all my credit..GONE!! T.T WHYYY - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all ...for some reason all my credit just vanished!! it's RM14 worth of credit! and i just top up YESTERDAY!! my heart sank when i tried to call a few of my friends to hang out and i cant call any of them .. so i called USDD to check my credit and it's RM0.01 ..man ...so ..why does my credit drained so dam fast?? i full wiped my phone a second ago and i did realized my Data Enabled is enabled ( ironic) ..and i suspect it drained my credit...in a nutshell , what things in my phone will drain my credit? man my phone just revived from a hard brick few days ago and now my credit gone out of a sudden ...

Basic things u should know about android....
-it drains credit if data is enabled (i lost rm10 the first time i get my phone)
-almost all background apps want to connect to the net
Solutions:
-switch off data enabled, but u may need to switch it on to send n rceive mms
-to prevent credit loss when trying to receive mms, download apndroid...
Tips:
-dont ever think of surfing the net without an internet package...

Non-affirmative, Sir. After a FRESH install of GingerDX with the suggested Full-Wipe NOTHING is enabled ... NOT mobile data - NOT Wifi.
Even IF Wifi would be enabled by default it wouldn't be able to connect UNLESS you didn't encrypt your WLAN (WPA/WPA2 passphrase encryption).

Well, I'd rather say you may have installed some pirated software that contains some malware which is busily sending SMS without you knowing OR spamming the Internet through the mobile data connection (be glad that you seem to have a pre-paid plan ... otherwise it could turn out WAY worse if you get a HUGE bill by the end of the month).
At any rate, if you TURN OFF mobile data then there's no way in bloody hell that an app can utlilize ANY mobile data (no 3G data connection established, no game). However, if you want to hard-disable it ... EITHER clear your APNs OR install "APN Kill" (you will also loose MMS functionality) which 3G Watchdog uses as a helper to cut off 3G once the Quota is reached (for flatrate mobile data plans).
Also, set applications to "Only on Wifi" whereever possible.

The data is always on when u flasoh a new rom. I know coz im a hardcore rom tester.Usually if the APN is set automatically by the rom,it will drain ur credit.
Well, i suggest the internet package if there is no wifi. I also hardly use internet package, always stick with wifi but the wifi at my college sucks hell,so sometimes i use ingernet package

If you say so ...
In this case it would seem my X8 was doing some applied magic all by itself. While the APNs are there (auto-config through the mobile network) the actual 3G data connection was NEVER turned on by default; not with the Stock ROM, not with Froyobread, not with GingerDX.
Ok, chances are it could be dependent on the mobile carrier, but that's another story entirely.

again..thanks BJ! so in a sense i should download wtchdog 3G to disable any kind of money oriented activity in my phone ? and where can i turn off the mobile data?erm..i do download a few apk files now and then ...but i don't think it will eat my credit ...oh and i don't have any mobile plans ..

1 more..will 3g eat my credit? since i am only 16 and all these money oriented stuff is not needed ...my parents will kill me if i do so

Sorry, memory failed me ...
The application 3G Watchdog uses to kill the 3G data connection is APNDroid (PAYWARE!)
3G Watchdog itself is a app that is counting how much traffic passed over your 3G data connection (upload/download). Since it's a watchdog it can warn and even disable the 3G connection if you're about to surpass the quota of your mobile data plan.
As a usage scenario example ...
I've got 15GB/Month mobile data.
3G Watchdog (Pro, in my case) is set to ...
- Reset the counter every 18th of the month
- Throw a warning once the quota is at 85% (of the allowed 15GB)
- DISABLE the 3G connection (by using blocking with APNDroid) once the quota is at 95% (to accomodate for inaccuracies).
This means that you can't establish a data connection UNTIL the counter gets reset at the 18th.

