[Q] How to root P970 Gingerbread V20N - LG Optimus Black

I made this thread in order to discuss possibilities of how to root the latest software for our phone. It's about v20N mainly. Let's try to keep this one clean and root our phone
You can already find a procedure for V20B here: Root V20b
FIND ROOT FOR V20n HERE Root V20N
Methods tried and fail:
http://www.unlockroot.com/? not clear yet...
unlockroot (not clear yet...)
Gingerbreak different Versions
SuperOneClick 2.3.3
Blackjack 1.2.0
adb push wont work for me at least...
SoC
z4root
vipermod
thrill
doomlord all version
androidnerds.net/2011/10/08/lg-esteem-oneclickroot-now-ready/
Gingersnap Root Itility tells me it succeeded, but root still aint present...
adding that ratc exploit
Working so far:
adb install *.apk
According to Redpik: "Superoneclick 2.3.3 was able to copy busybox into /system/tmp but couldn't find the glitch."
Local rooting, since some apps like rootchecker show our phone is rooted
As it seems, Unlockroot also works for some with v20n, maybe even others, if they disable the LGE Modem.
I somehow managed to root it by aproxymately doing this:
Enable debugging mode
Disable LGE Modem
Plug in USB cable
open UnlockRoot
click root
REBOOT and DONE!
Code:
-edited-, cause it didnt work with the method posted before.
Kill adb server
Starting adb server...
Get online devices
Try LGE shell rooting...
push file to device : rootutility
chmod file 755 rootutility
Restarting debug mode...
Waiting for debug mode...
push file to device : busybox
push file to device : su
chmod file 755 busybox
push file to device : Superuser.apk
Rooting, please wait...
Root Succeed!
Root finished!
Noone could reproduce the root till now, but I'll keep on trying.
It somehow worked and I made a nandroid of this. Link below...
How to flash it:
1. unzip the file
2. Take the whole folder and put it on ur SD card under sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
3. You need a rooted phone where you can access recovery by either using a app like RomManager or by adb shell via: adb reboot recovery (thnx to gabwerkz, since I didnt know)
4. reboot to recovery either via command or APP
5. choose backup and restore
6. choose restore
7. choose the foldername u just put onto ur SD card
alternatively (PRO USERS ONLY)
go till step 5
and then choose whatever you wanna have
Thats it so far. Maybe a MOD can take this thread and moderate it, since I hardly have time (but if possible also gimme right to edit it).
You also will find the solution in this post, as soon as any1 made it
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seems like I made it
here is the link to a complete NANDROID BACKUP
http://www.multiupload.com/ZGYX5J4AG1
ITS rooted V20N GB software for p970.
THIS IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP! UNPACK IT AND FOLLOW GUIDE ABOVE!
IF you want a flashable zip, pls go to Redy's thread, he repacked and added some tweaks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441901
Big thanks to Redy!!
Or use Zeus ROM by huexxx: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454274
DO A FACTORY RESET AFTER FLASHING, WILL FIX SOME PROBLEMS!
Mick2K suggested me to post, that you should install busybox after the procedure and update su binaries, so that everything works fine.

Can you correct the title not just "root our GB", to be more specific please.. Perhaps such as "[Q] How to root P970 Gingerbread V20N", or anything you'd like to be specific..
Thanks.

"[Q] How to root P970 Gingerbread V20N", is a better title. For we have many different versions of OB rom, to be specific is important for us to understand easily.

This may be a long shot as I am not sure how the exploits work but...
It seems one issue is with not be able to set read/write to the systems folder.
I have been unable to mount the systems folder as writable. I think this is where the fundamental issues seem to be.

Superoneclick 2.3.3 was able to copy busybox into /system/tmp but couldn't find the glitch.

[How To] Temp Root

I take no credit for this, but I tried this out and was able to achieve temp-root.
Just though I'd post it till someone is able to figure out perm root. All thanks should go to Revolutionary
Hello!
We would like to announce the public availability of the root exploit we use in Revolutionary, named zergRush.
This local root exploit should be Android-wide, across Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbread (2.3). However, this will not work on Android Honeycomb and up (3.0+).
Simultaneously, we're also releasing source code for this root exploit through our github.
The binary is available from here: zergRush binary.
The exploit source is available here: Revolutionary GitHub.
Usage:
You will need adb shell to execute this exploit. We need shell permissions.
Push the binary onto /data/local/ and execute these commands in a shell:
Code:
$ chmod 755 /data/local/zergRush
$ /data/local/zergRush
The resulting output should look something like this:
Code:

What do you mean by temp root. Will I loose it once I reboot?

Welp, with temp root, you can kill bloatware now.
I can't wait to pick one of these bad boys up, I've wanted an HTC phone for the longest time, and with LTE, it makes it that much more desirable.

