[Q] How can i change the Kernel in NOTE? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a x10 user who changed the kernel, baseband and of course ROM of my little 4 inch x10... all with xrecovery and flashtools.
I'm now with the wonderful Galaxy NOTE and I read that here I should use CMW, stock recovery and other like ROM manager.
but I haven't seen anything that matches with my kernel KJ8... so
can I change my kernel to KKA OR KK8 OR SOMETHING ELSE???
IF THAT'S THE CASE... HOW DO I DO THAT?
THANKS 4 READING AND LOT OF THANKS 4 ANSWERING ME...

yes you can use a kka or kk9 kernel without a problem.
First you need to root and accordingly flash a kernel.
In developer section you can find how to do so.

THANKS
I'VE ROOTED MY NOTE. EVEN I'VE INSTALLED THE CWM RECOVERY.... I FOUND THIS TRHEAD
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371007
BUT THERE'S NO "HOW TO"
CAN U TELL ME PLZ??
THANKS 4 ANSWERING ME X:3

Enough with the capslock.
1. Boot into recovery.
2. From recovery mode, select wipe cache partition
3. Installed zip from SD card
4. Navigate to the kernel and select it to flash it
5. Reboot

Never under any circumstance flash the KK8 Kernel just yet since there's no way to ROOT it.
@georgegon60 You mentioned that you where on KJ8 and that's why you could ROOT it.
Cheers!
Rayan

N70000XXLPT
Kernel Version
3.0.15-N7000XXLQ2-CL605927
[email protected] #3

When I hold the power button, I don't see any 'Recovery' option (The only options are 'Silent mode', 'Data network mode', 'Flight mode', 'Power off' and 'Restart'). What am I missing/doing wrong..?
Many thanks to anyone who can help.
PS. Apologies for posting this in the Q&A section. I'm relatively new so can't yet make a post in the relevant development thread.
only custom ROM users get the APM (advanced power menu)
you will have to do it manually, Power off the phone and hold volume UP + Home + Power all at once
let go when you see the GT-N7000 screen

Thankyou VERY much. I did it, but haven't tried the rooting procedure yet. In the recovery menu, I saw a message about CSC being successfully applied. What does this mean...?
not sure what CSC stands for but it happens to us all, Dont worry about it, Its a good thing that it was applied successfully
Csc is country sales code. And yes as azzledazzle said, its normal to see that message.

All went well (or so I thought) but I have 2 problems:-
I don't think I'm properly or fully rooted. After following the above steps, I installed Mobile Odin Pro (v2.45) and attempted to flash CF-Root-SGN_XX_XEU_LQ2-v5.6-CWM5.zip. I extracted the tar file, placed it on the external SD card and ran it using Mobile Odin Pro. However, upon rebooting, I see that my baseband, kernel version, build no. etc. are still showing exactly the same info in the 'About phone' section under Settings, ie.
Android Version
4.0.3
Baseband Version
N70000XXLPT
Kernel Version
3.0.15-N7000XXLQ2-CL605927
[email protected] #3
Build Number
IML74K.XXLQ2
Is this normal or have I missed an important step? I saw on another thread that perhaps I should have extracted both the tar and zimage files from the CFRoot zip, and then flashed? If so, could someone kindly tell me exactly what to do. For info, SU seems to have installed ok and has granted the necessary permissions to CWM and Mobile Odin Pro as root apps but I can't get into or use either app. What am I missing or doing wrong?
After rebooting, I can no longer use Mobile Odin Pro so cannot attempt a proper flash of whatever kernel I should be using. I can mostly now not get past the 'Loading...Checking SuperUser support...' splash screen. During this period, I see a pop-up which confirms the app has been 'granted SuperUser permissions for an interactive shell'; this pop-up usually appears several times during this loading period. Very occassionally, it gets past the Loading screen but then stays for an equally lengthy time at the next 'Loading...Detecting device model...' screen. If it gets past that, it then fails to detect any device model so I cannot use the app. What am I doing wrong? I've tried rebooting several times - no joy. I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the app - again, no joy.
If anyone can help me out of my rooting misery, I'd be really grateful.
One more thing - I'm not completely clear how I revert to/reinstall a stock ICS ROM once I am properly rooted or from where the phone is now? Can someone please just clarify this for me.
Apologies for the long post - just wanted to give as much information as possible.
Many thanks to all who can help
im not so sure but when you installed cwm and buzybox you did so to flash a custom rom
if you flash a custom rom you will keep the phone root and so on (supersu ecc...)
else you loose partially the root and you need to reflash the apps you lost on rebbot
so choose good cutom ics and go for it
you might try cssie xlite....180 mega
or Rocket Rom 7 700 mg
both work well
p.s. never full wipe or factory reset on ics cfroot kernell....
just do t with abyss kernel 4.2 if you need it and read about eemmmc bug crack
p.s.2 look for drkeatan posts and chasmodo....they made good walkthrough pro