Depends on what kind of plan your phone has.
1. If you are on a pre-paid plan with NO data plan included BUT data not blocked...
Yes, in this case the mobile operator will charge you a certain amount per Megabyte or Gigabyte transferred (ask the support of your mobile operator or ask your dad).
2. If you are on a pre-paid plan WITH a data plan included ...
You won't be charged for as long as you stay within your monthly traffic allowance (called "quota"). If you bust through the amount and your mobile operator does not kill the data connection due to being "over quota" they will, of course, charge you for the amount of extra traffic you caused.
3. If you're on a subscribed plan with NO data plan BUT data not blocked...
See "1"
4. If you're on a subscribed plan WITH a data plan included ...
See "2"

just downloaded 3g watchdog ...and looks very complicated ...i will get to it later , still i don't have a mobile plan ...all my downloads are from wifi and today i downloaded about 20songs? all from my wifi ..and my wifi is pretty sick ! so my mouth dropped when my credit just went to 0 ....and i don't even know what i done
if i am right..i think i used about 150mb + worth of quota? but this never happened to me before ( i used to use a x10mini) and even though my credit is 0 i am still able to access to the internet and download apps ...so why did i lose my credit? is it virus?

If you connect to the internet through your private internet connection there's no way you will be charged for the traffic...

...unless you really had your 3G connection enabled (as in "turned on" and as in "connected"). Since Android is based on Linux the system will ALWAYS use the network interface which got initialized latest.
If you have WiFi enabled and you additionally turn on the 3G connection, then all traffic will pass through 3G until you disconnect again. This is not a bug but related to the design of most operating systems.
tohno said:

Well, if you transferred ~150MB on a phone plan that does not contain ANY data at all, then it's very likely that you drained your pre-paid credit with these 150MB (assuming the traffic went over the 3G connection because it was turned on and connected without you noticing - that's why I had the "3G connection" icon added into the status bar of GingerDX ... 3G / Wifi / BlueTooth / GPS / Speaker at the top when pulling down the status bar ... alternatively you could also add the "Powermanagement" widget to your homescreen to have a visual feedback about what's enabled and what's not).

If it's voice or mms trough 3g then no, it won't eat credit.. only data will. And no, if you disable data transfer, it doesn't turn on by it self.
Tip: if you want to have data enabled all the time so you can receive mms's but you don't want it to access the internet, just go to your APN settings and change the APN field to something invalid. For ex: My APN name is net2.vodafone.pt, if i rename it to net2.vodalolol.pt, the phone will never make a successful connection and it won't waste my money.
There are some apps that to this.. I use APN Portugal, it can configure my connection but it also has a button and a widget do "Turn the internet down" without disabling data transfer. I actually don't need this in stock rom because i can send and receive mms with data disable, only custom rom's need this.
Edit: What APN Portugal does when you press "Disable internet" is adding "#apnportugal" to the apn field, like "net2.vodafone.pt#apnportugal" making it invalid.. you get the idea.
See if it's 3G Watchdog that is enabling your data..

This happened to me before. I lost €20. Worth of credit :0
Luckily in my country my network has a plan for students:
Top up by €20 every month and get
- 10GB Mobile Data
- 10GB Data for a Laptop (USB stick thingy).
It works for me: D

Nope, 3G Watchdog is a PASSIVE software only MONITORING the traffic that happens to pass through the 3G data connection - the application has NO MEANS to enable the connection by itself.
You know, if, for example, the (custom) ROM or some software would do fancy things like enabling the data connection by itself just because "it feels like it" you can safely expect me to post a well-worded bug report (I leave it to your imagination to put "well-worded" into the right perspective) into the developers direction and not recommending such crap of a software in any way, shape or form.

As Nikkopt already said ... voice or MMS will not eat your credit as that should be part of your phone plan.
Mobile data (the 3G Internet connection) is another topic. Again: if your phone plan does NOT have a data plan attached, and your mobile operator is also NOT blocking internet access, then this will eat up your credit like wild (that's where most of the mobile operators make their money by ripping off unsuspecting customers having a smartphone with a unfitting plan).
However, if you don't even have a slight clue about what kind of phone plan you actually got, it would be about time you take your dad and sit down by the table to straighten this thing out.

Worried!!

Hi Peeps,
i use the internet quite frequently on my diamond... but i'm always worried about the data connection still being on after i finished surfing...
how do i make sure that the data connection is completely off once i finish surfing the net? i dont want to occur data charges for hours and hours??
thanks
????
If you can afford it get a unlimited data plan....or put on schap's advanced config tool and you can set up a timer....pm me if you more help.
Peace
Mike
I believe the data connection can be on 24/7 and its OK. As long as its not 'active' i.e. not transferring data to or from the device.
The whole idea of GPRS, 3G, HSDPA is that they are always on... but not charging unless being used.
When active you have the animated double arrows showing data transfer... check the manual for the task bar icons to see. This is the same with all connection types (except bluetooth).

