Ok first off. I am going to buy this Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet from Amazon. this coming Monday.
What I was needing cleared up for me is 2 things.
1: When I get this do I want run the Clockwork Mod 3 and then root it. Then do the update to 3.2? If so will I still have SU or will I lose that?
2nd Thing is that I have been reading here that there is no know way to root a 3.2 android phone / tab as the code has not been made open as of yet.
So here what I would like to have cleared up for me. In this post [Guide]New HC Rom: 506/507 + Installation Instructions [Including US 4G]. He talks about 2 ways of going about doing the rooting and Moding. But the 2nd one and the end of the 1st part he acts as if rooting the S7 after updating it to 3.2 is a cake walk. I would like to know a blow by blow of the best way once I get my S7 from the listed 2.2 that Amazon list it as coming per loaded with to 3.2 and to get SU ie root on it and working. With out turning an all most 300 buck toy into a doorstoper.

Oh as a side note I am not new to android or moding or rooting. As I have a T-Mobile Mythouch 3G 32B that is rooted and runs ginger yoshi 1.5. So I hope you can see that I read more that I ask. But in this case I thinks asking for some clearing up on this matter might not just help me but other users as well.
And yes I have looked for the info before I asked here.

To keep things simple, do not install clockwork mod or root your DS7 when you first get it. Don't even set it up or install any app, they will all be wiped after the honeycomb update. If you root it first, after the update it will be unrooted. Go straight to your settings, about phone, system updates to start downloading the Honeycomb update. When it finish download, the notification bar will notify you, drag down the notification bar and tap on the finished download notice. It will ask you if you want to run the update, answer yes and let it update. If after you download the update package and for some reason it does not start updating, follow the instruction here: http://streakblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-update-to-honeycomb-32.html

You got this wrong, the only way to root Honeycomb 3.2 is with clockwork mod recovery. To root your DS7 with Honeycomb, follow TheManii's post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288348
Thank you for that info. I now have a better understanding of it. And with fingers crossed I think should be able to do it with out making a doorstop out of my S7
I would not go to settings.
Instead, I would do the initial setup (language, timezone), setup wifi, and go use the link in this thread for downloading the update file.

Once the file is downloaded, slide down the notification bar and select the file. It'll launch...reboot and load HC.
Make sure you charge your Streak first.
NOTE: You might want to play with FROYO first to see how you like that. Then update. If you don't like HC, you can always use NVFlash to go back to stock.
Loving HC. Haven't found too many apps that do not work. I prefer Dolphin browser, but the stock is not bad. Youtube works great. I haven't tried HULU yet.
Movies work and look awesome, too, after changing the specs with HANDBRAKE.
Thanks but I know what throw up is like on a phone and there os no way I would use it on a tab. That I have played with HC on the Acer 7" tab in walmart and loved it on there the best part of that is was just 3.2 now added anything from acer.

With the 4.1.2 update, I blindly installed the OTA update when prompted and didnt realize there was a problem until i tried to access my stickmount USB drive. Luckily the nexus 7 was still unlocked so I didn't need to wipe everything. All i did was re-root it using Nexus Root Toolkit v. 1.5.4. and was back up and running. Is this going to be the same experience with the 4.2 update?
I have installed Voodoo OTA Root keeper v2.0.3 - is this a better route for upgrade instead of re-rooting via the Nexus Toolkit? And if so, how should I use it (do know much about the app).?
2) Is stickmount going to work? And if not, is there a good working alternative for streaming mkv h264 movies to MXPlayer (or other player)?
The main reason I rooted was to access a USB drive for playing movies, TV shows while traveling. We are heading off to Cabo for Thanksgiving and definitely want to be able to access and play movies from my stickmount'ed usb drive. Any suggestions ? Should I just wait to update - and if so is there any way to get the Nexus to stop prompting to install the update all the time?

1) I just downloaded the OTA 4.2 .zip, copied it to my N7, ran CWM and flashed it. When it asked about keeping recovery and keeping root, I said "yes" and it worked without a problem!
2) Works for me.