Thanks for the reply. I only rooted in order to use certain root apps (Root Explorer, Titanium Backup etc) and was under the impression that the CF-Root-SGN_XX_XEU_LQ2-v5.6-CWM5.zip was basically a slightly modified stock ICS ROM with CWM included..?

The way I've always rooted is to run the adb script on a gb from, can be found in dr K's post. You need to be rooted before you can flash cwm kernel, 2 separate processes (although combined in some scripts.
There is also a thread somewhere with pre-rooted stock roms, so you could flash one of those as normal with PC Odin and then flash cwm kernel. Might be easier.

Re: New good and safe kernel:- Go Here and download PhilZ-cwm6-DDLR9-INU-2.5-signed.zip. Put it onto your external SD card and just flash it. It is stock kernel BUT with brickbug removed (So no overclocking, but is latest and performs better than some custom kernels). It also has CWM recovery which also blocks bricking commands so it is DOUBLE SAFE! You can also change bootanimation with this kernel. Bear in mind it works only on TW ROMs based on stock ICS, So no PA CM9, CM10 etc.
What are u looking for in a "good" ROM? Fancy? Similar to stock? Trimmed down? What is ur preference?
thanks for your answer...
did you see my pictures? is it safe to change it?

Just had another look at ur Pics. Your currently on a "safe" but slightly outdated kernel. I would still flash Philz (Double Safe remember?) Sounds like u want a cool ROM with lots of bells and whistles. Try Alliance
aha...
so it's ok to flash another good kernel and a ROM...
how to do it? in a safe way....
sorry if i put so many questions, but i don't want to mess up my beloved phone.....

OK, so
1) Copy philz kernel and alliance ROM to external SD card
2) Reboot into recovery (vol up+Home+power)
3) Select install zip from SD card and then "choose zip from sdcard"(some kernels have it wrong way round so u may need to select choose zip from "internal" SD card)
4) Select PhilZ-cwm6-DDLR9-INU-2.5-signed.zip and flash.
5) Select advanced and reboot into recovery.
6) U are now on Philz double safe kernel.
7) Go to Wipe Data/Factory Reset and select "yes.... delete all user data"
8) Go back and select Wipe cache partition and Wipe cache
9) Go to advanced and select Wipe Dalvik Cache "Yes.. Wipe Dalvik Cache"
10) Go back (twice) and select Mounts ans Storage and select format /system "yes - format"
11) Anything that says "mount" - do it ( except mount usb storage)
12) Go back and select install zip from sd card same as before.
13) go to new ROM and select it and "yes - Install ....
14) Wait for installation to complete then go back twice and "reboot system now"
15) Phone will take a while to set up so be patient.
16) "Ficeto" Kernel u are now on should also be safe. (just stay on it while on this ROM in case of compatibility issues)
17) Press thanks button on my posts (just joking)
thanks for info....

Coz it can be flashed in recovery (even Stock!) - no need for Odin (that is for TAR version only). Also LR9 is Faaast:good:
in the original post of the kernel there are versions for all ROMs . so select it for ur rom and install it. as its a stock kernel it can be flashed from the stock recovery 3e as well.. Odin as well. any that suits u

[Q] How to install CWM manually

Hi all,
I want to install CWM on my rooted SGS however there appears to be on CF Kernel that matches my JVN Kernel so using the CF method is not an option from what I have read.
So I installed ROM Manager and tried to install it that way but I now get signature verification errors when I go into Recovery.
Next I downloaded the recovery image from the CWM website but I cannot seem to find any information on installing it onto a SGS.
If anyone could offer any suggestions it would be appreciated.
TIA
Greg
Edit: Firmware is 2.3.3
Why dont you just flash JVU then Root it
Comes with CWM ....
As I am guessing you want CWM to flash a rom yes?
If so most Roms require ...from my knowledge a clean install of JVU with ODIN before flashing a New Rom

Download this "update.zip". Place it in your SD card. Power off and boot into recovery with the 3 button combination (press power, volume up and home button till you see the boot logo) and select "apply sdcard: update.zip". DO NOT DELETE THIS FROM SD. You should have CWM installed now. Let me know if you have any problem.
You need to root your phone first with update.zip for i9000, download the latest CWM.zip, put it in the storage. Then go to recovery and install the CWM.zip Goodluck flashing!