Correct.
It gets a bit tricky with newer devices, however, if you don't have an unlimited plan because there's almost always something running in the background (weather updates, email polling, GPS download etc) unless you make an effort to stop each of them from initiating a connection. The best way to enjoy what a device like the Diamond has to offer is with an unlimited data package.
Which unlimited plan do you use in Egypt, mkhattab?
it take more battery life like this if it stell on guys !

if you want to stop it completely jast prass the E or H icons on the upper bar and then press disconnect

Not always. There are quite a few ****ty networks in europe and other places that still use the old 'per minute' charging model on GPRS networks as well.
For people stuck with these bastards, it is worth having a timer somewhere to automatically kill the connection. but mkhattab is right. When i had the diamond from work, even with the timer set, it never disconnected even with push mail turned off, so it seems that they send out some sort of keep alive maybe?
Use Skschema to setup a script (they have examples you can copy/use as a tutorial - quite easy) to run an auto shutdown of 3G/GPRS every x minutes of the day, every xth day of the week/month etc.
link http://s-k-tools.com/?skschema/m_skschema.html.
I've tested it with Activesync and it appeared to work very well for the week's trial, I had.

AT&T Wifi Question....

Ok, so I called the AT&T dorks at their "Business Center" and this question:
"Can I use the WiFi from my own personal wireless router on my phone? If I do, do I have to pay for it? I ask because there is no reason that I should be paying for internet 2x."
The response:
"If you access the internet on your phone regardless if it is WiFi or if it is over the AT&T network, you will be charged for it if you do not have a Data Plan."
Is this correct? I mean, if I turn off the "phone" on my phone, will it still charge me? Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get around this garbage? I would like to use the WiFi on my phone, but I don't really want to pay the 50 cents a Kb or whatever for it. Thanks for the help!
They do rip u off ALLL the time, that the same question I thought of when I was getting my tilt. but tell u what, start using UR phones wifi and if they charge u for data , U can sue them for extortion. Call them now and tell them to disable data connection and start using ur WIFI.
such a RIP OFF att is sometimes.
Yea, using Wifi has nothing to do with ATT. If you connect to your router, and you don't see the little E or G or 3G icons, then your NOT using any data from ATT. - they can see your data usage as it is sent from your router to your phone.
Your fine.
^ yep, you will NOT incur any fees/charges from AT&T for using wi-fi.
Oh boy if they had told me that I think I would have been crying with laughter.. Yeah man you can take your sim card out and wifi... Stupid at&t, you should call them back and say something about that.
AT&T, like any other large corporation, does have its share of idiots working there. You managed to talk to one...lol
Great
Thanks for the help, guys, I thought I was just going to get ripped off. Appreciate it greatly!
There is no way for them to tell if you're online on your phone if you're not connecting through MediaNet. Trust me, I bought a wireless router a couple years ago just so I could browse the net on my phone. They can't tell. Just go into Settings, Connections tab, Connections, Advanced tab, Select Networks, Adjust both dialog boxes to anything but MediaNet. That fixes that. I called them and asked the same question just like the next man a few years ago & got the same answer. It all depends on who you talk to. If you can get someone on the phone that has a similar device that you do, they'll know better. Trust me, been surfing wirelessly for years now with absolutely no fluctuation. If I'm not connecting through thier servers, then how would they know?
They will charge you, dont listen to the people that dont know, they just THINK that they cant charge you, but they have not talked to any reps like you and I. And I did get a $119 for using my wifi, and when I called I was told that wifi is not free if I dont have a pda package. Also I have a No Data installed on my phone to ensure I do not use up any data services except for wifi.

