[MOD by APP] Nebtop - Universal HDMI Webtop hack - Atrix 4G Android Development

This MOD by APP is different than the existing MOD by replacing system apks:
1. No risk of brick
2. Ease of use
3. Universal hack for phones and ROMs that has Webtop
Since this app is intended to support multiple devices, see the original post from the Razr thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404625 .
Please report the test result in this thread. Whether success or fail and your device, ROM, etc.
It'd be nice to use the "Send" option in the app if it failed.
Thanks!

Your link is wrong, it should be: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php? t=1404625
EDIT: Oh and there's already a hack to do webtop through HDMI for the atrix, if the thread you posted does something different you should explain more since the OP of that thread does not say that much. What is HD Dock and how would the Atrix have it?

Ow!! Posting on mobile is troublesome
Thanks for your comments! It's very enlightening!

I highly recommend this app. No flashing. No rebooting. I wanted to show my siblings some SNL clips on hulu but I only use my Webtop with the lapdock. I was dreading having to download and extract those two dock and portal apps and changing permissions and ownership. But with this app, all I had to do was download it, install, grant su, plug in the hdmi connected to tv, and press load. My desktop appeared on the screen instantly and the quality was outstanding.
I'm so proud of my phone. Seeing the actualization of one of the most innovative and unique features of this phone was and is immensely rewarding. Motorola is on to something. The future is bright.

If you actually read what the OP posted and the link given you would know the difference!

It works!

Tried this on a fresh install of 2.3.6 from Fruitcakes thread. Everything is working amazing. Better than any previous hack/mod. I had fullscreen landscape going (basically mirroring in webtop), printer selection, Firefox 8, etc.
There are settings selectable which I haven't seen before such as screensavers, and other stuff. (Doesn't mean they weren't there before...........I just hadn't seen them on any previous hacks).

Does your fullscreen landscape mirroring work without lags when playing a game?

He is the one that alerted me to have the OP revised to contain more details and the difference to the existing MOD.
Without him I won't revise the OP that is what you see now. Hehe

There's landscape mirroring working without lag in this build? OMG
Also, is it easily uninstallable by uninstalling the apk installed? Thanks.

Unfortunately, no. This one is just trick, emulation, that Atrix think that is connected to dock.

worked perfectly on stock (rooted with oneclickroot) UK T mobile atrix running 2.3.4
Thanks for the pointer. Cheers

when i click load nothing happens can someone help me?
Edit: sent info and it said my faux kernel is not supported. What kernel can I flash to make it work?
I am on gingermod 3 with faux 1ghz
Edit: got it but does it work on a laptop because i have no choice to go to webtop

The HDMI on laptop should be an output port instead of input port I guess?

That makes sense. But it does show up at a media device. I can play music through HDMI. Which I thought was weird.

EDIT: got it to work on my monitor. but couldn't open anything other then my phone. i have the Debian hack installed could that be the cause of the problem. i am currently wait for my lapdock charger to get here to i can test it out.

Ok i have a problem with this application.
I'm using gingermod 4, and every time i emulate the dock the media center works fine, but when i launch webtop it will load but my touchscreen and touch buttons on the phone go unresponsive till i unplug the HDMI cable
Any solutions?

It sounds like Photon 4G's stock ROM bug - having an unresponsive trackpad on the phone. Is Gingermod 4 based on Photon 4G's ROM or somehow has the same bug as it?
A temporary solution is to remove the dalvik cache of some apks. For example, removing the DockService and PortalApp's dalvik cache and reboot will solve this problem on Photon 4G.

I think he meant to say to clear those apps in the dalvik cache; I wish he'd be more precise and detailed in his answer. I do NOT know how to clear each app in the dalvik cache; I know how to clear the whole dalvik cache in CWM, but to clear each app???

[Rom][Port] xXBabiboi228Xx{Manila Carbon Fiber 2.2™} from EVO *UPDATED 1/21*

I'm making this thread to avoid confusion now that there is a working port.
Well just heard back from xxbabiboi228xx and trock79 apparently will be using parts of his rom in the future, but until then.
Here is my port, everything seems to work and I do not intend on maintaining this. Hope this works out for anyone who wants it.
This is a straight port of xxbabiboi228xx's rom! I did not have anything to do with the development of this rom and take no credit for doing so, only for making it work on the inc.

