Booting GNU/Linux on the Tab 8.9 - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

Is anyone working on a GNU/Linux kernel for the Tab 8.9?
A full list of hardware devices are missing, and I have no idea how to roll a boot.img.
It'd be fun to use Gnome 3 with a touchscreen

There is an ubuntu bt version in t,he Tab 10.1 section, works perfectly on the 8.9
Maybe that helps or you find other linux versions there

It's not a native version, it's simply a chroot.
And while in a chroot, there's no OpenGL or any fun stuff.

tun.ko for 4.1.57

Attached tun.ko for 4.1.57. Works for me with VPNC. I put it in /system/lib and the VPNC Widget can load it.
awesome!!!! i was waiting for this to be able to connect to my cisco vpn!
great post!!!
Note: network connection tracking does not work
This means that after you connect to VPNC, disconnect from VPNC, turn wifi off, and then turn wifi back on, your connection will be hosed. As a workaround, you can run the VPNC widget settings pane and retoggle wifi. This resets the network state.
thx for this tread.good job
Thanks for shared! this file working well on 1.83 too
It's working perfectly on the Brazillian version of Atrix from Claro carrier.
I really wanted the possibility of compiling other modules for my Atrix stock kernel.
I really wanted to use some volume encryption functionality... As such a tool does not exist natively for Android, I`m thinking about using some kernel functinoality such as Loop-AES, LUKS, DM-Crypt or even some userspace FS for encryption (FUSE).
So, could anyone point me where i can find the source code for the Atrix kernel to try to compile those modules for it? I really think that this could be a great thing. One of the very fews things that i miss on Full Linux.
Thanls in advance.

Victor, are you using the stock kernel with this or did you need to recompile it?
I'm very sorry for the looooooooooooooooong delay in the answer.
And yes i was using on the stock kernel (Claro Brazil Android 2.2). Now i'm trying to use OpenVPN on the latest 2.3.6 official rom and it's not working anymore...
I'm thinking in some workround... any ideas?
Cheers.

The tun.ko module doesn't work, I was going to compile one for 2.3.4 (at least the stock kernel) but it seems my desktop killed itself, and I'm not going to install linux on my laptop (it seems to suck with booting from CD, and USB doesn't work... no idea why, but it works fine with Windows Discs)
Might consider using Faux's kernel, it has TUN/TAP (I've never tested though)

[Q] T-Mobile Galaxy Tab - Few Questions

Hi guys, just this week I got a new Galaxy Tab from T-Mobile, so far so good, but I have a few questions about it.
1-) This is my first time using Android, is there a better version or ROM for this particular tab (or another that is fully compatible) which I should flash into it which is better or gives me more functionality than the default Android installation that T-Mobile puts on it?
2-) How are upgrades of Android OS obtained? I heard 3.0 is out, any ideas if Samsung or T-Mobile will make it available on these devices?
3-) Can "Line2" be used with it? I noticed when I'm connected to Wi-Fi at home Line2 works, but when I'm connected to 3G it wont work.
4-) Is it easy to install Themes on the Galaxy Tab, any tutorials?
5-) Any specific tricks/tweaks or apps, that are a must have for Galaxy Tab owners?
Thanks in advance!
-Eli
I also just got my SGT T-mobile. What is the model number of your tablet? What is the Baseband version of your tablet? Have you rooted yours?
Mine's model is SGH-T849, Baseband T849UVJJB, and yes, I downloaded a program from this board which supposedly roots it, after installing and running the commands it said it had successfully rooted my device, now how do I know if it is really rooted?
Also what's the Baseband? lol sorry but I'm lost, this is my first ever tablet and also first ever Android OS device.

We both have the same model and baseband. I'm not sure what baseband is. You can check to see if your tablet is rooted by going to Applications and look around to see if you can find a Superuser icon.
If it's rooted, I guess your next step is to find a custom ROM and flash it.
Do you remember what you used to root your tablet? Was it SuperOneClick?
Yes, it was the SuperOneClick one from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812367
Baseband is the modem you have. The modem controls the phone, wirelass data, wifi, and bluetooth. Yours is JJB.

Well, I'm not an expert but here is my experience:
1. You should flash the new Overcome experience Hermes:
http://overcome.mimzo.com/
There is also the unofficial cyanogenmod beta, but as you said the overcome is fully compatible and it will not change the feel of the Tab, just adds to the functionality.
2. The updates are two types:
# Official, these are over the air and you will find notifications in the notification area to tell you that there is a new update, or may be through kies for Samsung.
# Unofficial, which is basically flashing other ROMs whether official or custom.
# As for Android 3.0 (which is called honeycomb), it is not officially coming to the Tab. May be after the 3.2 announced a couple of days ago, but I still don't think so. Still, you might want to follow this thread as there are trials to get it fully working on the Tab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122959
3. I don't have any idea about this, as I got mine used and then I rooted and flashed it the day I got it.
4. Of course there are themes for the Android. This Overcome I was telling you about has a Gold theme. There are a lot of ways to get themes on the Tab. I myself use different home launchers with different themes. You don't need to flash anything if you are just looking to change the looks of your device. Check this out and let me know if you like it:
Go Launcher EX https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex&feature=search_result
There are a lot other but this is my favorite. You can even change the fonts of the display.
5. The most common used tips and tweaks that you should use is over-clocking/ under-volting which gives you more speed and less battery drainage.
As for the apps, these are my favorites:
Tango, Photfunia, ezPDF reader, Movies (or IMDB), Springpad (or Catch), File Expert, Go Launcher, Go weather, Google Goggles, Google Shopper, Just reader, Splashtop, Plex, GrooveIP. I guess there are more on my device but these are the ones that I found more functional and fun to use.
Hope this helps...
Thanks rangercaptain,
Hey ahmadshawki, thanks so much, I will check out all of your suggestions, does overcome comes with Gingerbread?
Yes it does.

