Telus Canada - Motorola Droid 3

Hey i was wondering if anyone knew if the Droid 3, or its equivalent the Moto xt 860:
( WCDMA 850/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps (Category 9/10), EDGE Class 12, GPRS Class 12, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps)
will work on Telus Canada network (after being unlocked of course), and work well (data and everything working). Thanks

It should work with their sim cards after unlock, yes.

I am currently using the XT860 on Telus, no problems at all. You just have to add the APN for Telus before you can use data. And as BuckM pointed out, you have to make sure the phone is SIM unlocked.

Xt860 on telus configuration

Both work fine on Telus. Unlock the of course is required.

I'm looking at some locked Verizon Droid 3's on ebay, I'm under the impression they are xt862's not xt860, If I get the unlock code (online) will they function with TELUS?
I read there are radio differences between the two (XT862 from US, XT860 CAN/Brazil).

The xt862 should work on telus, however verizon changes the unlock code so only verizon can unlock them. In order to do this it has to be hooked up to a verizon acct in good standing. More hassle than its worth. Get a xt860

Or get the users to ship it already unlocked after he gets the code from Verizon. Tell him it is and make it a deal breaker, if it's not unlocked you can keep it and see what he says. Verizon has a habit of giving out the PUK(personal unlock code used to unlock your phone if you enter the wrong sim code too many times) and calling it a sim unlock code, it's caused a lot of confusion on these forums and others and is something to watch out for as well, you want the phone unlocked, not with the code.

Or get an xt862 that has never been activated on verizons network. Afaik when its first activated is when the code is changed

The one I purchased was advertised as a CLEAN ESN, and I was able to unlock it ($6, and 15 min wait) and confirm functionality.
The only issue I seem to be encountering is with the data connection. I added the apn information in the connection settings and it does work but when I switch between Wifi and back it stops working. Also when it works it seems very slow...
So stock with just the unlock I'm not sure if it's 100% working on TELUS.
Any ideas?

I followed this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406812
And it seems to work a bit better.

I know this is an old thread, but to clear the records you can unlock and use the Droid 3 by Verizon on Telus or any other canadian provider without issues, so for those that state you need to have Verizon unlock the device before using is totally wrong 110%
Go nuts and buy those locked or unlocked Droids to use on Telus or rogers etc... it will work, just add the APN by the specific provider and your good to go,
On another note please also look at the specs before purchasing any device make sure the Network Frequency also matches.

That, unless Verizon altered the default unlock code. And this is about 50% in the cases. You being lucky doesn't mean everyone else is.

What are you talking about? Verizon has nothing to do with altering the unlock codes, i have done this for over 100 verizon phones 10 of those were all droid 3's so what are you talking about?

if that's the case, there's still opportunity for additional speed since vzw users are locked in at 14.4.
It's no different than our phone. They just call it the 4G because GSM companies like to call their HSPA+ technology "4G" when it's really just an extension of 3G. Our phones support the same bands - you're gaining nothing by buying that phone unless the MCC 310 block is not in place, in which case you'd theoretically be able to use the phone on AT&T or TMo here. Both of those carriers are atrocious in my area, so I can't see selling the D3 for that just to get the MCC 310 unlock. Odds are, that will be broken soon too anyway, just like the D2G.

[Q] Droid 3 on AT&T??

So I was searching around XDA and found that they finally have found a way to unlock the AT&T and T-mobile bands on the Droid 2 Global. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057064&page=3 I was wondering if we could benefit from this thread in trying to get the Droid 3's U.S. bands unlocked. The reason I ask this is because those of us on AT&T don't have a great selection of dual core android devices and this would be a great feat. I hope with the power of the XDA developers we can get this badboy's bands unlocked
I believe TBH is/will be working on this for the D3. Patience is a virtue...
I have been looking into this but I am not confident it will ever work.
The band lock has been moved into the radio image itself and without the ability to sign a radio image ourselves we won't be able to alter that. It is no longer accessible in the NVM as it was on the original firmware builds for D2G and Pro. This was done at the request of VZW to make it more difficult, if not impossible to do.
This is just a thought and I doubt it even make sense but could the radio be stripped from the Droid 3's gsm cousin the XT860 4G. They are virtually the same phone besides the fact one is CDMA while the other is GSM.

