[Q] Can someone do a scratch test on Galaxy Note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am planning to replace my S2 with a Note (Hoping it is a wise choice), but after reading the rumors of no Gorilla Glass on the Note, have any of you observed scratches on the display? Also, what is fortified glass?

I would say it scratches easily - already have a couple of noticeable scratches after a few days use and being pretty careful with it.
I don't like screen protectors, but I reluctantly ordered one for the Note.

WTH?
Crap, this is one factor that would turn me away from the Note. Is the glass really inferior to Gorilla Glass? Is it DragonTail Glass or Lotus Glass, or neither? Then what is it? Windex?

No offense SAlmighty. Just some humor. I'm interested also to see someone performing a drop or scratch test. I believe it's better to wait until someone do it and post in on Youtube.

Use both! Go hardcore,
Thing is, this is an 'urgent' request, seriously, or else I may as well look at the new Razor, lol.

I will do it, just send $800 my way. kthxbye

guys check this link .. http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note-4135.php
gorilla glass is mentioned in the specifications ...

My impressions are that the Galaxy Note does have grorilla glass.
I did not do a scratch test but i did have it a few days without protective film and did not notice scratches before I put one on (since it arrived just yesterday).
Just always remember:
Gorilla glass is not scratch proof, just scratch resistent.
This means that it is harder to get scratches in than normal glass, but if you are not careful they can still easily happen - a spec of sand can easily do it...

All media report gorilla glass in SGnote. Haven't found anything about this from samsung side. SGnexus don't have it.
Anyone have somthing about this from Samsung?

I think it's as durable as the Ipad.

Since we/I haven't found anywhere an official confirmation I would have guessed no it hasn't got one..
My theory? Samsung would have lost thousands of customers if they announced it does not have one. It's kind of a necessity this days. We all wan't to be as much protected as possible.
Reasons? I believe the most obvious/plausible one, is the HD resolution. I believe it's required to have a special made type of gorilla/king-kong glass to work with that resolution and they might had not manage to produce enough or to get it ready when the SGN entered production.
Or either Samsung or Corning had a disagreement and broke the contract etc.
To be honest the lack of Gorilla or equivalently/stronger glass is the ONLY drawback the Note has in my personal opinion/preference. The other concern is the banding/tints/screen issues some users have here.
Apart from the 2 "problems" mentioned, this IS my dream phone that I had waited since the rumoured/announce of Tegra 650/Apx 2500 3-4 years ago as you can see from my avatar and made me skip the great phones announced/release for the last 3 years.

HOW?! I have a crappy ZTE Blade which I doubt came with Gorilla Glass and sure you see scratches if you look very close, but the phone i 18 months old or so and I've hated it for 12, meaning I've treated it badly.

but will it blend.. i need to know urgently too.. can someone test it out for me

This is the dumbest request I've heard all day. Spend your own $800 and you'll know the answer yourself. Don't be so ****ing selfish and ask people to ruin their devices for you.

OK, I just tried it for you and there is no scratches at all! You can all do it to your device now.

Folks, settle down, relax, lol.
This question (Title of the Thread) is a figure-of-speech.
Nobody needs to do a scratch test to find out.
I need to simply know, does the Galaxy Note have Gorilla Glass or anything equivalent or better like DragonTail?
I've been reading that because of the high resolution, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note uses Fortified Glass.
What the heck is that suppose to mean?
Request to Moderator--> Please change title of thread to "What glass is used in Galaxy Note"
Thank you

Beware - WEAK Gorilla Glass! Scratches out of nowhere

I had my Nexus 4 wrapped in plastic pretty much all day yesterday. Only in the evening I had taken it off. It had no contact with anything that might cause the scratches. This morning I found it had 3 nasty scratches on the screen. How that is possible - I have no idea. The phone was not dropped nor abused!
Maybe the phone you got was in a bad batch, I doubt it's covered by warranty.
So the Gorilla Glass is weak because you have no idea what happened?
Scratches are not caused by thin air friction like you seem to imply. Pocket with keys or change, something that shouldn't have grinded on it did. Please tell us something more convincing than "it was sitting there with the plastic on".
Its gorilla glass 2.. the exact same thing as about 50% of the phones on the market and your is scratched by air?

No pockets with change, had it empty specifically, plus had plastic wrap at all times. At home I had it charging either on the wooden table or the chair - Wood scratched the class?
The phone was face-down on both.

Pretty much nailed it, it's like when my dad tells me "fish screensaver" installed itself on his computer rofl.
Sabotage from someone.
Time for a screen protector then. They can do a decent job of concealing scratches for you.

Angry cat maybe? Are you ignoring your pets due to playing on your phone?
Tiny grains of sand can easily scratch gorilla glass. Easier than keys or coins.
They are not visible unless I use flash. Right bottom corner, two are in X shape and one near the edge.

