I am reposting these questions as a new thread, hoping to get some qualified answers from people who are coming from a phone that had the the specs (or close to) the ones in the subject line.
I am an HD2\WM 6.5.3 user with poor vision, hence my interest in the Galaxy Note.
1) Can someone tell me if the icons and the icon text is smaller or larger on the GNote?
2) Same question when browsing the internet and reading mail BEFORE zooming in?
I often have to squint or occasionally use a monocle to view some of the program screens on my HD2 and am hoping that the increased DPI of the GNote is not going to make things smaller over all, despite the larger screen size.
Clearly I am hoping for all things to appear larger!
3) And a little off topic but one of the best things I liked about the HD2\Opera 9.7 browser was auto text wrap\reflow when one does a pinch to zoom. HTC seems to include this functionality in their Sense UI on Android as they did with WM and I do not think the built in browser on the GNote does this???
I tried Dolphin HD on an Andorid SD build on my HD2 but I could not get auto text wrap to work at all, let alone like it does with WM\HTC\Opera.
4) Also, how viewable is the GNote outdoors, in the shade and in the sun?
I would greatly appreciate any\all details and insights anyone can provide before I drop my cash on what I hope to be the answer to my needs.

Text reflow problem in the browser is the only thing that keeping me from getting the SGN ,I also use HD2 WM 6.5 and the Text reflow is amazing on both Opera 9.7 and 10.
However, although I havnt tried it myself but it looks like that the Opera browser supports it,
On both my wifes and sons Samsung galaxy Tabs text reflow is not supported both in stock or Dolphin Hd browsers.
But on my HD2 when I install the MIUI Android SD ROM I notice that i can reflow the text in the browser.

Just going by straight numbers, a 4.3" screen with 800*480 resolution will have a PPI of 217. On a 5.3" screen at 1280*800 resolution, that number jumps to ~285 PPI. (For comparison's sake, Apple's retina display at 3.5" and 960*640 has a PPI of nearly 330.)
In short, the individual pixels on the GNote are going to be smaller than the pixels on a 4.3" 800*480 device. As such, assuming nothing else in the OS has been changed, everything else will appear to be comparatively smaller (but sharper too).
I know there are pixel density apps in the marketplace which allow you to effectively scale up/down Android across the board to emulate the PPI of your preference. Perhaps you may consider trying that out?

Just going by sight (didn't measure), the icons and text on the Note are about the same size as on the sgs by DEFAULT.
But If you root the device then you can change the screen dpi, which well let you make EVERYTHING (all text and graphics, icons etc) smaller or larger to your liking). App LCD Density Changer from the market does this.
Having spent some time with ICS on my HD2, the native browser reflows text very well. I think it would be safe to say that once the Note recieves its ICS update, as Samsung has promised, browsing should be sweet.

I believe text reflow is Application based. Try different browsers until you find one thats satisfactory. I had a HTC Apache, Fuze, and Tilt2. Opera was my browser of choice on the Fuze and Tilt2. I use Miren on my Note and am more than happy. Dolphin browser is another great one.
As others have stated, Dpi changing apps from the market will more than satisfy your desire for having things bigger and more readable. Just be aware that most stock Samsung Apps are not set to auto re-size with different DPI levels. There are many Launcher and dialer alternatives for free from the market that do auto scale.
I say get the phone. You will be more than happy with it.
To add to the list's of devices that wrap text...the HTC flyer would auto wrap text on the entire page when you zoomed in on the stock browser. Loved it most of the time, other times it got annoying.
From my part I thank you all for the heads up,I have already ordered it couple of hours ago,should recieve it by tomorrow,for sure will be needing more assistance for a full customization,Hopefully you will bear up with us.
The stock browser reflows text fine after i ticked the auto fit pages option in settings.

The default browser supports text reflow, it's just NOT ENABLED by default. Please take a look at the browser options.
The same for the FM Radio station name, you have to go into settings and enable it.
I've seen too many posts of people complaining of something that is optional. Just go into settings and explore all the possibilities, many things can be changed.

I never got to manage automatic text reflow on the samsung stock browsers after froyo (checked every option combination I could think of ) but Opera definitely does this on the Note just zoom in and the text of an article you are reading reflows which is a delight.
I agree with you with people quite easily start to complain.

