Hi guys,
Using a Nexus S right now and a buddy is offering me his unlocked IS. I am very tempted because of the faster processor and more memory but the locked bootloader and lack of developer support (compared to other phones) is becoming a big turn off. Value wise, the IS or even the DHD is a sure bet but again, support is key to a successful phone and it doesn't get better than google's Nexus family.
What do you think?
But I'm seeing a lot of custom roms, are they fully functional and bug free? As good as the ones on the HD forums?
Remember, this is a phone released in March/April! Developer support will grow significantly once AlphaRevX has released the public beta for S-OFF, letting you put custom roms onto the IS.
To note, it's more of the question of whether you want to use Sense UI for the time being or be open to use other roms.
In terms of hardware, its similar - asside from the cameras, 8.0 and 1.3 Megapixels respectively.
You can't go wrong if its FREE, however its solely up to you.

I don't root my phone nor put custom rom on it, so cannot comment on rom. But between DHD and IS, I came from DHD, because of the size, screen quality, battery life, weight, no ffc, and other stuff, I sold it and bought IS which IMO is the best HTC single core phone.
Regarding rootability, I don't mind too much but I do believe time will solve all the problem, there will be always ways to make things happened.

The S-LCD in the Incredible S is probably one of the best displays i've ever seen on a mobile handset (aside from S-AMOLED displays). The viewing angles are spectacular, no wash out whatsoever unless it's a really extreme angle. AND the colours are really vivid.
Despite the DHD having a 4.3" display vs a 4.0" display, the IS beats it hands down in the display department

Both phones are similar from a spec standpoint. I think the Incredible S feels better in the hand. Nexus S felt cheap to me. Nexus S will get updates first but once the Incredible S is rooted there will be a custom rom for any updates the Nexus S gets in the future.

My IS is rooted and Mike1986 Rom is 100% working and stable, never had a single force close. Speed is instant, no delays anywhere.
I have this same dilemma but it's the opposite. I have the Incredible S. Sigh.

My phone is very smooth w/o root.... Gingerbread...... Everything is perfect and I don't feel the need for root.... I tried both nexus s and IS personally I felt sense more productive in day to day work and more beautiful too.... My battery lasts a day easily and display is on par with super amoled.... There are some unique features of sense that I like .... Say for example... Flip to silent... Volume boost when in pocket....and volume reduce when u lift the phone.... These make the phone more useful.... Plus the build quality is better than Samsung.... Anytime... And design is unique... All these make it desirable.....

Your friends IS may even have an unlocked bootloader right now. I've heard the GPS chip in nexus s is crap aswell. It was a dilemma for me too as I was trying to choose between the same phones. I ultimately went for this one though and haven't regretted it at all. One thing I would have liked in theory though is the contactless payment chip as I think McDonald's offer that now

i have both: Inspire 4G (US version of the Desire HD) and a factory s-off'd Bell Incredible S. i've rooted both and am using sense 3.0 roms on both. ( lights at bottom aren't working yet with Sense 3.0 on the Inc S. ) the Inc S display is better than my Inspire and it's easier to carry. also seems to be a little faster than my Inspire, but not enough to sway me away from the Inspire. the smaller screen can be an issue for some (but not me); yes (to me) .3 inches makes a difference with some things like font size in email. not a show stopper though.
bottom line: i don't think you can go wrong with either one. i use the Inc S for work and the Inspire for "play".

Hi there, I have an Incredible S with Android 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1. It was originally locked to Virgin (canada) but I unlocked it and now it's on Rogers. The phone says there is no software updates.
It gets the job done as basically all I'm using it for is text and phone.
I am a complete newbie and know nothing about RUU's, radios, kernels, and other stuff I've read on here.
I have seen many threads about people having upgraded to ICS and find their phones laggy, the screen gets stuck, ect.
My question is, if you have upgraded, was it worth it, or do you wish you never had done it?
I would enjoy having the latest, but not very technical inclined.

I have tried most of the roms and some are laggy some are not. I'm on Nik's Project X with the Redux kernal and love it. Ice cream sandwich is a lot nicer to use than Gingerbread, easier to look at and a lot easier to set up to suit what you want.
But again it really is personal preference.