http://www.multiupload.com/JGRRQM38KZ
build 2
http://www.multiupload.com/8N9XY7CHPN
build 3
http://www.multiupload.com/FWNZYAQB6T
Changlog:
build 2:
Cleaned up the sprint stuff and added the gingerbread keyboard. Htc keyboard still there by default. Also added the htc lock screen back with an optional download for the vanilla lockscreen in the first post. You can try a flash over and it should work, but I recommend a full wipe, quite a bit was changed. Let me know if flash over works out if you try. Trimmed 10mb's off.
build 3:
Updated to new host rom (xxbabiboi228xx' 2.4) Changed battery indicator to vertical green with percentage (gingerbread style). Theme changed a little bit here and there.
Integrated rosie right key setting (internet icon still present after change) and notification toggle widget changer (PowerControl settings)
No more bootloop on first boot (you don't have to wait to see the lockscreen twice anymore)
New clean and simple bootanimation, very nice in my opinion
bugs known:
4g settings and sprint apps are still present
Other than that, nothing else that I know of
I have tested:
browser
phone
mms and sms
wifi
bluetooth
gps
market
camera with flash
camcorder (720)
mail and facebook sync
Just to be clear I do not intend to maintain this rom. If anyone else wants to take over from here, great! Its a really nice looking rom for sure. I only did this because it was requested and I liked the look of it. The rom runs great, check it out!

Again, thank you so much for your hard work, and the hard work of BabiBoi! Also the upcoming support from trock79!

@synisterwolf: Doesn't say Sprint for me, that is, if you meant the Operator Name/Logo. As br125 mentioned though, the Sprint apps should be present in the ROM. I hope that answers your question?
@Lsdozer: The easy answer to your question is, edit the file called, widget.txt, to your liking.
The file resides in system\customize I believe.
Unfortunately, the tool br125 posted, is only for the Cyanogen ROMs I think. And for the life me, I have been unable to effectively change that text file, using Root Explorer, ES Explorer, and SUManager. People swear that this is the easiest task to take care of, but for me, I have tried it all, when trying to edit from within the phone, and nothing has worked. If you consider editing the file on your computer and push it to your phone, one thing to consider is that I read somewhere that the file has to have a UNIX signature on it, for it to work. This is the reason why I was adamant to try to edit the file, while it was on my phone, well... that and because I have no idea how to push files using ADB or something to my phone... Hope this helps, please let me know if it works for you. If it does, please post what you did, thanks!
On separate notes guys, does anyone know how to restore haptic feedback to the lockscreen, when unlocking? The original ROM came with the Sense the lockscreen, as default, but I believe br125's port defaults to the Vanilla lockscreen.
Other things we can think about is:
1. Figuring out which kernels are working out well on the ROM, since it has now been ported to the Incredible.
2. Maybe getting that Gingerbread keyboard on here ?
Thanks once again to br125, Babiboi, and, trock79 as well!
I will take a look at gettin haptic working for you, i took out the htclockscreen when I ported it and forgot to add it back in. xxbabiboi228xx said that he will be releasing 2.4 tonight most likely and I'll have some free time tomorrow that I could possibly add in his changes/fixes.
As for kernels, any inc. sense kernel will (should) work. ie. incredikernel, heyitslou's kernel etc.
I've flashed Lou's kernel and it works great, I'm currently at 77% and been using it off the charger for about 7 hours or so
edit: the notification toggles shouldn't be hard to get the 4g outta there and add more useful things and I'll put the gingerbread keyboard in there if it works when I take a look at it. Basically I wanna clean up all the sprint leftovers and make it not seem like a port

BTW, I tried getting some of the GB keyboard flashed over into the ROM, from the forum. Maybe it's my luck, but I have never actually gotten a single keyboard flashed successfully through to recovery. Whether it was the EVO or the DInc, same results...
This was no exception of course ...

[Q] What features would you like to see in a rom for your thrill?