Maybe it's your good looks. Be lucky it didn't shatter. In the future, take more care of it. I've owned nearly a dozen devices and have never had problems except for the time I let a friend use the stylus on the phone and pressed way too hard.

oh guys...!!! i just put my guitar on the bed and the z1 was on the pillow ! the impact was totally nothing..less than one cm ... no doubt on that..
it was not a impact that makes the screen like it..
considering that there is no anti shatter film ( which there is one ! ) the gorilla glass 3 should break out this easy???!!!

but i think a screen guard ( which i removed 3days ago) could protect it a little bit better.maybe It wouldn't break if the screen guard was installed.by the way , I was expecting the touch to stand working but now my z1 is useless totally! keeps yours safe and try using a front covered case.

man the problem is money ! in Iran these parts are totally expensive (about 250 US$) just for screen!which 1$ is 3000Tomans and i just earn 600,000Tomans each month
but thanks for noticing. I may one day try to replace it by my own!
It's just bad luck m8, I feel for you but the fact of the matter is the devices now cracked and it'd be impossible to convince Sony or your provider of how it happened and to get a sympathetic ear, looks to me like you'll have to either fix it yourself or claim on insurance.
Did you insure it? How old is it if not? You may be able to add insurance on from your provider, I know EE in the UK offer this service at any time.
It's actually Dragontrail glass. But both Gorilla and Dragontrail are NOT unbreakable: they are harder, so they are less likely to scratch, but that makes them more prone to break. Diamonds, for example, are the hardest material known; but they break/chip very easily. Our phones are like that, if there's a light impact on the wrong angle the screen will shatter easily.

The Z1 scratches quite easily. My S4 remained pristine after over a year of use, so did my Galaxy Note. This scratched within a month and continues to get minor scratches over time.
I hear you with the scratches, i've had cases on my phone since day one and there are scratches on the back of the phone, it's never been without a case and i take very good care of my devices, the front and back now have Zagg shields on them so they're ok now but yea it does scratch very easily, especially the back.
Its breakable anyhow.
It's quite breakable as far as i noticed, and also scratcahble All tested and failed..

That can be only coincidence. Have you ever noticed or heard that it's getting scracthed while all protecters on ?
Wonder why they produce so expensive mobiles that breaks so easly... I think we are the lazy consumers who don't search enough
It's all about luck chaps, i've dropped a phone from the top of a cupboard which is around 9 feet up onto slate, one single dent nothing else and yet i've seen someone drop the same phone from less than 2 feet and the whole screen has smashed ? Not worth trying to figure out, once that phones in free fall it's simply a case of luck.
Oh i forgot, we also threw a 9320 blackberry down some stairs, concrete covered with lino, around 50 steps. Some bumps and bruises but no cracks
In my phone too
by the way since i dont have enough money to buy a new phone ( z1 or z2 or any other new phones) I decided to repair it  and planning for the z3 . beacuase in Iran there is no insurance for phones ( just for HTC ) and no warranty and even if I had the bootloader is unlocked so its voided . the only concern here is for replacement cares. most of repairers dont care enough so you will see the repair marks on body.
one question , the new lcd even the original one (which i want to use) has the same quality ? does it fit on body completely? the colors? every thing is the same?
I think so

Cracked Screen

This really stinks a 2ft drop to ceramic tile flooring and it must have hit just right. I have never broken a phone yet and now my week and a half phone is damaged. The funny thing is my case is coming in the mail today! I'm not blaming the phone, just my bad luck!!

I would blame your phone, my 2 week old Galaxy Note 4 has a nice big scratch down it despite not being put near anything significant (like a set of keys in my pocket, etc). Hardly very scratch resistant so i imagine not drop resistant either in real life situations. They should try and find a better material than Gorilla glass.
I wonder if this screen is replaceable? just the front bit of course, which seems like what you need as well.
Ouch!!!
With every new Samsung flagship here at XDA there always seems to be that ONE unlucky guy who manages to break their display within the month of release, same happened early last year with the S4 I remember, the thread is still going last I checked.
I'd be so gutted, even though I have insurance, I'd be just so done. The good thing is that Samsung do a thorough job with repairs. My S4 had a display issue, took it to Samsung, got fixed in a day and came with a whole new front panel fitted, phone looked brand spanking new.
Sucks to hear... I am glad they opened a Samsung repair center about a 30 minute drive from where I live for times like this...

There is a much more scratch resistant material, in fact impossible to scratch with anything softer than a diamond. Its called sapphire crystal, and my watch has it. Its a truly amazing material, but apparently too expensive to make a 5.7in screen from it.

If you are going to go this route, make sure you opt for the high quality OEM glass. Its usually around 10 bucks and many hong kong sellers have it. You can tell because it usually has a red tag on it in the pictures. Stay away from 3 dollar glass. It will just break very easily and waste all of your hard work.
its hurt to see a falling Note4 <3 best of luck next time mate

[Q] Broken back glass : manufacturing problem or bad luck ?

