Bad battery???? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, I need help finding out what is wrong with my Hero before I throw it out the window!!! I am having HORRIBLE battery life. I can unplug it and it's dead within 30 minutes at times. I am running the latest CyanogenMod 7 (GingerBread) 2.3 on the C Spire (Cellular South) network. I have recalibrate my battery to see if it would help but no change. I have also changed chargers but no change. I have checked to see if there is an app draining it but nothing is draining it no more then usual. This has been going on for weeks and when it started happening I had not changed anything on my phone. It just started happening out of the blue. Now I am having bigger problems out of it now that it is having trouble even getting a charge. For instance, when I plug it in sometimes it will charge and sometimes it won't. Sometimes it will start charging then stop. Like I said, I have changed chargers so I know it isn't a bad charger. Also the biggest problem now is that when I do get it to charge, it won't charge past 86%. It will stay there til I unplug it then it will drain down to 60% within 10-15 minutes, so now I can't even recalibrate the battery now to see if it will help. I thought well maybe my battery is bad but when I check the battery health in the settings it says Good. I do not have another battery to test it against. I also have freezing problems. Somethings it will freeze up and will not unfreeze. I will have to eventually take out the battery and reboot it. Then if I don't let it set for a little bit after I reboot it and I touch it during that time, then it will freeze again and I have to reboot it again. I really LOVE my phone, I have had it for a little over a year now! I have never had any problems like this out of it! PLEASE HELP ME!!! THIS PHONE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY NOW!!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Anyone? PLEASE!
I just tried my sis in law's battery and no change. She has an HTC Hero also.

$5 on Amazon
Or
After a complete drain, Charge while its off overnight then turn on but into recovery so u can erase battery stats. Then reboot
Either way I'd still spend the $5 and u can probably find free shipping for black Friday.
U can also try a ROM called hero deck without adding anything. This ROM rocks on the battery life. Then for giggles put it in airplane mode with wifi off to see if it drains...
Good luck
V's CDMA Hero

It will not charge while it is off, that is another problem I'm having.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

It is not the battery cause I put my battery in my sis in law's phone and she played on it forever and the battery did not drain and it also charged fast. I put her battery in my phone and it drained fast and would hardly charge, just like my battery does in my phone. So it is not a battery problem, it has something to do with my phone. BUT WHAT?!?!

Just to rule out if something didn't went wrong during flash of CM7. Try a different ROM and see if it same issue.

I did, I tried the ROM vidaljs suggested. Still draining my battery!

What charger ru using?
Is it different than ur sisters charger. That could be the problem.
I use a blackberry charger that has the same power output. So verify that the wires are not damaged and if it's not the hero charger then verify the proper power output.
V's CDMA Hero

I have used HTC charger, Blackberry charger, and Garmin GPS charger all with the some result, slow to no charge. The main problem is it draining too fast. Last night I unplugged my phone, which was on 40%, walked next door to my sis and bro in law's house, which is about 100 ft away, when I walked in their house it was on 11%!

Any suggestions?

Well if u visually look into the female plug on phone.. does it look damaged?
If not perhaps it may just be damaged in another way.
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk

It looks fine. I had a Hero before this one and the charger port did break but this one looks ok!

Well I have kinda solved my problem! I have the cable to my charger pulled tight and taped to the side of it and it is charging now, but it take literally all day and all night for it to get a full charge! It still drains FAST when unplugged! This still does not explain the fast battery drain and how it still won't charge on other chargers that I know work! Oh well, C Spire has a Holiday Sale going and I can get a Samsung Galaxy S for FREE, plus my $65 replacement fee since I have only completed 20 months of my 24 months! So $65 for a Samsung Galaxy S sounds like a good deal to me!!! This might be one of my Christmas presents from my hubby! I might get him one too! Gonna miss my Hero though! Good times, good times!!!

Right on.... ur issue still bugs me when j think about... but a new phone compared to the hero is awesome. I got the nexus S 4g last week for free except for taxes and activation and it is awesome.
So the galaxy does sound like a great plan and gift
Good luck

Try another Rom Super D v1.9.3 and SuperFast v1.3.3 are excellent Donut (1.6) ones to test your battery issue.
ok ill try out SuperD thanks
I will bet that your battery issues are not ROM-related. Being that its an after-market battery, and used, it's probably outliving its life spam. To my knowledge, batteries are meant to provide a certain number of charges, every time you plug the power cable into the phone to charge it, that constitutes for one charge. Whether its for 5 minutes, or 5 hours. They usually have a set number, somewhere around 500 charges. After that, it slowly stops holding a solid charge.
I would suggest buying a NEW battery, not used.