If that is the case and you are 100% sure that you werent streaming data via edge/3G, take it to court. They WILL loose. Period.
You do NOT have to have a Sim card in the phone to use the WiFi via a Wireless Router. Your device will get online and surf without it ( the sim ). If they charged you for using your OWN Wifi and you let them charge you, then the yolk is on you.
For all of the other posters, I will tell you a Simple way to make sure you dont dial out and accidentally catch onto a 3G / Edge network.
Just DELETE The damn Medianet / MyISP settings inside of network connections. Make sure it is 100% empty and void of any and all other connection types. Also, Make sure you take your phone OFF of THEIR proxy. Doing this will 100% prevent them from even knowing that you are using the phone at all with data.... as this is their only means of tracking the data usage on the phone.... ( Research the word Proxy and you will be all the more wiser )
Good luck and I hope I have helped some of you!
P.S.
My father was given my old hermes when I got the kaiser. He is too cheap to buy a data plan however has wifi in his house as well as his office ( Both of which I set up ) and has absolutely no problems with ATT. They have NO IDEA he is using the phone with his own Wifi.

[Q] How can I remove internet?

Hey guys the G1 data plan is getting too expensive for me and I'm planning to cancel soon. After I call in and cancel, how can I get my G1 to stop trying to access the internet unless its Wifi? Or once I cancel I won't have to worry about this?
I also heard a rumor about changing the APN settings so you can still have and use the internet? Is this true?
no real way to stop the phone from accessing the web since even in the background it sends packets of information. that's just how the phone works that's why you need the data plan for this phone.
i want to cancel the plan cause my sis is paying for mine and i dont want her paying 300$+ a year on me. but i dont want to be charged after i cancel the plan cause my g1 is still accessing the internet. Anyways to prevent it from accessing the internet?

i just said no there is no way to to shut off the internet due to the fact that the phone requires you to have a google account to run it even if you flash a adp build and skip the logon proceedure the phone still access the web in the background without you knowledge you will still get billed for data charges at t mobs data rate which i think is 25 to 50 cents per meg used.
disable auto sync
if you disable auto sync you wont be accessing the internet much (assuming you don't have a ton of news widgets or something) then sync when you're connected to wifi (toggle settings works well for this)

the problem is even with auto sync off the phone still polls the internet in the background for updates and other things you could remove every internet reliant app off your phone and it still polls the internet it just the way android is designed he want to stop all internet traffic which is impossible without hacking the rom beyond what we do or pulling out the sim. even google maps requires to poll the internet in the background without him even turning it on. it's just impossible to stop it completely.
Install APNdroid.
Easiest, simplest, most reliable way: Go into settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, then click on each one and hit menu then delete. You will also need to finangle with tmobile through their customer service number in order to get them to cancel 3g for your G1 (they have some kind of a policy that's supposed to mean that you have to have an unlimited data plan with the G1, but if you're patient with them they'll let you cancel and just have voice.)
Even easier way. Download Toggle Data from market. That's what I've been using since I cancelled my plan. No more data in the background, so my battery life is longer. Sometimes my phone goes like 2-3 days without charge. (Of course without using wifi)
apns not only control how the phone connects to the internet it also handles how it connects to make calls which is also how it connect to edge/3g. so see the conundrum we have here removing all apns also kills making calls.
Before I bricked my G1, (I don't have a data plan) I just went to the T-Mobile store and told the guy what I could do to stop the internet. He just changed some kind of port number and stopped the internet so I don't get charged.

No, the APN controls cellular data (internet and MMS) only. Voice and SMS are "built in" so to speak - as long as the SIM matches yoru carrier's records, they will work.
Deleting the APNs (or using APNdroid) will block cellular data, leaving voice, SMS and WiFi internet unaffected.

Data and WIFI...

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows if when I connect to the internet using a WIFI connection (whether its one I own or a public one)...does that count as "data usage" on my bill?
The reason I ask is because I'm on tmobile and a most of you probably already know, they lowered the cap to 5gbs of data a month and after you go past that limit you'll still have data connection but it'll be super slow (most likely EDGE speeds) until your new billing cycle begins. I'm currently at 4.8gbs already (watching youtube videos, using the internet, xda, etc) so I want to know if I can use an open WIFI connection without worrying about going past 5gbs.
Thanks.
no it wont count as data usage.

make sure you go to Wifi advance settings and select "Wifi sleep policy" accordingly (I suggest to put it on "Never")
If you don't do so, Android will turn off Wifi and switch to mobile data when your screen is off or not plugged in.

note that the wifi sleep policy will only work if you are running FRG83 (2.2.1) unless you are VERY lucky to not experience the bug on 2.2

mobile data
also if you really want to not use any of your mobile data you can go to settings>wireless and networks>mobile network settings and turn off data, then you will only use data over wifi and won't use any more data

