AT&T users of Galaxy Note - I was able to remedy the tablet issue!!! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
After reading posts and complaints about the Galaxy Note being flagged as a tablet in AT&T's systems, I set out on a mission to fix this erroneous error. I contacted the President of AT&T and heard back from the Vice President. After several phone conversations later, the Director of Marketing was able to identify the error and fix this issue resulting in Note IMEI's to appear as smartphones, not tablets.
In short, buy the Note, put your SIM in, and your good to go. No issues with accusatory tablet texts. Here is the message I received (names redacted)
**********
I just spoke with our supply chain team and we figured out the issue – a digit was transposed when we loaded in a set of IMEI TAC ranges to our systems in October and this resulted in classifying a subset of Samsung Galaxy Note products erroneously. Your IMEI range was not impacted and your product will work without issue and without concern of losing your unlimited smartphone data plan experience.
To be clear, you have not actually received any “alerts” from AT&T about data plan eligibility because you have not moved your SIM card into the Samsung Galaxy Note product as of yet? You can do so without issue at this time.
***********
So, I'm not one to take credit, but I sure did take this issue to the top of AT&T and it all appears to be well.
Great news for us Note users in the US. AT&T know knows it's not a tablet.
Enjoy the best device ever!
Eric
EDIT: It seems my solution didn't necessarily remedy all Galaxy Notes. That said, you may still encounter issues. If you do, I'd recommend contacting AT&T for help. I seem to be good for now, but still feel I will get flagged at some point. Unfortunate, really, but that's par for the course given the unique nature of this device. AT&T can't seem to classify it as a tablet or smartphone, when it's clearly a smartphone with a slightly bigger screen.

Thank you! Is there a reference number or of the sort which we can reference to just in case the 'text of horror' or any issues occur by any chance?

One point of caution: he said "my IMEI range has not been affected." I have no idea if that means my Note, which was from Germany, is any different than a Polish one or otherwise.
The best thing to do is if you get a text from AT&T about a tablet plan, contact the highest executive you can and be very professional (it's easy to find emails). This issue can be fixed as evidenced by my post.
Good luck!
Out of respect for the individuals who helped me, I'd rather not post their information all over the web. Just google for AT&T executive email addresses if you run into trouble and go from there. Remember, if you do contact someone, please be professional in your communications. *****ing will get you nowhere.

Great. I will do so! how do you check the nationality of your GN? I just ordered it from Amazon, so I am not sure where it will be from.

FWIW, mine from Amazon was German. Outside of that, they are sourced from all over, so I can't help beyond that.

Just to be clear what happens if I call AT&T up and have them put my IMIE number in. Will it now be accepted by AT&T and will I then have the proper APN sent to my phone automatically without having to put it in manually? Has anyone done this now? Thanks for getting this straightened out it sure takes a lot of pressure off everyone.

You don't need to call AT&T, just put your sim card in your Note. No matter what you do, I don't think you can make the network automatically provision your international Note with the correct APN settings, you'll have to do it manually. It's very easy to do, though.
Excellent news that they have fixed the issue with the IMEI # error in their database!

Thanks Eric!
Now has anyone that got blocked before put their SIM back in and using it? I am still a little worried because the email didn't say that they changed anything, only that yours was ok. I will wait a couple days until i get my TMo SIM in the mail; then if they shut me off again at least I can go to TMo edge. Right now I'm using my N1 and tethering it, but the idea of the Note is so I only have to carry one device.

Soooo...this is for all of us? If so, you're a hero man, seriously.

That's awesome Eric. I have a Note on the way that I was resigned to returning because of this issue. It's a Christmas miracle!
Eric - what APN are you using? Phone, PTA or wap. Cingular?

I do believe it will "fix" all Note IMEI issues, but that's my assumption.

Wap.cingular is only for 3g speeds. If you want the "4g" speeds use "phone" as your apn and make sure your 4g data is enabled on your account.

Thanks Eric.
Another question. I am using an older, I'm sure 3G SIM. I've seen references to a 4G SIM. Will substituting a 4G SIM for the 3G SIM -- I'm already on a metered $G Smartphone plan -- make any difference re obtaining HSPA+ speeds?

Awesome
That's great news. It's such great news I decided to order the phone from Amazon. And it's arriving tomorrow!
Earlier in the day I went to a local AT&T store here in NYC and had a long talk with a sales rep. He told me there was no reason why it should not work and that he would exchange my iPhones sim for the right size. I explained to him all the issues and he said if it's not a tablet there should be no problem. I'm glad the higher ups at AT&T agreed with him.

