[Q] Clockworkmod can't access files on SD card - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. Uh...I stupidly changed my SD card without backing up the EXT4 partition I set up when I flashed Froyo by Laszlo. When I wanted to change my ROM, I wiped everything and forgot that I had the partition set up so I guess CWM still had all of the information from the old SD card I used. How do I get CWM to recognize this new SD card so I can install a new ROM?

Hey,
I haven't used my G1 since it died (RIP)...but from what I can remember there should be an option in CWM to partition the sdcard. I believe it is under the 'advanced' section. When you do that, it will delete all the contents on your sdcard, so back everything up.
But it also depends on the version of CWM,..Unfortunately I don't know which version has that option..sorry.
Another method is to use a partitioning software on your computer. I've used MiniTool Partition Wizard numerous times and it's very simple.
Let me know how that works out..or if it doesn't. Will try my best to help get you up and running again =)

Problems after apps to SD EXT2 format

Hi
I have some problems with my Dream now after an format fore EXT2 so I can use apps to sd.
I have CyanogenMod 4.0.4
Iv'e used an guide and console for formating my SD card 8gb class 6.
I've made an 7.2gb fat32
700mb ext2
50mb linux swap
After that I converted the ext2 to ext4, checked everything with print and it was ok.
Than when I've rebootet my phone it woudnt start up, it came to the android in blue, and that blinked some and than the screen went black.
So my plan was to upgrade the 4.0.4 to 4.2.5 anyway so I did that.
My phone was an 32B so I used the HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip
Everything went great with that, but when I tried restarting the problem was still there...
Dont know what to do know?
Remove the ext4 partition?
Try restoring your memory card to original and then try to partition it again.
Ive tried to restore my memory card, no help.
Ive tried to boot the phone with no memorycard, still no go...
Dont know what to try anymore..
1) Format the entire card as fat32
2) add other partitions
3) Wipe from recovery
4) Flash your rom
Also this sub forum is for development, which this clearly isn't.
Ok sry i thought this was the place to ask with this.
I got the phone booting up with 4.2.5 and it worked great.
All my programs waws gone so I need to install them again, but no worry.
So I now tried to format the memorycard again, looks like it didnt work again and im at my problem again...
Now it hangs on the T-mobile screen, so I guess out with the battery and try an reboot before I start all over again...
Maby I'm not supposed to have programs on my SD?
make sure you partition properly.
fat>ext>swap
you can install amon_RA's recovery and let that partition your card for you
Hi.
Ive sendt my phone back to originale software, and than upgraded again, and it seems like it's 4.2.5 and the ext partition that is the problem.
If I change SD card to one without the ext partition it's no problem to start after an whipe..
I've tried reinstalling 4.2.5 but no luck, maby I shall trie an ext3 insted of ext4?
Yes have followed the guide on the pratition, and Fat32, EXT than swap

[HOWTO]Change SD with app2sd

Upgrading/Changing of memory/SD cards while using App2SD?
Here's how.
What you need:
-Rooted
-Drellisdee's ThunderG custom recovery(preferably v1.2)
-Card Reader(Optional)
Steps:
-Boot into recovery
-In recovery menu, select "Backup/Restore" then "Nand + ext backup".(If you are using an ext4 app2sd partition, ThunderG v1.2 is a MUST)
-Now with any means suitable to you, transfer the "nandroid" folder found on your SD to your PC.(the easiest way is to mount USB-ms via recovery, but for some reason this option doesn't work for me)
-Now turn off your phone and insert the NEW SD.
-Boot into recovery again and partition your new SD(for app2sd).
-Now again, with any means suitable to you, transfer the "nandroid" folder you just copied to your PC back to the new SD.
-In recovery menu, select "Backup/Restore" then "Nand restore", choose the file to restore(in most cases, there is only one option)
-Wait for it, now reboot.
-Enjoy!
Custom Recovery
ThunderG v1.2
man! you woke up early for this?
kudos!!!! now everyone can happily change/upgrade their cards...

now this doesnt seem right... i mean, it has to work.
hhmm.. mine does. im on thunderG too.
maybe youre lacking drivers for it.... have you checked you device manager?
------------------
EDIT ok i get it. i dont have the V1.2 will try to install later on.
maybe the new recovery has the problem.. and not your PC...
---------------------------------
more EDIT
ok ive just installed V1.2 and yes i can confirm that the USB toggle under recovery works for me.
now the next thing to try is upgarade to a higher capacity card... *lol*
nice one Ungaze!
lol, up late seems more like it.
usb-toggle issue might be usb driver related.
havent flashed the firmware yet so i didnt have the need to install the drivers as well.
i also used this method to revert my app2sd partition from ext4 to ext2. so it also works with different partition filesystem, someone can maybe test if it also works with different partition size.
thats backing up and restoring right?
maybe ill try it on ext4...
anyway, why convert back to ext2? is there any significance?

