[Q] Soft Bricked, Odin doesn't set up partition - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have done hours of researching and this isn't my first time i bricked a phone so I kind off have some experince fixing the phone but this seems harder than before.
I first tired to flash a kernel through odin on my captivate because i wanted to try out cyanogen mod but somehow the kernel had failed on me. When i tried to restart my phone, I got the phone---!---pc logo.
So i did some research on how to get the phone out of the soft brick. First thing I did was trying to get into recovery mode with the 3 buttons, but didnt work out. After that I tried to get into download mode and it worked. My first thought was too use odin and reflash, and that is what i did. Now the problem is, I had put the correct pit file and stock rom, because I had reflashed using these two same files before, but the thing is, it gets stuck on "set partition". So I did everything from, trying on different computers to changing usb cables to using different versions of odin and finally to taking out the sim card and sd card and taking out and placing the phones battery back in. And i had everything checked too so that wasn't the problem. The following were checked: Auto Reboot, Check Re-Partition and F.Reset Time.
If anyone knows the solution can you please help me out, thank you in advance!

When you check repartition, you need to load a pit file in the pit slot/tab for Odin. You have two options.
1) Flash froyo stock(kb2), if you don't want/need Gingerbread Bootloaders. The Heimdall package from Adam Outler is an easy 1 click solution.
2) Flash KF1 if you need GB bootloaders. This will also fix ant previous 3 button combo problem you may have. Use the package with a pit file and bootloaders.
It also sounds like you may need ajig to get into download mode, but if you follow the Captivate sig link below, you should be able to find everything you need to get going.

Thank you !
Thanks a lot mrhaley30705 ! I have gone through of some guides and done more research about these two, and I was thinking of flashing kb2 on to my phone but I'm really worried if it might brick my phone, because the captivate I have is the rogers one not the ATT&T one.
I just had a few questions like, before I do the Heimdall One-Click, is it required to install the Zadig file ? because it had came up before I opened up the Heimdall One Click program. I think i had used the Heimdall One-Click before (the video that is posted on youtube) by outleradam, but the thing was, it wasn't recognizing my phone. So I'm guessing it has something to do with Zadig file, because I made sure I ran it as Administrator also so I'm kinda lost.
My other question was, the consequences, if this program would not work for me, would it hard brick my phone? I really want to make sure I go ahead with it.
And my last question is, if I were to go ahead with this, it said on the forum I would have to reset my APN settings, so would that be applying another software to the phone or can i configure that manual ?
And Thanks again for all your help !

If you want the Canadian firmware, search for TRusselo's stock threads. He has a full set of Canadian firmware.
Anytime you flash bootloaders there is a chance of hard bricking your phone, either from an interruption in communication between your phone and computer (think power outage or bad cable) or accidentally mismatching bootloaders (think the old 3 button fix on top of GB bootloaders). Just follow all of the precautions you can when flashing bootloaders.
APN editing is done manually.

Oh alright I got how put the APN information, thank you.
And oh okay, that makes more senses.
And for the Canadian firmwares, that's what I pretty much did with Odin, I took his stock firmware and tried to flash it with Odin but wasn't passing the "set partition" part like I mentioned before. I followed his instructions too. So, that's why I'm a bit confused now, because I'm guessing if Odin doesn't work then I would have to use the Kb2 link that is posted on your Sig. Do you have any suggestions maybe ?

The canadian version of the captivate will flash the US verson, it just changes your boot screen and kernel splash to an att one. I would flash the KB2, then if you absolutley had to have the canadian version, flash it.

Thank you !
Thanks a lot once again ! and I will give it a try and let you know how it goes !

Maybe try NOT checking re-partition. This sometimes can cause a problem, in fact most tutorials i have seen always say DO NOT check re-partition. It's worth a try

Downgrading from JPH no 3 buttons combo to JM1

Hi,
Is there a way to edit registry like in this tutorial http://mingersoft.com/blog/2010/09/samsung-galaxy-s-reclaim-the-missing-three-button-modes/ to downgrade from JPH to JM1? I don't have 3 buttons combo and I can't root the phone.
I am new to this but I dont think so through Kies, I think you will have to use Odin, download the JM1 files from www[dot]samfirmware[dot]com and adb to get in to download mode. It could be dangerous as you don't have the 3 buttons combo, but I did it and it worked first time, but do research first, and take your time.
Seams this phone is very easy to brick, un-like my HTC Desire, so be careful, the official Froyo is out soon, so it may be better to wait to see what happens with that?