Ok mr. Claude,I just got my G Note, one amazing piece of trchnology,first thing I did is to check up the text reflow in the stock browser which didnt work,however after installing the all too familiar Opera Mobile everything is superb.
I recommend you get it.One nice surprise was that it supported the Armenian language OTB in addition to a couple of more which I read.
By the way I am typing from the GN right now with the Opera without enabling auotocorrection and its super fast.
I wanted to thank the people who have replied about this as it helps me and I am sure, others.
I would still like to hear from users of the GNote as to out-of-box icon\text and default text size when in email app, etc. compared to icon\text size when on a 4.3" screen that has 800x480.
And I am sure I will be buyng this bad boy once we get a clearer indication if AT&T here in the USA w/b coming out with an LTE version of the GNote soon or not. (read that as not soon enough but I am willing to wait till Q1 of 2012 if AT&T does end up selling the LTE version).

Ok here wr go,in the email application the headers on the HD2 can be pinched to zoom while on the GNote cannont,meanwhile on the GNote Hotmail the pinch to zoom works very well together with the text reflow,I was able to zoom in the email massage till there was just one word on each line!!.But the Gmail doesnt seem to support zoom nor did I find a way to enlarge the fonts,but than again my main email is the hotmail.
Regarding the Icons they are smaller than the HD2 but the text is a bit larger.
However there is one thing that the GNote excells in is the Keyboard,the HD2 Keyboard is a complete crap,thats why I preffered the Swype.
My advice,if it is just for reading webpages and email HD2 is not much worst than the GNote,but for everthing else it is completly different experience.
Dang your still using WinMo?! There are many Android ROMS for HD2 that have text reflow working. Anyway I just got my Note a couple days ago and I was an HD2 user myself for over a year. Great phone. I was also worried the higher res on the Note would make everything look smaller. But in fact it looks pretty close to the same. Higher res + bigger screen = about same appearance for text. Everything else though is MUCH better. AND you get more text on the screen. Obviously. Would I recommend it to you, someone VERY concerned about reading text? Not sure. AMOLED does provide better contrast. You would basically be getting a device that would show you more text not necessarily larger.
I will say this. I'm an ergonomic freak. I loved the HD2's design. Perfect fit in hand, good amount of rubberization on edges, quality materials and REAL buttons and a FRONT power button. I can't stand devices that put the power button WAY up top. Especially as these phones get larger it gets really clumsy to reach for that button every time. When/if ATT does get the Note you can be assured they will remove the front home physical button. Actually there is a pic of it without the button. http://pocketnow.com/android/samsung-preparing-galaxy-note-hardware-for-us-release-image . The power button on the Note is VERY high up on the right hand side. VERY hard to reach on a large device when trying to hold with one hand(which is possible). So without being able to wake the device with the front physical home button this is the only option. I personally wouldn't want anything to do with the ATT version and am glad I purchased the international version for this reason alone.

I have been testing for the last 48 hours the lovely Iris browser on my Touch HD and I must say this is the best browsing experience I have ever seen for Windows Mobile.
Those who know me know I am extremely anti-Apple but I must say that internet experience on the damned iPhone is fabulous.
Well, Iris is almost there. It features the same rendering engine used in the Safari for the iPhone. You can tell that as soon as you start using it.
The page renders so clearly and it follows your finger so easily that the only thing really missing is the multitouch feature (did anyone say anything about the HD having the hardware for that already?)
I think we all must support it and leave Opera as a second option for now. All these browsers out there seem to be still quite experimental, we'd better stick to the one which - while working - gives us the best possible experience. I vote for Iris.
Chefs: The software is free for non commercial use, please let's embed it to your cooked roms.
Everyone else: Let's give it a go, download the CAB and install and see what I'm talking about.

well it's a beta 3, need more work to make it good, but it's a good start.
I hope for now cooker don't use it as defaut, opera is far from this browser in term of functionality.