Youre assumption is correct, thats why I directed him to flash a Donut rom to test and see if the short battery life occurs again.
Until we hear from him we wont be 100% in our hypothesis.
Youve gotten ahead of me and commented about the battery being the culprit, damn, beat me to it. ha ha ha.
i would say its lasting longer, but only by 1 to 2 hours more. so im going to buy a new battery. thanks for the advice tho
ALSO, while downgrading to Donut, While wiping, MAKE SURE your battery is FULLY CHARGED and wipe the battery stats. Check back.
ok my battery wasnt fully charged while wiping everything and downgrading. instead of re-flashing and downgrading can i just re-calibrate my battery? sorry for the late reply
me too
same rom - same problem .
i have a genuine battery , my g1 last one hour and 12 mins with the super froyo rom.]
real shame as i love the rom .
I have that rom and it the best battery life I have found so far on this phone...
There's a thread similar to this bellow and I recommended this:
3 thinks you can do
1)check for a better rom and\or verify if your gps, wi fi and on while this happens
2)Recalibrate your battery
2A Discharge it until it shuts itself off.
2B) Recharge it back to full and then leave it charging for another few hours even after it says it is full
2C)repeat if needed
3)buy a new one...
Good luck

[Q] Lg Thrill system eating my battery

It seems my android system is destroying my battery , it is always at the top of the list with display usually coming in well under. This screen shot was taken with very little use today. I upgraded the battery to the andida 1980 mah battery and I have been using juice defender ultimate and I do get a few more hours out of the device but the android system is still the largest drain. any ideas or suggestions would be great.

Its normal for a stock thrill. But that doesn't mean it should be that way necessarily... I have gb on my other two phones and android system has always been toward the bottom.

Welcome to the club. I charge mine twice a day at least.
Dude, no kidding. I charge mine 2-3 times daily, plus the whole time driving to and from work. Android eats normally 50-60% of my battery. Sadly, I still love it. Plus I work for at&t selling these things. I tried the 3500mah battery, but I hate having a naked phone.
I'm not sure what I'm doing different but my android system is at 30-39%
sent from my Lg Thrill running Thriller. Using the XDA app.
They say it's some sort of system glitch but no one knows the cause. I'm running Thriller which is amazing. Much better than stock. These phones have a lot of potential.
Change the Launer, try Launcherpro, after installing the launche reboot and see.
After a ton of research this is what I've found. I think its the answer as to why the battery is getting drained, but there doesn't seem to be a fix. I installed Juice Defender which has throttled my OS from coming on and leeching the internet whenever it feels like it. Sometimes I get cell standby, phone idle and display above android OS, which is a god send.
I found this out using Battery history and Betterbatterystats.
The main culprit seems to be the Suspend command. Google knows about this issue and LG had to of known but they released Froyo on the Thrill anyway.
Issue 11126
I use watchdog to monitor mine. At first I set it to alert me if it ever went above 30% which should be way to much but I got it so often I decided to move it up to 50% to give it a little extra time to "suspend" my phone. I get less alerts now so it must be working eventually but I've had it alert me at 80% before...suspend....using 80% processing power to put my phone to sleep?!?!? Thats rediculous. So you go into the "partial wake" section of betterbattery and battery history and you find out that the main culprit of keeping your phone awake and fighting "suspend" is either the "dialer" or "datatracker". Dialer seems to encompass anything that uses the internet but I could be wrong so that one is pretty broad. DataTracker turns out is your Fast Dormancy. There are many threads on the internwebs that tell you how to disable fast dormancy as its more of a neusance than usefull if the carrier isn't tuned right for it but none of these seemed to work for me so for now I'm stuck letting dialer and FD fight Suspend and just catching it when I can with Watchdog. Gingerbread can't come soon enough and hopefully its a version that fixes this as many users in the "issue" thread were using GB.
I lost tons of sleep over this and the only thing I could do was install Juice Defender. I hate depending on a 3rd party app to control and throttle everything on my phone but so far I still get all my push emails fairly instantly and really don't even notice its there, I still just hate the idea of it. but, for now it works. Yesterday I was at 27% after 17 hours of moderate use. Phone calls, emails, texts and maybe even some 3D gaming but I couldn't remember for sure. I also use Battery Graph to give myself a visual representation of my battery throughout the day and that helps me see when and where my batter is getting drained or if its going to sleep properly. Keeping my Wifi on also seems to drain it so unless I need fast internet I have it off. It doesn't seem to sleep properly when its on even if I have it set to "sleep when screen off" as the phone still likes to "partial wake" and run wild on the net.
Sorry if its long winded and confusing but after tons of research on this I've come to accept what I've found. I hope it has helped someone.

