[Q] Stuck in standby - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
i Have a Galaxy S here im using to try and learn android as i support handsets for my job and not had much experience with android.
However..
the galaxy will often get stuck in standby, you can still call it but the screen wont come back and i have to remove the battery. A similar thread for HTC desire is on this forum and it suggested changing to 3g only or 2g only if it was when it was switching however 99% of the time im in a strong 3g area and it very rarely switches so i dont see this as the cause.
Is there any thing else i can check. handset is running latest stock gingerbread 2.3.4 kernel 2.6.35.7.
Are there log files i can check for odd occurances.
I know way back in the past on my old winmo handsets that an app stored on memory card if the notification queue tried to access it from standby it would hang. Not sure if this is similar.
Any help would be great, thanks

Are you OC it? Is it using a custom lockscreen?

adb logcat will show you what is going on in android.

no, just the stock ui the phone comes with, hasnt ever been flashed with anything unofficial just kies to software update.
Only apps installed are Lastpass (not running) and Google+ not running but it did this before i installed these too

thanks, is there a tool in the sdk to get a remote shell to run those commands, or can they be run from the phone itself?

Wifi tether help w/ 2.1

Hey everyone,
I'm pretty new to the forums so please bear with me if I'm posting in the wrong spot or totally missed a similar thread.
I just recently decided to go ahead and root my phone after the 2.1 update and before that "security patch" closed the hole. So I successfully rooted my HTC (sprint) hero w/ regaw_leinad's post (awesome help thanks btw).
Everything seems to be running great, but one of the main reasons I attempted to go ahead and root my phone was to use some 3rd party apps, most notably the WIFI Tether app.
It installed correctly and everything looks like great except for it doesn't actually seem to connect to anything. I can see the connection just fine on several laptops and even my ipad sees it. I can connect to it, and I can ping the gateway just fine, but when attempting to actually surf the web, grab email, etc it just doesn't work (shows page cannot be displayed).
I've been following a couple of threads that indicate that the something is just simply wrong with the stock 2.1 HTC ROM that prevents it, and you need to change to a custom ROM to get it to work (I think some people are using the MoDaCo (sp??)).
So I'm definitely not opposed to flashing the ROM. Would you agree that is the issue and if so, what ROM should I flash to?
Thanks in advance!
i have the same problem with the stock rom, rooted
i use wifi tether 1.6
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...il?name=wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk&can=2&q=
works fine for me on 2.1
Mine connects but without net. I just start up the tether then disable mobile net on the phone then enable it back then works like a charm

Basically, this is a long ass list of different things, but take a look at the bottom post:
Start Wireless Tether
Hold down the red Hang Up button
Tap the last option "Mobile Network to disable my network
Again hold down the red Hang Up button and re-enable my "Mobile Network"
Just confirmed it works - can connect my ipad, mac, pc laptop to it. I'm using a stock 2.1 android that's just been freshly rooted. Spread the word if anyone is having the same trouble.
ah Sim beat me to it
are you using an app off the market or the one on http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether, if so, which version worked for you?
Lol yeah i figured it out yesterday by accident trying to get my laptop going

lol thats slow as he11, must have poor reception usually i can get 1.5 up and .5 down with a 150-300ms ping with good reception.
I had the same problem with the version from the market. I went to the developer's website and there were some newer alternate versions of that app. I installed the one from May 25th (I think) and it works like a charm.
I used the one click root on unrevoked.com to root my Hero
The market version has never worked for me. It actually even says in the notes for the market version there's a new version for the Hero and Legend on the site. That being said, the only one that works for me without disconnecting/reconnecting over and over is 1.60.
"Unable to star tethering. Please try again!"
my hero is definitely rooted i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 awhile ago. I downloaded tether app from google code as posted earlier, but every time i click the green tether it stays start tethering then goes to "Unable to star tethering. Please try again!"
I also tried the hang up button trick as mentioned.
Thanks for your help.
ps. I haven't changed any settings am i supposed to in the Wireless Tether for Root Users? Also is there a specific way to install? I just downloaded by emailing my self url and installing from the device.

[Q] Downgrade or Root 2.27.651.6

I was selling my phone and i decided to give it the latest update from sprint now its restarting randomly every time. Is anyone know how to fix this restarting problem or can anyone help me root it or downgrade it to something else PLEASE??
2.27.651.6 is the software that the phone as now
Throw DarchDroid on it.
Use this. It is the original unpatched 2.27.651.5 RUU upgrade utility. It can be used to downgrade.
Credits go to Regaw for his link.
http://www.4shared.com/file/2uQunBaV/RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2276515_R_si.html
I know for sure it works because I've used it to downgrade it a lot. Once you do, if you'd like to root, follow Regaw's Guide (Link)

Back to 1.5 please?
Sorry, noob here. Will this let me downgrade my phone back to 1.5? 2.1 sucks big time, and I just want my old phone back.
Thanks for the help.