performance doesn't suck. it's the best i've seen so far.
i think youre being a bit exaggerated when saying about the delay and nearly unusable. i didn't want to mention opera's flaws but the navigation in it is far from being good and the crashing problem is the worst thing since the invention of Internet Explorer.
the reason i went after another browser was that i was sick of resetting my phone when trying to use opera.
the text on zoom won't fit the screen perfectly on opera either. it's very likely to overflow or just appear misplaced as if opera had missed the target when zooming in.
the difference in this point is that iris has got such clearer picture that it's much easier to read even very tiny letters also it moves smoothly with your finger unlike opera all crispy as if it was made on java for an old 256 colour screen Ericsson phone.
i just love the effects: when you open a page on a new tab, it falls like a gate and bumps. when you click on a link (to open a link you have to click on it for a second - this should be faster) it moves like you just punched it and it's so cool the fading effect between pages... just a few nice things.
all good and well, but is there flash support????
ie6 now has flash support, but the browser itself is crappy as hell!!!!! And opera keeps refusing to support flash...... sigh.....

Well, I use opera on dutty's rom, which is the most advanced version of opera
never crash, speed excellent, highly smooth and fast
zoom excellent, can read anything quickly without any prob
I have just test 2 site, and this too one, take a lot of time on this. Perhaps I need extra conf
I will test it more to see
effect is nice of course, but it's best to keep "better" reading experience without scrolling, it's more functional
so, it's just my filling, I will test it more

I like it... it has alot of potential even though its in beta it is showing alot of promise.
It is nice, reasonably fluid and renders pretty well... although I must say rendering engine does need some tweaking feels a little rocky still.
Transition from page to page is cool as it fades but again FPS seems a little laggy.
the second view when navigating with finger takes a little while to show the page as mini view it seems to load slowly on some some complex pages which shoudn'y really be the case as all it needs to do is load a snapshot of the actual page.
Dont get me wrong this is constructive feedback - I like it alot.
Some small UI tweaks, speed improvements, fix the secondary navigation snapshot so its instant rather loading like googlemaps then add Flash support and i think it could well be a contender (even winner) against Opera etc.

totally agree!
i think the more users it has now the best it will be in the future and this forum is a great place to start cause everyone here seems to help a lot when it comes to tweaking apps, making them more popular. I really think Iris is the one, not just yet, but it's got what it takes, just need a little bit of improvement.
anyway, i found it better do disable the page overview thing. have used that on netfront before and found it to make the browsing experience a bit confusing. wouldn't know where to look at to find what i was after...
have you seen how it displays your bookmarks? it is in a cover flow style. not with the full cover flow experience but still easier to find what you looking for than just a list of sites.
Seems like a nice competition for ie6 but for me I like opera far better than this one, I know this is beta, but this had nothing to show for me.
It failed to draw few sites properly that I tried, used desktop mode and I setup it like it should be. First thing I dislike is that it puts itself into Startmenu without notice, second is that it is like IE6 or skyfire so that you have to press few places to write address into a small area, third is that it loaded page very slowly when compared to opera.
Loads stuff in wrong order or something, pictures before css and html.
Might be better later when more work has been done for it.
Kinda like skyfire this was, good but nothing special to show.
edit: one good thing though, mouse cursor. Seen it before so not new.

i noticed that when rendering png files too.
that's exact my point when it comes to iris, these guys managed to put on the first version some things opera took nine versions to never get. yes, iris is not flawless but it is very, very promising. by the final version it will be damn good.

the reason i avoid talking about skyfire is cause it's a browser which relies on their service to exist. if, in a very unlikely circumstance that they shut down you'll have a piece of completely useless software on your PDA. not mentioning it's not an original idea, microsoft tried that before with the now buried DeepFish (R.I.P.)

LOL man, Opera does exactly the same. Both Opera and Skyfire pre-render websites through their proxies, the difference being that Opera is text-based and Skyfire is image-based.
That's why Opera loads slower and scrolls quickes (loads the whole text part of the website at once), while Skyfire loads quicker and scrolls slower (loads only the visible part as compressed image, google maps style).
Skyfire totally rocks because:
- is has full embedded video support out of the box
- desktop-like compatibility (online banking etc.)
- saves your bookmarks under your account so you never lose them
- file download
- feeds support
- customisable home page
They just released the latest beta 0.9.
HTC Touch HD unfortunately wont be able to enable Multitouch. It uses pressure to locate the point where you push. The iPhone or the Samsung F480 uses CMOS Sensors under the display and those work with the change in Resistance when you put your finger on the Screen! Thats why an iPhone doesnt work with a stylus! It works only with parts of a human body or anything that changes Resistance when made contact on the screen.
The Touchpad of a Laptop works with the same technology used in the iPhone!

