webOS open sourced - Nook Color General

http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2011/111209xa.html?mtxs=rss-corp-combined
Now that it is open sourced...and we have a great hackable device..

That is if HP doesn't change its mind like it has on all the other decisions in the last 3 months.

I missed the firesale (in the UK), unfortunately. It appeared in argos.co.uk and I ordered one, but all I had was a lousy excuse that it had already run out. This is good news! Anyone else has an idea where I can get one for only $99?

Can't wait to see what the community does with this.

I was trying to extract os image from my palm sdk/emulator but nothing good come out of it yet. If anyone have any ideas or tips, maybe some experience with extracting images from android sdk and porting them to phones, or useful tutorial how its done.

..seems there was some interest at the above thread when it was closed source.. perhaps we will see some renewed interest?
Here's hoping!

I think its a neat idea, however I think they could've garnered their own support (for the os) if they just added compatibility coding with native android apps (webos is still built on top of linux). Open-sourced was still one of the better decisions we've seen from that company in the past year.

What does this thread have to do with the Nook Color?

It has very similar hardware to a webos device, therefore porting it would be a bit easier than for devices with no drivers at all. Could be interesting, I've never played with a webos device so I am kind of curious how user friendly their software is.

Thats the shame 'bout HTC (besides da poor quality of hard- and software): they setup ONE hardware and make 5 PDAs with slighty changed details. they were never interested in making good hardware.. everytime they took something away the previous model had... now, they do have android and are able to clone nearly the same device just with another OS.
in commercial aspects, this makes sense.... but as consumer I can only think of it as a pain in the neck. my old universal has a high res display, a 3,5mm audioconnector, a well made keyboard and a fast cpu... years ago... a shame it is the size of a brick .
If someone would mad it possible to use the Compass HW with WinMo i would gladly set a bounty of 50$.
Goal would be a little App to proof that it ist working plus the sourcecode for other Devs.
Does anyone join in?
its probably another 'tv out' scenario...
basically the chipset has the tech but other required hardware / software is not present hence the features can never be used.
why on earth HTC cripple devices like this is boggling.....if the HD had been released with TV-out (which the qualcomm chipset supports) & a hw compass (to be confimed) it would have levelled the competition.....
i am sure their marketing strategy has good reasons for not doing...but as said earlier from the consumers point of view its a pain in the butt...especially considering some of us are locked in 24 month contracts.!! so wont be purchasing other handsets even if we wanted too.
lets hope some clever devs find a way to unlock these features!! (if possible)

I disagree your argumentation:
Developers here wrote drivers to implement TMC and RDS into the features of the Blackstone. HTC hasn´t done it yet.
HTC seems to leave possible feature unused. Maybe to save time for their developers.
The old topic of a missing video driver is another example for that.

50$ from me for unlocking the feature + another 100$ if anyone makes it work with Google Maps + another 100$ if someone makes an augmented reality app like Wikitude (Android).

I've read the same thread from Tuxhero and I have to see it before I believe it. The only thing we've got is a blanket statement that he has read it somewhere. Someone else created slight confusion on this site before with similar statements.
Not saying that he's lying (in fact, I hope he's right), a source would help. Until then, I'm not getting my hopes up.
Im guessin they didnt include alot of features cause when the phone was released whoever ws going to buy it would buy it anyway, and when competitors (Iphone3gs) release phones with features like the compass thing etc , htc can easily release newer phones with the same features ... sort of like having it ready on earlier models so when they need to release it they can quickly!
My guess

Oooooh a new leak! Let us know if you notice anything new.
Ok, Froyo 2.3.15 and Tranquility 2.3.5rc installed smoothly, but when I tried applying Onix Gala X theme from ROM Manager, I got stuck at the M logo. Battery pull solved the issue. So I'll try applying the theme manually.
I haven't noticed anything new so far from the short time I spent browsing around the phone. I'm dying to see the change logs lol!
Edit: manually installing Gala X theme worked =)
Edit2: I'm not sure if it was true for 2.3.13, but in this one Flash shows up in the Market.
In the market for 2.3.13 too, noticed it today .

Okay... Not trying to sound like an ass but this has been eating away at me for a good twelve hours or so....
You are paying for an app. Cool idea in my opinion.
You are also paying for access to mods. Not unheard of.(supporting is good)
Lots of hype for access to something no one else has.
Using the hype to, in a way, make people donate for your work that is kind of iffy. I like what those guys are trying to do but I do not like how they are doing it. I just can't quite hit on the point I am trying to make but I feel something scetchy is going on here. Thus, I go back to... Paying for an app that creates access to what they are making. Cool idea in my opinion.
God I hope I don't get flamed to hard for this.... Trying hard not to be a Debbie Downer.
Those that are satisfied with the Tranquility roms will likely donate. Although I do believe the leak itself should be available to the general public.

