Nook color locked bootloader? - Nook Color General

does the nook colors made now have a locked bootloader? or was it just the nook tablets that have that locked bootloader.
Im kind of confused cause I think i read that Older nook colors are not locked, but the newer nook colors have a locked bootloader

This would be the first time i have heard about this... I am going to say it is only the tablet; the lock is partly the hardware, wjich i dont believe has changed in the nook color..

thanks dude, im sure some people are confusing stuff about the nook "color" tablet having a locked bootloader. so yeah, definitely. thanks for the heads up, I thought the nook colors didnt have the bootloader lock on it.

You can't exactly lock a boot loader with an OTA update. Only the Nook Tablet has a locked bootloader.

Since the NC does not have a locked bootloader perhaps someone can close this thread?

No problem. A bootloader is the very first bit of code that is executed when you turn the device one, aka. if you press the power switch.
It's a static piece of code, which usually resides on a ROM chip whose sole purpose is to execute the next stage bootloader, usually on a EEPROM / Flash which in turn boots the operating system itself...
When we talk about a locked bootloader it means that this piece of static, unchangeable code, executes a check on the next-stage bootloader for validicity, usually a checksum or signature, before executing it...
Which means, that selfmade unsigned next-stage bootloader code like ours will not boot, because it doesn't pass the checks on the static first stage bootloader.
I hope this made sense...

Is it possible that the upcomming 1.4 update could put the same NT bootloader in to the NC that prevents custom rom usage?

Nope. The 1st Stage Bootloader usually is on a ROM chip, means it can't get erased / rewritten.
The only way to add a new 1st Stage Bootloader would be by replacing that ROM chip, which requires a hardware change.

Sort of, but no. The OMAP has a hardware pin which determines boot priority. The bootloader, recovery, etc, are all on the flash. MLO, uImage, etc.

I understood the question more as whether NEW Nook Color units would be locked. My two older units are safe, but if I order a NEW unit, might it be locked down?
(As a guy who nearly got burned putting alternate firmware on the Linksys WRT-54 routers, I think this is a valid concern. Nothing keeps a manufacturer from changing the innards of a product as they see fit, even if the outward appearance and description stays the same.)

Not likely. They probably are not manufacturing more Nook Colors, (don't know this for a fact), and you can bet they're not gonna crack open the existing ones and replace the boards. What is being sold now is most likely a very large back stock.

I suspect they will continue to manufacture Nook Colors as long as there is a demand. It is costing them less to manufacture now which is one reason for the price decrease. And with the 1.4 update they are a very viable contender to the Kindle Fire.

If it's root only...?

If we can only get this thing rooted and not fully unlocked, then will we still be able to have wireless tethering and overclocking, because I know in order to do that you need a modiffied kernel, Right? The only way to flash a new kernel is the same way you would flash a custom rom. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!
You can still get wireless tethering if you only root yes.

I'm pretty sure you can overclock with just root. The Milestone can be overclocked, and that only has root.
thats good, so to me the only major reason why we would want to be able to flash different roms is so we can get the latest version of Androis ASAP! Otherwise once 2.2 hits the DX we only need root to do the other awsome things! I only care for Overclocking, wireless tethering, titanium backup, and deleting system apps, and a few other random apps requiring root!
What about modifying themes heavily?
Having using a Blackberry in the past, one of the best things about it was the fact that the main theme could be heavily modified, (and often very easily via quick downloads) to show such things as upcoming calendar events, missed calls, and the intros of recent texts and emails; all on one screen at the same time, as well as weather and time. I don't really need apps on my main screen as much as a proper log of what I've missed, is coming up, etc..
The "Today" theme, in its many variations is a common example.
Is this something that's possible just by being rooted? Is this possible without even being rooted? Do any Android phones that are fully hacked open even have the possibility to re-arrange their home screen in a such a way?
I've seen that a calendar and weather/time can be easily done, but I'm looking for something kind of like this (it would show newly unchecked emails and texts if there are any, and rolling over the calendar reveals upcoming events):
img202.imageshack.us/img202/6293/bbscreenshot3.jpg
Here's a similar type I also used, that is less minimalistic:
hulkster1970.com/theme/9000/v2/v2_13.jpg
Of course these I used on a much small BB Bold 9000 screen, so I can't imagine what the Droid X could do, if these types of modifications are possible?
Root enough for that? Fully unlocked enough? Just not possible, and I expect too much?
Thanks,
--bb
If that is the interface that your interested in, you should check out the home replacement Slidescreen, it has that kind of layout.
wireless tethering is the only thing I care for NOW.