I'd suggest you buy a XT860 from Bell, in Canada. They use the same 3G bands as the AT&T network. It would also make it easier for you to unlock. Cost me 20$ to unlock mine, got the code within 15 minutes.

Ultimate D3 w/ US GSM & CDMA

So, as my backup GSM phone just crapped out (Unlocked Samsung 'Blackjack') I start pondering of D3 potential. Do people think theres a way to custom edit some files like the radio.img to enable the harnessing of US GSM bands while simultaneously preserving access to big reds 3g airwaves. I ask this because I have to use my overseas sim card once every couple months so it doesnt get deactivated. How much time could it require?
Thanks
Eric
Check over in the dev area. They've been unlocked and used on T-Mobile/AT&T already! There's a guide as to how to do it.
yes but that requires the crippling of the cdma radio.
Anyone know if it's possible?
I'm running my d3 on at&t u.s. right now, I don't have a foreign SIM to test with or I would test that method.

Running the S4 Active on T-Mobile, anything else I should do?

Hi all.
I have been using my AT&T S4 Active on T-Mobile for the past week. I got it unlocked via an eBay seller and everything has been working great thus far. I had a question though regarding bands and whether or not all the bands available to me are unlocked. Right now where I live I pick up 4G/LTE (although not as strong in my apartment and cuts in and out periodically). I had read that when you unlock a phone via the code it automatically unlocks the bands that were previously not available (when locked to AT&T). Another thread I read that the user has to still unlock those bands. I was hoping someone could clarify this and point me in the right direction! Thanks guys!

Are you able to use mobile data with only unlocking the phone? I am about to buy this phone but i heard after unlocking only call/sms will work and not data.
I read here that for data we need to do other stuff
This phone says " LTE Bands 2, 4, 5 and 17" on AT&T website and I'm wondering if this phone will work on other carriers LTE network(T-Mobile, Verizon, or others?)? I know Verizon is CDMA and at&t and T-Mobile are GSM but can anyone answer this?

I got the AT&T SGH-i537 model. Pay $15 to have it unlock. Now using it with T-mobile. I got LTE. In some area, I got 23mbps download and 3.6mbps upload. It doubled my Galaxy Nexus speed. The device status info said I am on LTE:14
However, my mobile tethering is disabled. Need to find a way to enable that. Stupid AT&T lock it.
As long as you have the correct setting input into your phone your data will work ( assuming you have a data plan). I remember when the original Iphone came out I unlocked it for T-mobile and had internet on it even though it was branded AT&T only. (EDGE lol 56kb speed) but still it worked...
Root
I unlocked mine with ATT and used it with TMobile while I was in Hawaii. I only had to put my SIM in and I got pretty fast speeds (around 22mbps from what I remember) I don't know if that's the normal speed but compared to the crappy speeds on Guam it was lightening speeds to me! No root or anything needed, no difference after rooting either.
i can confirm it works minus teathering due to att
This is interesting as I thought ATT phones cannot receive Tmobiles LTE.

Verizon Moto X on AT&T

So I'm looking to upgrade but don't want to be stuck in another 2 yr contract. I'm thinking of using Verizon's edge program and getting the moto x and then paying the rest off when my contract is up at the end of the year. I would like to know if its possible to then go with an AT&T sim card and prepaid option in the same phone?
I have read all Verizon 4G phones come sim unlocked. I can't find either if the Verizon version comes with the GSM radios necessary to do this.
Any help on the subject would be great! Really tired of Verizon..

The carrier issue aside (see above) you should not even consider upgrading with Edge unless you want to pay for you phone twice. It is a complete rip off.
All newer Verizon phones are gsm unlocked and will be able to do voice and most of them hspa+ data on ATT. Weather the lte will work really depends on the phone and what radios they put in it.