That's true for opera mini, but false for opera mobile. Look at http://www.whatismyip.com and you'll see from what proxy you connect to internet.

Close, the iPhone and touchpads measure capacitance, and in fact it is the Touch HD that works with resistance.
Hmm, I guess this is my first post. And I'm not even sure if it's the right forum for it, though considering the issue comes from the huge screen resolution from the TD2, it may be the correct forum.
Anyway, I love my TD2. It's my first smartphone and even though it cost me €405, I don't regret buying it.
I'm using it a lot for my studies though, and I like using the wikipedia/wapedia.mobi. Thing is that Opera apparently doesn't manage very well image size when he resize the page with the mobile view; I'm getting images bigger than what they should be and much more pixelised; therefore when I browse mathematics related pages, I have to scroll horizontally to view the whole formula... which isn't really practical. The same happens with IE, plus the browser being unpractical.
Anyway, would you know any way to reduce for example all images in a page by 25 or 50% in a mobile browser (if you know one that can do it, it would be great)?
It would be too bothersome to download the pages on my computer and manually resize images and correct the html tags

This has been irretating me too. Also, I think that the font size often i way too big even when I zoom out as much as possible. But I guess there is no easy fix for this.
I've been checking the opera configuration file, though I'm not sure if the "scale" or "skin scale" or even the "Image.css" work :/ I've tried various settings...

I have no idea what you mean by this. Could you give me a URL to see on my phone what you are talking about. Opera for my has sized all pages like they do on my laptop. No pictures have been pixelized ever except when I zoom in all the way.
i like Opera but on a WVGA screen give Iris a shot- it's a simple browser and it's good for sizing. torchmobile.com free- and it uses the iphones webkit engine so everything has that iPhoney feel

Me neither. Could it be that the websites mentioned have mobile-specific CSS styles that would cause the pixellation you mention?
i am fairly new here but i have come to find this place to be the most helpful place on the net to get my HD2 running far better than the stock. I have come to have only one suggestion that i think could possibility make this place just a bit easier to navigate for us mobile internet users.... i have quite a bit of hassle trying to select the page numbers using my big fat fingers on this screen! now with opera 10 and its non finger zooming capabilities it is even worse. is any way that the font could be increased i would really appreciate it. or maybe just a big "next page" button at the end!