Sorry these answers need to be dumb'd down for me
1) If i already have the update downloaded via OTA trying to install itself, is it really easier/necessary to locate the zip you mention, copy it to the N7 (not sure where to copy) and run CWM (not sure what that is or where i get it or how to install it). Is there an easier way to accomplish the update? Perhaps setting the Voodoo Rootkeeper to preserve the root or temporarily unroot.. then just install the downloaded OTA update and then return the root? Or just installing the update and then running the re-root using the Nexus Toolkit (like I did with the 4.1.2 update)?
2) I would like to know more about how you avoided this issue described in this thread here with stickmount not functioning with v4.2 because of the new mulituser framework that causes it no longer to see files in the mounted folders.

i tried with OTArootkeeper app. but it don't update.... at restart for installing, it gave a black screen with android in the middle, with a RED icon inside it...... then it restart and 4.1.2 is always there
Perhaps these questions are so rudimentary that they hardly seem worth bothering with - but for some of us, these hacks and the info being thrown around in here are pretty confusing at times. I would be very grateful to anyone with some insight willing to help out?.
i found that this could be a problem with recovery mode... infact if i tr y to restart in recovery, it gave the same error...
i rooted with toolbox, and i'm thinking that it could have removed my recovery... now i'd like to try to recover the stock recovery with the same tool... but i'm not sure about that.

Hi! Last month I did the 4.1.2 OTA update. I was rooted but on stock. It updated with no problems. I used Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, restored the root, and either renistalled super su, or just updated the binary. Can't remember.....But I did lose my custom recovery. Didn't realize it till tonite when I went to do the 4.2 update.
So to your question. I forced the OTA 4.2 update. And it downloaded. I made sure voodoo rootkeeper was set to save the root. Then let it install. It rebooted. I opened voodoo, restored root, was asked to update super su binary, accepted. Still not rooted till I rebooted.
So far I have root, and am on 4.2 JB. So my goal was to get my custom recovery back on. Install goo manager from market. Open it, go to the settings button top right, it will give you the choice to install open recovery script. TWRP- Then it will ask you twice are you sure you want to do this and reboot? Say yes. Mine did not reboot and it looked like it did nothing. So, I flipped into recovery and Teamwinn recovery was installed. I made a backup, and rebooted.

If you have a minute, I would be grateful if you can just briefly confirm, describe specifically what I need to be checking/configuring in Voodooo (not very familiar with the app) prior to initiating the OS update, I would feel a little more secure before pulling the trigger.
It appears that many apps are still catching up with their own updates, including apparently stickmount (the reason I rooted) to handle the new 4.2 framework so I am thinking best to hold off until after thanksgiving vacation before applying the update.

Have you tried updating to 4.2 yet? Also i heard that if you update SuperSU to version 0.98 the latest version it could cause issues and you will have to reflash the device.

4.2 OTA already loaded, lost root
Hi, I have learned the hard way not to do the OTA upgrade. I just let the 4.2 OTA download when asked to. Now I lost my root that I had on my Nexus7 with 4.1.2. Still unlocked though. What can I do now to root it again and not lose all my apps and data?

Hi hinsdale! I am not a techie- I just learn as I go and read, read, read.
So, my voodoo app has 4 checks in the boxes. I seem to remember only 3 boxes checked when I did the update, but I'm not sure. It would make sense that all are checked.
After I updated, I opened the voodoo app first, and there is a box that says restore root. Then it asked if I wanted to update the su binary. Did that, still not rooted according to Tit. BU. Rebooted, then I was rooted. Good luck with your update.
I'm sorry I can't tell you how to run the initial save root on voodoo. I did it a while ago and don't remember, but it was not hard. Very easy.. Just make sure you Read, re- read, and read again before you do any modifications to your tablet. Know the possible bad outcomes, and be prepared to trouble shoot. This site is very good about helping you out if things go wrong. That's why it's a very good idea to be aware of the possible bad outcomes. The only way to know is to READ-READ=READ!
Did I mention READ??? lol. That's how I figure stuff out. If you read about others mistakes, you can avoid them. I also wait a day or 2 to see how it goes for others before I attempt modifications. That includes new roms. You never know what goes wrong until someone is the guinea pig! I am not techie enough to be the guinea pig!

same thing here...I tried to use TWRM to flash SU but it seems that after going into recovery using TWRM I can't see any any file or folder on my SD except 3 folders???? Can someone please help us....
YOu will need to search the best way to root again.
How did you root initially?? You may have to do it that way again. Just make sure the method is compatible with 4.2 JB.

