Weak signal after radio and ROM flash - HTC Incredible S

After the most recent stock update that added Sense 3 I started having intermittent radio problems. I had always been on stock and never fiddled with the firmware, radio, anything like that. The radio would randomly disconnect from the network and stay disconnected for a while, or I could get it back faster if I rebooted the phone or cycled flight mode. Using data often acted as a catalyst for the problem and I could reduce occurrences by using wifi when I'm at home. Total annoyance. I decided to try fixing it myself and I've found a lot of useful information here.
I first installed a couple different ROMs and found that after booting, there was no signal, so it was probably the radio. I had HBOOT 2.0 so I had to downgrade, use Revolutionary to get S-OFF, then start working with different radio versions. I haven't had any luck since.
Current setup:
Bought unbranded and unlocked from the UK. 900/1700/2100 model
Revolutionary HBOOT-6.13.1002
Baseband: 20.4802.30.0882U_3882.10.08.28_M
ROM: Virtuous Quattro RC2 (Android 4.0.2)
Network: 3 Sweden (UMTS 900/1200 network)
I've also had the same problem running Cyanogen 7.1 and Android Revolution HD 2.1.3. I had high hopes for ARHD since it said it specifically was designed for the radio I've flashed. I actually even went through and tried every single radio release from Gingerbread for the IncS. Same problem on all.
Strictly speaking it's not actually a no-signal problem, it's a very weak/malfunctioning signal problem. When I do a network scan I usually only see two of the three GSM networks here and most if not all 3G networks are missing. The few times my home network has actually shown up in the network scan list, I can't register on it. I get the "Temporarily unable to register on this network. Try again later." message.
I hope I've done enough searching and effort on my own here before posting. Needless to say I'll be grateful for any help I can get here. After many hours of reading, flashing, rebooting, reflashing, rinse and repeat, I'm looking for an end to this!

wow..i was having the same problem. totally forgot about the antenna in the back cover. i was going nuts flashing different radios wondering why i was getting only edge. i feel stupid. thanks

I had no idea the back cover made any difference at all. Thank you for pointing that out to me! I was seriously about to go buy an iPhone or something, but I remembered I loathe the keyboard in iOS
I'm all good now! Running radio .28_M with ICS and things are as they should be. At least throughout all this hassle I got my radio upgraded to a hopefully less-crashy version and I got some ICS up and running
Cheers guys!

Wifi problems

I bought a second-hand G1(no data plan) since I wanted to play with my phone. It ran 1.6 DMD64 stock with the newest radio; and it had WiFi problems.I did some research before purchasing and knew it could be flashed; so I tried flashing it to a modern ROM to see if that would solve the problems. After figuring out it was an American phone(I live in Holland) I managed to root it and flash CM6RC2. I now sometimes have a lot of reception; sometimes not. I tried installing WiFiReEnabler and WifiFixer; WifiFixer made connections overall a bit more stable; but half of the time I still don't have WiFi. I also tried to use my laptop's WiFi for my phone via USB; followed the instructions but failed. My phone managed to get semi-bricked 3 times in that period(stuck at G1 screen), and I tried flashing another ROM too; so I flashed CM 4 times. I'm using a Belkin N1 wireless router; switched channels, security and looked at my keyphrase.
The problems I have with WiFi:
- Not finding my router even though being quite close to it; happened only with 2 of the 5 times I flashed
- Finding my router but not connecting; happened 3 of the 5 times I flashed
- Saying that it's connected but not allowing me to browse; happened all times but WifiFixer occassionally fixes this
I'm still running CM6RC2 with Amon Ra recovery 1.7 on an American phone; my router is a Belkin N1 with firmware version 3.01.04 and hardware F5D8631-4 v3 with WPA-TKIP, broadcast SSID on, channel 4.
Is there a way that allows me to get stable internet on my phone without a data plan?
This could be either a hardware or software issue, not quite sure. Your options are listed below
1. Root and flash to a different more updated rom
2. Flash the newest radio(not sure if it effects wifi signal strength, forgot)
3. Open up the G1 and see if any connectors are loose.
Option 3 is probably out of the question, option 1 and 2 can be done by looknig into the rom bible(sticky) in the G1 dev thread, this will give you threads with new roms, how to install them etc, as well as flashing the new radio(if you have not yet done that)
I already flashed the newest radio, since I tried to install CM6 and in that guide I was instructed to flash the newest radio. I also obviously have installed CM6RC2 which is the newest version of CM.
I did read somewhere that more people had WiFi issues with CM6RC2 or deratives; I'll try running an older version of CM.
Edit: Doesn't work; at least I can't browse when I'm connected. Doing a nandroid restore right now; I'm intending to use Froyo.
In the case that doesn't work, how hard and dangerous would it be to open up my casing and look for those wires? It's second-hand, so warranty would likely not be a problem.
Thanks for answering anyway.
Is it possible that your router is using a different band?
I don't know about Holland, but sometimes different countries allow different wireless bands.
Try changing the channel on your router to something like channel 7 or 11, something varied from the norm.
Well. I found a solution. Connecting my old sitecom wl-167 which has no wireless N support seems to give me no problems.
(Holland has different channels then America, but my G1 was surprisingly already configured for Europe)
Thanks for your help anyway!
P.S. My XDA does seem to have some problems. "No route to host" when trying to post.
Edit: It appears it isn't 100% fixed; WiFi-fixer still solves it right now but it might not be the solution.
Edit 2: Well, WiFi-Fixer is able to fix my problems all of the time for now; but ocasionally I have WiFi for 10 seconds then 10 seconds no WiFi, et cetera.

