[Q] Total android newbie question(s) - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am an android newbie expecting my note in the next 48 hours or so.
In the meantime I am trying to read all I can but, I admit, I feel a bit confused.
Before I do anything silly is there a way to take a full backup/image of my phone in a way I can restore it to its original state (as when I've received it) before rooting or installing custom rom/kernel or anything?
Also anyone cares to explain the differences between all these letters kj1 kj4 kk4 etc...
Thanks

Without rooting I don't think backing up an image is possible.. and for those letters they are different firmwares for different regions...

Thank you for the reply so, in your opinion, what is the first thing to do? Root? Then take an image backup ? If ao uaing what ?
Usually I shld stick to the firmware letters that shipped with my phone? I guess I can Install anyone I want right? If so the decision should be based on what?

Get the phone play with it a week or 2 if it can't do what you want and the only way to make it work as you want us to root flash then ask again. Don't flash it if you don't need to. I did flash root my old ace because it was to slow and low memory. The note is with a update from kies ATM. Dunno what I will do when ICS as custom ROM comes before Samsung releases one. Till then I am fine with my phone/ROM I think. Except a pen problem everything else is fine and because I don't use the pen where the problem is (on photo editor) I don't mind it.

I can't find the original thread about the KJ4 and KK4, etc... but it breaks down like this:
1st K stands for year
J = 2010
K = 2011
L = 2012
etc...
2nd K stands for month
J = October
K = November
L = December
A = January
etc...
The # at the end is the version.

The short answer is that any program that needs to mess around with the operating system itself or directly access operating system files will need root access.
Most people don't need or care to have root access.
What I have used root access for:
The biggest one of course is writing to the system area to install custom roms.
Titanium Backup uses root access to backup all the program databases (including system programs)
Droidwall tweaks the network settings for firewall access.
Chainfire messes with graphics drivers, etc.

Android is not the most intuitive operating system and I'd suggest playing with your phone for a while before you go messing with it. You'll also have a better idea of what you want/don't want and can then select an appropriate ROM should you go that route.
I don't know of any way to backup your current phone's state.
You can use something like Titanium Backup/Nandroid to back up all your apps and reload them. But a FULL backup i.e. restore your program to the stock rom? I don't think that exists.

File properties
I am also an android newbie with a question:
I have a Tomtec tablet with Android 4. On my pc, I have Windows XP 32 bit, Total Commander 8.0.1 and TotalAndroid 4.0. Communication between TotalAndroid and the tablet works well, but in total Commander I don't see file properties such as file extension, file size. What I do see is the file name and the icon that is associated with t he file extension. Doe anyone know how to fix this?

Check Dr ketans thread in stickies of development section, download whichever ics you require, lrq being the latest, then flash with pc Odin. Simples.
I suggest rooting using Dr ketans guide and flashing a safe kernel afterwards.

If you are looking for Samsung Firmwares latest is 2.3.5 (not Official for all regions). There are many custom roms (not by sasmung) available to install and most of them are based on GB 2.3.4 (so they are also like latest). Please find more info in their threads in Development section of Galaxy Mini forum.
Updating will remove all your apps, settings, data, etc. and install a new firmware. So, it is a most to do a backup of your apps, contacts and other data first. You data on sd-card will be safe.

Nothing offensive but that's why noobs shouldn't root their phones.
What android version do you have btw?
If it's 2.3.4 you could try yagya's tutorial on his site: yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-popmini.html
If it's lower, you should consider flashing 2.3.4.

Root 2.3.6 (LA1 Kernel)

Hey guys I recently posted a question about this on the general forums but let me explain why I repost it here.
So basically I wanna root my phone so I can use chainfire3d or some app similarly named but you have to be rooted to use it. So previously I was on a kernel KL3 which one of the expert people told me that KL3 can't be rooted or rather have issues rooting so I kinda gave up rooting but.... anyways I recently got a kernel update to LA1, I'm still on 2.3.6 but this time with a different kernel. So I was hoping atleast I might be able to root this kernel but I don't know how, I recently tried using unlockroot software but it gave me a 'failed to get shell foot's which in the website's FAQ said they cannot help imwith that error. So I was wandering if anyone can help me with rooting my phone on a LA1 kernel and please do privies detailed instructions and links if possible as I'm still new to this 'android scene' and I don't want to brick my phone. Also I'm not fond of the idea to downgrade my phone to 2.3.5 just so I can root, I rather wait for 4.0 update then hopefully when a root for ICas arrives then ill root it.
How I wish rooting is as simple as jailbreaking for my iPod
Composed on my Samsung Galaxy Note using XDA Premium app
You cant root LA1 too directly.
Read this post

Well that's a bummer, can I ask why haven't people created a software to root LA1 kernel as I hear its fast for android phones to get root as they are open sorce software.
Anyways correct me if I'm wrong but if i wanted to root I have to wait for the ICS software then root afterwards or I will not be able to root ever?