I'm afraid not. That RUU I posted is specifically for the 2.1 release with the rooting exploit possibility.
Before dumping 2.1, I urge you to give a custom rom a try. It really makes a world of difference,

Thanks...can you recommend a "basic" version? I would just like a clean fast-running OS. No bells and whistles.
I originally wanted BT to work with my pdanet, but can live without that.
I also tried running a hack to get the wireless to see ad hoc networks, but it didn't work either. It too would be nice, but having a phone that doesn't crash would be nicer.
The change of the Maps annoys me the most. The old system used a call-in voice recognition system that worked. The new OS uses "on-board" voice recognition that is the worst I have EVER seen. It can't get ANY words right.
So, you're trying to drive and yelling at the phone for not getting the address correctly, and the type-in option keeps changing screens, closing the keyboard, etc. It's so absolutely useless, I'm shocked any idiot ever decided it was good enough to get though beta.
Thanks,
Greg

Well, it is certainly subjective, but yes, a non-Sense (ha!) Rom does look much more basic. My advice is to try RegawMOD, (the non-themed version) its incredibly fast, and comes with Sense.
By the way, you may be confusing the Maps app with the Navigation app (they are two different apps). The navigation app still does voice recognition.

Thanks, I'll try it out.
Yes, I meant Navigation. The voice recognition on the new Navigation doesn't work at all. Zero zilch nada. It can't recognize the simplest words. "San Jose" becomes "Ben Lomond" or some random city on the other side of the country (it has no geographical sense).
The older system (tied to 1.5, I guess?) had a call-in system that analyzed the voice print offline, on a big computer I guess, and sent the link to your phone. It seemed to work nearly every time.
There's a Stock 2.1 ROM out there if you really want to keep it basic. Just look in the Development section.

No, that's my problem. 2.1 sucks ass. Nothing works as well as 1.5 did, and definitely nothing works better.
Great...
Thought I had DC 2.09 installed clean...until it started to lag, so I rebooted. Now I'm stuck at work without a phone that works, since it's stuck in a bootloop.
F this...Sprint sent me a new phone. After I confirm it's 1.5, this 2.1-infected POS goes back.

It won't bootloop unless you enabled JIT. And since it's in a bootloop, just pull the battery lol.
Oh, and there are probably no 1.5 Hero's at Sprint anymore. They're most likely ALL 2.1
Hi, guys. I need help but I don't want to start an entirely new thread so I'll add it here.
I just got a new Sprint HTC Hero and it comes preloaded with 2.27.651.6, and I'm trying to downgrade to 2.27.651.5 but when I open RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.exe it opens with a loading bar, the bar completes, and then the installer closes. But there's still an instance of it in Task Manager.
I've been struggling with this for days, if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
Edit: I'm on Windows XP SP3, my anti-virus and firewall are disabled, and my phone is connected to HTC Sync. I've also tried in Safe Mode.
2.27.651.6 fix issues
hey i just went and got a new cdma hero from sprint because my old on had hardware issues... well i looked and low and behold software build 2.27.651.6... so I get the RUU installer and it keeps giving me an error... i get the progress bar then the verifying info on your phone. then I get error message (170) connection error... its saying my phone isn't connected so i do the fastboot method and still nothing can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?
I'm no expert, but I think I read that if you run the ruu twice, back to back, it will work. I believe it's in regaw's thread somewhere .
For the connection error, do you have the latest htc sync? It has updated drivers.

I tried it several time and im pretty sure I have the new sync. I currently don't have a working computer so i can't try at command I have to borrow a computer and try it but I did try several times and kept getting the connection error.
I'd you are on the .6 build there is a new root tool available. You should be able to do a search for the thread. I'll look for here in a sec.
Edit:
I can't figure out how to post a link from the mobile app but the thread is in the dev section posted by Zenulator.

What can I do with my old G1?