Just to get used to the android OS dev side I am going to attempt to blend Meego/Maemo features with android. I will be using the V10k firmware as a basis.
I'm curious as to features you may wish to see in a rom. My main goals are:
Tri-screen functionality: Custom home, Apps, Running apps (Similair to Meego)
Customizable folders for the app screen
Onestop Keyboard (Swype, switch between qwerty and T9/numeric style)
3d functionality remaining
Possible Debian install
Removal of ALL spare apps. If it isn't required, it's gone.
EDIT:
Possible extra features
Option to uninstall apps from app screen via long press.
Option to hide/lock apps
EDIT (Final):
PROGRESS: Android is a surpisingly easy OS to work on and there is a LOT of devel to look at in terms of starting points for coding. I currenty have a debian distro runningwith the android OS. Apt-get works fine, however there is not enough space install any application. This Rom may either be out very soon, or depending on memory issues my be impossible without relying on an SD.
Unlocked tether and wifi hot spot
I'm most concerned with battery longevity. Don't know if you'd call that a feature, but to me it's one of the most important parts.
Wish List for new ROM on LG Thrill
I love this Thrill, for the most part, but I wish that the Phone app, where you see the
Dial, Call Log, Contact and Groups, would work same way as the Stock Android does... basicaly, take out the Groups and put Favorits.
This Group to me is very slow every time I click on it takes 5 to 10 seconds to load.. and then I have to presse the Favorits... which I use the most... so..
Yes, I have about 1700 contacts on my list, but even with just a just contacts, this buttons GROÜPs is very slow.
Also, I wish that the Flash on teh 3D camera mode would work, because right now, only in 2D mode is that the Flash works... I think it is just a setting in some internal files or on the Camera apps that blocks the Flash when in Video or still pic.
Thanks and let us know if these changes are possible or not.
Ron
WIFI Unlock and tether: I belieive its been done on other roms so it should be no problem
Battery: I will see what I can do. The ROM will just be a bare bones OS so there should be very little to eat up the battery.
Contacts to favorites and camera flsh: I'll have to look into this and let you know.

There is a reason behind the flash not working during 3D. They blocked it because the light from the flash messes with the 3D camera. Sure this could be a feature still, just saying this doesn't work for a good reason.

I was actually thinking on waiting for the Gingerbread update before starting. The update should be coming anywhere between novemeber and the end of december.
If I wait, then it will give me a bit more time to get familiar with android as an OS andcome up with various way to get the maemo/meego/android mix feel just right. Progress has been fairly fast however. I'm still having memory issues with the debian however. Also, the UI get very buggy. I might just look into utilizing some outside programs.
How would you guys feel if I outed the stock home and keyboard and replaced it with someothing like GO launcher and keyboard?
As long as the keyboard has the speak to text capability, because although mines rooted with thriller, i don't like using swype just to have that option.. it should be on the default keyboards too.

The reboot option is actually a great idea Ill look into that, I probably will not have an undervolt OR even an overclock option as Im sure it will require a custom kernel. Kernel are something I rarely play with and when I do it's only a temp thing.

[MOD] HDMI Landscape Mirroring

This mod allows for mirroring in landscape mode using the MirrorService.apk from Photon. Output is scaled up from the native resolution up to 1080p if your display supports it.
I am still in the process of trying to better package this so it will not wreck havok on existing installs. Any updates will be posted here.
Flashing this will likely result in problems for you, so be warned, it's not for the faint of heart.
-you must wipe data
-restoring apps with TiBu will likely not work
-could possibly break market installs / updates
-this will NOT work on CM7
-webtop will not be available over HDMI
Here's a link to the CWM flashable zip:
http://96.126.112.115/HDMI-landscape-0.1.zip
I have personally tested this with Aura Rom 1.2.2.2 Deblur, but I have no reason to believe it won't work on other blur based roms.
Standard disclaimers apply-- Not responsible for data loss or if your phone catches fire etc.
Update 11/16/2011: It seems like this can be more reliably included in a rom vs. being added later due to the nature of how the mirror service works. I have successfully modified a version of Aura to include this and have been running it with much fewer issues over the past few days.
Method 2: This is the exact process I have used most recently. It resigns your entire rom to avoid any signature mismatch related issues.
You will need:
Apk Manager
A copy of your ROM zip file
a program to modify the contents of the zip (WinRAR, 7zip, etc.)
HDMI-landscape-FilesOnly-Atrix.zip containing all the files needed to get mirroring working
Instructions:
1. Extract Apk Manager to a folder somewhere
2. Extract all the apks from your ROM (/system/app for most, Aura has these in /debloat/app), be sure to include /system/framework/framework-res.apk and the provided MirrorService.apk, to the "place-apk-here-for-signing" folder where you extracted Apk Manager.
3. Delete all the apk's in the "place-apk-here-for-signing" folder that should not be resigned. (Music.apk, Maps.apk, Superuser.apk, Gmail.apk, Youtube.apk, etc)
4. run Script.bat in the Apk Manager folder and run option 16.
5. Drag all the apks you just re-signed back inside your ROM zip file to overwrite the existing files. (don't forget that framework-res.apk needs to go in the /system/framework folder)
6. Copy the remaining needed files inside the HDMI-landscape-FilesOnly-Atrix.zip to their corresponding location in your ROM zip. /system/lib/ & /system/framework need the following files:
/system/framework/com.motorola.android.iextdispservice.jar
/system/framework/com.motorola.android.imirrorservice.jar
/system/framework/com.motorola.android.inativehdmiapis_v1.jar
/system/lib/libmirrrorjni.so
/system/lib/hw/overlay.tegra.so
7. You can now flash your modified ROM image!
This method will leave you with a working Webtop if your ROM already included the option to allow webtop over HDMI.
Be warned, using the webtop will very likely cause the mirroring to malfunction until you reboot your phone. As long as you don't use the webtop in a given boot, the mirroring works great.
Will you post your version of Aura with the mirroring enabled? or will you wait for diviance to update aura?