Edit 3: It isn't threatening to my WiFi anymore. Thanks everyone who tried to help me.

[Q] Signal Issues

I have been having intermittent signal problems on my phone for several months now and it's extremely frustrating. I've read through quite a few threads trying to find a similar problem, but nothing seems to provide a solution. So here goes my feeble attempt to explain what's going on...
For starters, I am in Canada on the Telus network. The phone works fine when I am traveling between places but doesn't work at all whenever I am at work or at home. Other places seem to knock it out as well. It hasn't worked at work since I started having the connection problems back in February or March. The same goes for at home. Anytime I am in between the two, which is a five minute drive I can switch the airplane mode on and off and it will usually connect to the network. When the Network drops, I still have signal bars, but get the "emergency calls only" instead.
I am running CM 7.0.3, and have updated the radio to 5.08.00.04 as well as 5.12.00.08 both did not to anything(I am now back on .08). I was on CM 6.1 when the problems started, and have been updating through the release candidates up to the latest stable CM still with no luck on figuring out what is causing the problem. I have done full wipes, as well as installed different ROMs trying to find what's causing this.
Could the SIM card be the culprit? Even if it seems to work fine some of the time?
I'm completely out of ideas, and sick of not being able to use my phone, as an actual phone, while I'm at home or at work. Any suggestions or ideas/questions is appreciated to figuring out what is going on, I'll answer the questions as best I can.
Thanks,
Chad
I'm having the exact same problem as you: only "Emergency Calls" at places with thick walls (is that well said?), where I used to have good reception and where others (with same company) have a pretty decent signal. I really don't recall when this started, but also does occur with all radios and kernels I've tested so far.
I'm currently running CM 7.0.3 with radio 5.12.00.08 and kernel redstar 2.6.38.7-CFS.
Me three. I think its something to do with cyan 7 because its been since I went onto it that signals not been what it used to. Perma emergency only in my halls.

[Q] Mobile data connectivity issues, which radio?

