chroot into android? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
This may be a ridiculous question, but I'm curious and haven't yet been able to find a good answer to it.
Given that it's possible to chroot into Ubuntu from WebOS, on the touchpad, is it possible to also chroot into android from WebOS? Would such a process be very much more difficult than it is with Ubuntu?

Found this, which may or may not be relevant:
http://www.slideshare.net/tetsu.koba/android-on-ubuntu-for-developer

So it looks like I'm not the only one who's thought along these lines, but all such projects seem to have died. Is android that tricky, or is the interest simply not there? Ubuntu chroot was possible, and there's some work being done on getting ubuntu and arch running natively. Ditto, of course, for android. Is the horror involved that much greater?

this is interesting.. we know you can run ubuntu on the touchpad in a card.. this would do the next step.. but is that exactly what Chroid was doing?????

Like I said, I have no idea about anything Just thinking that maybe the progress made since october by the CM7/9 people would make the job easier.

mm
ok, Im going to try this on a Linux Ubuntu machine first and see how it goes..
if that works I'll try it out on the tp with cm7

Good luck! Will you use android for x86 in that case?
I'm wondering if it's a problem that android doesn't use X

Yes it's possible. You just have to port it to xperia and make all drivers for xperia and you're done. Not much work isn't it
I want Windows 7 on my X1 as well. Then have VMWare installed so that I can have WinXP, Linux, Solaris running as VM. ;p

Hi,
as funny it may be.... and of course this sounds like a silly question...
....but as you might know WebOS is based on a linux kernel and root system.
At least very similar to Android OS.
So once there is a usable linux kernel with drivers for the main components it could be done.
Sure there's much to do to make this happen, but never say never
EDIT:
Just wanted to add this interesting page: http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/Main_Page

I will get right to work on this! I just have to finish up my Xperia Hover Board....works great...just keeps killing the battery.....slowing down my Windows Server 2003 Application.....
Are you serious? -.-
Is there anyone who can make some drivers for x1 here?Maybe he will give us a great suprise ~
???????????
What would be the reason to work very hard (if at all possible) almost rebuilding from scratch an mobile OS when you already have one good enough? Maybe for the plaetora of applictions available for web OS? Or would it be for the pure pleasure of completly original error of a new almost perfect OS (but not exactly).
I am in for beta testing

aNYONE WORKING mAEMO (oR FUTRE mEEGO) TO WORK ON x1?

first lets get android to woks properly on X1, before going for Mego or maemo.

Maybe because android porting is already at 3/4 while maemo is 0.

Thats just your personal opinion.
I say yes, but not same people as android, so android porting wont slowdown. And if same developer would do it, i'd say first make android port good enough for everyday use.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS WILL WORK ON THE X1??

The n900 version will boot into the console, with correct kernel and settings, this is probably not what you want.
Any linux will work, the kernel needs some work yet. You will not have a fully working phone.

[TABUNTU] Galaxy Tab 10.1 NATIVE Ubuntu WIFI now with a video

Smh the youtube function hates me... click HERE to watch the video...
Touchscreen not working right as of yet... I strongly suggest a USB mouse and Keyboard for this... Touchscreen is pretty much unusable at this time. I would appreciate any help that can be offered.
First start off downloading THIS. It is the ROOTFS.. first off it needs to have the /etc/fstab edited properly to include / as mmcblk0p11 instead of 13... I know I know... This is a work in progress....
Next download THIS... Contains the ubuntu kernel and boot information.. the boot.img and system.img are for your stock ANDROID rom of choice.. just extract the IMG's out of the roms and place them in the folder..
Download THIS and place it in the directory you extracted the above files to.
ADB does work.. and you can ADB into your tab.. I have not created Windows directions yet.. but you can pretty much run the same commands...
I AM NOT TO BLAME FOR ANYTHING! This REPARTITIONS your device and ERASES EVERYTHING... you must do a FULL ODIN to restore to STOCK.... I am NOT responsible for anything that happens to your device.
remember to chmod +x nvflash and the script...
And wait......... It takes about 20 minutes to flash everything... be patient..
When it is done flashing boot up like you were going to go into CWM recovery... Your recovery is now your linux boot image.. You can use NVFlash to flash back CWM to apply whatever and just flash the linux.img back to partition 8 to get ubuntu back..
Thanks again to LilStevie.. without him this would not be possible...
my github code is availabe here.
If you would like to donate for my work and to the OMFGB/OMGB build box which I own and run click HERE
I'll pretty this up when I have a free minute...
Will this work if one has a locked bootloader?