great job mate, just wondering if webtop over hdmi still works with your modified apk? i read the other thread a bit but didnt really find a conclusive answer. thanks
Nice finding Starrwarrior! Just CWM flashed hdmi-landscape.0.1.zip on my atrix and still can't believe HDMI landscape mirroring works Even if it's at a lower res than 720p You just made my cellphone one hell of a of awesome purchase !
Since I got a day off today, I'll try the resigning method on the alienv4 rom and hope that in the end, webtop over HDMI, HDMI landscape mirroring, webtop2sd AND weptopscripts can all coexist on atrix with this rom.
One question though: do you mind if you list every apk (except for Music.apk, Maps.apk, Superuser.apk, Gmail.apk, Youtube.apk) you excluded from resigning please ? Even though it's from a different rom, I am taking a shot through the dark here lol.

Those are the only Google Apps that I know of that generally get updated. As a rule of thumb, if it is updated via the market it would be a bad idea to re-sign it. Worst case scenario you can just adb push the original one back to your phone from your ROM's zip.
Totally awesome Starrwarrior!!!
Will try Method 2 on the first chance I have!
Cheers!
Rayan
Thanks for the feedback starrwarrior. Although I went ahead before looking at your post and avoided resigning MOST of the apks except the blur ones lol...
I can now confirm that modding alienv4 with your second method makes webtop over HDMI, HDMI landscape mirroring, webtop2sd and webtopscripts work altogether on my Bell Atrix (after fixing the RAM issue, but for me I had it only happen on the stock ATT gingerbread and the alienv4 rom; it didn't happen on CM7 BaT2). As long as webtop wasn't booted before using HDMI mirroring, it's smooth sailing for me.
(edited after further playing with modded alienv4 rom)
I realized I broke google market (no big deal, just reflashed old version of gapps) and every blur-related app (maybe a big deal because of the following sentence -_-)
I also broke ringtones/notifications (in settings --> sounds, phone doesn't detect ANYTHING and I can't assign ANY ringtones/notifications; I even tried RingDroid and Ring Commander and I get a FC every time...)
I'll admit I just blindly followed the 2nd method though.
(edited again after redoing starrwarrior second method of rom editing of alienv4)
I just ONLY EXCLUDED resigning gmail.apk, maps.apk, superuser.apk and youtube.apk. I resigned the rest of the apk in the alienv4 rom.
Now I have ringtones back and I can finally reassign them. Webtop over HDMI, webtop2sd, webtopscripts AND HDMI landscape mirroring (still at a lower res than 720p though) still work althogether. I'll play with this modified rom for a while and reediting my post after a few more days.
If all's well, I'll try to PM kennethpenn afterwards, even though I read that he doesn't have the time to support this rom anymore
You are the Atrix HDMI mirror GOD!
Is there any chance that this mod will be applicable to a stock ROM (preferably without completely wiping it) at some point or is it looking like this is pretty much what you will have to do?
S*** just got REAL!

Would be rad to see an all in one .zip to flash cheers man really appreciate the effort.
Incredible
Tried method 2 with Pi Crust .8 once, in a bit of a time crunch, but no go. Guessing didn't take all the correct app files out of /system/apps/. Took out one's in OP and couple more I thought fit the bill. I'll give it another shot soon before I set up my webtop.
Backed up and had darkside running just to smile and show the fellow co-working, android heads today. Thanks again for revamping the Atrix once more! I'll post Pi Crust if I get it working I suppose. Navalynt posted in it's OP that he kinda made it for stuff like this (though I'll double check and webtop/FP scanner always has worked well for me on it.
Has some used this in alien?
Does it work?

It just me or this awsome mod had a little downside: resourses consuming. It seems it slowdown phone a little. Specially poaying games. Play is good but not as fluid than playing only on the phone...
Thats strange, tho, since photon have the same HW. Maybe a ROM optimization issue?