Hi guys (and girls),
I'm going slightly mad trying to figure out a stable setup for my O2X. I have been switching between the latest CM7 nightlies, and MoDaCo FR19. In general, CM7 gives me quite frequent black screens, and FR19 seems quite stable. However, there is one issue that is present in both ROMs.
I am unable to get a stable mobile data connection when I switch from WiFi. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. To get it to work again, it sometimes works to switch to 2G only (and possibly back again). I have tried several different radios recently: 218, 606, and 622, all with the appropriate RIL. The mobile data connection for 218 drops in and out at random without any clear pattern. For the other two radios switching on or off 2G only seems to achieve stable connection. However, it does not actually seem to affect whether I get a 3G or 2G signal. The display can say H or G, even when 2G only is checked. Bluetooth did not work correctly with 606.
To top everything off, the GPS does not seem to behave consistently for a all the different radio versions.
I guess that people have different experience with different radios, so which radio are the guys in Norway using? Do I really have to slog through every released radio and spend the day checking each one of them? Can I expect to find a radio/from combination that blacks to give me a stable GPS and mobile data connectivity, as well as good WiFi?
I know this has been discussed numerous times before, but people never seem to reach any conclusions. I'm just looking for advice on how to proceed to fix my problem.
I'm on cm7 .77 and i honestly havent had a blackscreen since i flashed it (yesterday morning) + battery is good now. For me this is the most stable nightly so ill stick with it for 2 weeks on my holiday )
Edit: bb .502 ril 218(i think) dont have any problems with network switching btw

You probably have to, yes. This sounds more like a problem with the specific coverage in your area and how the phone interacts with the cell-towers than an actual problem with the phone. You may be in an area with weak signals from several stations, you may be in an area suffering from sudden bursts of noise, there could be a lot of reasons for why this is happening.
First thing I'd try is to upgrade to the latest official firmware (10C - 0622 for Norway), just to have a baseline for comparison. In theory this firwmare (and baseband) has recently been validated by the norwegian carriers, and should have the best chance of success.
Then you should probably do a manual scan (in phone settings) for networks, and pick one manually.
Also try using the INFO menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and see if choosing a specific protocol helps.
If you're still unable to maintain a stable connection, I'd say that'd be grounds for returning the phone for a replacement.
Weak advice, I know, sometimes there just aren't any quick solutions.

Sort of. In this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035041 you'll find complete ROMs of the previous versions. Install one of those with SmartFlash, then run the LG Mobile Update tool to get the latest.

Okay, I see, downloading now. So it is good enough to use one of the smartflash files, I don't have to use nvflash?

No, you don't have to use NVFlash. The advantage of using the smartflash method is that you get a completely "factory fresh" phone, with all the stock content present (movies, music, pre-installed apps) and you're sure to get a matching baseband and ROM.
Note that you have to flash both files, both the baseband and the ROM. The LG update tool won't update if you have a "new" baseband on an old ROM.
::Trym
So the firmwares from that post do not include the baseband? Anyway, I'm currently running baseband 405, so I guess this is sufficient to get the new update. And the new update will then overwrite everything to the latest official version, both ROM and baseband, correct?

Yes, it does. Each firmware pack comes with TWO files, the baseband and the ROM. To make sure you avoid any trouble, just flash them both, though, as you say, you can probably stay on the one you have, as yes, the LG Mobile Update tool will overwrite both the baseband and the ROM with the new versions.

Flashing of old firmware, with subsequent upgrade to latest release for Norway is complete.
I got version V10c, with baseband 1035.21_20110622, kernel 2.6.32.9. My mobile data seems to be enabled as soon as I get mobile coverage (which admittedly is poor right where I live). Even though it pains me, I guess I should leave it as stock for a day or so to see how it behaves.
I guess rooting it shouldn't affect performance in any way?
My initial experience is that it is much more snappy than the stock firmware that the phone came with, but time will show

Not to my knowledge, but I'd still advise you to wait a few days while sorting out the connection issue. Not that I think rooting it would affect that one way or another, but if you can't get it work as it is, you can return the phone in the state it is now, factory fresh.

It certainly is. It also *stays* snappy over time, which can't be said for the 10a/b versions.

The first test drive with the new firmware has been completed. On the way out it switched to mobile data flawlessly, but a longer drive it started falling out and reappearing for only short periods. When we stopped at the destination seemed to stabilise with a 3G connection again.
For the return trip I selected use only 2G network. The network connection remained stable for the entire journey.
I will have to test more, but the conclusion seems to be that it has trouble switching between the 2G and 3G networks when moving. I will try the same trip with a Telenor SIM card, and with different combinations of enabling 2G and 3G modes.
By the way, what is the difference between forcing 2G in the regular settings menu and in the special information menu?