I guess the only reason you would like to upgrade to ics is purely for compatibility, as much of the newer apps are going to jellybean and ics, rather than gingerbread. The official OTA was quite laggy when i got it, so i rooted and switched to a custom rom. Also, if you install a custom radio, network signal could dramatically increase or dramatically decrease. So beware what radio you are flashing. Also, flashing a radio is very risky, so beware!
In the end, it is your choice. If you are just using your phone purely for text and calling, then you can stick with gingerbread, but people like me who are using their phone and discovering it's capabilities, it is probably better if they upgrade..

My suggestion would be to install a good recovery. And make a nandroid backup. That way if it goes wrong you can go back to where you were!
Then load a rom in and play. I could never in back to 2.3! Or even sense 2.
And yes, Project X is smooth and to my way much better.

Depends on the ROM. I'm on MIUI GB and recently tried MIUI v4 only to find it a laggy POS for the most part. From what I understand the stock ICS ROMs that are rolling out from most manufacturers can be quite laggy. I think this is something to do with how ICS manages memory. Custom ROMs can get around this, so it'd be worth experimenting.
Compatibility probably won't be an issue for the time being. I seem to recall that something like 80% of Android phones are still on Gingerbread, so making an app only run on ICS or JB would seriously limit your market.
Regarding flashing a new radio I'd say that, unless you have good reason to want to change (really poor signal etc), I wouldn't bother. I'm not sure the risks outweigh the reward, if everything is fine with the version you already have.
Put it this way - the reason I rooted my phone was because HTC updated the ROM and my phone ground to a halt. Flashing a custom ROM transformed my phone back into a speedy machine, and added a whole bunch of additional functionality that I now can't live without!

If u do not want to flash a custom rom, then u can flash a stock rom.. For some reason it is quicker than ota and it maintains s-off...

There are no "over the air" (OTA) updates from Bell/Virgin, but HTC have released an ICS update on their developer site:

Just filter on device "Incredible S", carrier "HTC" and region "CA". The downloaded file is an RUU, which will do all the work of updating your phone to Android 4.0.4 and Sense 3.6.
I applied the update yesterday without any issue, though did a full reboot (remove battery) in order to clear out some initial sluggishness.
FWIW, my thoughts:
+ new text message conversation UI is nice, with each message in it's own little piece of paper
+ text message timestamps are correct on rogers (i.e. don't need to download "SMS time fix")
- some of the animations are a little overdone
= the tile-based approach to rendering pages means initial loads are blurry, but scrolling is fine once the page has finished rendering
++ no Bell bloatware
+ new gmail app is much much better
- not sure I like the new phone answer/decline UI when the screen is locked
+ htc mail app handles multiple accounts better than the gingerbread version, though now that the gmail app is usable, this isn't a big deal for me
- htc calendar widget is white text on black background, I preferred the old version
- lost access to various htc-specific apps/widgets, so you'll need to find replacements on the play store
+ play store app replaces the market
Overall, I'm happy with the update.

Go for Nik Project X,
Even though you are light user (like me), you will enjoy very light and smooth user interface and also sense 4.0
Also, ICS will come with all its hidden benefits...no need to list down I guess....
I also have a Virgin Mobile IncS unlocked and now on the Rogers network. I'm currently using Nik's IncS Jellybean rom and it has been incredibly stable for me and I am using it as my daily rom. It's not perfect, but it's an excellent rom.
If you're concerned about the feedback on ICS/Jellybean, but still want to explore rooting, why don't you try some of the Gingerbread roms? CM-7.2 is one of the most stable roms out there and has quite a few features that are not present in the stock rom. If you don't want to lose Sense, there are quite a few roms in development that might meet your needs. There are even a few that are based on the official ICS rom.
Hi guys, well I bit the bullet and loaded the stock ics ruu from htc site. Have not rooted or s-off yet as I don't feel confident enough yet.
So far, about a week in and it is very fast. I have to admit, I don't notice too much of a difference because I am such a basic user.
But it has got rid off quite a few things I never used, so it is leaner. So I'm happy I did it, and want to thank everyone for their opinions and help. :good:
Kind of funny but I've been thinking about this. 4.2 is almost an update designed to make bare bones aosp android better, and does almost nothing for a phone with a manufacturer skin. 4.1 would be great on this phone with project butter, better notifications, and Google now, but here's the rundown on 4.2 features:
Better camera app: sense 3.6 already has a nicer one than aosp. No photosphere but its kinda of a gimmick "look what my phone can do" feature anyway. The stock camera app has always sucked until 4.2 and the update finally brings it up to par with custom ui's, but does nothing for us.
Improved lockscreen with widget support : sense pretty much has the best lockscreen with shortcut support and notification widgets that appear through sense apps. Custom widget support would be nice but aosp still doesn't have shortcut support.
Gesture typing: yep, we got it on the stock "touch input" keyboard. next
Quick settings : yep sense has that too
Tv out support : while we don't have miracast support, about every htc device post evo 4G has either an hdmi port or mhl support. I'm sure the vivid is no different, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Better alarm clock app : the aosp alarm clock app has always been an after thought until 4.2,however ui's like sense and touchwiz have always had really nice alarm clock apps and the 4.2 app really just brings stock aosp up to par with the ui's
User profiles: this feature is tablet only and disabled on the phones so the vivid wouldn't get it anyway.
I think that's about it. So there you have it! I really kind of believe 4.2 is catered to nexus devices, and I honestly could see a lot of manufacturers passing on this as if they do update, then it'll be little more than a version number change. If you're in the market for a non nexus phone and it has 4.1, then your already up to date.