Thanks very much, Irishpride!
/That requires no rooting, or full boot access then? That's exactly what I'm looking for.
can a phone with root only access be flashed to other carriers such as cricket or would you need access to the bootloader?
By the way guys, P3 and Birdman are saying that this might take a very long time to get rooted if not never.

That is pretty cool. Kind of reminds me of my WinMo 6.5 home screen to be honest.
I thought the same thing.
@titanfan, My understanding is that rooting will not be especially difficult or easy, rather flashing custom ROMs will be nearly impossible due to the encrypted bootloader. In other words, the X will be in.the same boat as the Milestone since they share the same bootloader. Please correct if I am wrong

Don't need root for BT tethering
BT thethering is already working out of the box with Windows 7 and Linux.
There is another thread in general I think where I've given some instructions. Don't need to pay for tethering.

[Q] Could it be? A full Milestone Root??

http://software2tech.com/tag/how-to-root-motorola-milestone-xt701/
It's called Easy Root. It supposedly uses some new BlueTooth Exploit.
Apparently this is a full milestone root that allows overclocking tethering and stuff, I will get back when I try it and confirm it works.
In the mean time, has anyone tried it?
I think it will work. I used universal androot and everything worked fine with it.
I use it, it works fine.
i dont see whats so hard about swapping .sbf files and dropping an update...
are people really too lazy to get things done anymore?
..everyone seems to just want an "easy button"
Personally I don't think things should be too easy...sometimes people do things without fully understanding what they're doing, then show up for warranty service/tech support and are kicked out of the room

This has nothing to do with the simplicity, and everyone to do with Donny's OS. He's exclusively a Mac user, which means there's suddenly a lot of things that are so hard about swapping .sbf files, seeing as Motorola decides that the third largest computer producer in North America doesn't need RSD Lite. He's looking for a one-click root on recommendation from another thread in this forum.
You should consider all possibilities before judging someone for their methods.

Is this supposed to be a full root? as in the milestone kernel?
Regards, PK
I have no idea what you mean by "as in the milestone kernel" as I'm sure you know, we cannot touch the Kernel.
As by full root, I believe this is "Level 1" root (?) - though I maybe corrected on this.
Sounds like you know exactly what I am talking about. Yes I was talking about what you refer to as "level 1" root. Long-shot & wishful thinking but a fair question don't you think? "Root" on every other phone I have means just that.
Overwhelming yes, but "never"? Know how many times the frigging pentagon gets compromised everyday? This is a frigging cell phone, nasty encryption yes but there's more than one way to skin a cat...who knows.
Anyway the points moot, if the chattering class is on target the milestone "kernal" is already out there being fiddled with...supposedly on it's way.

Very true , sadly there was no big interest from dev/ hackers to succeed at doing this , now this phone is already considered an old phone ( 11 months old) so chances are 'cat' will be out of the bag and nobody will care anymore ..
I like the device enough to consider the XT720 if the fastboot trick would allow us to boot custom kernel ... sadly I will probably be on the hunt for another TRUE DEV phone this time .

..i boot from fully off, to fully loaded in about 9 to 12 seconds... restart only takes about 34 seconds to complete the cycle. Not sure why everyone is flipping-shiz about this fast-boot thing. Just look around and try some roms and edit them up some.
The TelusLite v5 rom boots around 15 seconds by default. You can lower it by adding in mem-hack and overclocking it.