The 2G only setting in the phone menu equals the "GSM only" setting in the INFO-menu. I'm far from an expert in these matters, this thread has an overview: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=675136& of what the different modes do.
::Trym
More testing seems to indicate that as long as i leave "use 2G only" check, my mobile data connection seems to be pretty stable. It even switches between 2G and 3G, although apparently a bit more conservatively.
I guess I get to keep my phone anyway
Now for some rooting...
Just an update on the results from my testing. The second time I went out my mobile connection never appeared. This was with only 2G checked in the settings menu. In the Info menu, this corresponded to GSM only.
I then changed it to GSM auto (PRL), and then I got my intermittent mobile data again. I then change it to WCDMA preferred, and my data connection seems to be stable for now. This apparently requires much more testing...
F another chapter in the connectivity saga. Having WCDMA preferred selected in the Info menu, things mostly work, although the data connection drops sometimes.
Another problem I'm noticing with the stock ROM is that it usually is unable to reconnect to my home WiFi network when it comes within range. I have the money was selected to reconnect. Sometimes I even find it disabled in the list.

[Q] My IncS completely disconnects, often!

First of all, let me start of what I've tried doing, in order.
New SIM-card, factory reset, unlock + root, custom ICS (VirtousQuattro).
None of the above solved my problem, it still persists! The problem is, the phone disconnects completely from the network (no bars) and I can't manually search for a new provider due "active package transmission" or something like that, it stays disconnected for 1-3 minutes and then reconnects. It happens fairly often, like once for every 5 times I try using the phone. I haven't noticed the problem when being connected to a WiFi, so I'd assume the problem is related to an issue between the phone and the network.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any idea how to solve it?
Have you tried flashing a new Radio? I can't see how that would differ from flashing a custom ROM, but might be worth a shot?

Yes Naforcee, I have exactly the same problem. And it never happens while using wifi as you said.
It started immediately after I updated to Sense 3 / Android 2.3.5 from HTC.
What was the version of Android in your previous Rom? I had issues when I was on Froyo and went to Gingerbread without flashing a new radio.

Don't think it's a physical problem, I have perfect connection and it just dies out for about 2 min until it reconnects, and I can't search for network when it's down due to active packet transfer..
Could try a new SIM card. Might not fix it, but worth a shot - I've seen this posted as a fix for other people.
I used to have this problem on certain radios on the Desire Z, after flashing around a bunch of radios to try all of them. Stuck with one and it went away, so it was software for me.

Try flashing this radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471861 using the ADB method. If that doesn't help I recommend doing a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM. There are a lot of different custom ROMs for IncS which can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463
I personally like Niks ROM and Android Revolution HD.
Looks like rom installation issue.
My son's Inc-S having a similar problem to the OP, but more severe. A couple of weeks ago he entered airplane mode with all behaving normally, but since exiting airplane mode at the end of the flight he hasn't been able to register on the network (voice or data). We've tried:
fiddling with all the network settings
change sims (all sims work on my Inc2, none work on his IncS)
cleaning the antenna connections
reboot
factory reset
flashing new ROM (Android Revolution HD 2.3.0)
flashing new radio (3805.10.03.29_M)
So far, no satisfaction. We're still seeing no bars of reception (with an X) in the notification area, and don't have the option to manually or automatically register with any network operator (although several occasionally show up as options under "Search Networks"). We usually get the error message, "Unable to search for network while packet connection is active" when trying to select a network. Funny thing is, mobile network data has been shut off on his phone for the past month so the packet connection is definitely not active (wifi is on). Based on a network signal analyzer app, the phone is receiving the same mobile network signal as mine (-65 to -70 db) when they are side-by-side, so the problem does not appear to be in the antenna. The phone works just fine using wifi but is useless as a phone.
Any ideas about what to try next?