Glad to hear you had your issue taken care of. Hopefully you didn't screw all the note medianet users over in the process...

First of all, if you are using the Note on that plan, you are out of compliance.
Second of all, if you are spending $700 on a device, get a piggy bank and save $15 more each month to finance your data plan.
Third of all, that's a pretty jerky comment. I didn't do all of this as a self-serving prophecy. I merely wanted AT&T to recognize it as a smartphone, not a tablet. For everyone, not just me. Nobody cares that you and others are skirting policy by sneaking a data-heavy phone onto an old medianet plan.
You are working the system and frankly I hope you get caught.

Agreed on all counts!

so has anyone checked their at&t account online to see what device it shows as being used? wondering as to if it's showing something different now.

Eric for the past 7 years I've used unlocked unbranded phones on at&t. When I insert my at&t SIM into my unlocked unbranded phone OLAM's only option for data was the 10/15$ medianet plan. How am I skirting the system if AT&T's online account manager is telling me to select medianet for data?
Should I call at&t up and tell them I want to pay more money for data? Tell me how to proceed?

I don't care how you proceed. All I know is my Note isn't viewed as a tablet any longer.
Outside of that good luck with whatever you have set up. It's not my concern.

[Q] Possible to use AT&T Tablet Data Only Sim on Captivate?

I plan on visiting an AT&T store this week to see if I can get one of the data-only tablet sims for use with my captivate. Am I barking up the wrong tree here? These would be the type of sims used in things like the Galaxy Tab, etc. I could get by using VOIP if I could save a couple bucks a month. $25 for 2gb should do me just fine. I'm just not sure if they'd let me do it.
success! the kind folks at AT&T had no qualms with giving me the 2GB data plan for my captivate. they had to get a legit tablet serial number from the back room to activate the Sim, but all went very smoothly. only problem I see now is that the mobile internet service is horrifically slow. is it possible that i'm not configured to male use of the full 3g capacity of this thing? speedtests are coming in at about 30kbps.
edit: nevermind. 3g kicked in after a few minutes.
here's my configuration for getting the $25 2gb tablet plan working on my unlocked captivate.

Is there a way we can do this without going to a at&t store? My town doesn't have one. Just buy a tablet sim online directly from AT&T?
I'm not sure, but I tend to doubt it. The guy at the AT&T store had to activate the Sim using a serial number he obtained from an unopened tablet box in the back room (very awesome of him to do so). Normally I think you can activate Sims directly from your device, but in this case it would read the model of your phone and fail to activate. I'm still half expecting to hear from AT&T in the near future telling me my device is ineligible for this type of service, but so far so good.

[Q] spoof IMEI and using Unlimited data plan on AT&T?

I am thinking to move my cell phone carrier from Verizon to AT&T since I got Galaxy Note. I am thinking to get 450 minute voice plan + unlimited messaging + unlimited data. I am a noob about those things, so I searched for it almost a week.
Here is my understanding.
1. IMEI number is ID of cell phone. Every cell phone has its unique IMEI number.
2. Carrier (AT&T) only has database of IMEI numbers of their cell phones which they sell.
3. Applier only need IMEI number when open an account at the AT&T.
4. AT&T cannot detect IMEI number when people use AT&T network.
5. AT&T can detect the speed that people use.
6. The Galaxy Note will work on AT&T HSDPA 850/1900 bands.
Here is what I am planning to do.
1. Buy an unlock dumb phone from ebay which supports HSDPA 850/1900 (ex. Samsung A927 Flight II).
2. Get a 450 minute voice plan, unlimited messaging, and unlimited data for non-Smartphones plan with ebay phone (ex. Samsung A927 Flight II).
3. After the ebay phone is activated, pop SIM card in Galaxy Note.
4. Configure APN on Galaxy Note.
Do you guys think it works? Or any other recommendation?
Pls let me know. Thank you!!
I'm on ATT
They no longer offer the unlimited data plan.
But otherwise your plan would work
I have unlimited ATT only because i'm a legacy user. And i have a dumbphone unlimited data plan which i use with the gNote on ATT
They will sweep the smartphones on dumphone plan once in a while. But there's a way around it.
Search ebay for ppl selling sim cards with unlimited data plans on ATT (not sure if such things even exist for sale)

Thank you. I know that they don't have unlimited data plan for smartphone anymore. what I am trying to do is using non-smart phone data plan for Galaxy note. It is the only way I can get unlimited data plan if I can spoof ATT.
The only unlimited att sim you can get is getting unlimited gophone. Which doesnt require a contract. 60$ / month all unlimited. Lots of ppl are using it.
Again, no unlimited data plans on a contrac from att. Only prepaid gophone sim cards

how's the speed on att prepaid plan? I cant find it on their site. I think for T-mobile, they cap your speed down to edge after the first 200 or 250mb usage of 4G.
I am getting out of a contract with att soon, and planning to switch to a gophone plan. Can I carry my old number over?