Get one of the bloatware freezers from the Market after you have temproot and SU put on the phone than you can freeze the bloatware rather than out right removing them.. The Reason to freeze them first is in case they cause FC's for some unknown reason you can unfreeze them or just reboot the phone. I mean once we have full root and all that stuff and can backup the Stock OS than removing the Apps should be no issue as you can just restore your backup but until then I would suggest doing the Freeze method. I hope HTC Left the bootloader unlocked, that would be nice for a change. Although knowing AT&T they probably made them Lock it. Also awesome to see that we already got our own spot for our awesome device phone. Looking forward to some good Roms.

Temp Root Guide for Dummies
Hey guys, I just picked up my Vivid today (in love!). I've rooted devices before, but have never used a method like this with ADB. Is there anyone that would be willing to put together a step by step tutorial for dummies on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
if you unlock the bootloader first on htcdev you can keep root, tried it and its a go

If nobody gets around to it before I get my phone in the mail, I'll see if I can put one together. A step-by-step would probably help a lot of people. The rooting method seems a lot like what I used on my Incredible S (actually, easier, since the IncS had a locked bootloader that couldn't be unlocked at htcdev.com!). Unfortunately, I ordered mine online so I could get the discount and get the white version, so I have to wait for them to ship it to me.
I tried to unlock my Vivid at the htcdev site and unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. Maybe we'll have to wait a bit until it's supported.

I am having issues getting to Fastboot. Keeps saying win whatever not installed even though I got look in platform-tools and its sitting right there. Hmm I haven't updated in awhile, could that be it? Yea wow I didn't realize how far behind until I started update holy god lol that's what I get for not updating it within the past 3-4 months.

Not sure if others have tried, but I'm getting the dreaded CID not allowed (basically means carrier not allowing it) error...might just have to wait for someone to figure out the exploit to get it unlocked for perm-root
Either that or wait for HTC to come out for an actual Unlock for the device.
CID locked
Same for me. Oh, well.
Standing by...
I can't seem do get it to work, I must be doing something wrong.
I get through all the steps, get the root shell (#), and the ID comes back as 0 (root). That's all good.
I then install Superuser in the Market, but none of the apps I try to use can seem to get root access. They can't find an SU binary. Why would superuser install and run but there be no su binary? Any ideas on what to do?

[Q] Any one got a Verizon OTA 2 nights ago?

I got an OTA on Friday night or Saturday morning. Didn't notice any changes.
Next day, I realized I lost root. TiB says root access is denied. SuperUser is still installed, so that's not the problem. It's not even ASKING any more.
I tried running pSouza's one-click root, it failed in the third step. This was using 1.06 off Rootzwiki. I went to PSouza4's website and downloaded 1.07, and tried it again. Same thing.
Strangely my system (about phone) still says 5.5.893 (baseband CDMA_N_03.1c.57R ltdec_u_05.15.01), build number 5.5.1_84_DBN-21 so somehow I never got the 901 update. It stills says I'm on 2.3.4, but the exploit no longer works.
Any ideas?
If superuser is still installed can you go into it and check root status? Does this happen with every root app? Could you have maybe accidently denied TiB at the prompt or set Superuser to automatically deny apps? Try running rootchecker.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck
I went into SuperUser and it says TiB is still allowed. But when I run TiB it says root was denied.
Root Checker confirms: no root.
I tried 43V3R root and that failed too.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440047
Confirmed that PSouza4's one click root, 43V3R root don't work on this latest OTA I got 2 nights ago.
If someone can tell me what to grab I can do ADB dumps or whatever's needed.
I had that happen to me as well. Turns out for me, that on .893, the automatic script failed. Doing it using the manual guide here in the dev forum did work.

You can root 5.5.893 with this. Uses the oldschool zergrush.

Root [easiest way] 100% safe

First of all download the required file[http://www.mediafire.com/?8b1lt61sg3i6tu5]
You might need to install the USB Drivers for this, you can try by using the Drivers Installation (Located inside the zip file) or you can download Samsung Kies that contains the USB Drivers
You will also need to activate the Debugging on your Device, its easy
Open the setting menu, select the applications and the Development
Activate the USB Debugging and wait for the drivers to be installed
Wait for the drivers to install
Ok, good
Extract the zip file and open the folder
Double click the “root” and wait for the procedure
Done!
TIPS:
Inside the zip there is also some other programs
- shell : access the root shell of the device
- logcat: debug the device
- recovery: reboot into the recovery of the device