Nexus Root Toolkit
The OTA update downloaded to my cache folder, I moved it to my sdcard. Wouldn't install since I had to fix a couple of files I had edited. So once those 2 files were fixed it installed just fine. Haven't had any issues yet.
The same on here...
But I guess it is better until they fix all this bugs they are reporting.

Hi have updated the nexus to 4,2 and used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to keep my root followed the instructions as I did when updated to 4.1.2,my Nexus appears to be rooted superSu is working also stickmount sees the usb but it will not show any files on the sd card any help here please to get it to see the files on the sd card, thanks for your time

i just downloaded and installed 4.2 OTA.
if your nexus was previously unlocked and rooted, it will download and install just fine. however you will lose root, but KEEP the unlocked state.
to root it again, you must goto "about tablet" and tap your build number 7 times to become a developer, this is not a troll, i got this info from another thread on xda.
then using the nexus root toolkit 1.5.4 with modeltype set to "android *.*.* any build", just do the root procedure.
reboot and ur in business, no need to update supersu, and busybox will still be installed already.
I looked back and read many "apparent" ways to stop automatic updating for the KFHD, but what is the best way that actually works? I just got my KFHD for Christmas and rooted it the other day but I am a noob and it took me ages to actually figure out how to do. So I don't want it to unroot itself.
Also how often is the KFHD's software actually updated and does each update wreck the root? Like I said I'm such a noob with this stuff!

I moved ota.zip to downloads and renamed it to a .bak--I am still on 7.1.5 no updates, fast simple.

Isn't it otacerts.zip? You can find it in system/etc/security folder. I think amazon has figured a way around this if you are running newer software versions already. Nice to know that it will still work if you are running older system versions. I tried it,actually deleted the .zip, and received an update. This was on an 8.9 running 8.1.3(ota to 8.1.4,most current) but most things work the same on the different models.
I've recently tried this, can't confirm if it works, but will let you know: disabled all services within the the ADCP(Amazon Device Client Platform) apk . I use Rom Toolbox, a great app with all the tools you'll need.
Reviving an old thread, but the Androidcowboy states that as of June 16, 2013, renaming the otacerts.zip file still works on the KFHD.

i want to root to enable the multi user option by updating the build.prop file, i've been able to connect with ADB but the device isn't visible in windows or mac (tried both) when you reboot into boot loader, in fact it doesn't appear to boot into boot loader it just seems to power off (when using ADB reboot command or choosing boot loader from the recovery menu) so i wonder if its locked out somehow??

I too just purchased a B1-850 tablet, but I've figured out how to root it. Really quite simple. Just use Kingroot:
1.) Navigate to https://kingroot.net/ from your tablet
2.) Download the APK for android
3.) Install said APK (this requires you to have allowed installation from unkown sources in the "Security" panel of the settings menu)
4.) Load up the app and follow its instructions
5.) Reboot and try it out
For good measure, I would also unlock the "Developer Options" panel and allow USB debugging (adb access) and such; I did this before proceeding. You'll have to search for instructions on that yourself, its well documented.
This all worked for me this morning! Really looking forward to unlocking the potential of this cheapy tablet.
Kingroot worked first try, just swap their super user program with supersu. I am having trouble installing the xposed framework though if anyone has any tips.
I was able to root, now I need to install a custom recovery. CWM says this model is not in the supported list. Has anyone been able to install a recovery? I need NANDROID backup functionality.

Did the B1-850 hardware updated in anyway? I was able to root it in June 2016, but after a screen repair and factory reset and fresh rom from acer, king root and all others can't work. I'm stuck without any root options. Any idea?

There was recently new firmware released for this tablet (08/24/16, Build #: AV0L0.RV09RC04.WW.GEN1), and a handful of updates (08/25/16, 08/26/16) from Acer. I have this same tablet, and I'm unable to root after flashing to the firmware released on the 24th, and latest firmware (Build #: AV0L0.RV0BRC02.WW.GEN1) as well. Hopefully someone can find a fix, as the few different methods I've attempted simply will not work with the latest firmware from Acer.
On KingRoot Please click submit search if enough people do they will find a root until then just hold tight.

