system /app. Do not install. Instead, long press and choose properties (at the bottom of the long press menu ). Change permissions to rw-r-r. Save. Do not Install. Reboot. You should see "kindle is upgrading" upon rebooting. When it's ready, you should have it as a launcher option.
Good luck.
Or you could just delete the apex launcher from system. /Application and the data/app . Then reboot, install apex from play store and move from data application to system application, and change properties to rwxrxr and reboot without installing. Kinda the same thing just a little change in beginning.

I tried it that way you suggested Krsmqn, same thing, the error message saying apex launcher has stopped. I did not see a file to delete in the data/app folder unless it has an odd name.

I followed what you had said, d/l from the app store and moving it. When I was in settings it had a message in red about going to recently used apps and removing other loaders listed. I will check when I get home and see if it is still there.

[Q] HELP! I deleted tetheringguard.apk

So I deleted tethering guard after I rooted my phone under the impression from some other forum that would allow me to tether freely. Well its quite the opposite, now when I go to the tethering app, it wont even attempt to turn on, neither will any other tethering apps. I found the tetheringguard.apk file online and attempted to re install it to no avail. I have tried, command prompt, this is the result;
C:\Users\RC\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$EXa0.371\data>adb install <C:\Users\RC\Downloads>/<Tetheringguard.apk
Access is denied.
I have tried the APK installer app from the play store, it loads via Sim and when I click install it says "Application not installed"
Lastly I tried emailing the apk to my own email and opening it with my phone, that does the same thing as the APK installer app.
I am brand new at all of this stuff so please be patient, and thanks for the help
Also Im using holiday-dream-x2-Rom.
3rd party apps allowed
usb debugging is on.
Remount the system partition as r/w or download one of the ruu.zips and pull it from there

it wont install like a normal app because its a system app, you have to use a root explorer to copy it to the proper location and then make sure it has correct permissions.
Reflash rom, and only wiping dalvik and cache, and you will have it back.