I was told this would work using their GoPhone plans, and as mentioned some people here are using it. However, I was also told that "unlimited" isn't really "unlimited" in this case, that there's an expectation of how much data a non-smartphone would use on this plan (since it's designed for non-smartphones). Basically, it'll work as long as you don't get too carried away on the data side, in which case "unlimted" will become "capped" or "cutoff."
I was on the verge of terminating my att contract and find something better.
Sprint is the only true unlimited provider that offers 4g lte service and cheaper than verizon.
Att gophone is a good option too. Not for a family plan (which i'm interested in)
Staying with att for now with a dumbphone unlimited plan using gNote until my contract expires and will probablyove to sprint.
Tmobile will throttle you down if you have hivh usage.
I use about 12-15gb a month so tmob is not an option.

What I checked ATT.com, unlimited GoPhone plan is $50.
I think this one can be another option (Nation 450 w/Rollover® Minutes $39.99 + Messaging & Data Unlimited for Non-Smartphones $30.00).
Someone said coverage is different goPhone and other plans.

I believe the only difference in coverage is due to the different APNs they use. Don't take my word for that though.

Is this true? I didn't think it was, and required you to spoof your IMEI in your modem firmware or via a TurboSIM or something similar. Where's your source for this?

I think it's wrong. Though they may not see the whole IMEI, they see enough to detect your phone model, which is enough for them to decide dumbphone/smartphone.
When i log into my ATT profile, i can see the handset i'm using on top of the page which is determined by IMEI ( i think)

Though i've seen ppl using the "pta" and "phone" apns, i was never able to access with those.

Thank you so much. You are the life saver. If I buy the SIM from ebay, can I transfer my number from Verizon?
Hmm, that's a tough one. I'm pretty sure it only applies when switching carriers on a contract. You can't have 2 devices on different carriers and use the same number. You may need to cancel your contract with verizon. I'd call ATT or Verizon to confirm that. (sorry if this sounds dumb)
======================================
Who should consumers contact if they want to port their number to a new carrier?
Consumers should contact their prospective new carrier, who will start the porting process. The new carrier will first confirm the consumer's identity and then make a porting request of the old carrier. When consumers go to their new carrier to port a number, they should bring along a recent bill, which will have their correct name and address as it appears in the carrier’s database. This should aid in making the porting process go smoothly. Once a valid porting request has been made, the old carrier cannot refuse to port a number.

Straight Talk is actually an MNVO (mobile network virtual operator) that runs on the AT&T towers, so any AT&T device is compatible on a basic level. You will need to change the apn for data access. I think it is att.mnvo or something similar. I have read that your data speeds will likely be throttled to a lower speed. If data speed is important, you may also want to check to see if you will have access to LTE and/or HSPA+ networks.

Thanks for the EXCELLENT reply. That was extremely helpful. I do have a couple followup questions.
Straight Talk is accepting T-Mo phones as well. Would those also run off the AT&T network still?
Also, she alleges that she doesn't have AT&T service where she lives. She is currently using a Wal-Mart purchased Straight Talk flip phone. Can someone explain that???

Yes, so they would have to be network unlocked. Also, since T-MO and AT&T have some differences in frequency bands and data transmission protocols for high speed, most T-MO phones won't be able to access high speed data.

I have read that AT&T and T-MO have roaming agreements for voice (not sure about data) and that these agreements only apply for monthly plans, not pay as you go. It could be that the monthly plan MNVO users also have the benefit of the roaming? If you are curious, ask her to check her network settings and it should indicate if she is connected to at&t/smart talk or if it is t-mo. Since it is covered under agreement, I don't know if it shows up as a roaming status on the main screen. Assuming she is correct about the AT&T thing to begin with...

Right now, she's just using an old dumb phone her parents picked up from Walmart, so information is limited at best. Doubly so since I'm in Tennessee and she's in Alabama.