[Q] Lost stable WiFi after updates, can't get it back

Hello everyone! This is my 3rd day of tinkering with the phone and since I can't handle it I'm asking for help. I'm a noob who read a lot, tried and apparently messed up.
I bought a new HTC One from T-Mobile in Poland, branded with CID T-MOB101 and Hboot 1.44. Everything worked fine but the phone still had Android 4.1.2 and no update available. I decided to get rid of the brand and get international stock version to be able to receive OTAs. I unlocked bootloader with htcdev.com, installed TWRP 2.6.3.3, achieved s-off using revone, changed CID to HTC___001 and used RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.7_Radio_4A.13.3231.27_10.31.1131.05_release_310878_signed . My phone did not see OTA so I applied updates manually in following order:
OTA_M7_UL_JB_50_HTC_Europe_1.29.401.12-1.28.401.7_release_315849_signedp7vl8dqsvls0h1t0.zip
OTA_M7_UL_JB_50_S_HTC_Europe_2.24.401.1-1.29.401.12_P2_release_324936_signedma8j1sa3e2o09s35.zip
OTA M7 UL JB 50 S HTC Europe 2.24.401.8-2.24.401.1 Release 331108tottoh71qygw07hf
OTA M7 UL JB43 SENSE55 MR HTC Europe 3.62.401.1-2.24.401.8 Release 338160gxmo5sd9337kadux
After each OTA i tried to look for updates in phone's settings and found only two little updates (few MBs) that did not lead to bigger ones; I believe it was after first and third OTA.
After all this I started having WiFi issues. The phone stayed connected to my WiFi the whole time but after few minutes pages would not load, games would not connect. Resetting the connection would help for another few minutes (or less). Factory reset seemed to help a bit, the WiFi was able to keep the connection yet it 'paused' from time to time. By 'pause' I mean lose the connection for a second and regain right after, e.g. I could connect to games such as Hay Day, but after a ~minute I would lose the connection and have to reconnect (in game, without touching phone's settings) and redo last X seconds of game.
Because of that I went and applied ARHD 31.6 custom rom and hoped for the best. The situation remained the same so I flashed ARHD 41.0, yet the problem still remains.
In the end I downgraded my Hboot so it goes back to 1.44 and used the RUU I used the first time, after that I changed CID back to T-MOB101 and applied my full backup I saved by booting (prior to flashing) TWRP before I changed anything in the phone.
I did full wipe every time I changed the system and I did factory reset multiple times.
As of now I am on my backup with
Android 4.1.2
Version 1.29.111.16 CL175271 release-keys
Radio 4A.13.3231.27_10.31.1131.05L
and my WiFi is unstable. I can browse internet, watch YouTube or do things like that, yet I cant play games requiring constant internet connection, such as Hay Day.
So my question is: What do I do to get it to work as it used to at the beginning? I would prefer having the newest Android version, but at this point I simply need a working phone so if anyone has a solution that would work on my current system or by flashing a new one I will be extremely grateful.
I've been having the same issue. Thought it was just me because I've looked for a solution ever since the Jelly Bean update. Mine is a Sprint One and worked perfect with the original firmware. Once updated wifi connected and would randomly drop for a few seconds and reconnect. I've noticed it's router specific. I had a Linksys wrt160 that had a problem at home, but at the office the Cisco E2500 works fine. I swapped my home out with an Asus RT-N12 that has the problem too, but not as bad. Was hoping KitKat would fix the issue, but it didn't. I've worked with HTC support for a while and they said the new rom's have updated wifi drivers so there must be some compatibility issue with it.
Think the best bet is a custom rom that has all the new kitkat features but the old wifi (and BT since the new one doesn't load the contacts in my car) drivers. Someday, I'll take the time to figure out making my own rom.

For now I'd recommend contacting HTC support and create a ticket so they know this problem is more widespread. That way all the new roms out there would have a working WIFI driver.
thanks

That's odd, when the first tier support couldn't figure it out they opened a ticket for me with higher level techs and they had me save a bunch of capture logs when the drops happen to email them. The carrier would be useless on this.