I cant see this cud be happen so early, better to get old version, Root it. then update to LA4 or any new version with keeping excisting root intact, as i have mentioned above. whether this method will work with ICS or not, is also difficult to say right now.
im going through the same predicament...
Galaxy note LA1 Firmware.
So now my options are ?
1. Downgrade to 2.3.5 ? and r00t and then get back to the latest firmware while keeping r00t
2. Wait for ICS ?
3. Load a Custom Rom like Rocket Rom ?
What are the issues with loading a custom rom? i will get r00t automatically right ? but the Flash counter ?
1. that is the choice shud be.
2. No guarranty ICS will have direct root.
3.Without root How you can install custome ROM? it certainly raise counter, if flash with PC odin
Doc ketan : Thanx for your prompt reply
LA1 is working fine in the non-r00ted avatar on my phone, now the Thread >> [20.01.2012][CF-Root 5.0] KJ1/4/6, KK1/9/A, KL1/3/7/8, LA1/3/4 - su+bb+CWM5 << says it can r00t the LA1 firmware.
What do you recommend should i go ahead with CWM??

No it won't Root LA1, it is just for CF Root for LA1, if you are rooted, then you can get LA1 CF Root.
Ok just to let everyone know and those still struggling to get your notes rooted basically do this.
Use pc odin and flash your phone to a lower firmware (don't worry it will go fine if you read the instructions and follow them no yellow triangle and stuff)
I used India KL1 stock rom from samfirware.com (be warned it takes very long to download it if you don't have a premium hotfile account so if your expecting a 5 minute thing then forget it, took me about 3 hors jlto do the entire thing)
Just use the India KL1 even if your note is not from india or use whatever other rom you feel comfortable with, just make sure its rootable
So after flashing your note with Pc version of odin then use unlock22 software to root your phone, which takes about 10 minutes.
Then finally download your firmware you were on or the one you want (in my case was a LA1) and use mobile odin to flash it
The reason why you do this long method to flash is because LA1 kernel is not directly rootable meaning it can be rooted but you MUST use this longer meathod.
At the end of it all my phone is still functioning fabulously like before but only difference is it is more free than before since its rooted and no loss of data.
I wanna thank Dr. Ketan a lot as he was the one who helped me with my long list of questions without getting annoyed so I appreciate it and thank you from the bottom of my heart, so basically Dr. Ketan is the best and just follow the links in his signiture if you want to root your galaxy note.
Once again thank you Dr Ketan (you rock) and this thread's question... is solved!

Hey Can you point to an Odin tutorial please? I am having the same situation and I understand everything but the Odin part!
Just follow the links on the dlsigniture of Dr Ketan

what about those Custom ROMs?
some of them are very interesting to try.
i might even re-partition my SGS, so i can learn how to update, root, and install ROM's myself.
i'm not even sure if my phone already has a MOD in it or if its already rooted, i still don't have it now. but i'll have it this weekend.

Each ROM is customised differently with different features. Basically stay stock if you do not know what features you want.
DO NOT flash a any ROM until you have backed up your EFS folder (google hint = IMEI).
If you ask what is your EFS folder you are not ready for a non stock ROM.
On most proper instructions for flashing a rom, EFS backup step is compulsory.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
If you really need a reason to stay on stock:
1. You need to get used to the phone.
2. You never flashed SGS until now.
3. You have not read anything the other forum colleagues gave you.
4. You did not even tried to search the forums before posting this.
5. You might brick the device and then get back here and complain.
Need more? Sorry, but before posting you, and others that want everything on a plate, should use search and read everything posted here.
The "Galaxy S I9000 General" section clearly says: Discussion about the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 (tips & tricks, etc)
Every custom rom has a "How To" section in the OP. Also, every rom has a "What to do in case of" section. So you can try it on your own. There were cases in which the owner hardbricked the device in the first 45 minutes after he received it. So be careful.
i don't know what EFS even mean.
i'm just lazy to read all of it and there's not much i can understand.
so maybe you're all right that i stay with the stock firmware.
my phone still hasn't arrived, i'll just post here again what firmware it has and how should i update it.
btw, one more thing, so custom ROM's acts like a customized Android firmware, is that right?
and thanks for everyone who replies here and gives me their advices.

Again many this has been covered on many threads relating to flashing ICS ROMS in particular. Flashing can result in the IMEI number being over written Your IMEI is stored encripted in a file contained in the EFS folder (IMEI = unique number that identifies your handset on the mobile networks) and then not being able to make or recieve phone calls in extreme examples to random apps downloading from google play or not able to access google play at all.
For more info on this i strongly suggest that you google "backing up EFS folder" and "backing up IMEI"

but there's a custom ROM that has been leaked that looks like Android 4 (ICS).
will there be a Android 2.4?
i never knew that Android needs a lot of work compared to iOS where it just needs to be jailbreak for you to have the freebies and to be open source.
Iphones run on a common HARDWARE
Android have many different versions of hardware ie Samsung, HTC etc etc etc
Each android phone requires the base code of Android to be customised with device specific drivers etc hence the difference between Android and Iphones.
Your wording is exactly that "CUSTOM" meaning not a Samsung ROM.
As stated before Samsungs stance with the SGS 1 is that they will not release ICS for the handset as there is not enough available RAM (memory) for ICS and their Touchwiz apps
i think i want to install a ROM if i get my Galaxy S by tomorrow.
which one is much better?
CyanogenMOD or DarkyROM?