I played around with my modded alienv4 rom for the weekend. On my atrix, I didn't notice any slowdown while playing on fpse nor n64 with ps3 controller connected on bluetooth. That's with HDMI mirroring. On webtop, it lags a bit but it's not unbearable, even with a firefox window open at gamefaqs.com lol. I wish I had a photon for testing purposes.

@ starrwarrior
I got a potentially huge issue on webtop since I applied the mod. On my modded alienv4 rom, I can use my ps3 bluetooth keypad on the android view window BUT NOT OUTSIDE of it. I can't type in any app in ubuntu with the bluetooth keyboard BUT I can still use the onscreen keyboard and trackpad on the atrix... how weird... It's as if I never activated bluetooth keyboard in webtop. Does this happen to you too on any bluetooth keyboard or mouse? If you're not using webtop, never mind the question lol.

Atrix hd still supports webtop?

Found this lurking around in my system

Yes in fact the desktop dock manual shows how you can use webtop when it's in there... I have not tried it yet though...

Actually it does not support webtop because in this way it can reduce the cost of the phone.

it's in the manual for the dock, but so are other options that I do not have when plugging in my Atrix HD into the desk dock (no hdmi attached)
through software, it might be possible to enable or install this capability (Lapdock or webtop) in our ATRIX HD ???
Some developer who can give us your opinion?

Yes it should, there is some dev work with it though. We are in luck if the modules are included in the kernel..

why would you want webtop ?
I have a lapdock and I use my AHD with it. Chrome or even the OEM browser covers everything I ever needed. the other apps will take care of the document editing and pdf/pps presentations.
I will choose to get all internal storage available over webtop.

The crux is the missing tablet ui without webtop and also the lower resolution. Atrix / Razr HD both using 1280x720, while native lapdock solution is 1366x768. Of course you can use the phone mode (or editing dpi settings in build.prop), but it isn't the same look and feel as with webtop 3.0. there is a lot of loosed space just because of the big softkeys and the wide system bar.
All i want is a native hdmi output or at least a true tablet mode without rebooting. On the other side, i dont need a linux like webtop 2.x, just a tablet look and feel over hdmi on my tv or lapdock.
A little what I've been working on
1, Get all your display size: max out over scan in the settings> display menu
2, Annoyed with the screen backlight on and it draining battery? This app (also on market) works perfectly, if you go into settings> hdmi, auto hdmi detection, the screen will shut it down when you connect and turn back on when you disconnect, just like in the proper webtop.
Be sure to set these while unconnected because it will behave the opposite if you dont. Also good idea to enable shaking wake function for failsafe.
Bad news is the current JB leak doesnt have HDMI support yet, the phone has it so it should appear sooner or later, but if the razr hd has it, we can just use that rom.
3, Ill be finding a call recorder and then trying to have it play back audio through phone speaker next. The lapdock speakers are horrible.
To be honest, you shouldnt be worried about the resolution that much, because the webtop 3.0 was really at hiding the statusbar and giving you your screen space, the current soft buttons do that more, so alot of times you are actually getting more display than before.
Found an app that fixes the audio routing problem.. Allthough its not automatic to switch back to headset/speaker from speaker only when you disconnect from lapdock, i might just cook up a macro to fix that.
What else you need? Hide soft buttons? May have something for that later
name of app to fix sound

[Q] No HDMI - solution? App? CM 10.1

I miss the HDMI-function, but do not want to go back to 2.3!
I know that HDMI is not fixed and supported on any ROM that is not stock-based (I have 10.1) but is there a solution on the way,
or is there a app that actually works on PlayStore?
Try with trial version of Ultimate Rotation Control from app store, i don't know if really work but if we don't try we don't know

Widescreen works if you use the app "Rotate Settings" and set it to Landscape mode.
no such app on play store... can you be more precise?
Sorry, my fault, the app's name is Ultimate Roration Control (here).
It's possible to try it out for 7 days for free trial to see it it works for your phone.
The app only helps you to make the correct mirroring from the phone (landscape, portraite), not making you get the HDMI work if you haven't made a proper build.prop with ROM Toolbox on the phone first.
It's all over internet to read about how that is done. Search on buld.prop + HDMI and you'll find a lot to read about it and how it's done. I'm a complete (oh well....) female noob and manage to fix it!
Also I did notice that using the HDMI cable I bought separately did not work as it was too big to fit on my LG P990. It wasn't being connected properly into the contact on the phone, the plastic is in the way to go all the way in!
By a coincidence I then found the original LG HDMI-cable in a drawer and it's a significant difference between the two in size.
Hope this info helps you guys!

Been trying to recreate those build.prop settings you were talking about, but no luck googling those. Mind to just share the build.prop tweaks?