Dear XDA users,
I bought my Mi 9 early April and after less than a month I have found the back glass broken like this when taking the phone out of my jeans pocket :

The phone never fell (it has absolutely no marks on the outer metal), I did not perform any special/unusual move with the phone in my pocket, and there was no other items in that pocket (I am used to carry all my phones that way for years).
But this time I just found the mobile like that when I took it out. Note that I am not using any kind of protection.
So I wonder if I just had extreme bad luck or if more devices may have a fragility on their back glass ?
Maybe there was some keys or coins in you pocket and sitting with jeans make some pressure on phones

No as I wrote above there was nothing else in my pocket. I am used to live and travel with all my phones like that for a dozen years, and I never put anything else in the same pocket to avoid damaging the screen. It worked fine until now...
I wonder if it accidentally got hit or something, I know you said no but it looks like that section near the usbc port is took a hit of some sort.
I had my oneplus back crack, only a few weeks old, never dropped etc but I chalked it up to it must have inadvertently got hit somehow/someway without be knowing as I didn't find others with the same issue.

The cracks in the glass seem to start from the bottom indeed, but I can assure you that the metal all around the usbc is totally clean (there is a small white reflection there on the picture which may be seen as a damage, but it's not).
I cannot exclude that I missed a "hit" on my pocket during the hour which elapsed since the previous phone usage, but it would still be extremely weak for a gorilla glass 5 to break with a "hit" that I wouldn't have felt or noticed :/

Just looking around, can order a new back glass for $10 and it looks simple to replace. That's good at least.

Replacement back here
It's 3D glass. NEVER leave it unprotected.
2.5D glass on iPhones are much weaker as well (like the front of the Mi 9 which is very close).
3D glass or Edge-Glass (think Samsung Galaxy S7/8/9/10) is also amongst the worst.
No one should go without, AT LEAST, the included case, just because the camera glass isn't sapphire-crystal (9H) but sapphire-glass (5.5H) - like JerryRigEverything test has shown.

My phone is in a robust case and the rear glass has been broken 3 times now! I have never broken any screen before and I have had phones for over 25 years.
Hi,
I just realize that I forgot to provide feedback here.
So I bought this back cover on Aliexpress : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33009357325.html
An this heat gun : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32966891985.html
I replaced the back cover myself and it was quite easy. Have a look at video like this one before : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta_vYqOfK0Q
Since then, I am enjoying my Mi 9 and never had any problem with broken back or front glass anymore (although I still don't use any cover and hold the phone in my pocket...).
I think that the original back cover that I had was faulty, although Xiaomi never accepted that and refused to repair under warranty.
Good luck with yours !
Laurent
Thanks I will give it a try.
I have purchased all of the replacement screens do far from eBay..
Looks like bad luck. I don't use a case on my Mi 9 with no issues. The back is all scratched up, but no cracks.

Camera protector

So I bought display glass protectors that included protectors for the camera aswell.
Before applying the screen protector I noticed the factory installed screen protector. It was just barely visible and I had to google if this was a protector and that I do not break anything by removing it
So back to the camera protector. I can't really tell if there is a camera protector installed already. I couldn't find anything regarding this.
Does anybody know? I don't wanna break anything by trying to remove something that isn't there.
Thanks in advance
No, buddy, there's no camera protector. Apply it soon. I can't purchase it locally due to crappy market and already dinted. It's so tiny but i know its there. Drives me nuts.
There is indeed a factory installed cam protector just like the Note 10+
Just use a case with a raised guard around it and it will do fine.
After over 1 year there's zero damage to my 10+'s.
You may need to remove the back panel if you need to replace it but so what?
The add on cam protector isn't needed but a good case is for these Notes. They are corner hit happy and one unprotected drop is all it takes.
I too bought a 4 pack of screen protectors that came with 3 camera protectors as well figured why not right? WRONG once installed they make the flash useless as the flash hits the glass and glares out the photo horribly. No matter how perfect you get the cutout for the flash this issues still happens. I had mine on perfectly even used a lighted magnifying inspection glass to verify when I was installing it.
Same issue here. It causes too much glare when using flash
guys, really put something protective on there! loads of people reported that their camera glass broke without any big impact, including me. Samsung only offers a lenghty repair service instead of admitting their mistake. it's annoying and makes my telezoom lense almost unausable in certain light situations.

I had one on the day I got the phone. Didn't make a difference. Camera cracked in two places, people on Samsung Members are complaining about the same thing. Not one drop, not one time set on the table roughly. Broken just 3 days after it arrived.

That's not a good case! Finding a good one tough. You absolutely need a raised guard for the cam and screen.
I use the Zizo Bolt on my 10+, while I don't intentionally test it, it's survive around half a dozen drops onto concrete from 2-3 feet with zero damage.
Nillkin makes a case for the S20FE which has a sliding panel to protect the lens.

I've purchased this on Ali express on HM lucky store.it was not easy to find with the cut out model so you won't get any blurred pictures.

+1, why you would want to use a £500 phone with no case?

You still have to open and a drop while you take pictures with that case won't prevent you could drop it on a small rock with that big size glass. That's why I still prefer a protector strait on the camera. Tomorrow I have to pick up from post office and post picture afterwards with a case.
Ah so I see its just tempered glass with a film to outline the camera lens and flash, clever.
Received today. It's a aluminum Matt Finnish protector. The black is a spigen case and it's still inside the cover.
Nice, doesn't look half bad