So I've got a G1 that was on T-Mobile but I've been with Sprint since October. What can I do with it besides sell it?
Can I activate it without a cell plan/sim card if I upgrade the ROM? It was rooted way back when, but it's running an old version of 1.5.
If I managed to activate it on a 2.1 or 2.2 ROM, would I be able to download apps from the market? I'm wondering if I could just use the phone on WiFi around the house, maybe use it as a remote Google Talk device or something.
Other ideas are much appreciated!

steps root, update spl recovery and radio (in proper order) , and flash some roms.
Cool, so I can do all the above then! Man, activating a phone without a SIM is a pain! I'm surprised there isn't an easier way built into a ROM. I also hope it still works since it's almost a year an a half since the method was last updated! Thanks for the links, much appreciated!
Don't worry, most roms can skip the google sign in process without much hastle. A few days ago I found an article that says that you can skip the google sign in by pushing the 4 corners of the "press the android to continue" screen. Push them in this order:
12
43
I can link you to a video of this if my instructions aren't clear. I haven't tried it on every rom but I know for sure CM6 let's you do that

Just got a Rogers Captivate (i896) - New to Android & Rooting, Couple questions

Hey everyone, I just recently got a Samsung Captivate with Rogers, which is the i896.
I've been hearing a lot about rooting lately and i'm starting to understand a little more about what it is exactly. I'm interested in the idea that it can help speed up the phone and allow for more apps, but I have a few questions.
1) Where can I find the most recent way to root a ROGERS Captivate? I was reading around and read that the "One click fix" does not work anymore
2) Will rooting my phone change the interface of the phone?
3) If something goes wrong and my phone doesn't root, can I go back to the default settings easily?
I might have more questions later on but thats it for now. I'd just also like to hear your opinions on rooting and what exactly YOU have been able to do with your phone by rooting.
Thanks!
welcome ill answer your qs first then ill give you some links to help you out
A)rooting and flashing roms (2 diff things) are easiest done from STOCK 2.1 (which you should have) if you plan on flashing custom roms DONT do the rogers/samsung keis firmware update. it changes the recovery to 3e. (ink below if needed)
B) rooting does not change the interface. ROMS DO
C) if you cant successfully root, nothing has changed. you should be able to tho. and you can UNROOT, and wipe to factory too. for warranty repairs and they will never know.
OPPINION:
custom roms are the way to go, more current, full featured complete and on time, cutomizable, fun, and brain-power using than stock roms.
MY ADVICE: DO IT but TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ. I READ FOR 3 or 4 days before i touched a thing!! and still had very minor issues and things that had to be ironed out. dont let that scare you. its a learning experience. hopefully with the links i give you you will have less SEARCHING TO DO. but you my freind, are in the right fourm and right section, too! i have a good feeling about you already!
YOU CAN DO IT WATERBOY!!!

First of all, thank you guys so much for giving me real replies instead of a bunch of "Go read for yourself" or "try the search button" lol... I've been doing some reading but I needed to ask a few direct questions.
@Trusselo, i'm not too ignorant to computers. I know my way around a computer and used to do some web design and basic coding so i'm somewhat okay.
My only concern is that once i've rooted my phone, I have to use some sort of unix/linux commands to work around my phone and do things? Is this true? Also, I read that the rooted version has a different keyboard? I still have a hard time getting used to this touchscreen board.
SIDE QUESTION ABOUT CAPTIVATE AND WIFI: This is my biggest problem right now, its actually a small problem but it gets annoying. Basically, my WiFi stays connected when i'm at home but sometimes it seems like it slows done or the connection lags or even stops working. I can usually tell if this is happening because pages don't load fast enough in the browser or don't load at all. While this is happening, my wifi connection still says "Connected" though. I always have to go back, disconnect, re-type my password, connect again. Then I go back and it works fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Just rooting the phone does not change the interface at all. Rooting just allows you access to the locked system files so you can change them.
Also you won't have to use terminal commands to do hardly anything, but it would be a good practice to learn how to use it.
From there you can change your keyboard if you like. There are a few keyboards out there that are better than the stock keyboard is, as far a functionality.
Be warned once you get onto flashing and modding your phone, its like an addiction, and you probably wont be able to stop.

i really hope that you didnt think i was accusing you of not being good with computers or being patronizing, i was just trying to provide you (or anyone else that reads this) with as much info as i could, while not doing the work for you.
terminal commands: ive never had to use them, no adb shell, no terminal emulator on phone, although it wouldnt be outside of my skill, i just prefer to do it without learning something i dont need to. (yet.. still thinking about learning some apping)
keyboard: rooting does not change any part of the UI at all, all rooting does is allow you to access (read / write / copy /delete) protected system files. And you can only do those scary things with use of other root apps after rooting your phone.
wifi: this is why some people flash new modems, if you still have issues and really want to send it back for warranty, dont worry, you can have it back good as new in no time!
Not too sure what you mean by flash new modems... ? And I wasn't accusing you of anything lol. Just letting you know that i'm not 100% dumb when it comes to computer but even then I don't know if I would be ready to use typed commands and stuff to use my phone.