Any 2.2 rom is froyo (frozen yogurt).
Any 2.3 rom is gingerbread.
You can have either "flavor". They are both in the development section. Both are highly recommended.
Hi guys,
I've been visiting this forum for more than 6 months now, but I think this is my first post. I have a T-Mobile SGH-T849 GT-P1000.
Last year I unlocked it and changed it to a Gingerbread Euro. Below is the current setup:
Firmware version 2.3.3
Baseband version P1000XXJPZ
Kernel version 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1
Tab has been working fine, with the exception of:
- often does not remember wi-fi hotspots automatically, need to switch off/on wi-fi to do this
- 3G & phone works erratically. I don't use it as a phone, but those times that I tried I noticed the phone would loose connectivity to the mobile network and needed a reboot in order to fix it.
I'd like to upgrade it to Ginger 2.3.6, but which rom should I use? I checked on the forum, but I'm not sure if I should use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380595&page=3
or any other.
Is my modem correct or should I use this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902323&page=4
to install JL5 modem?
Sorry for the noob questions.
I have a galaxy tab 7+ sgh-t869 I need to chance my build prop in order to play order and chaos online it doesn't support operating system I have no idea how to chance it or what to change it to please help thanks

[Q] Galaxy Tab OTG capabilities

Can anyone make a flashable zip from these sources ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233072
sztupy made a port for i9000 and users report it's working so if it was originally ment for P1000, why isn't there any recent kernell with this (great) stuff implemented in it ?
I am new to developing kernels and am trying to do this very thing. I am porting the changes into jt1134's kernel from rootzwiki for my device. This is a CDMA ICS kernel. I am running into some issues though. Wish me luck.
I wish you as much luck as you need. Please make a GSM version of your port, if you can.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium

In fact the changes are very chipsets specific. sztupy made it for a Galaxy S, but the Galaxy S Plus use a different one, and the Galaxy Tab 7" too, I guess. So does it for the GT 8.9 and 10.1 (Tegra 2 inside. ^^).
So we need all the specifications and the pins out depending if used with a "hacked" OTB Cable or the OTG Dongle from GT 8.9 and 10.1. So not so easy... ^^
At least this have been integrated in the the CM9 ICS ROM and kernel version. I have seen this was working a hacked OTG cable, but don't know yet if it's working with the official Samsung Dongle.
If any one have this dongle can test it and report back ?
Can't do it myself as I lost mine for some months already and can't retrieve it...

Hacked OTG cable - you mean that somebody had done it?
Hm...one guy tried - but it was unsuccesful(
but probably it has to be done from application - usb-host mode?

[Q] cifs.ko module for P7320

Hello,
I'm looking for module for my GT-P7320 to be able to mount remote drives, if I'm not mistaken my GT needs only cifs.ko. Does anyone already compiled it?
I couldn't find it anywhere... As I have heard P7320 model is not that popular yet thats why there isn't much custom roms nor modules
If no one have this module compiled already, could someone at least give me a hint how to compile it? (i will share it afterwards of course )
just in case additional information:
model number: GT-P7320
Baseband version: P7320XXLB3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11-perf [email protected] #2
Thanks in advance
Stigi
I found this for the Acer A500, but it's for kernel 2.6.36.3, worth a try I guess
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058713
I have the P7300 and used this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468498 from the GT 10.1 forum. Also I used ES File explorer in stead of the Android SDK to create the folders and copy in the file.
Hope this helps.
thanks for the replay, but none of this works with my GT :/ just in case tried all of above (I'm kinda desperate) with no luck.
As far as I know none of P7300/P7310 modules will work with P7320 because it have different source or sth like that.
EDIT: oh and I'm trying to load this module using insmod and I'm getting "Exec format error", I assume that its coz of a difference in kernel, right?

[Q] Lapdock and Cyanogenmod

Hello!
Did someone run a Lapdock 100 on something other than Stock Rom?
I would like to use Lapdock on some Cyanogenmod in resolution of 1366x768 (I run in 960x540 on C11 ...)
I find a patch allows you to use the Lapdock Cyanogenmod 10, but I did not find this version of CyanogenMod (are 10.1 and above)
Maybe someone managed to run the Lapdock with CyanogenMod?