[Q] Galaxy Note 3g usage

Hi,
I use New Zealand Vodafone, and prepay plan for 3g,
it is only 100mb per month, and when I turned on my 3g about 2 hours, and my vodafone widget showed me 10mb used.
however, I did not touch my phone at all, and 10mb internet usage gone.
I know there are little bit traffic even if I don't use, but 10mb is a lot.
When I used Nexus S there was no issue with 3g, and 100mb was enough..!!!
So, I would ask any guys have had measure 3g usage?
all depends on what apps you are running etc
yeah.. main thing is the background apps. i hope there is some way to find out which apps are using internet at the background.
what you can do is press the power button for a second and you'll get a menu. just deactivate data connection. activate it only when you need something. but obviously, this means you wont get any real time incoming messages from messenger apps. but still you save a lot of data usage.. and battery
There is 3g watch dog or something application is there, you can get idea which application consuming how much data.
100MB is enough??
I'm on a 1GB 3G plan and its been 10 days or so 300mb is already gone and i'm not using the fone for youtube or something. Its just emails, Latitude social networking and whatspping.
I barely use my wifi now as 3G is much faster
This must be a joke right? 2gb a months i have which is quite terrible. Switching to unlimited network soon.
100mb/month? Get a different phone. Without proper internet you disrespect 80% of Note's great functionality!!
Seriously, get some internet

Come on guys. Those kind of deals are not available in New Zealand. How about more useful answers than "have reality be different" ;-)

In that case just disable data network and use only wifi :/
You can install some network tracker to see which apps use net. Turn off auto updating in abdroid market for all apps

Wow only 100mb!
I have a limit of 1000mb, which can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but if you use WiFi at home, it is not a big issue.
Anyways, as the others said, use an app to track what uses the data.
I use sometimes only 2-5MB per day with normal use.
I use My Data Manager to keep track of my use , it is a great program, it shows the usage in the drop down menu
Try netcounter or 3g watch dog apps, you can set your own daily weekly monthly alerts, think 3g watch dog can be linked to app called apndroid to cut off usage when limits crossed. But in your situation best to switch off mobile network from settings menu to avoid excessive data charges.
For example I crossed 500 Mb today in less than half hour downloading some games and additional files from gameloft.
Use opera mini browser for decreasing data use when browsing and don't use stock browser when using mobile network.use stock browser only when on wifi in your scenario.switch off all synching in settings menu.switch off roaming in menu as well.but then doing all this you limit the devices capabilities but you have got to do what you need to do to suit your predicament
We have 2gb for 10$/month and 10gb for 20$/month, I think I'm switching to 10gb because I still feel like I limit myself

Yes 100 MB is quite less, n difficult to manage, when you have lovely G-Note on your Hand.
I am using 500MB/month plan. but actually i do have wifi access at both Home n Work place. I simply managed it with app phoneweaver. It turns on wifi n turns off when i am reaching n leaving from these places. In addition it swithoff data + wifi both just after few min of my sleeping time, as well turns on just before i wakeup.

It might be useful to consider a COMBINATION of options:
1. Consider switing to a 2G network connection if available, as the same is much cheaper than a 3G in your area. Needless to mention, u will have to compromise the speed while on 2G
2. Use Wifi, is appropriate places, and as suggested by Dr.Ketan, u may use apps like phoneweaver etc. to manage the location based switing of wifi/ data network
3. Use apps like 3Gwatchdog to monitor your apps and kill unnecessary data hogers
4. and yes, if u love your note, U MUST HAVE DATA NETWORK or WIFI connection always ON, as or else... u know u are not optimizing you investment on note
5: Last but not the least: I believe, if u can afford a superb device like note, then I am sure its just a matter of "state of mind" to UPGRADE and get ADAPTED to a good 3G scheme. (am based in India, and I am on Vodafone 3G plan of 3GB per month, and I pay INR 850 (thats about USD 16.7 per month), and initially I thought this was too much I am used to this "state of mind"..... just give this a thought my friend
Power Button and Switch "Data Network Mode" off. Forever.
I don't know how you guys survive with 100MB per month. They shouldn't even have a plan like that.
I was able to adapt my non-smartphone data plan to the gNote on ATT
So unlimited costs me 15$/month
I use at least 15GB a month.