I don't have much experience with the locked bootloader SGT's... Im sorry I can't answer your question...
I'm sure there's tons of interest. These tab 10.1 threads seem so slow at times. a lot different then I'm used to. I'd keep goin with it bro. its gonna be sweet.

This would derinately be useful to me, even more so if it could be dual booted, although I suspect my locked bootloader could be a stumbling block. Thanks for the effort you've put in so far.

yes please definitely interested in getting a version which fully works with the touch screen , that would be awesome!!
Of course were interested. Stop slacking and get past an alpha stage to a bets stage so we can all play.
Goodwork
This is friken cool man!
Keep on it, i would love to have ubuntu+ touch screen working.
I have a locked bootloader, but I would love to see this dual boot along side of honeycomb.

This is awesome! Great job. I can't wait for a dual boot setup.
This is awesome! Definitely keep up the good work. It should work on a locked tab no problem you'll just need to use Odin instead of nvflash so a bit of modification is needed to wrap those images into md5 files for Odin. If I have some free time I'll try it on my locked tab.
Wow I just saw the video and I'm very impressed, I can see this making my netbook redundant I'll try it out once it becomes odin flashable and I have the time to find out more about how it works.
Thanks again for the effort so far.

Yes, I would love to see some Linux working on a galaxy tab with touch screen functioning at minimum.
I was following viewsonic grab Ubuntu thread since last December but developers never got it working. Also video drivers was generic ones without hardware acceleration, camera and sensors did not work either... but this was less important for me then touch screen functionality.
If you can make it happen then by all means you should continue...
nice...
would any of the existing tegra2 development from motorola help? they got ubuntu running on the atrix device.. maybe something can be used?
im pretty sure it can be distributed onto many devices, as the ventana platform is standard, but drivers for touch, panel etc is missing..
how did you get the boot changed? how is the bootloader able to boot between 2 different kernels? do you have the source for bootloader available?

+1. I agree, especially about the Touchscreen, not many have the USB adapter to play around with it so that's probably why the reply count is low.
I think once it's usable without a mouse and keyboard you will see an explosion of interest in this. It's really a good idea to... really opens up the power of these things. Android is nice but it's kiddy stuff compared to a full blown Linux distro.
Linux for Tegra should help provide native 3D acceleration and stuff to If I'm not mistaken... I see a bright future for Ubuntu on tablets. (for nerds like us anyways )
Please don't stop development! lol I really look forward to it

it is an installer of ubuntu..it creates a dual boot menu so you can choose at the startup the os to run but it can be uninstalled like an application in windows from the control panel..Here you can find more infos
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer
i also suggest you to use a previous ubuntu version if you want to build from source cause the latest are only experimentally supported
yeA i got that ...but i guess all the time u unistall then install again..it dowoads 700mb..which aint a small thing

Buy a Ubuntu CD, or download Ubuntu.
No, you don't need a install and uninstall.Anyway, just tell your dad i need a dualboot. You need to prove your Ubuntu skills, that's what i do to get dualbooting in my dad's laptop.

Sorry bro. Ubuntu touch isn't working on the Tate yet and I doubt it'll be any time soon.
Sent from my GT-i9100 running CM11
It used to work, but then Ubuntu changed things and made it extremely difficult to get it working (even @Hashcode couldn't do it. I tried to work with him on it for a little bit, but we never got it working)
there was incomplete documentation. now there is no doc.
This might be OT, no need to reply to this.
How about flashing CM11 and then installing some other chroot linux. Fdroid has at least two debians that run by chroot.
The last CM11 snapshot from november works fine on my tate so it should be a stable base for a chroot linux.