Can you use any version of JVU? eg: Europe, Asia, Australia. Or, should you only use one for your region, in my case Australia.
I have an Australian verion of JW6 (2.3.6), would that be acceptable?

Thanks for the UPDATE.ZIP, I note it is just a renamed CWM. I did not know you could just rename them and then install them. Thanks.
So, my plan at this stage is to update to 2.3.6 (JW6) and then install CWM via UPDATE.ZIP. Should this work?
TIA

Yeah you can upgrade first. Flash a firmware or upgrade OTA. You should root your phone first before flashing a custom recovery such as CWM.

[Q] Help restoring my rooted Galaxy Note n7000 to stock status.

Hi there,
I have a rooted Galaxy Note N7000 running JellyBean 4.1.2. and I've got a ton of apps/photos/videos/messages... etc.
and I've sensed the phone is getting slow. I've removed all the unnecessary apps and deleted photos/videos etc..
but its still slow.
so anyway I decided to start from scratch, I decided to unroot the phone and install a stock rom. delete all photos/videos/apps.. everything.
so I downloaded the official latest stock rom released from samsung for my region. (N7000JPLSB_N7000OJPLSB_XSG)
and I've looked at many many pages on the internet and some site different methods than other, which got confusing.
finally i decided i'd go with the method mentioned in this page:
rootgalaxynote(dot)com/galaxy-note-unroot/how-to-unroot-galaxy-note-gt-n7000/
(sorry for the link formatting it wouldn't let me post a url)
the problem is, at the end of the page it says to do a “Wipe data/factory reset”. However, I have read on many sites and threads that you should never do a factory reset on stock Rom!
So now i'm confused.
1- is the method mentioned in the page i linked above correct and safe?
2- will the method above delete everything? ie: photos/videos/apps.. etc (which is what i want) if not, how do i achieve that?
3- do i do a Wipe data/factory reset? or not?
Thanks in advance.

Before doing this just make sure you have a working usb connection because after the steps there won't the any rom on phone to boot till you flash the new now.

Yes, use tar.md5 file with Odin PC as previously shown.
That file is Philz kernel and add ROOT by default. To avoid root add, use philz_installer.cfg as indicated in the Philz thread.
Ok great, thank you for all the help.
i just hope i don't brick the phone
HI just one last fast question please...
as for philz_installer.cfg it says to put it in /sdcard/clockworkmod/philz_installer.cfg
but i don't have a clockworkmod folder.
should i create it? or put on directly on /sdcard main folder?
Don't use the tar file. It will cause a yellow triangle. Use the zip version. Place it on external sd card. Don't worry about cfg file for now. Boot into recovery and choose apply update from external storage. Choose the zip and flash. After it completes, click on reboot system. The again boot into recovery and you should see cwm

I've often used Odin PC to flash new ROM's, for example Stock LT4 and Stock LT5, no problem, no yellow triangle. To avoid it in the future, please explain when and why we get the trouble triangle yellow. Thanks.:good:
you will get a yellow triangle if you flash anything else that stock roms using PC odin. you will also get an increased counter. nothing to worry if you are out of warranty though

2. Install modified Flash Gordon app (no busybox installation needed)
3. Download this recovery to SDcard
4. Launch the app and allow it root access
5. Tap "select zip", find the zip, "flash now"

1. Root your device
2. Install modified Flash Gordon app (no busybox installation needed)
3. Download this recovery to SDcard
4. Launch the app and allow it root access
5. Tap "select zip", find the zip, "flash now"
6. Don´t try to reboot with the app, but do regular reboot in power menu <--------------- Doesent work !!!

No need to shout at people when you want them to help you...
You should not reboot at step 5 (using the app), but in stead read step 6 and reboot normally (powerbutton -> shutdown/reboot -> start device). You don't automatically enter recovery upon reboot, and remember, recovery is not an app. When booting, press the volume up button when the LED turns pink, if you installed correctly you will enter recovery.