was doing a test, and speed-wise there is a slight improvement. about 50 - 80 points on I/O using quadrant. Although really unnoticeable and I don't really rely on quadrant that much, performance seems to be just the same.(OptimusXrom maker domenic_s also uses ext2).
i see.. maybe one time ill try to do ext2.. hehehe
theres not much happening with our O1 today ei?!
so i need to do something... hehehe errr experiment on something...
*lol*
now thats weird.. after rebooting the second time to recovery...
i cant find my files under Flash zip files...
seems like only system folders are installed....
I just used EASEUS Todo Backup to clone old sd card (with partition ext 4, i think) to new sd card.
It copied everything on the old sd card to new sd card and it works flawlessly.
The software is free for home user.

good for you. just sharing how I did it since changing SDs are becoming pretty common nowadays.
ungaze, after installing the recovery...
and rebooting it via adb, i can still access the files on my sd card. like for example i want to install a new theme etc etc using Flash ZIP menu on V1.2
but after rebooting the second time.
i cant see the files anymore... just folders....
im not into changing cards. but i just want to install something using V1.2 recovery.
and somehow i cannot see my zip files inside Flash ZIP menu.
thats the place to look for when i want to install flashable zips right?
I see, I think I know what you mean.
One of the new features of ThunderG v1.2 recovery is the ability to recognize folders when choosing a zip file to flash. Well that's good, but the problem is that it still doesn't have the option to scroll down when the screen/list is full(or maybe I just havent found out yet). I also had this problem before, so what I did was to make a new folder with a higher alphabetical priority name, eg: "aaflash", "aflashfiles", "1flash" etc so that the folder will always appear at the top. Then I placed all my zip files into that folder and just open the folder when I need to apply something. Try it, the files should appear.
yap. someone told me that too... and so i did.. and yes it can be read...
but we can still consider that a bug.
and i think the author needs to edit that part.
anyhow. its working fine....
What does this do? Is this the way we can move all our apps to sd card??? Please im desperate

Actually, I can't really call it a convertion, I just backed up the SD contents, format it, repartition ext2 than put the old contents back in place. Update: Ext2 on optimusXrom's app2sd doesnt seem to work, didn't checked thoroughly and app2sd got disabled. Need to contact domenic on how he did this.

[Q] NooB questions (3 of 4): Can't boot to rom after installing CWR (CM7)

Absolute NooB to the NC here, so please be gentle!
I've got four issues that should be no-brainers but they are beating me up. I've split them into four separate posts to keep things clean.
3. I have CM7 RC4 installed on eMMC (would have preferred to run it from uSDcard but that's another story).
After I got CM7 installed, wireless configured and then gApps installed, I noticed that the uSDcard wasn't mounted. No problem, popped into Setup, Storage and mounted the card.
But this card had been around the block a couple of times, so I figured it would be best to freshen it, partitions and all.
Started ROM Manager and tried to partition the card. But ROM Manager wouldn't partition without installing CWR.
No problem... went ahead and installed CWR, then partitioned the card.
But now I have a problem.
No matter what I do now, I can't boot to CM7 if the uSDcard is installed it boots into CWR. Even if I unmount the card before rebooting, still goes to CWR.
The only way I can get to CM7 now is to physically remove the card, boot, insert the card then mount it manually.
Surely this can't be right.
What have I done wrong?
CWM doesn't work correctly if installed from ROM Manager...

Thanks, danger-rat, for the pointer to CWR 3.0.1.0.
Unfortunately, I flashed it and still have the same problem. No matter what I do, boots to CWR if uSDcard is in place.
Format your sd card in your computer. download the attached sdformatter (found it on these forums somewhere) and use it. it will delete any funky partitions on the card. it sounds like that card has cwm on it, and the nook will always boot SD card first.
Please make sure you take the sd card out of your nook, and put it in a card reader to perform this step. not sure if would work right if you tried it in the nook.
I have had to do this a few times to fix cards that have been modified to be bootable on the nook.
Hi,
The Nook Color will try and boot first from an external uSD card. If there is
a bootable image on it, it will boot from it. Unmounting (but not removing)
the uSD before rebooting does not change if the uSD is detected on
rebooting.
From what you say, if you have your external uSD in the slot, you say
you always boot into CWM - I assume this is running on the external uSD.
It sounds like you need to reformat and possibly repartition your uSD to all
fat32. There are several threads discussing restoring a uSD to a single
large partition.
One of them referenced this tool to run on a PC (I haven't used it)
http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
This will delete the contents of the uSD, so make sure there is nothing
you want on it!
I have been keeping several uSD cards around, one for flashing from time
to time and one for data and backups.
Hope this helps,
Peter

all you should have to do is flash the cwm zip with the ext4 kernel (cwmr_3.0.1.0.zip) from this thread:

For me all i did was install with Rommanger, then reboot into cwm and installed the zip. works like a charm

[Q] Need help mounting /system and /data from external SD. Internal SD is dead :/

Hello,
I figure someone here might be able to help since most of where I found information regarding my issue came from this subforum. My phone is i897 (Captivate), but I think it should be similar; I posted there as well but no luck .
I normally can get by pretty well, and I have done numerous searches before posting for help. This time I have really run into a brick wall, and I really need help here.
Basically, I did something really stupid where I did not know that the phone had been booting off a external SD (my mom gave it back to me like that). Actually, I suspected that it did because the phone would have not booted without the card, however, I could flash my phone even if I removed the external SD card (as if the internal SD were there, but it wasn't), but it had always required me to insert the card back in for it to reboot from a flash. So I thought maybe internal SD was fine.
Originally, I had a Samsung 8gb class 6, but I wanted to change it to a 32gb class 10 ( to help the OS run smoother IF it were running on external SD). This is where I made a great mistake; I formatted the 32gb card and made 3 partitions. The first one is in FAT32 of 24 gb, 2nd is in EXT4 4gb, 3rd is the rest in EXT 4 as well. The original setup that was working had about 5.5gb in FAT32 and about 1.88gb of EXT(not sure which). The mistake was that I also formatted the 8gb card as well. In chronological order, these were what has happened:
1. I did a Odin stock reset to 2.3.5 with CWM injected
2. Installed Corn Kernel
3. Formatted both external SDs and repartition as mentioned above
4. At this point, I didn't know there was an issue. CWM sees the external SD and I tried to install CM 10.3 since I read in one of the threads that JB has a weird file systems and it needed to be installed twice to fix sdcard0 and sdcard1
5. CM10.3 installed kernel, and failed afterward since there was no /system and /data. At this point, I have Neat Kernel installed and lost bootloader along with fastboot and cannot access download mode.
6. I have tried to change EXT4 to EXT3 or EXT2 to see if there would be any luck in file system recognition, but no luck
7. The only way I can connect to the phone was through ADB, and verified that my internal SD card was dead because mmcblk0 was not there when I removed external SD
8. I tried to mount mmcblk0p1 (4gb EXT4 partition) and mmcblk0p2 as /system and /data, but I had been getting an error
9. I tried to use USB mount in TWRP, but no additional drive showed up (confirmed dead internal SD)
9. I tried to look for vold.fstabs but /system does not exist. The only *.fstabs file founds were in /etc file (not /system/etc) and is, for example, aries.fstabs
I know for the fact that it can be done because the phone was working before, but I really don't have enough linux knowledge or the what the phone looks at in chronological order in order to figure out how to remedy this. I would really appreciate if someone can guide me to a right direction. Thank you.

I just had a chance to look at it more thoroughly. The biggest problem for me is that my phone does not have an OS, and it's on semaphore kernel where I cannot access download mode nor fastboot. I have tried to install gingerbread kernel to try to recover download mode/fastboot (speedmods), but I kept running into error 0. I have also tried to modify the su.binary, but that didn't work :/. Any idea how to start? Thanks.

Error: Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card

I keep getting this error trying to install apps from the play store. My phone is rooted, the SD card is properly partitioned, and I can successfully link apps to it via Link2SD. The problem is that my phone seems to be very picky about what I can and cannot install. Some programs will install with no fuss, while others will give me the "Error: Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card" error. It's extremely irritating.
Please do not suggest unmounting/remounting the SD card. I've tried this. It DOES NOT WORK.

I don't know if FolderMount would do what you want but you can always try.
Do you happen to have the stock kernel on your phone? Because if you do it's write protection enabled and you can't use that from my experience. You need to install a kernel with write protection removed.
I installed a custom Kernel, write protection's gone. Think wiping the whole thing would help? Or installing a Custom ROM?

A custom rom could definitely help! Just make sure you make a backup of your current system and then try another rom but I can't exactly say any rom that's better than another one because I'm using a personal built rom but all the roms are pretty good and each has their own problems so be sure to read about the rom you choose closely!