The modem is simply what the phone uses for connectivity. It is a separate piece of the firmware that can be flashed on its own. It is a topic that is a little beyond the scope of this post. However, there is a stickied thread in the Captivate development forum called 'the modem thread' that outlines a lot of the information. The main reason many people do this change is that some experience better connectivity, lower battery consumption, and some other benefits. Again modems are beyond the scope of this post, so I encourage you to read that sticky, as there can be some pitfalls to changing modems. Best of luck and enjoy the great phone!
Oh okay thank you. I thought you meant I would have to take my phone back and get a new one. The WiFi works fine, its just that I have to disconnect, enter my wifi password, then reconnect sometimes for it to work properly.
Do you mean that the WiFi is something that can be changed after the phone is rooted to work better?
Can't say for sure, but it's always worth rooting anyway.

Optimal OS version for Captivate?

I have a Samsung Captivate i897 and just put 4.4.4 KitKat on it. Running a bit slow. Not horrible but noticeable. How does OS version 5 work on the Captivate? Guessing slower than KitKat as OS versions usually get more enhanced?
If people had to recommend a particular OS that was the most current you could get without any real loss in performance what would it be? Found 2.3.5 was fine the few minutes I was on it. But that's pretty old. Was originally going to go for 4.2.2 but found an article on 4.4.4 so went straight to it. Curious other's opinions.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Thanks for the help. Excuse my naiveté with this process, first time upgrading an old Android phone last night. Actually got me more interested in Android devices than I ever was. I installed CM11 nightly and as mentioned with 4.4.4 it was a bit slower than I'd like. What OS gets installed as part of 10.1.3? Is that 4.3? Also as far as "stable", is it very responsive if that's the case?
Thanks.

Sweet appreciate your input. Is there a good way to backup the contacts and stuff? This is a relatives phone and I think they are getting tired of having to re-enter the contacts every time I try a new OS version. I did have the contacts entered this time as "google sync" contacts, but not sure if that will be accessible in 4.2.2 and a few I entered as local contacts before I knew I couldn't change it to google synced contacts later.
Thanks.

The 'google sync' contacts should be accessible from 4.2.2. As a precaution you could also open the contacts app and export contacts to your external sdcard. Then, if 'google sync' does not replace your contacts you could import them from the external card after flashing the replacement ROM.
BTW, I am using GamerzRom 4.0 Legend Edition on my Captivate. It is based on CM 10.1 which is android 4.2.2. It runs well for me. I saw it recommended several times by @BWolf56. I maintain my Captivate as a backup device to my SGS3. While I do not use it as a phone, I do use it constantly as an mp3player, sports tracking device, etc. I am still able to load new apps and update current apps.
Thanks for the tips and reference to GamerzRom 4.0 Legend Edition. One question unrelated to the nature of the thread. Captivate currently has 4.4.4 installed. When a text message comes in, and has pictures included, which is all that came in so far, it fails to return the message. I can't recall the message as at work now but says it couldn't connect or something. I just know it's a picture as the person who sent it told me they would be texting me with some pictures. Is this something broken in 4.4.4 that may work in 4.2.2? Otherwise may have to go to Samsung default 2.3.5.
Thanks.

It could be a couple of things, a few things to check before flashing anything are:
1) Check in settings to ensure that the APN settings are recognized.
2) Make sure your modem is recognized.
3) Check the settings of the messaging app you are using.
4) Make sure data is turned on. On one of my devices I routinely keep data turned off. I will get notified of an incoming MMS with pictures, video, group messages, etc, with a icon to click to download the message. If I try to download the message before turning data on I will get an error message. After that I am unable to download even after turning data on.
On the Captivate you can reflash your modem separate from flashing the entire stock ROM, which I would do before flashing back to stock Gingerbread. If flashing the modem only doesn't work that's when I would flash stock GB 2.3.5.
I'm now at 4.2.2. Texting working but sometimes pictures are a bit laggy coming in. Sometimes come in out f order if I send a text then a picture then another text, I'll get two texts and then the picture. But it shows up. I do have one thing that concerns me. When I first upgraded Mobile Network State was Connected, now it's disconnected. Not sure if that's something that happens once you switch from 3G to being connected also to wifi.

Some of that may be related to the modem version. I guess you could try another and see if it works better.
As of one of the Jellybean releases, I don't recall which, the network data connection is automatically disabled when you are connected to wifi (IIRC).
Been running since last post now. Been working good. Only issue I have is the soft buttons. When unplugged it turns off in the odd setting of 1.6 seconds but when I plug in the charger the soft buttons stay lit up all the time. Can't get them to turn off as long as plugged into the USB port and charging. Thoughts?
Thanks.

Mine is turning off after the set time (1.6 sec) when plugged into a wall charger, and when not plugged in. I may have other things on/off different from you that is affecting this; such as notification lights turned off. Also, I haven't tried with the USB cable set into a computer port.
Thanks. Doesn't help but thanks. Mine is out of the box settings. Tried a bunch of changes but nothing works.