Yes, There are many guides and ROMs available in development section. But I'm new to ICS flashing. I need a proper guide that starts from the beginning.
Thank You
I think this one is the easiest to understand and follow.

ICS Repack Problems
Hi all,
I managed to flash ICS Repack by Chainfire on my galaxy note today. It is pretty cool and really fast. But I've few questions to ask regarding this new ROM. Please be kind enough to direct me to a appropriate thread if these questions are already been asked and solved.
After I flash ICS Repack, I cannot find CWM anymore. What happened to it ? and how I can get it back ?
How I can go back to my old GB rooted ROM (I've CW backup of that rooted LB2 GB ROM) ?
By now, this ICS version cannot render South Asian languages. but LB2 rendered it very well. Are there any option to get that language support on this ICS ?
I need to change this Keyboard (Chinese) to English. Any other method to change it (Instead of installing GO Keyboard) ?
In our county phone numbers have two formats (our numbers are start with "0" but receiving calls don't have that starting "0" ). But in this ICS ROM, those 2 numbers are Identifying as two different numbers. Any method to fix that issue ?
Can I get my CPU speed to 1.4GHz again ?
Please be kind enough to help me on these matters.
Thank You.
This is why users should study BEFORE they flash. Anyways. Flash CWM, boot it, resrore backup. Cant help you much. Just got my Note happy studying

Thanks ... !!!
Stick with GB for now...people working with ICS around here like to make you jump through hoops just to get your phone to work...so if you're not will to spend the time on it, then stick with GB...no fuss, no muss.
The answer to 3. is a very simple 'yes, you can always go back'.
Also, massive thanks for updating your OP with the answers you have found. If only all question-askers did this.

Well as far as I know, you can't root your phone using "update.zip" if your phone is running Gingerbread.. you would either have to flash a rooted kernel or a rooted firmware using Odin... but you don't have to root it if you just want to upgrade to Jellybean.. just download the Indian Jellybean firmware (DULP8) and flash it with Odin or with Heimdall, then root it with the zip file - but for all that you need a Windows PC...

My galaxy y also runs on gingerbread and i rooted it with that update.zip file.... Am pretty sure thats possible with galaxy s advance as well(theres not much difference b/w galaxy y and s advance software wise) ... All my techno frnds told me that only xda can solve my problem.....
Edit: i have a macbook pro, so is it possible to run odin on it?

No dude as far as I know, a Galaxy S Advance running Gingerbread can't be rooted using the usual "update.zip" method (but I maybe wrong)... But it works when you upgrade to Jellybean... So why not directly upgrade to Jellybean?
And no, Odin is for Windows users only... you should use Heimdall if you are using a Mac... But I think Heimdall also works for Ubuntu and Windows as well.... Any ways here's the link to Heimdall... For more info, checkout this guide....
Or if you have a copy of Windows with you right now then you can use Bootcamp too right?
EDIT: Thanks for backing up Shaaan

Not all jellybean firmwares are laggy or buggy... the Indian firmware (DULP8) is quite smooth.. and if you flash a custom kernel like CoCore E 7.0 then your phone's performance will increase drastically... :good:
And in my opinion, Jellybean is far better than Gingerbread - but it consumes are bit more RAM and Battery than Gingerbread...

Its always better to follow the instructions mentioned on XDA.. Since these are likely to be safe and tested.... Stuffs mentioned on webpages aren't always safe or tested... Plus I did not see "i9070" in the list of compatible devices...
jellybean is not so bad.. been using if for a while now..
with only root and swap sdcard to internal as my modification..
i have two units of SG Advance..
At first I was worried too to upgrade to Jelly Bean, but after tried out a few rom, I think upgrading to Jelly Bean has been a good decision. Not going to gingerbread anymore.
:cries:
Me too, I want to root gb
But without the need to download another firmware for that, cause my internet is pretty slow (2kb/s)
So can anyone give me a detailed explanation for the root

Hello
Do i loose my warranty if i flash my kernel on JB because of lag problems
@balajinaik123: Yes. Rooting your phone and flashing (installing) anything that is not made my Samsung will void your warranty... But there's one more thing.. If your phone is still under warranty period and if you wish to claim it then simply Factory Reset your phone and/or flash Samsung's 4.1.2 firmware with Odin.. Doing that will remove Root Access or any Custom kernel you have installed.. Also make sure to keep your Binary Counter at Zero...
I did root using this method:
http://supergeekforum.org/how-to-ro...dvance-i9070-gingerbread-2-3-6-all-firmwares/
Since my firmware was LD1 already, I could make the process in a easy way
Just read carefully and you'll be fine!!