I also changed my launcher to Go Launcher and it helped LG Home stop using battery.
So there I started out at actually 70%. After swapping to launcher pro, rebooting, and charging, it's gradually gone down to 40%

My android system is at 23% with GO Launcher EX. It's the third at my list with Cell Standby leading with 34%
I've been unplugged for about 2 hours now. Oddly enough my phone only says 21 minutes. Android system is back at 67% and standby is at 10%.

You all have to remember froyo isn't the greatest when dealing with resources hence why Gingerbread was released so hopefully once we get that update things will be much better.
If you use cwm, try battery calibration. when you reset it the battery meter become more accurate.
I use up my battery from 100% downto 40%really fast. but the remaining 40% looks far more than the first 60%

Not that it wouldn't charge, but the touch screen goes crazy while trying to use it on the after market charger. Once removed it was fine.

Fried battery?

I was using a wifi tether on my phone running PCForce's CM7 and my phone restarted (it was connected to my PC via USB) and when it came back on it said "Charging 0%" and whenever I unplug it it switches off, never seen this before but it seems, to me, like the battery has been fried anyone think the same.
I also have a spare battery that works fine, which also tells me that it is some problem with the battery, and running a wifi tether can heat things up a bit which brought me to that conclusion.
Anyone wanna throw any ideas on if its possible to fix it, I am now using the battery that came with the phone but it has a crack near the contacts which doesn't fill me with confidence.

try with 600 mHz it solved the problem for me
With mobile data and Wifi tethering enabled, my phone can get up to 52 degrees celsius in some cases without charging. I usually turn the phone off and take out the battery for a few minutes for it to cool down. I guess a temperature that high is caused by overclocking. I'm not sure if its damaging or not but I do prevent progression of operations in that temperature.
I also have a crack on the battery. Had it for a few months now and no problems so far
How 'cracked' is it?

I don't think the crack will be that much of a problem. If you want, you could take it to someone experienced just to be sure.

My battery cracked as well, but it has been dropped a few times...
It is a real shame because my previous LG phone was the LG Viewty and that was an amazingly well built phone. Cost ~£100 and came with an amazing camera and 3G front facing camera too. Shame it didn't have android. So I don't know why LG decided to go really cheap on the build qualities - you'd think having cracked batteries would have come up in their design tests but they probably didn't care...
I got the same trouble...

(HELP) Phone consumes more battery than charge?!

Hi guys,
I have an incredible S rooted and running on Android Revolution HD 2.20 . Had that ROM for a month without any problems until today I charge my phone while using my YooBao (11200mAh) external charger , and it told me that my phone consumes more power than the charge, please close all unused applications.
I was like totally lost. I had that charger for almost half a year and it worked perfectly on my device without any problems.
Now the problem that I'm experiencing is that my phone discharges faster than it charges. and that totally sucks. I need some advice,
Could it be my battery faulty or was it the charging port?
My thoughts are your "YooBao" has ruined either your battery or the phone itself.
Hopefully it's just the battery..
That's usually why phone manufacturers ask you to use their products in comparison to other "suppliers"
Update:
I flashed Nik's v4.5 over my ARHD and I tested it by leaving it to charge until 63%.
Feeling glad that at least it's charging up to 63% , I concluded that my port isn't damaged although I wasn't able to charge using my external charger. Pretty pissed.
I went up to my phone and used it while it was charging . To my horror , the 63% dropped to 61% while I was using and STILL CHARGING . WTF?
Now i'm gonna wipe all my apps and do a clean flash and no titanium backups for me .
God.. help
Did you have gps WiFi or large processes running in the background? It could easily do it.

Well , initially I thought it was , until I wiped my phone and didn't restore my apps and I'm sure it wasnt the processes that are causing this **** . Charge my phone overnight and my phone stops charging , woke up to find that my phone is only at 50% charge and the percentage drops super quickly.
Can anyone tell me whether the charging port or the battery is covered under warranty if it's within my warranty period?
Any advice whether I should get an Ankers' battery or should I purchase another original battery that cost me SGD$68?
Couple of things you could have a look at. Check in your battery menu that your phone is on AC charge mode. Also install current widget to see how many mA your phone is drawing while in use and to check the difference when its on charge. The original charger supplies around 900mA to the phone @ around 10%.

