Poor Video sound quality - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I have horrible sound recording during videos. My first video was shot in the bathroom and I thought maybe the sound was overwhelming for the mic bit after further review I have noticed that all of mu videos have bad sound. Inside /outside and everywhere in between. Any ideas?

Video on mines been excellent sound has left something to be desired, guess the real question is what kinda video are you shooting in the bathroom lol jk

Hahaha...my 2 yrs twins were in the bath.
That worries me that no one has had an issue. I bought mine off Craigslist and can't return it to the store...I'm sure htc would fix it but I don't want to send it in. Sad face
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium

I've also noticed the sound on mine being a problem. It seems if the sound is too loud, it just turns into static. Does anyone have a solution to this? Possibly a different video recording software that works better than the OEM software on the Vivid?

Have you tried checking the videos on your computer? HTC has a rep for putting bad speakers in their phones.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium

I've played the videos on the computer with the same results. I just didn't know if there is a setting for equalizing the Mic.

It's not just you. Look at the sample videos on YouTube and you'll notice the same poor sound quality on all of them.

I am starting to think this maybe an audio driver issue or cheap audio hardware. I get poor sound through mu headphones as well. Its not very loud and sounds seem blended together. Missing my infuse and voodoo sound. Sad face
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium

I get good sound through the headphone jack as well as the earpiece and speaker but I will agree that sound quality in videos is crap. The mic gets constantly overwhelmed with sounds that aren't even that loud, and in playback that results in momentary muting of the sound altogether.

Yeahhhh, I'm really disappointed in the video sound quality. I was at the Watch The Throne (jayz and kanye) show a few days ago and got some reeeeally good videos.. However the audio is pure static and white noise. Smh

Mine is fine. No better no worse than my i4s was.

No problems here...works gr8

Uncheck stereo recording and see if that helps. That's one of the solutions for the Sensation and Amaze. (We suffered the same problems.)

Same problem
My wife complains all the time that since switching from my iPhone 3Gs to the Vivid she can barely hear me during phone conversations. I have also had terrible luck with the audio on my video recordings. I was trying to record my son's band, and I thought the drums were just too much for it to handle, but I just recorded a very mild piano recital with the same results. The audio playback on both the phone and computer are terrible. It just sounds like it is coming in waves. I hope there is a patch that they can release to correct this problem.

I've learned that the BEST way to get mediocre (at best) audio is to use my old iPhone headphones (that has a mic built in).. I'm going to a concert tonight. I'll test out the quality then. I'll post a vid on YouTube if it's up to par.

I actually started using lgcamera from the market. I get consistent 30fps and if you change the sound options to aac, 44100khz, 128kbs it sounds amazing. It's still mono but no more Mic clipping or gain issues. Much better than HTC camcorder with mono audio.
I can finally record my daughter and understand what she is saying. And being at 44khz, sound is great.
I've tried this app about 5 months ago and it wasn't as fluid as it is now. So I'm keeping this version's apk handy. Give it a try since its free. (don't check the enable stereo beta thing...I think it actually records backwards..)
Sent from my HTC Amaze

Damn, I gave it a try. Initially, it'll launch but when I press record it says a failed error message. Then sometimes it freezes when I try to adjust the settings.. Then I force closed it and open it back up and the screen is black. I did a restart with no success.
It might have something to do with me having an htc vivid with the amaze camera apk (via holiraider rom)

Hmm, I don't have that problem... That's weird.

Mine doesn't, although that could be related to carrier and signal variances. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes when my mom calls and either her iPhone 4 or one of us is in certain areas, the sound quality is distorted, in and out, or crackly at times.

Beats Audio = lame

It's a big gimmick. It just an audio preset. It's like hitting the "pop" button on your stereo, seems like we're getting ripped off of a true equalizer just to get a stupid preset I can't even use with my bluetooth headphones. The whole beats brand is stupid. Here's some washed up rappers headphones made by a company known for overpriced overrated hdmi cables. And of course the headphones are like $200 for a set of earphones that look no better than a cheap pair of sonys.
HTCs investment in them just shows their ignorance.

Agreed...beats suck and are overrated (both the audio and the headphones/earbuds...everything beats sucks-and if you like them then you've never truly heard good quality music)
Anyways...I have playerpro for my music...it has an equalizzer in it that I use...not the best but it gets the job done...just wish I could save money for some real headphones (wanna get ath m50s) my bro has a few really nice pairs since he DJs and produces progressive house songs

While I wouldn't buy the headphones, what I suggest for a nice sound is a battery hog on most phones...
Download Equalizer by Smart Android Apps,LLC
Turn on Beats Audio and bucket out the EQ..Rock presets usually do this. Bucket out the middle a tiny bit more to your liking. Raise the high end and bass too..
Put on some dope ass headphones that are over-ear, not ear buds because you wont get the quality.
Without Beats Audio working, even with an EQ it will sound a bit flatter. B/A is an enhancer sorta like WMP used to come with.
I thought Beats Audio was lame and would leave it off, but after using it, it sounds pretty good to me
Final step: turn the volume up to your favorite fast punk tunes. Hip Hop and top-40 wont sound as good. Anything by Lady-Gaga will break your phone and melt your ears.
Cheers!