Model
Do you have the model and brand of the phone she is using?
If it is AT&T Sim from Straight Talk will operate on ATT towers. If it is TMO sim will operate on T-Mobile towers.
If her area is not covered by T-MO or ATT, then she may be using a Straight Talk CDMA phone which could run on another provider like Verizon.
I have the Vivid with Sraight Talk and no problems. I do have an issue sending MMS messages, which is an issue with my phone (I switched the SIM to a Galaxy and to HTC Inspire and I was able to send MMS).
Does anybody know why? (I'm using the APN recommended by Straight Talk).
To clarify a few things: I too have Straight Talk on my brothers Vivid with. Att SIM. I do NOT suggest getting a Tmo SIM. Reception is awfull if you aren't in a large city. Also you can NOT roam the ATT towers with the Tmo SIM. Data Speeds are NOT throttled at all and I regularly hit 700-1000KB dl or 6-8megs however you calculate. Straight Talk will throttle you if you repeatedly use over 2GB of data a month buy for 45$ a month you can't lose. Hope this helps
Vivid and MMS?
Nate,
Are you able to send MMS messages with your Vivid?
I'm able to connect to Internet and make calls. I configured the APN correctly and I still can't send MMS. If I switch my SIM to any other phone, I'm able to send MMS. Any idea on this?
Thanks!!
PS. And yes, $45 per month is awesome!
Hi gifr, yes mms works perfectly. It may be an issue with your Rom, your Texting App, or an apn setting. That's the only thing I think it could be.
I have been thinking of doing this with NET10 which it is my understanding is the same thing as Straight Talk and works with both AT&T and T-Mobile towers.
Is the data really unlimited or are you slowed down after a certain amount?
Does Visual Voicemail work?
Can specified only for AT&T and T-Mobile apps be installed and used?
Visual voice mail doesn't work on my vivid but everything else does.

Like if I could get everything but VisualVoicemail working that'd be amazing...
The device is an HTC VIVID, currently running PACman ROM...
PLEASE, any/all help is greatly appreciated. He really needs his phone working again...
Thank you all...

That is a depreciated APN... You wanna use the 'phone' or 'pta'...
You'll have data drops and places where MMS won't send with that

FWIW these are the settings currently supplied with the AT&T 4G enabled SIMs that Straight Talk has just begun selling. Work fine on a S4 Google edition.

Smartphone plans that work with N7 3g

We have a thread going about what doesn't work with the N7 3g. How about keeping a list of what actually does work? I won't make a list of data only plans because that is a given. I am talking about smartphone plans with minutes and sms as well as data. I will edit the list and try to make myself useful. I am hoping that a few of the prepaid plans will work on the t-mobile/at&t networks despite the blocking when purchased from the carrier.
USA
Working
1. Straight talk AT&T and T-Mobile
2. Simple Mobile
3. AT&T grandfather unlimited plan with APN changes (Quoted below) Thanks DonS

1. All T-mobile smartphone plans
2. AT&T LTE smartphone postpaid plans. (May be APN related)

right before you write this post, brandotgreat wrote StraightTalk works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004849
If this thread is meant to be USA specific, please indicate so in the title.
If not I will just hazard a guess: The N7 should work on *all* CDN smartphone plans because AFAIK none of the carriers here do punitive device screening. The only caveat is you would have to put in the smartphone APN if the tablet APN is the default. But if anyone has a counterexample please do make it known. (Of course the voice side won't work unless/until devs figure out how.)
UK - T-Mobile standard pay as you go Sim works. I'm using it now.
StraightTalk's T-mobile SIM works.
I'm using it now. Good Speeds too..
My cousin is using SIMPLE Mobile on his N7.
It a MVNO using T-mobile network. It has a $50 Unlimited Plan.
No Data Cap from what he told me.
I read over the T&C and it seems pretty good.
Just no P2P Downloading, Running a Server, "automatic data feeds"
Oh and no Tethering (stated in T&C)
It says they reserve the right to Throttle or Terminate your service if you break any of the T&C rules.
But nothing about a Data Cap.
Don't have good Coverage though (at least the coverage map they have sucks)
I will keep a list for any country if it is helpful. Thanks for the input thus far.