Opera Mobile 10 is absolutely terrible at detecting "clicks" on links. On average a text link will need to be tapped at least 10 times before it registers. Often the link will change color like it is being clicked but nothing happens. I'd suggest using the stylus but that is not an option on the HD2.
It really is pathetic how bad it is, especially considering Opera Mobile 9 and Opera Mini 5 detect link presses adequately. Still they pale in comparison to the Android default browser, which can accurately detect presses on tiny text links even on a fully zoomed out page.
She never hugs me. I don't know why. She used to, until she found out that i was keeping count ith my friends of how many hugs I could get a day. Then she stopped.
My main idea was to buy an HD2.. My father travelled (HTC almost dont exists in my country) and I asked him to buy me the HD2. He came with the Hd7 and I was really surprised (There were no more HD2, and it was just 30 dolars less than the 7). I liked it a lot,but in the moment I tried to download an app from the market or pass music via zune, I hated wp7!
Its not that the OS is bad, is just new. I think that the phone is good too, but I dont really like the softkeys, cuz they are really easy to touch and everyone who picks the phone, enters at least 3 times to Bing search. Almost I do sometimes..
I just dont know if my fathers decition was ok, but one day i think I should sell it and buy me the HD2, or even an DesireHD, but others days i love my phone.. IDK what to think right now.. What do you think?
I've had an HD2 for awhile and even though I never unlocked, jail broken, or used any ROM's to use different operating systems (android, winmo7, etc) I do find that HD7 is overall an improvement. Mostly too cause is has a lot of room to grow. HD2 was awesome but it had limits. No flash support and with adobe not working on any for winmo 6.5 (even though I was told it was by the retailer -.-), I had to get WP7 phone. The only downside I have found with the HD7 so far (well downsides that matter the most) are few and far.
1. No Micro SD slot... well not one that's easily accessible. I usually don't tamper with the phone, but I have seen and looked into tutorials on expanding to a 32g card and the hardest thing about it is... buying the SD Card. Those things are fricken' expensive!!
2. Limited customization. The interface doesn't let you customize it as much as its predecessor the "HD2". Like having your own wallpaper (other then the lock screen), but I find the interface it does have very appealing anyway. Simple, classy, easy to use, and very fluent in switching between the screens.
3. Settings. The settings are very limited. Not much you can change, but I do plan on seeing a lot of updates.
4. Loading Apps and Music. Even through Zune is a wonderful program, I hated being dependent on a third party program to load on my music, pics, apps, and what not. I detested iTunes!! I soon realized though, once you understand how it works, it is a lot more organizable.
Not all the bad stuff is out, this is what I love about the HD7 compared to HD2.
1. No more front keys. Hate keys. Just another crevice for junk to get into or part to get broken, or space for a liquid to leak into.
2. Windows Phone 7 OS. To be able to properly use this without having to ROM it is a big thing for people who can't afford to brick their phone. Though the HD2 has ways to implement other OS's, people like me rather just stick with whats installed for safety.
3. The kickstand. Duhh!! Got tired of using the space between the numbers and function keys to watch a movie. Plus is kinda works like protection for the camera too.
4. Dedicated Camera Key. The tap screen to take a picture made taking a picture a chore for me, because I would shake the picture right as i was taking it.
5. Improve App Store. Being able to install, download, and buy apps without having to be on the phone to do it saves me a lot of time. My land line will always be faster then my data line on my phone.
6. Up To Date Info. Last but not least is the start page. On one simple face you can see all your updates from Facebook, email, messages, apps updates, and probably more. The Facebook app for HD2 was a mess, and the email and messaging updates were boring and to simple. HD7 hyped it big time. I love it.
This is all my opinion, but it is new and expect a lot to happen. Especially once Adobe releases flash support.

2. Limited customization. The interface doesn't let you customize it as much as its predecessor the "HD2". Like having your own wallpaper (other then the lock screen), but I find the interface it does have very appealing anyway. Simple, classy, easy to use, and very fluent in switching between the screens.
3. Settings. The settings are very limited. Not much you can change, but I do plan on seeing a lot of updates.
4. Loading Apps and Music. Even through Zune is a wonderful program, I hated being dependent on a third party program to load on my music, pics, apps, and what not. I detested iTunes!! I soon realized though, once you understand how it works, it is a lot more organizable.
Not all the bad stuff is out, this is what I love about the HD7 compared to HD2.
1. No more front keys. Hate keys. Just another crevice for junk to get into or part to get broken, or space for a liquid to leak into.
2. Windows Phone 7 OS. To be able to properly use this without having to ROM it is a big thing for people who can't afford to brick their phone. Though the HD2 has ways to implement other OS's, people like me rather just stick with whats installed for safety.
3. The kickstand. Duhh!! Got tired of using the space between the numbers and function keys to watch a movie. Plus is kinda works like protection for the camera too.
4. Dedicated Camera Key. The tap screen to take a picture made taking a picture a chore for me, because I would shake the picture right as i was taking it.
5. Improve App Store. Being able to install, download, and buy apps without having to be on the phone to do it saves me a lot of time. My land line will always be faster then my data line on my phone.
6. Up To Date Info. Last but not least is the start page. On one simple face you can see all your updates from Facebook, email, messages, apps updates, and probably more. The Facebook app for HD2 was a mess, and the email and messaging updates were boring and to simple. HD7 hyped it big time. I love it.
This is all my opinion, but it is new and expect a lot to happen. Especially once Adobe releases flash support.

well, in my opinion I do like the hardkeys on the HD2 (at least the appearence because I never had an HD2 in my hands), because is just too easy to confuse and press one softkey..
The camera button it's a good idea, but i would suggest an on-screen shutter, because no one knows how to take pictures or they just dont let a time on the first stop for focus...
I think in WinMo you are able to change a lot of settings, in WP7 we cant even calibrate the screen.. But well, today was a happy day.. And i should say I love the atention of having a phone that maybe we have only 10 in the country, not just for the Huge screen, also the solidity, camera and the sprakers/microphone at the sides of the screen..
The HD7 has its touch keys (back/Home/Search) little bit too close to the screen. It makes user too easy to touch those keys by mistake. I know because i do touch those keys a lot by mistake , mostly when playing Fruit Ninja.
the soft keys ( power button/ volume buttons/ camera button) lacks the "click"-feeling, make it kinda hare to press it everytime . HD7 also lacks in serving time with its limited-battery (1230mAh), HTC put the eye-candy above the build quality in their chart for HD7.
about the OS, i have no question about it because WP7 serve me well on daily processes and it is still in develop

The softkeys seems to be part of the screen.. I tried pinch to zoom at pictures touching the screen and (with the second finger) touching the softkeys.. Thats why the keys should be near the screen...
What are the main uses, for your s-pen please.?
Opposed to alot of people here I barely use it.
It's too small to hold in a comfortable way for me, even though I don't have big hands or anything.
Also it starts turning around and slipping away so it's hard to find the button sometimes.
It might just be me being clumsy though..
I've tried it a couple of times, mostly for Swype when typing, making screenshots, drawing (S-Memo) and editting pictures.
i tried to use s-pen to take notes in meetings but it didnt work well. now i actually dont use s-pen. do some photo editing for just using s-pen thats all
Mine works as a...part of back cover. I dont really use it - sometimes for run, and sometimes to mark something on a picture.
I use it for taking notes and annotations on pdf files..really great...i dont have problems with it at all. I also use it along with graffiti pro as an input method. Kind of reminds me of the good old days of my palm device.

You can use it to write sms or emails - no problems there. You can either use it to tap keyboard keys, or use handwriting recognition which works really well. Also it's great for some games, editing photos etc.
I've only had my Note for a week, so my experience is only based on that...
I use the S Pen a lot more than I thought I would.
I use it for taking notes in FreeNote. I use the Handwriting (Freehand) mode as I find that suits me best. It took me a few days to decide which mode I liked best.
I don't use it for any text input - I find the handwriting recognition too hit and miss for it to be efficient, so I use Swype for all of my text input. I have been using Swype for almost 2 years on my Galaxy S, so maybe just a creature of habit...
I do often use the stylus for Swype if I happen to have it in my hand. It is a bit quicker and more accurate than using my finger, but only a little - the Swype keys are so big on the Note screen anyway
If I was going to use the SPen for handwriting to text conversion, then I would probably buy WritePad. You choose it as your input method instead of the Samsung keyboard. I tried it out when I was deciding what note taking app to use, and the recognition smarts in that were way better than the Samsung keyboard.
I also use the S Pen for some apps that require finer levels of precision than I can easily get with my finger.
I use some music and audio apps where I want to select regions of a wav file, or a timeline, and it is a lot easier and more accurate with the SPen.
And I use it to play Draw Something

I use it mainly for notes and emails and so.e sms. Just depends where I am at the time. If Im at my desk I find it quite nice to pull out a pen and write away......

The S-Pen is designed for right-handed people and thus if I draw the characters from right-to-left as us southpaws usually do it fails to recognize them. If I draw them from left-to-right it does recognize them, but then my writing speed drops like a dead fly. As such it is useless for writing anything :/

Go into Settings>Pen Settings
Change it from right handed to left handed.
Or is that just for the screen calibration rather than handwriting recognition?
I use my s pen every day man!

That doesn't change how the handwriting API handles the pen, it only changes the offset. As such it doesn't make the thing any better. I did send mail to Samsung about it, doesn't look like it they care.
Agree. I am also left handed. So I use it to scratch my ear.
I don't really use mine at all except on occasions when I am bored. Although it has sometimes helped with picking a particular narrow cell in a spreadsheet. I used to like Windows Tablet PCs their handwriting recognition was very good. If the note supported real time recognition I might use it more. But ultimately it's all about the screen size for me with the note.
I've found it makes crossword and sudoku puzzles more like the real newspaper versions! I take a screenshot of the puzzle grid from the relevant website, open it in photo editor and draw the letters/numbers directly onto the blanks.

Its great for drawing with Smemo. I doodle alot and dont have to pull out a tablet or paper and pencil.