Dude I understand you have your opinion, but if you don't want to support, then you may just have to wait for someone else to find a leak source in one of the MOST locked down firmware arenas for android, TBH is doing an amazing job! THREE 2.2 updates before motosuck released its first!? They deserve the two bucks for the app. Mind you this is coming from a person who has only purchased one app for his droid x; the one we are talking about. Besides with all the C&D motosuck has been throwing around this is a resonable alternative to insure we get the content we want. OH! And not to mention tranquility is one of the best alternatives to motoblur out right now, $2 seems like a VERY small price to pay for no hassle dl's and quick update potential. Thank you again Team Black Hat for all the hard work! I see kernel's in the near future.... Wahoo!

if someone got this working for a touchpad, i would be willing to give up android and webos for this. i am actually a fan of webos and i wish it had better support. i am just a user and no dev, so in reality i am not a solution.
With most things android it will just require the right people and circumstances and it can happen. But the touchpad has had its issues with compatibility and not to short any of the devs here, it seems that there are fewer with touchpads than other devices so ya never know.
As soon as we get 13.04 fully working on the Touchpad (well, at least to a point where it is useable like the 12.10 now) then we can get Ubuntu for Phones. It's not so much the kernel because they're gonna fully open source Ubuntu for Phones by the end of this month so we only need to port the GUI over to the 13.04 base (which should be doable).
Though I'm not sure how useable it would be. I mean, it's targeted for 4-5 inch phones so will it be useable and not just a stretched lay-out like the old Android 2.3 tablets?

Considering that Shuttleworth announced ubuntu for tablets within the last couple days, I think we can be hopeful that a "tablet ubuntu" will end up on the touchpad a short time after it ends up on other android devices.
Basically, its as easy to build as CM.

Pulled sources this morning and cross compiled. In the emulator everything works perfectly. Will have to to wait till the USPS brings me my new tablet in the next few days to be sure. But i think i can have something ready to go fairly soon.
I have done ports before with some success. you just gotta understand, getting it running and getting the hardware support are two very different things.

Most ov the content at https://code.google.com/p/hp-touchpad-ubuntu/ is not super helpful at this point. The base for the Ubuntu touch system is CM10. The native ubuntuArm project is a much more pure version of the Ubuntu system than the Ubuntu touch system will ever be that it makes half of the files unusable.

I just meant for the partitioning part that he was having trouble with. My scripts didn't have much to do with Ubuntu itself, more terminal commands run within WebOS to create the necessary partitions for Ubuntu. I think those might help still though, if someone wants to keep Android instead of replacing it with Ubuntu Touch.

Just got a Nexus, have some questions

Hi,
I was really hoping the rumors would have been true and the Nexus 7 2 would have been announced. I was ready to pre-order last week. That didn’t happen so I pulled the trigger on the current Nexus 7. While I'm disappointed that I didn't get to get the brand new one I am VERY happy with it so far. I also got the official Nexus dock and a keyboard case. I have to say the official dock is so great I may buy a 2nd one! It’s overpriced but soooo nice.
Anyway, one thing I want to do right away is be able to get and send SMS texts from my phone on my N7. I have a Droid Razr Maxx by the way. What is the best software to do this?
Is there a free way to turn on the wireless tether on my Razr so I can connect my N7 to it? I also play Ingress and it would be cool to be able to use the N7 for that.
I'm not ready to root and try a custom ROM yet but what are some of the "must have" apps for the N7? Any info would be great!
Thanks

Exactly. I wasn't going to buy the current one until after the big Google announcement. That would just be dumb. But again, I love this device so lets stop talking about "what if" or "when it does come out"... I want to talk about the cool things this one can do.
:cyclops:
Since its brand new, i'd recommend unlocking and rooting right away, just to get that out of the way should you wish to flash stuff later. Better to do it early since unlocking wipes everything and there's little data to keep that early. Having said that, I just finally unlocked/rooted after months of ownership and replacing all the data was trivial. Just a recommendation.
It's a very capable tablet completely stock, I just like tweaking things and the tablet UI is cool IMO.

[Q] Best way to create a bounty or ask a dev to help get an app working on lolipop?

Might sound silly but one of my favorite Android games (Jet Set Radio) was never updated to run on lollipop. Sega has instead just pulled the app from the market. The game starts to load but soon crashes. Without knowing anything about development i have a feeling the problem is probably not a serious one and a talented developer maybe able to get the .apk working again

That. ^^^
Also, just don't. Don't start bounties, don't create pressure on a developer to do anything. If you want to see what is what, send them an email offering to pay them directly.
Also, if the program/game was popular and they pulled it, then it was probably more than trivial changes needed to make it work again.

Sega is just a terrible Mobile company. They recently pulled many titles some of which still work even without updates on lolipop.
I heard the Company as a whole is focusing more on mobile but with moves like this how? Unless they will rely on the strength of a few key titles (like SonicRush) and say screw the rest

They pulled it from the app store for incompatibility issues. I followed a link saying "get it from play before it disappears" and I was able to install it.