I have done this a bunch, sadly still no love. It's annoying me not being able to root a relatively cheaper tablet, as these tend to get rooted first since they get in more people's hands faster. Oh well, just have to have patience.
Thanks, I was having problems, two different rooters failed and I wondered if it was the recent software update! The image version on my B1-850 is the same as you have quoted! Please post if you find a solution, some apps that need deleting are annoying.

This device has made an idiot of me. If I can be of any assistance finding a root exploit for this device let me know. I will gladly write a detailed procedure of the process. I made the mistake of assuming since it was an entry level, inexpensive device, the path to root would be simple. Three months later none of the common "one-click" programs has found an exploit. I have a copy of stock rom for recovery so testing is not a problem for me. It's a matter of pride at this point. So much so I found one on sale for $60 and bought it just for this purpose. I have followed every link I can find associated with this device to a dead end. Any help will be appreciated.

Same here, still no root for me. Usually these cheapo tablets are not as locked down.

I have given up getting assistance from xda on this device. Its as political here as anywhere else. I don't drive a Samsung so nobody wants to help with root. I've heard every excuse from locked bootloader (unlockable in dev options) to what one dev actually told me,"There's little interest in spending energy on an inexpensive device." I understand, but why misrepresent the site by implying all android devices are treated the same? Hell on the Iconia One 8 thread, it says that the B1-850 does not have a MTK SoC, but instead has an Intel Atom chip. Then they send you to another thread where, of course, there is no B1-850 listed! That's because it uses a MTK8163 SoC. In both tablets.
Did anyone's amazon fire tablet 7 come with 5.3.1 out of the box? What version did it come with? I am planning to buy one soon and I was wondering if anyone has bought one that had lower firmware on it? Thanks a lot!!

Based on self reporting the general trend seems to be 5.3.1 but you might receive any version depending on what the shipping warehouse has in stock. If you are seeking an older build (presumably 5.1.4 or lower) your best bet is a local retailer where you can check it out in the store before committing to a purchase. Turnover is often slower so better chance of scoring a 'dated' device.
Ok so my gf bought a Kindle fire for my birthday next month because I thought buy it sooner and it's more likely to have the firmware I want. I just opened it up to check the firmware before packing it away and fortunately it came with 5.1.3 out of the box. I didn't dare connect it to WiFi incase it updated lol. Just incase anyone is interested I bought this from Argos (UK) now I just need to figure out if I can downgrade and install a custom android ROM or just stick with fire OS and root. Fun times ahead

5.1.3 can be rolled back to 5.1.2 which is fully rootable. From there you can flash several custom roms. See forum index for detailed procedures.

Thanks, I looked into it. I just wasn't sure about using flashfire with 5.1.2 because I read before you can't get supersu on 5.1.2 only kingroot. Now I see there's a way to get supersu Can't wait for my birthday now, I feel like a kid again haha.
One question I haven't found the answer to yet which you might be able to answer for me. Well actually two Does the stock recovery have a backup feature like TWRP does? So if I mess up installing something and get a boot loop for example I can just recover the ROM and will that work with backing up an android ROM?
The second question is if I install android and something messes up can I just recover back to fire os by just installing the 5.1.2 .bin file? I've not looked at the stock recovery so I haven't seen the features or how exactly it works.

- stock recovery offers no backup/restore capability (thanks, Amazon)
- FlashFire does offer this feature along with an experimental restore from fastboot; read docs carefully to understand capabilities/limitations
- 3rd party backup tool offers best option to protect against personal data loss
- FireOS can be restored via stock recovery; be sure to use 5.1.2 bin; anything lower will brick device

OK cool thanks a lot, it's all making much more sense now, it a bit daunting at first as all my flashing experience is through TWRP which is much easier While I'm picking your brain though, one more question. Is there a way to backup the android ROM? Or if I get into a boot loop I have to restore 5.1.2 and then reinstall android again?
I'm feeling much more comfortable doing this now though knowing even if I completely mess up the rooting or installing android I can just restore the 5.1.2 firmware. For £50 this thing is a steal.