I can't really answer that, as I've never used a Kindle Fire. I did consider both before purchasing, but the Fire lost my interest when I found out it had no microSD slot. Additionally, I *really* love my rooted NC, and the NT just adds more speedy goodness to a platform I already love.
To all that asked about SD card booting - I tried the CWM sd from my NC and the tablet completely ignored it. As it has been pointed out that CWM is built for each device, this result is unsurprising.
NOTE: despite having 16gb of on-board storage, stock ROM only allows you access to 1gb. While this will, without question, change once rooted and ROM'd, it is somewhat disappointing.
Just an update: installing other launchers and sideloading/usb debugging achieved. No luck yet with Gingerbreak or Super One-click.
So far, according to this thread from the NT forum, the Tablet appears to require a signed bootloader

Official SDE gen 9 From Archos

For ARCHOS Generation 9 devices only:
Important notices to be acknowledged before downloading and installing the SDE firmware:
Once the SDE firmware is installed on a device, this device will be watermarked and ARCHOS will be able to detect that this firmware has been installed once.
After SDE firmware installation, you will not be able to play DRM protected content anymore.
Installing the SDE firmware is considered by ARCHOS as a voiding of the warranty and ARCHOS declines all liability and responsibility for any issues resulting from the installation of this SDE firmware.
ARCHOS strongly advises that only experts in embedded software development should install this firmware.
This firmware is provided "as is" and is not supported by ARCHOS.
The firmware must be installed on a unit with a firmware version above 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Once the SDE firmware is installed, powering on the device while pressing the 'volume down' button will now trigger a "Boot Menu". This menu allows to select which operating system is to be launched (Android, the newly installed Developer Edition or the Recovery System). If the device is powered on while pressing jointly the 'volume down' and the 'volume up' buttons, the Developer Edition will be launched. If the device is powered on without any other button pressed, Android will be launched.
Installing a new ARCHOS (Android) firmware WILL NOT remove the SDE firmware. In order to uninstall the SDE, boot into the recovery using the Boot Menu, select "Developer Edition Menu", then "Uninstall Developer Edition".

Well, a nice trick to make the most nasty and unpatient users to void their warranty, ha-ha!
And what about potential hardware problems (like broken usb/charge port)? Installing SDE voids warranty for such problems also?

From what I understand, it only voids the warrany for damage incurred via software. Hardware problems should still be covered.

What "official" firmware do you have now? *IF* it is 4.0.7 then just stay with it for now!
4.0.24 and 4.0.25 are pure garbage! Memory management did not work at all in those versions.
Although the memory management was (at least partially) fixed in 4.0.26, there are still way too many other problems with "MediaCenter" and "file indexing".
In other words, until (and that's starting to turn into a big "if") Archos releases newer firmware... stay away from any 4.0.2x versions as long as you can. If you have a functioning 3.2.80 or 4.0.7 then STAY with that. At this point (as of December 29, 2012) any others are a complete waste of time to mess around with!!!

I believe they mean that you would no longer be able to play any purchased music or videos that you try to "sync" from your computer to the tablet. Such things as purchased music or videos that can only be played on your computer with Microsoft's MediaPlayer or other such software.
It's very similar to how many MP3 players worked with DRM protected files. If the file is only supposed to play on that specific computer and/or a few specific device that it can be "synced" or copied to then it will no longer be able to be played on an Archos after installing their "official" SDE.
Don't know why anyone would ever have wanted to install the "official" Archos SDE anyway unless they wanted to "develop" new Android software. That's what it was really meant for.
As far as warranty... Supposedly Archos will handle anything that is an actual hardware flaw even after (being "watermarked" from) installing their SDE, but they will NOT cover any software problems (or created by software).
For example, if you install software that cranks up the volume that then burns out the speaker... well, that's YOUR fault, not theirs!
I would have to also assume that if you installed any "rooted" firmware, and then started messing around using "root" to delete or alter any official files the device normally needs, and end up bricking your tablet... that will also be YOUR fault not theirs!
In all honesty, there simply is NO REALLY GOOD REASON to ever "root" a device unless you honestly do not want what the manufacturer intended the device to work with. Logically, from their viewpoint, if you did NOT WANT what they were selling you then why did you buy it to start with? Do you people honestly think that if you bought a Chevy and then changed the engine by putting one in made by Ford that somehow the Chevy dealer should still then fix it for you? That's just plan STUPID!!!