Umm, StraightTalk mvno via Verizon is CDMA based (No SIM) (although SOME of their phones have SIM) - Nexus7 Does not Support CDMA
I Think you meant T-mobile.
That UK entry should be T-mobile (Orange) and not Verizon.
AT&T SIM with iPhone data plan works
I put a SIM from an iPhone with the iPhone unlimited data plan into my N7 3G and it's working perfectly. I did have to create a new APN with the old wap.cingular APN. That is likely required for other AT&T SIMs with non-LTE data plans. If the SIM is setup with an LTE data plan it should work with the Broadband APN that comes predefined.
Someone trying an AT&T SIM should create an APN with these settings. I believe the username and password entries are case sensitive, so make sure you enter them as all caps.

Wow...I can't believe I typed Verizon. No sleep and a head cold got the better of me. Crazy since I have just been integrating responses from this thread into the top post. I also tried to take my contact lenses out this morning.....they weren't in. Makes me nervous about what I'm typing into my report at the office right now. haha.
T-Mobile
So I just bought a Nexus 7 32GB with HSPA+ and came to know that T-Mobile smartphone plans don't work on this device.
WTF?
Is there something I need to do get it to work? Like Root it?
If it won't work even with root enabled then I think this device is going to have to go back to Google.
thanks
C
What I've gathered from other threads is that T-Mobile have blocked the IMIE numbers of all the nexus 3g devices, effectively forcing people to use tablet only plans.
Others will probably confirm, but truth be told, probably best to use another carrier.

Does anyone know of a plan that is pre paid and offers the pay per day option as T mobiles? There plan was basically $3 a day that you used it. I don't use the data connection that much but want the option when I need it. Most of the time I can tether to my phone but there are those bad battery days when it would be nice to their out the $3 instead of not having service.
The ATT Mobile Data Share plan works if you add as a tablet. Its only $10 to add N7 3G to your share plan,

Just to clarify, did you have to cut down the Straight Talk Sim to Micro size? They only seem to offer the T-Mobile Sim in standard Sim card size.
A dumb question: what is a straight talk plan? Unlimited minutes one with or without data?
Thanks!

For those who want Tmobile 3g/HSPA on their Vivid... Free..

I got it on mine.
I was trying to do S-OFF but couldn't get the damn screw on the back off that covers the pin you need for the wire trick.
So I decided I'd try getting it through the unlock code. Was looking for the cheapest way when I came across this site.
I AM NOT TRYING TO ADVERTISE FOR THIS SITE. NOT AFFILIATED IN ANY WAY. SIMPLY TRYING TO HELP.
https://www.freeunlocks.com/
NOTICE. YOU NEED A CREDIT CARD. I'M SORRY. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY. IT IS FREE HOWEVER.
So I went in and chose the HTC Vivid and chose to get it free with "Trialpay". I read some of the "offers" and googled about them, and the Emusic one is the easiest to cancel. So I signed up for it using my debit card, FREE TRIAL, then sure enough it went through and asked me for my IMEI. I input it, it said thanks please wait a few. About 10-15 minutes later I get an email "Your unlock code is ready, it is #########".
Pop in my Tmobile sim on STOCK HTC ICS and asks for unlock key - put it in and BLAMMO. IT. WORKED.
So then I go to emusic.com and go to account page and cancel my account. completely. Also I emailed their customer support to say "I want to make sure my account is COMPLETELY canceled and I will NOT be charged" and they confirmed it is as such.
Now, I can see the 4G icon on the top right, but I'm not actually getting any data. Calling/texting worked though. I'm thinking maybe it needed some APN settings, I have no idea. Not worried about it.
I used to use Virtuous Inquisition so I flashed back to it.
Pop in TMobile SIM and had to reenter unlock code, which worked again.
Went to settings and chose the TMobile carrier under the settings... Blammo. 3g. Working. What's that? There's an H up there! NO WAY!
Opened up speedtest and ran it. Guess what... 10mbps. The top right shows 3g but I get H about 50% of the time (just the fault of spotty coverage indoors, not because the phone isn't capable.)
Image will be attached.
You don't have to believe me, you don't have to give out your credit card info, nothing, I just wanted to try and help anyone I can.
Good luck and have fun

I believe the vivid and other Att phones have been getting up to H (fake 4G) speeds for a while now because T-Mobile recently added some more frequencies for their towers a month or two ago

In case you still need help, here is what I suggest:
For the unlock, use unlockusa.com to get your code. They're the fastest and most reliable on the market.
For the internet, use the following settings for your APN (Credits: http://htcsource.com/2012/08/how-to-sim-unlock-the-htc-vivid-and-add-t-mobiles-access-point/) :

Enjoy your cool phone !
I hope that helps. It worked for me, as I was having the same issue.