[ROOT] root for VS910ZV8 and V9 without downgrade

Well i was in development today for trying to find a way to root the latest firmware from LG that locks out a lot of the phone for flashers like me who dont use VZW service ne ways i have officially achieved root on VS910ZV8 and VS910V9 without having to downgrade it. Basically I used the LG Esteem Exploit found by djrbliss the link to his blog about the esteem and the zip is attached just execute run.bat and after a few reboots enjoy root without all the extra time and effort of downgrading
http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/15/re-rooting-the-lg-esteem/
Anyone try this yet?
Nope but I just spent an hour downgrading then re-rooting then upgrading again lol! I just saw this when I refreshed the page to get Broken out. Thanks for finding this though!! I'm sure it will help a lot of people!
I did
I actually did that monday when i recieved my replacment...didnt know there was issues rooting still..iv only used that one to root sence it was posted..work'd with 0 issues for me..was teathering again in no time
Yes this works fine.
may be a dumb question, but if you root with this and leave the stock recovery on, how would you go about unrooting without flashing a .tot and removing all traces of root?
i have always used mt's unroot .bat to unroot

From what I read in the .bat all it is doing it pushing the busybox file, the su file and the superuser.apk. So essentially, all you would have to do is delete those 3 files and you should be unrooted If I'm correct.

Try this:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/lgforum.com...inal/LG VZW_United_WHQL_v2.4.1.zip?1328216623
I was having a lot of driver issues and this took care of everything. It's the full pkg in an exe file. Good luck!
Edit: might have to try tapping the link two or three times

Have you tried the autorun from the phone that has the driver install included with it or look in the system folder and pull the iso and unrar it to get the exe to run
anybody able to cwm on after using this method? how'd you do it?
Polly could do the flash_image process and rename recovery from boot.p in the file system

If you don't have those options on the phone and computer can't communicate I made that mistake when i first got my phone too.
Works 100%
Great find. Just LGPNST back to v8 stock then ran the root and it worked like a charm.
Just ran this yesterday, worked like a charm. I didn't need to do any prep at all.

JB OTA Forgot to Update Superuser binaries but ES File Explorer has Root

I followed the steps here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33774480
But I forgot to update the binaries... actually I did not know I had to click where I need to click in order to update the binaries. I opened SuperUser up and it never said I needed to update binaries like Supersu does. ES File Explorer and Voodoo OTA still has root. Anyway I can fix this issue?
I tried "RestoreRoot.zip" that was posted and it says:
"Have drivers installed, phone connected, and USB Debugging enabled in Develope
r Options."
4371 KB/s (380532 bytes in 0.085s)
failed to copy 'Superuser.apk' to '/system/app//Superuser.apk': Permission denie

,3003(inet),3006(net_bw_stats)
If the above id shows 0 then you are rooted. Press any key to exit.
I have the same problem, either upgrade to 3.1.1 binaries and only has the voodoo root and titanium, we can do?
"Have drivers installed, phone connected, and USB Debugging enabled in Develope

ok, well then, i dont think its going to work, but here what ive done... it might help
Restored with vodoo OTA rootkeeper, saying that root is back ! but not really lol
I've had es file explorer already rooted, so, i just copied the binary files and reboot ... nada ! was having root permission but was denied everytime automaticaly, so i reeponned the es file explorer, and cannont be granted for root acces
i oppened up the super user app, and unavailable to acces root doing the update ......
superuser status was : rwxr-xr-x : conflict (showed in red) -binary : ok (showed in green) - path : ok (showed in green aswell)....
So, that is probably why it wont allow me root acces to succesfully re-update the su binary trough the native way of the superuser.apk
so here what i've done....
Re-used vodoo to reset the root to the old binairies (wich is actually enough for adb to work as root), i've then changed superuser.apk permissions that was actually resseted to :rw-r-x-r-- .... <--- WTF ????
So changed that to : rwxr-xr-x and then, i copied the su binary to the corect place, and boom, voila, was able to set binary permission and use it as usual .....
So my guess is if you guys wont have root on an explorer, adb will have with the old binairies restored from vodoo, so you should be able to change permissions to the /system/app/superuser.apk to : rwxr-xr-x and see if something magic occured that will let you update via superuser.apk in a native way so you wont need to copy/paste the binary manually !
But what i find odd is that you have a permissions denied !
did you tried it with the OLD binairies in place from voodoo directly inside adb shell
if you just type adb shell : ittl go in $ and if u type su (hit enter) you should now see the lasp part of command line protocol changing to : #
Right ?
then you should be able to change permissions of the superuser app ? right ?
or am i completely lost in the dust !?
Edit : well, if you want to keep root on an old leaked, its your thing, but i would recomand THIS tutorial instead cause you have a real ROM through OTA now.... dont know if it will change anything, but i followed this one !
Partial Root Restore
I was able to restore root to my phone after the 4.1.1 update using the information in this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911261
Basically, if you had a root backup before the update, you may still have partial root on your phone.
To verify...
adb shell
su
If you find yourself at the # prompt, not all hope is lost!
:fingers-crossed:
Regained root on my Atrix using this instructions