I prefer the Kies method because I tried to install the 3 buttons combo fix described in this tutorial but It didn't succeed. Anyway, I was able exiting from download mode and nothing was changed to the phone. I think that Kies is not forcing flashing something that isn't compatible like Odin and I'm not risking to brick the phone (may'be I'm wrong).
PS: I've read that Samsung people claim that recovery and download mode aren't supposed to be used by customers. False, because after the unsuccessful flash, Kies asked me to put phone in download (or recovery, I don't remember well) mode because the firmware must be recovered. Obviously I've ignored that because the phone was ok.
I did the Kies to JPH, the day after, the 3 buttons combo came out! so used Odin to go back to JM1 then did this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201
I have an unlocked & unbranded phone.
It was all very risky, but was ready to return phone, as I've only had it 7 days in the UK, but it all worked for me, but would not want to recommend this, I've got a fair bit of experience in flashing phones, or I could just be a bit stupid, and went for it.
There seams to be lots of different stories as to why the 3 buttons combo is missing, its just stupid, what ever the reason as it will cost Samsung more in repairs, they must know the Android community likes to do a little hacking here and there!
What ever you do, I hope all goes well!

I don't know how to go back to JM1 using Odin. Every tutorial says I need root at least. Or having 3 buttons combo enabled.
The way I did it?

This could be wrong, anyone with more experience than me please say if it is!!
To get into download mode:
What you need is the Android SDK, install then using the Command Prompt and type "adb reboot download" this will reboot the phone in download mode.
then look here www/samfirmware/com for I9000XWJM1 # and Galaxy S / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (512) and the Odin program.
Pit file 512
for PDA choose CODE_I9000XXJM1.tar
for PHONE choose MODEM_I9000XXJM1.tar
for CSC choose CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar
I did not have repartition clicked the next two were, and I checked Phone Bootloader update.
I had Odin setup with all the right files and settings, then used the "adb reboot download" the phone went into download mode, and then drivers were auto installed and Odin found the phone on com7, I held my breath and went for it.
But, I would do lots of your own research through this site, I could have just been lucky? and if you have even a little doubt, don't do it and wait for Kies and the official froyo.
Hope this helps a bit!

Ok, I will give it a try. But, can you gave me a link to all this files? I am really confused by now, reading dozens of threads and I want to be sure I will use the same files you used.
Hi
here for the SDK
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
and here
www.samfirmware.com
for the firmware/Odin/and pit files
I used:
I9000XWJM1 # (this has the CODE/MODEM/CSC .tar's in a zip file, password needed but on the web page)
Galaxy S / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (512)
Odin 1.3
this was helpful, but not a guide to this:
http://www.techlivez.com/2010/07/how-to-upgrade-galaxy-s-to-android-2-2-tutorial/
Thats about the most info I can give you, but I will say (not to be nasty) but I hold no responsibility for a bricked phone, it is easy to do, but appears even easer to brick! the new froyo may be out on the 23 of this month, so maybe wait till then to see if samsung has fixed all the problems, I'm sure you would kick yourself if you bricked it a few day before an update that fixed the problem.

[Q] Problem flashing back to stock rom

I have a samsung captivate on the rogers network, and custom roms have been nothing short of a nightmare, with cyanogenmod being the only custom rom that correctly worked on my phone, and everything else either not booting at all, or booting and not letting me do much, and I've had it. I want to go back to the stock rom (which I downloaded off a megaupload link from a thread on this site), and I've already done it before, to repair my phone after it got so broken it wouldn't boot anymore, but this time it won't let me.
I noticed something odd. Normally, when a captivate with a stock rogers rom is booted, it shows the phone model number, then the animated rogers boot screen for about one second, and then the samsung galaxy s animated boot screenshows up, with the boot jingle, and then you use the phone.
Now, the phone inverts the boot screens, with the galaxy s animated screen showing up before the rogers one, and then the screen goes black where it should let me use the phone as usual. Only once was I able to see the regular lock screen and even then I couldn't use the touch screen at all.
I also often get stl10 errors after flashing the stock rom, and using the captivate pit file doesn't help either.
I tried flashing with both heimdall and odin and I have no idea what to do anymore. the stock rom is much more stable for my phone, and I miss it badly. it might be slower and also android 2.2, but at least it wouldn't self-corrupt like cyanogenmod does with my phone every 1-2 weeks.
I need your help with this. I obviously can't do it alone.

last time I had bothered to update cyanogen, it was a week ago. I don't remember the exact nightly build. The other roms I tried were miui, apex and something else that wouldn't boot and which I deleted quickly (apex wouldn't boot either but I spent a couple hours trying to make it work). I wiped everything prior to flashing.
as for the stock rom, it's a stock rom for the SGH-I896 (I896UXJI2), my phone model. before, the stock rom worked fine. I just can't figure out why it's suddenly not working now.
anyone? I really want to put the stock rom back into my phone.
Are you using a PIT file when flashing? If not try using this one with that package then report back.
I've already did that with odin.
and just out of curiousity, what are pit files for?

I dont know what it exacly does BUT I know if you want to repartition your phone and you are on a AOSP like CM7 or MIUI you need a pit.

*windows user* so it's a bit like a batch fdisk?
if so, is the internal sd card itself supposed to be wiped clean? because it didn't happen when I used mine.
Ok so using the PIT file didn't work for you. I've seen several Samsung devices suffer from a problematic internal OneNAND in the past but never one a Captivate. It's always been a TAB, i9000 or Vibrant. Can you try flashing the base files used in the Serendipity ROM? It's the stock Gingerbread installed before flashing the Serendipity ROM itself. You can find them in that thread. It will help distinguish whether you have an actual issue or whether you just need some in depth CSC scripts to help clean it up. In general that ROM has a very nicely built CSC cleanup script that is able to correct what I call "partition bricking" on the Captivate, i9000 and Vibrant. Give it a shot and report back...
Also, if that won't work, I have been able to correct this via JTAG. PM me if it comes to that. If JTAG won't correct it, then it is indeed a case of a partially dead OneNAND. It's rare but does happen.
I'll give that CSC script thing a try. What's JTAG, by the way?
nevermind, I figured out what jtag is.
Now, I'd like to know what the stl10 partition is for, since it's the one I get errors from the most when trying to flash back to the stock rom.
anyone, please?

dbdata.rfs ( /dbdata RFS Partition) /dev/block/stl10
cache.rfs ( /cache RFS Partition) /dev/block/stl11
I know these explanations r from i9000 threads, but hopefully it will give u the answer.
The "stl10" error was because the i896uxji2 firmware package that u were trying to flash, with the Repartition selected, does not contain the dbdata.rfs. But the i896uxjl1 firmware (Froyo) has the dbdata.rfs that u need to have when u select repartition. So, just use the link in my signature below to get to the Heimdall i896uxjl1. Select repartition and the other files, etc. and flash. U should be good to go. Then afterwards, u can go to uxji2 without the repartition, if u desire.
Thanks to hardcore for this explanation and solution.

thanks but I think it's too late. while trying to flash serendipity two days ago, I used the odin flasher that site linked to, and it flashed my phone with at&t's firmware, which somehow completely ruined my phone. now, the phone won't boot, and I can't enter download mode at all. I'm not sure even a usb jig would help, and right now I don't have money for that, so I'll have to wait till I do.
And if this doesn't work, then what? All the phone does is show a spinning little circle, immobile for 3 seconds, and the phone turns off. when I insert the battery (after pulling it out), the phone automatically starts with the same screen, same result. if I plug in the usb cable, it shows the charging battery indicator, freezes, and reboots. This repeats over and over, with no end at all, and since I can't enter download mode in any way so far, I can't do anything about that. It's so bad that not even windows detect my phone, and I've plugged it into two separate computers, so I know it's not just my pc pulling a trick on me.
The worst part is that since I was using wifi tether on my phone (hello, pdanet), now I'm without any internet (right now I'm typing this on my little sister's laptop, from my dad's place.)
So... yeah.
By the way, the heimdall link is for i897 phones, even in the post for i896 phones. Is there any risks my phone will react as badly as it did with the at&t firmware?
^ I've read good things about Heimdall. Btw, if ur phone has any signs of life, then a Jig should get u back into download mode.
The fact that it was at&t firmware has nothing to do with it. Running I897 firmware on an I896 is fine. **** you can run I9000 firmware...
so many days after, I still can't get it into download mode at all. all it shows is a spinning circle, a spinning circle and then the charging battery image for a second when the usb cable is plugged in, and the AT&T world logo when the battery is low.
I could go for a solderless usb jig but even then I don't have cash for that right now (next week.), so until then I'm screwed.
I tried everything minus the usb jig, looked for many threads on the topic, and nothing works. nothing.
no matter how many times I do the battery trick or the three finger salute or the odin stuff, and it still doesn't work.
so... yeah. that usb jig better damn work.
I'll call it magic
First, I'd like to thank 4-2ndtwin for providing a complete stock rogers rom.
Second: how does a usb jig work, really? my thing's computers, software and hardware in general but not to the point of knowing how capacitors, resistors and all that stuff works, so for me the usb jig bringing back my phone from firmware limbo... that's magic. seriously.

HELP! Flashed Wrong Kernel Stuck at Galaxy Screen on Boot

Ok I have a stock KB2 Cappy. I used Odin to flash back to 2.1 KB1 JF6
Then I used Odin 3 to flash a kernel so I can put on CM7. I am now stuck in the Boot screen.
I have no 3 button, I cannot get into download mode (my jig is homemade should i order one?)
I tried to change usb and remove the sim card to try odin again to get back into stock.
Nothing seems to work the only thing is my jig is not good either for DL Mode. I want to get back to stock so any suggestions. I tried heimandall did not work either.
I am really stuck on this galaxy s I897 screen.
Is the jig soldered? If its not make sure you are connecting the correct pins and use some black tape or something to isolate your fingers from the resistors (might screw up the actual ohms making it to boot up normally and not in to dl mode.
The bootloop was expected, you are supposed to check that you have a working button combo both before you flash the kernel (because it will bootloop and you boot into recovery and flash whatever) and before you ever flash cm7 because that is the only way to get into download mode besides a jig on aosp roms.
so, fiddle around with your jig some more and if you get it in download mode just flash the captivate gingerbread bootloaders, that will fix your button combo and allow you to proceed flashing cm7.
Hi Guys,
I have a similar problem. I am a total noob-I've had my I896 cappy (Canadian Rogers based) for about a year now; i fiddled with it on Saturday and also got the bootloop. I freaked out, and managed to further flash (out of frustration and confusion) the cappy with another wrong ROM, the I900. I managed to get it back into DL mode and tried flashing stock eclair or 2.2 froyo via ODIN. For some reason, whenever I start the flash (press start on Odin with the froyo 2.2 file on PDA), the progress fails at the factory section. I don't know much about jigs yet, but any tips would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Chord in the back of the PC directly attached to the motherboard NO EXTERNAL HUBS, right click on Odin run as admin.
Once you have it working READ AND UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE DOING, BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE TO YOUR PHONE
This is probably the easiest guide on how to make one. Layman Jig First one I did I butchered a pare car charger to make it. You can just grab one from MobileTechVideos.com for about $8.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the link.
From what I understand, a jig is an improvised connection that allows your phone to go into DL mode. What if my phone is still capable of going into DL mode? My apologies, as I am at work.
Im not sure what you mean with your question. What the jig does is give the signal for it to go to download mode as was intended by samsung. Same theory on how your phone knows its connected to your computer, or the wall or the car charger. Its by manipulating the current between 2 pins. Keep in mind your phone should always be capable of going in to download mode assuming the hardware is working and your bootloaders are in working order.
I believe I read it on a different website that as long as your phone can go into download mode, then it is only "soft-bricked," meaning it can still be recovered using ODIN. I don't know If I was misinformed or not. I guess my question is, since my phone is still able to go into download mode, but the flash is still failing, did I DL the wrong ROM, or was the copy of Froyo 2.2 I DL'd corrupt? If so, is there a reliable source/site where I can download Froyo or Eclair?
I hope that makes more sense.

You are correct, if you can get into download mode you are not bricked. Make sure you are using the usb cord that came with your phone, plugged directly into the back of your computer. Make sure your SIM card is out, you're logged in as an administrator, and that you start odin before you plug your phone in.
If it still doesn't work, try another computer and/or another cord.
Why do people say take sim out? Ive never taken it out and had no issues. Just curious.
That is a practice from way back in the winmo days, sometimes the flash would corrupt the Sim itself. Not the case anymore for the most part. I'm with you never take mine out either.
Thanks guys, I will try this at home; hopefully it works.

I say it because, while I've never had it screw up the SIM itself, I had a situation where I forgot to remove it and then couldn't get odin to complete a flash on several attempts, resulting in a soft brick that I couldn't flash out of. As soon as I removed the sim, Odin flashed without an issue.
Coincidence? Maybe, although I didn't change anything else. If it possibly keeps me from repeating this terrifying event, though, I'll just keep doing it

Did you get a red "FAIL" message on ODIN? Because thats what I got several times. My buddy also tried and he got the same thing. The green progress bar completes up till about 80 percent and gives up on me. I'll try taking out the SD and SIM cards when I get home, hopefully it works.
Hi guys, little update:
I found this on the forums and used it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Anyways, this worked after my second try. Interestingly enough, it worked once i removed the Sim card, which is what apbthe3 suggested..great! I'm just glad my phone is no longer bricked. Minor issue though, my phone is now an AT&T phone, but unfortunately, I am a Canadian Samsung user. New problem now. My phone is no longer rooted (never was actually, but was bricked in the process), I'm happy it works, but i need to know if there are any Canadians out there that know how to revert my device back to Rogers.
Any help would be great. Anyways, the link I provided works great, so its a great resource for our American friends.
Why don't you look at Cognition 4.x.x? Froyo stock ish looking rom tweaked out the ass very fast. Good rom.

[Q] I think its Bricked..and odin doesnt work

hey guys i have a captivate that i tried flashing and was successful then i tried again and the screen went black. im not sure if my battery died during the process or what but idk what to do. I cant get into recovery mode, i can only get into downloading mode but none of the odin's ive downloaded have recognized my device today. they worked fine yesterday. then i tried "hemidall one click" to try and get it back to stock but no luck. also when i try to power on I get the "Cornkernel" loading screen since that was the kernel i had loaded when it was working, but it fills the bar then shuts off. so it seems like im going to be at the mercy of a computer program since i am unable to access anything on the phone, right? I recently upgraded to gingerbread before all of the flashing of the new roms. all i want is to get back to either froyo or gingerbread, i dont really care, heck ill even take 2.1 at this point. if anyone knows whats going on and can help me thatd be great.
Thanks
Remember to use a rear usb hub for destop and run as admin. Heimdall will mess up your odin drivers.
You may also want to check out the captivate connection issues thread.
Also, to clarify further on prbassplayer's point about Heimdall, it will write its drivers over the drivers assigned to the USB port you are plugged into when it detects your phone. So if you have 4 USB ports and you use port 3 for Heimdall, it would look like this:
1 - Odin port
2 - Odin port
3 - Heimdall port
4 - Odin port
All this means is that you'll need to be aware of the port you used with Heimdall, or just reinstall the odin drivers (they'll overwrite the Heimdall setup).
OK so i tried what you mentioned in that thread on the connection issue and unfortunately it didn't work. is there a way i could start fresh? like delete all the drivers from my computer and then try it again, or do u not think that would work? im open to any ideas/suggestions right now because i hate having an extra paperweight and the thought of buying a new phone.
Don't know if this'll help or even why it worked for me but, when I had problems with odin recognizing my phone, I reinstalled/repaired samsung kies and odin would work for at least one flash.
Note: used full odin (not oneclick)
Good luck
hey guys thanks a bunch i finally got it to work. i had to use a different computer like you said. What a great feeling to have a functional phone again..
Thanks Again!!
So i got the phone back up and running android 2.1 and I would like to get it back to the stock 2.3 I had before the whole mess of rooting and stuff. but when i try to upgrade with kies or straight on the phone it ends up failing and telling me to try it again. any ideas why this is happening? or how to fix it.

Kies sucks lol
look at my sig the first "go to" has the One Click Odin file to get you to stock and rooted 2.3 ...should take no more then 5 mins to do it
the link on that page for the 1 click odin doesnt work.
Try looking >>HERE<<. There are more one clicks there than you will ever need (hopefully)
Thanks I think I might try one of those. But considering what happened earlier in the week i want to clarify/ask a few ?s about that page. How do I know which Gingerbread to use of the 3 listed? How do I know whether or not to click the one with or without the bootloader? I'm new at this with android but I used to flash roms on my old windows mobile htc TILT.

if you have never flashed GB bootloaders, you need to. Just oonce will work from that time forward. After you flash bootloaders, it's best to avoid them. A bad bootloader flash is one of the few things that will turn a Captivate into a paperwight. About which GB to use, I would say KK4. Its the same as the Official KK4 that was released. So to recap, flash bootloaders only once, then use no bootloader packages after that.
Im not sure if I unlocked them or not honestly. I know i had the phone rooted at one point and was running Cerberus rom. is there any way for me to check?
If you don't know, flash them.
ok i apologize in advance if this is a stupid obvious question..i got the odin one click and i was looking at the page u referred to me to and im wondering what the kernel is for? you cant place it in the odin one click obviously so is that just to keep things together or do i actually need it?
The kernel links are just to use if you want to root the stock rom. You have to use full Odin for those. Stick with the one click until you feel more comfortable in flashing AND do a lot research before your next flash.
so i got the KK1 gingerbread working and everything seems to work fine but now my data doesnt work. So I cant get ATT 3g or edge or anything the only internet i recieve is wifi. anyone know why this is? or how to fix it. ive tried a reboot and nothing ive tried changing the settings under network settings.

Not booting past the "Galaxy S" screen...

Hey guys,
In a bit of a pickle at the moment. I grabbed an S1 off a friend to try and teach myself about rooting and flashing custom ROMs and such using Odin. With the final intent getting it to run ICS. Not a very hard challenge, but evidently it is for me.
I'll explain what I did, and if you can help without investing too much of your time I would be very grateful.
When I got it, it was running 2.3.3, all the tutorials I read told me to update it to 2.3.6 before doing anything more. I managed to root the phone easy enough, no issues there. But when I tried to put 2.3.6 on via Mobile Odin, (which I used to flash my S2 to ICS, long story) it had seemed to freeze on 'flashing flash kernel' for a good 15 or so minutes.
Being the daft monkey that I am, I exited the program...by removing the battery (don't judge me please). When I went to turn it on, it wouldn't load past the "Samsung Galaxy S" screen.
It goes into Download mode fine, and I've tried to flash an abundance of different Gingerbread ROMs onto the phone and Odin has just been getting stuck on the "setup connection" every time I've tried to flash.
I have tried using different USB ports which is readily suggested by most people and seems to work, using my laptop instead, different cords as well. No luck. Nothing happens when I press volume UP + home + lock like it used to, so I can't even factory reset or anything =\
I did find somewhere that suggested adding a PIT file to Odin and selecting repartition but every one yells at each other when 'repartition' gets mentioned, lol.
I hope this is in the right place, please bare with me if I used any wrong terminologies, I am relatively new to this.
Has anyone got some suggestions that may help me with my problem? =\
Thank you!
Taylor
sigh...here's my recovery kit, unzip, read .txt file, proceed