I have a nexus 7 also and personally I'd like to see 4.2 on the vivid because I HATE sense.... Didn't realize how much I didn't like it until I played with pure android. But I'm guessing that if we can't get CM10 to work on this phone, there'd be no reason to worry about 4.2 or not!

Yeah I'm not to keen on sense either, thought it was awesome until I got a phone with it and had to use it every day. If by some Longshot we get jellybean, I hope it comes with Sense 4+ and not the underwhelming sense 3.6 that's on this phone now. From what I've seen sense 4 is world's ahead of what we have.

Once cm10 is completed bring 4.2 will be easy as there isn't much difference between 4.1.2 and 4.3 when it comes to making things work
Anyways I love the 4.2 camera...and I think I read others here on the vivid are able to use it on ICS....

Well I was nearly speaking from the perspective of stock, of course I'd want it for cm, but cm doesn't quite have 4.2 ready yet anyway. I hope you can pull it off, I might keep this thing if I can actually get away from using sense or "desensitized" roms.
Problem is with the development we've had, nothing really seems done. I'm sure there is some way to crack the ril issues, so kudos for not giving up. I know I've complained alot but really the phone is no different on stock than any other phone, it's just development hasn't been so great as the best developers keep giving up on the phone in favor of a galaxy s3 or something else.
From a stock standpoint this is better than my captivate I had before, but I would of hated the captivate if I had to be at the mercy of at&t and Samsung for updates which is where we're at with this phone currently. So best of luck to ya hope you can finally solve the dreaded ril issue!

Lol I feel the same...but since I have the phone and at least somewhat knowledge on this stuff I figured I might as well try my best...that being said I hate HTC and will never get another one...this vivid ruined it for me. Like you say, stock wise this phone is great...but that's it. Once you go into the world of custom ROMs this phone takes a major dive to nowhere :/
And honestly...ialthough I will keep trying I don't think I'll personally ever figure out the ril/mic issue...but since we got h8rift now I think we may stand a fighting chance...he is a real dev, I'm just a contributor...hence our titles

Yeah they can make some beautiful looking phones with excellent build quality but sense hasn't aged well and every post sensation device has been a lot less developer friendly. I almost think they feel insulted that anyone wouldn't want to use sense and feel like their phones are perfect already.
But the one x, one x+, and DROID DNA are all gorgeous looking. Hell really so is our phone. Make no mistake their phones are awesome its just the software that blows.

Hi, I just crossed back to Android and am excited to be back but am a little peeved with HTC's Sense overlay. I had the Nexus S a couple of years back (and loved it!) before using iOS and now I just upgraded to the One hoping to have the same experience with my Nexus.
My question is...and I'm hoping its in the right forum...is it possible to root the HTC One and have stock vanilla Android on it? Honestly, I kind of feel that HTC Sense ruins a really a beautifully made phone. It does add a lot of unnecessary functions and tries to link everything and everyone which makes it absolutely confusing.
Also...how obnoxious is that bootup with the Sprint splash screen? Ugh. Brings the premium down a couple of notches.
You can root the one easily using HTC's unlock method. I believe there's a toolkit in the development section. No vanilla android just yet. Although sense isn't really as bad as what it used to be. (But again, I primarily use my phone for social networking.)

The cm team had a build but it's very Alpha, that's is the only A.O.S.P. Rom at the moment. Once that's all peachy I'm sure you will see others pop up.
As far as the boot up sound, after you root, most of the available rooms have disable it.

When my One is on vibrate I never here the boot up sound.
Also, could the 4.2.2 keyboard be ported over? I've already been replacing HTC apps with stock apps (gallery, clock, etc).