I just wish my friends would stop treating beats like best thing ever. They look good (the headphones not my friends ) but that's all. I don't see the point of paying $100 for a pair of headphones unless you work with music at a editing level and at that point there are better headphones made professionally for this duty. I find my stock GS3 headphones to be amazing.
HTC incorporating them into their phones is a different story: an equalizer is a good thing and it's a good business move since people ARE that dumb to find an excuse to pay for such products.

I don't work with music...and I have a $200 pair of headphones (did get them on sale for $150)...I just like amazing sound quality...no they are not beats cause as you said beats only look good. I got audio technica ATH-M50s.
If you really enjoy quality music then nice headphones are worth the investment...you'd be surprised all the extra "sounds" you hear with a quality pair of headphones...
Basically you don't need to be working with music in order to have a need for $100+ headphones...just a love for music
If I wasn't so into androids and software development I probably would be a house music producer...my bro is a hobby DJ and a hobby progressive house producer...I tried my hand at making some house songs and I just couldn't find the time to figure those programs out....a lot harder then it looks (coming from a guy that works with android from source...)
BTW...I wouldn't say I'm an audiophile, but I am the kinda guy who won't download or buy any music that's under 320 kbps...even before I got nice headphones I could tell the difference...now that I do...that difference in quality is huge
Didn't really mean to rant lol but I think I've made my point...Headphones are worth the $100+

Are the speakers really that loud?

I keep hearing how these speakers are suppose to be so loud but mine don't really seem to get that loud, not sure if something is wrong with mine or others are just over exaggerating, I was trying to show them off to a buddy at work and played a YouTube video and we could barely hear it, so then I played some songs straight out of the internal memory and it wasn't really to much louder, I got the volume turned all way up and beats audio on, maybe there is some other eq somewhere I don't know about? My old evo 4g was almost just as loud
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app
The one I am sending back were not that loud, but they would fade in and out to really loud to barely being able to hear. Also the crackling.
Mine are really loud with no crackling. The first time I got a notification it was startling how loud they were. Games sound amazing.
Won't be able to say for sure until I get mine Monday, but I went to the sprint store and played with the display today. I think the speakers are a touch over hyped. They are definitely louder than any phone I've had personally...but didn't seem like some people make them out to be.
Again, I'll know for sure Monday..

For phone speakers they are very loud and clear and people are not exaggerating. You're phone may be alright, you may just have unrealistic expectations for what they can do with tiny speakers in a handset.
My Note II is about as loud but doesn't sound anywhere near as good.

Honestly mine are appropriately loud if that makes sense, well except for when turned down to lowest volume they are STILL kind of loud. It's kind of startling how loud it is, I actually jump sometimes from getting a text or email because it's just abruptly loud. It is something to get used to, but it seems you may have to return yours because it does seem there is something wrong.
A good rule of thumb for max volume on the HTC One speakers is that it should "fill the room" with sound. I can play mine max volume in my room at the other end of the house and hear it perfectly fine while in the kitchen.
I bought one of these when I got my One. I'm use to hearing things this loud so I don't expect much from phone speakers. Ring tones and notifications are crazy loud. Music isn't to crazy on my phone. I usually have my goodie bag of stuff, extra charger, external battery, this speaker, ipad, twinkles, you know the usual.

Mines is no sound also, completely stock still.
Oddly enough, mine also didn't have a sound when stock.
Was your phone on silent or vibrate before you rebooted? I swear it disables the start up sound but I could be wrong. It annoyed me so I deleted the sound file anyway.