Now, if you have fastboot OEM unlock,
,
Then perhaps you can pull your boot.img, separate zImage from Ramdisk, modify ro.secure=0, add RW comments, repack your boot.img, fastboot flash boot boot.img, then install BB and SU.
Just a thought.

Sad part the "Fastboot OEM unlock" won't work cause Asus has theirs encrypted. You have to use their unlocking tool to unlock your bootloader. Given fact it can work, been trying it for 2 days now and stupid app won't unlock my bootloader. Read my S/N may not be registered in their database so emailed them complaining about another service that doesn't work.

They'll get around to it. Heck, when I had to turn in my A701 to service center, they didn't even know it had been released Tried telling me it was a "leaked and illegal" tablet.
Good luck with the bootloader mate, but root after that should be pretty straight forward. (fingers crossed)
I think that unlocking bootloader is bad idea. After that the warranty will be void...

Yeah well tried to call them and got the usual "just send it back" well not waiting 2-3 weeks just get to get it back. Since there is something wrong with the charge port anyways just gonna send it back to amazon to have new one in couple days. Gotta love the return policy.

Um thats just lame excuse from companies to force us to keep their crap on the devices we purchase. All my devices are rooted and unlocked and not one has died yet. After going through and disabling 2/3rds of crap on this tablet now I want that few hundred megabytes back in space. For as much crap I disabled I wouldn't be surprised im more close to 1gb back.

What a morons sometimes. Strange because I had the issue with the connection between dock and tablet where the connection between the 2 for a split moment was gone when adjusting the tilt angle, I got an immediate replacement. This problem I guarantee you we will see more often showing up here.
And what the rooting concerns: when the TWRP devs have their version for the 701 finished, it will be not that hard anymore. Just takes some time before that is done.
And for the flaming thing sorry, but I don't like to get hit by childish behavior when just reporting and next to that by a guy that is probably half my age and just comes looking in here (look @ date I joined xda lol)
Thanks for removing that post.

Hate returns. Took 3 months to get a refund. (welcome to Russia). Honestly, it was all due to rush jobs on CWM for the 510 and 700's. Bozos were in a rush to be the first, and used the "fstab's" from the wrong device. Bricked several tabs before I put a stop to it. Basically ruined the emmc memory. Mainboard replacements.
Well, I know folks are itchy to get things going. What starts as a joke, turns into flaming.
You folks always remember, takes 2 people for an argument. You all have the "Report Post" button on the toolbar. Please use it.
Honestly, I expect you folks to help each other out. Makes for a better forum.
Carry On!

well next time you may want to think twice before asuming someone younger than you. guess i am to young to know where the movie that reference came from. i already have the boot.img altered and ready to try. also dont ask for it, havent tested it yet so going to have to wait till amazon gives me new one. it really isnt hard to alter, moscow already gave instructions.
Update Amazon has shipped my new tablet so may be here tomorrow (i hope) if my new boot.img works and gives me root then I will pass it on, sadly though it won't be in a format in which you can just use a custom recovery, you have to flash it manually but if it works I will post how to flash it (all i need to remember is which tools to zip up in the entire SDK) LOL.
Interesting discussion..