Download some different launchers from the Play store and try them out. You don't even need to root a device to change launchers. Simply download, install and open.

I'd be curious to see if there is some portion of the hardware that works only with the Sense framework.
It would be awesome if a custom ROM can push the camera beyond the stock experience. Does the HTC 'ImageChip' work with custom ROMs like CM?
I'm looking for a phone to upgrade from my current HTC Desire HD. I started a couple of years ago with Sense, then reluctantly went to stock Android. Now I can't go back to Sense and a big reason is battery life. These smart phones after a year, it's all about reducing lag and increasing battery time.
So now I'm on an unofficial CM10.
Well if I get an HTC One, will I just install CM again? Is that what people do, or do you make use of HTC's software? I know how it's a personal preference, but I'm wondering if the latest Sense is so good people are sticking with it. Reviews say it's less bloat.
And if people are just going to a stock Android Rom, is it better to get this phone or the GS4 to load a stock Rom?

I rather like Sense 5. I came from CM10 on Sensation too and I'm happily living with Sense 5. It's simple and fast - virtually lag free. I've had crappy experiences like many of you with Sense 3.5 to 4.5, so this is a pleasant surprise. I even use blinkfeed rather often now. I plan to stay with Sense 5 custom roms for my One. Just try it, I don't think you'll miss AOSP/CM10 unless you're one of those religious types.

100% agreed. I came from AOKP on my S3 (I can't stand touchwiz). I purchased the One and absolutely love sense 5. I don't believe I'll switch back. Especially since some features won't work like the beats driver and I've also heard some flaws with the camera on AOSP ROMs.
If you are worried about battery, quite frankly you shouldn't be purchasing a mini computer. Battery life is great on this phone for how powerful it is. While at work I turn on Power Saver mode and have my data connections turned off on sleep mode. When I'm off 9 hours later I'm still at 70%. If I keep everything running I'm at about 20% by the end of the night when I plug it in.

+1 sense5 is smooth as butter it doesnt lag on my phone at all

Hmm.. not sure what greenify is, but I can tell you what Power Saver is. When turned on it conserves power by limiting the speed of the cpu, turns down screen brightness, disables haptic feedback, and disables data while on sleep mode. Pretty handy in my opinion. =)

I came from the N4 running CM 10.1 and I find too sense 5 a big surprise. It's running very smooth and battery life is quite the same with my N4. I plan on staying on stock and unrooted for a while.
Power saver is not like greenify, it reduces CPU speed and even brightness if the battery level is low.

from what i can tell,
greenify basically ensures that apps are fully unloaded when you lock your phone... keeps the naughty apps in line.
the htc power save option basically does the usual limit screen brightness as well as cpu, turn off haptic feedback and disables data during sleep mode.
the disabling of data is a little bit of an issue for me, since i use cerberusapp and it won't let me connect (obviously)
things still sync however no longer in real time (i think it enables data on a pre-defined interval to update sync).
the good news is that you can disable these options individually so yeah i have all the power save options enabled apart from data.
i too went from a cm10 device to sense 5. i'm loving the new fresh feel, however I'm missing the notification toggles badly.
Before the HTC One, I've never owned a HTC device before and therefore never used Sense before.
Before I got this phone, I checked out some of the reviews and even done research on previous HTC models just to learn a little bit more about HTC in general.
I'd honestly read a lot of bad reviews regarding previous iterations of Sense, with the main complaints being against Sense 4.
As I'm not the kind of guy who bases my decisions on reviews they didn't stop me wanting to get the One. Afterall, even if I didn't like Sense 5 I could always flash an AOSP ROM or use a custom launcher anyway. I will admit, however, that I've got no complaints whatsoever regarding Sense 5 as it is great.
Having said that, I am currently using Apex launcher but that's just so that I can customize my homescreen more so than I can with the stock UI.
Some great replies guys, thanks. With my Desire HD, I used the ARHD rom for a while, so I stuck with the stock Sense experience, but I was rooted. I tried many times to go to CM, etc, but I always came back to Sense. I loved the Sense apps, email, etc. But eventually I had to switch because of lag. And then months later when I tried to go back to Sense, I couldn't..too slow.
So it sounds promising to me that I can basically get the HTC One, and go with the stock (but rooted of course) experience for a while. And with the specs of this phone, I'll be able to move on to the latest and great (Key Lime Pie) when it comes out.