After having the phone a couple weeks or so now, and letting the epic feeling wear off. I've realized that while the speakers sound pretty good, HTC "boomsound" is a letdown.
My girlfriends s3 is just as loud but doesn't sound as good. Tonight the power went out at work at we gathered in the break room..a bunch of us starting watching YouTube videos. Granted I could barely load any with Sprints crappy network (and most definitely not hq) but when it did play, some dudes crappy LG was drowning my "boomsound" completely out.
The speakers are loud and do have a better sound than a lot of phones, but they are over rated. I like them, but I'm still slightly disappointed
Sent from my HTCONE using xda premium
I also found my speakers weren't incredible loud, the quality was amazing for being on a phone, but if i'm in an environment where people are talking, or outside and it's windy at all i have a hard time hearing the phone, but it is consistent, no fading or crackling or anything

this is the hong kong and taiwanese flagship we will get it
Definitely Taiwan will get it first! Look at One X+, Taiwanese version got 4.2 before all the others.
I really hope they fix the audio crackling at high volumes, perhaps my unit has a defective headphone amplifier, but another user, tsokh, also noticed the same thing =/ Galaxy S4 with Snapdragon 600 had a similar problem, but I contacted HTC the rep told me that nobody else has complained to them about this issue (but then again I contacted HTC North America not Taiwan, a bit of a language barrier and they give you similar replies everytime there).
Also Beats Audio is kinda buggy if you listen to speakers with Beats on, and plug in your headphones the volume increasing effect of Beats is actually reversed and it actually decreases your volume, then turning Beats off actually increases the volume (leading to the audio crackling too). Even worse, after I do this, I start getting an occasional audio ZAP like not crackling but a loud squeak at the same location of a song.

It's only occurs with songs that have a slow deep bass, example would be the slow part of Touch by Daft Punk, some R. Kelly songs. With most songs audio quality is great but I notice a little bit of high-pitched EMI on the left channel at the beginning of each track.
The audio crackling is very apparent with in-ear headphones and earbuds, if you have the volume above 11/15. I find 12/15 to be the ideal listening volume so I do notice it a little bit, but using PowerAMP it SOMETIMES doesn't happen. (but with PowerAMP I get occasional audio popping as opposed to the crackling distortion)
With higher impedance on-ear headphones you only get it at the maximum volume setting (Beats off).
The HTC rep advised me to have it checked with RMA (I might just go to a service center in Taiwan to ask about it the next time I go, it takes about 2 weeks for a factory repair though)
Does anybody use Bluetooth for listening to music? If it doesn't happen on Bluetooth it might be the headphone amplifier.

are you getting the same problem? I thought it made sense because the Butterfly s uses the same chipset as the i9505 GS4 which also had its own share of audio problems. It might only affect a few units as daorderdillon says he doesn't have the same problem with the song in question. It may also be that only 901e are affected as he has 901s.
Strangely I never got this problem on my One X+ but I did get constant skipping which bothered me but mostly only happens if the screen is on and I'm doing something with the phone. Original HOX had a bad DAC and a lot of users disliked the audio quality (never tried myself), HOX+ much cleaner but kinda lacking in bass and treble.
The new update does seem to make the touch screen more responsive. I was having problems with the shift key and the back button, also playing Lep's World 2 where the jump button didn't always respond (perhaps it's because they updated it recently). Finally, there used to be a continuous hiss in the background even after you stop music playback. With IEMs the hiss is still quite noticeable at the beginning and end of songs (including a high-pitched EMI on my left speaker), but it stops soon after you pause the music.

There isn't much difference actually the camera seems the same. Keyboard and buttons seem to be more responsive as I had some problems before under the screen protector.
Also, charging animation means your screen will always be on, I only realized this yesterday and I really hate it - what if your screen burns in? (good thing it's not AMOLED, but still there might be some retention as I get that on my iPad 2) Right now the only solution is to charge under standby mode.

I've notice some crackling sound kinda like static in my ath m50x while listening to music . it has to be the the phone because I've tried the PC and its sounds clean and my nexus 7 sounds good as well. Its only when the track gets loud . don't know if I need a external amp or what . any help would be appreciated

The only time is if I adjust the volume. That's with multiple types of ear buds. A slight crackle. And it does it with all roms I've tried bad boys venom.

No crackling here with my studio quality sennheisers. Using Liquid rom with kernel tweaks for increased mic and headset gains as well. I've tried fiddling with the volume (up down up down up down) while having it maxed out and it sounds perfectly clear. Have also tried skipping forward in the song/skipping songs with volume maxed and couldn't replicate whatever issues you're having...don't know if that's good news or bad to you but there it is^^
I've heard distortion (using my M8) in songs that have been mastered really loud. I don't hear it on my MacBook pro as much. I wonder if the m8 gain structure could be setup better for clearer audience.
One album that I notice it a lot on is Beck's new album, mainly songs in the middle or the record. Ripped mp3 via iTunes at 256

M8 crackling solution
So I rooted my M8 to the GPE and the crackling is gone. Also, now my M8 works 100% better. There are so many things that function and look so much better. Basically I am replying to rant about how awful companies and carriers make android function when they modify the OS. Google may get paid by allowing hardware and carriers to modify their OS, but they are going to lose customers in the end due to this terrible customer experience. Customers who don't buy a nexus or google play edition or can't root their device are out of luck and get an inferior device with a poor usability.