After a day of test.
Finally I got tired of it and I did a simple test to really test whether my battery is draining too much or not.
I plugged in my phone yesterday night to charge at the AC adapter, surprisingly it was charged to 100% straight with no problems.
I was tired alrd and I used an iPhone 3G as a spare phone. Throughout the day I carried 2 phones out and I noticed something:
At the end of the day, my InCs still had 78%. (WiFi 3G off) .
It means that the draining of my battery is not as bad as it seems. The real problem is that I am unable to charge properly.
When im charging at 61% , I use the phone when it's charging, the percentage can drop to 58% (which is not possible as my GPS is not on) .
So advice people:
Should I?
1) Get a replacement battery,
2) Bring to the service centre (No warranty left and pay)
Do you think:
1) Port problem
2) battery problems.
Let me know

It's for me a usage problem, got the same message too. You're running too much apps at once and never use a taskkiller. You also had GPS WiFi and Mobile Network on and maybe at full brightness. Close apps, I think you need not GPS while charging and if you have a WiFi connection mobile network isnt to be on.

Anyone have a defective battery issue?

So my One has been charging slow, I know, they made a safety feature where is it will charge slowly to protect the battery from losing its recharge capacity.
BUT this is very slow, I mean overnight charging and still 70%!
I called tech support and the dude said going under 15% battery and charging is really bad for the phone, something about this phone has a Li-On battery vs some other battery tech for the older HTC phones.
I work in security and it is very slow work and I'm constantly on the phone and get to 15% quite fast in my 8 hour shift.
I took it to sprint for a radio issue and the dude said sprint will not replace the phone since over 14 days and said HTC will charge me $50! to give me a new phone! The HTC tech didn't tell me any of that because he told me it could take 2 weeks to get the phone back from repair, so I declined it.
So long story short, it takes over 6 HOURS to charge my phone, when plugged in and in use battery will not recharge either!

So my One has been charging slow, I know, they made a safety feature where is it will charge slowly to protect the battery from losing its recharge capacity.
BUT this is very slow, I mean overnight charging and still 70%!

(i'm rooted and he isn't, also i'm on a custom rom and kernel)

Yeah..my Galaxy S3 was 100% from 5% in about 2 hours. I'm even on power saver. I don't play games, just youtube videos, internet surfing or email/text.
HTC better give me a a new phone or replace for free!

I think it is a defect because mine charges very fast. From 20% to 80% in about an hour and half. Running pure stock though

^^^^ Nail in the coffin right there... Now to call HTC and get a new phone or new battery put in. Really disappointed with the quality control from them.
Both of my one's charge well.
Fwiw:
Assumimg you don't have insurance your true options would be
Pay a Sprint corp repair store $50 and they will test and replace if necessary. 3-5 days
Call and deal with HTC ..??? Who knows timeframe
Sounds like the was a miscommunication somewhere
Tell more though? Stock rooted..many things can contribute to battery and charging issues.
What is the "radio issue"
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app
I am completely stock. I don't root my phones until I feel they are slowing down.
The radio issue was the "sim card locked" please power cycle error with multiple dropped calls.
Sprint guy fixed that by "tweaking" the radio signal.

I don't think anyone took the time to read your question.
The phone will charge quickly if it is idle and isn't in use.
The phone will charge STUPID SLOW if it is in use. Typically 10 hrs + to recharge up to 100% if you are a) talking on the phone b) using an app (games) that will truly utilize the hardware of the phone. As far as I can tell, this IS a built-in security feature to preserve the life of the battery.
Example: My past phone batteries would get VERY hot when I am talking on the phone and charging it, but it charges quickly. But long-term effect is that the battery dies within a few months.
The HTC One's battery doesn't get hot while it is charging.
Hope that answers your question.
Buy a nexus 7 charger it will charge quicker

No, even when I am charging overnight AKA sleeping that phone will not get to 100% after I take it off the charger in the morning. Max it gets to is 70%
I'll call HTC again and demand they fix this battery for free or I'll provide them with bad publicity through the internet

My phone will actually lose a charge while charging and using navigation and I have had my battery overheat a couple times while charging and using nav and also while charging and using tango video chat. Phone was blazing hot. Best just to not use phone while charging

Some of you guys are missing the point.
THE PHONE DOES NOT CHARGE EVEN WHEN LEFT ON CHARGE FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT!!!
If that is not a defective battery then what is? If this was my evo 3d I would just buy a new battery not make a big deal but since this "One Piece" BS has trapped the battery inside, I am unable to fully use a brand new phone just months into its ownership!!!