It is possible to use a GSM carrier's sim in Verizon's phones for both voice and data. What would you like as Proof?
I don't have an X yet, but....
I have both Verizon and T-Mobile lines for work. (Verizon for personal).
My T-Mobile phone is a Galaxy S3. When T-Mo started supporting the iPhone, our corp rep swapped my sim to a T-Mo Nano SIM for me.
Since then, I have put my T-Mobile sim into my Verizon iPhone 5, VZW Galaxy S4, VZW BB Z10, VZW BB Q10, and VZW Nokia 928. Doing so works fine for voice, data and text messaging on T-Mobiles network, but at EDGE speeds since these VZW phones don't support the 1700mhz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ bands that T-Mo uses. They do support the 1900mhz band that ATT uses, but I don't have an ATT sim handy to pop them in.
Oh, and I did need to use a SIM adapter to convert between nano and micro since only the iPhone 5 uses Nano sim. I do not recall results of trying to SMS, I really don't sms anyway.

I hate seeing this response all the time on Verizon devices. Most modern Verizon LTE phones do GSM just fine. Verizon used to call this being a "World Phone", but really all Verizon phones are world devices now. Galaxy S3/4, Note 2/3, all of Moto's phones, etc.
From the Verizon Moto X specs page:
Network
Network: LTE, CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
Global Network: EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900), HSPA/UMTS( 850/900/1900/2100), HSDPA 42.2 Mbps (Category 20), HSUPA 5.76 Mbps

The Droid Ultra connects to At&t without any modification required:
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/22/droid-ultra-can-connect-to-atts-hspa-network-out-of-the-box/
In the past some phones on Verizon with GSM capabilities were software restricted from connecting to US GSM providers.
Since the X works on ATT it should work with a Straight Talk ATT Sim card right?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
Yes
i think in the past verizon phones were GSM locked for only europe / asia and not US GSM carriers.
i think the moto x, and the droid ultra/maxx/mini are not GSM locked for US.
i just switched from verizon to t-mobile. and my last phone was a droid razr m. i unlocked the radio to be able to use t-mobile for a week before my moto-x came, and it DOES work on at&t / t-mobile.
in this case it supported at&t / t-mobile on edge and voice. with 1900mhz hspa+ at&t 3g (and refarmed t-mobile band). no LTE support.
i think the xt1060 is the verizon moto -x and it doesnt havef support for t-mobile HSPA + 1700/2100 AWS or the t-mobile or at&t LTE bands.
so if you bought a verizon moto x, and used it on at&t in the future you'd only get hspa+ 1900mhz at&T "4G". and edge/voice. but it should work fine.
I can confirm that putting my wife's iPhone 5 nano-sim into my Verizon Moto X does work, and I get H+ (7-8mbit) speeds.
Okay so the next question would be, does this also apply to Sprint's Moto X? I hope it does but I am not holding my breath.

i don tthink sprint has GSM unlocked by default. you'd have to find a way to unlock it, which from the sounds of it on this forum from other posters is not easy. probably have to be a sprint customer and say you are going on a trip to europe etc...
Maxx works...ish
I got a T-Mobile SIM for my VZW Droid Maxx (same chipset as the Moto X). With no changes to any settings it gets voice and text, and after manually inputting the T-Mobile APN I picked up H+ and the 1900 MHz 4G in my area. There's an article on Android Central with pictures of a Droid Ultra on a GSM network (I think AT&T).
That said, Verizon's tech support maintain that their unlocked phones aren't allowed to use any non-Verizon US carrier. They also said that if I take a U.S. T-Mobile SIM card roaming outside the US it will work there. The last generation of carrier locks were based on the nationality of the SIM card, not the tower, so that doesn't make much sense. Further reason to question anything tech support tells you.
I have a Verizon moto x and I placed my Att nano Sim in and I can only seem to get hspa+ not LTE. Other than that everything else seems to work fine.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"