It is VERY lame. I sold my TF700 because of the slow I/O causing lag that I couldn't live with. Of course I had the bootloader unlocked, so the warranty was void. I divulged that info in the eBay auction for the most part (I didn't say the warranty was void because I didn't know that was the case. Ignorant, I know). Anyway, the new owner of my TF700 emailed me after a couple months asking me why ASUS was charging them $280 for fixing the faulty touchscreen. They said ASUS says it's not under warranty because of the unlocked bootloader. I felt bad for the new owners, having to fork out the money. They're $800 into the TF700 w/dock at this point.
So I would say: Think twice before unlocking the bootloader on the TF701, when custom-recovery even comes out for it.
Personally, with my TF701 that I ordered on newgg today, I am going to leave the bootloader locked for awhile. I can live with the stock ROM, hopefully with root access. Maybe after a few months I'll unlock the bootloader. It would be nice to do it in a way that didn't void the warranty. What an asinine policy by ASUS. There is no way the unlocked bootloader led to the touchscreen failing on my old TF700....no way!

Gee thanks for the advice. Lets just say for practicality so you know when I got my Xoom 2 days later I rooted it. Couple years later works fine just slow now so time for new one. I have 701 right now and its blazing fast.
2nd let me shine some advise for you. For starters you can't "root" a device with a locked bootloader. Requires altering the boot.img to tell system to boot up differently and allow you access to the "restricted" file system. To access the flash portion of that requires you to open it up. One way or another you will have to unlock the bootloader to root the device. I myself just want root, I want to just remove the unwanted junk and free up that wasted space and install ad blocking software.
What each person chooses to do with the root is up to them, regardless if Asus wants to void the warranty or not. Just need little common sense and know how to use google to figure what you want to do. If your to cautious to do that then I highly suggest not touching it and leave it as is. To me its never a "think twice" once you root and have full access to the product you bought, it makes the device so much better to use and gets rid of unwanted bloatware. Especially the ad blocking apps which helps on phone contracts with capped data helps keep your data way down since ads use a lot of data.

Your statements sound completely wrong to me. Of course you can root without unlocking the bootloader. I have rooted two phones and my TF201, all without unlocking; I rooted the TF201 soon after buying it, and only unlocked the bootloader more than a year later.
Rooting doesn't force you to forfeit warranty service, but unlocking does. (Note that you can unroot a device before sending it in for service, but you can't "relock" an unlocked device.) So it makes perfect sense as Snake suggests to hold off on unlocking, at least until you are sure all the hardware in your device is working perfectly.

You can use a windows app called Virtuous Ten Studio (created by Diamondback ) Senior Mod and RD. It'll unpack your boot.img to allow editing ramdisk. Heck, it'll also de-odex, decompile apks with built in support for most API levels in a windows UI. No need to mess with apktools and such.
Free version in the XDA forums. Think you have to install latest MS .Net though. Can't remember. Give it a go. If you're a ROM cooker, it's a must.
An unlocked bootloader is usually 90% of the battle when getting full root (full means system RW access). Locked bootloaders is why rooting can involve finding exploits, which is why so many root apps are out there. Not saying what worked on the Acer 500/501, 510/511 and 700/701 tabs will work for the TF701, but it's worth investigating.

Thanks for the windows tip but I use VMware with Ubuntu installed and have my harddrive mapped as network drive to transfer files between. Much easier this way. I will check out the program though may need it for some APK altering of certain app (I hope).

Ha, I use a dual boot (win7 and Ubuntu). Old lappy didn't run too well with VM. Need any help, shoot me a PM. Will share what I know.
There's a few other things you can do im Ramdisk, like increase read ahead cache, run a service to update lto.dat automatically (GPS) and a few others.
I only boot to win7 when I want to unpack/repack and boot images when I do kernel builds. (I'm lazy)

Yeah that works just pain to have to shut down windows to boot ubuntu. My PC is a power house, set VMware with 4gb of RAM and still not slowing my PC down LOL.
well new tablet in and little troubleshooting seems problem is bad charge cable, new one starts to charge 1/2 way in, other little flaky. but even new tablet fresh out of box wont let me unlock it so asus tw asked for screen shot of my ids, waiting reply.
