If you're installing a new rom, ALWAYS do da factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and cache partition!
On the other hand, if you only want to install an "update" (new version) of the SAME ROM you already installed (MIUI for example), you don't need to do factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache is enough, copy and flash the updated rom and enjoy in the new version with all your data/apps/messages etc. there!

can u tell me what is stored in Dalvik cache?

if you're on stock roms, then going to cm/miui, do this:
go Recovery
-wipe dalvik cache
-wipe cache
-wipe data
-install the rom
-then it will reboot automatically(or after installation, reboot) then it will bootloop
-remove battery and put it back in, then do 3 button combo (recovery mode)
then install the rom again,
-optionally install kernels, etc
-reboot.
or if you're coming from a same rom, but new version, you don't have to wipe, just install the new version of rom.

I would recommend to never format boot, if not done correctly it may brick your phone.

Hi, I'm using nitrogen OS on my Redmi note 3. It got updated to 8.1.0(Oreo) through flashing from 8.0.0(Oreo). While doing so I didn't clear the necessary cache like dalvik, system in TWRP. Is it necessary to clear the cache in TWRP while upgrading in the android version?(Though I'm using same AOSP based nitrogen os for 8.0.0 & 8.1.0)

[Q] Dalvik cache to be wiped..??

When flashing new custom roms..
We wipe...via recovery select factory reset & wipe cache partition..!!
But do we also wipe dalvik cache before flashing together with the above step..??
What about after flash (i always factory reset/wipe cache partition) avoid force close error issues..
Can we select wipe dalvik cache after flash too (never tried just want to know if any harm will come.. will anything go wrong)
* if i did select all three reset/cache partition/dalvik > will it erase/wipe nandroid backup..??? *
For a wipe rom, I always backup, do a factory reset, flash rom, do another factory reset, boot, then wipe cache and dalvik cache. The dakvik cache is a temporary working area and can be wiped anytime, I clear both caches weekly or if I get any hiccups. Nandroid backups are stored on your sd card so dont get touched, but best to copy them to PC, just in case, keep the last 2 or 3

nandroid backup
So dalvik cache can be wiped any time...many thanks..
When i make nandroid backup via recovery mode, will android system only restore "last backup" or does it allow to choose "other backups"..???
(does it store multiple backups ? OR just one backup very last...
Thanks
You can choose which backup to restore. Standard practice is to wipe dalvik and cache BEFORE flashing.

[Q] wipe cache and data?

hello there!
i'm a new little fellah in the rom flashing world, so i'm a little afraid before doing anything, so here's the situation :
i have a galaxy mini, rooted, and cwm is perfectly installed.
i want to install this rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085347
In the description it's written to wipe data AND cache after every action.
I just have personally 2 thing to install : the rom and the gapps, that's all (no patch).
So i have to wipe cache and data before flashing the rom of course, and so my question is : do i have to wipe data AND cache after installing the rom? and then install the gapps, and then wipe again?
So should i do :
1) wipe data and cache
2) install from zip the rom
3) wipe data and cache
4) install from zip the gapps
5) wipe data and cache
6) reboot
Is that good? or am i doing a mistake anywhere?
thank you for your help !
normally this works
wipe data ,cache and dalvik cache
format system ( if going from stock to cm7 or vice versa)
install rom
install gapps
wipe data , cache
reboot
Sent from my GT-S5670 using xda premium
you can also wipe battery states but it's only optional, you dont have to but no harm in doing so.

installing RC1 using rom manager over original ROM

When installing CM 10.1 RC1 using rom manager over original ROM.
Do I need to clear some partitions manually or does rom manager do all for me?

For eliminating causes for some problems that may be appear is recommended to do:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe dalvick cache
- format system
Doing that, you have a clear fresh device for installing new software.

When you flash another rom I recommend wiping: Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache and System.
when you flash an update for that rom: wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache, Install update.
Stepts of installing a new rom:
1) Put the rom and gapps on your device
2)Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache and System
3)Flash the system and then the gapps
4)Reboot
Stepts of installing an update for the rom:
1)Put the updated file on your device
2)Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
3)Install updates
4)Reboot
thank u so much for ur best explanation:good::good:
