Yes it happens in overclocking, in multitasking, sometimes when playing games or when gps, wifi etc. are all open. Just set default CPU freq. and try not to open too many apps altogether your temperature should lower. Oh, and if you have 3G enabled, disabling could increase battery life and reduce temperature

42 degrees is not TOO HOT!! That chip can get up to 110-130 degrees before failing so dont worry about it. If your phone gets a little bit warm just lower the CPU clock speed. I would not worry about that temperature!!
Well I think it's frustating. So,I set 613mhz for normal use. I only set 749 when playing games.

When my phone battery get too hot(37-42 degree celcius)i usually open my phone's battery cover and put a fan behind my phone..and it help to reduce the temperature especially when i play games..

Ya of course i know!!! If your battery gets warm, normally what i do is stop what im doing but this isn't what most people will do. Take off the back cover and give your battery some room to breath. The samsung s2 is not built very well hit heat in mind. Its because of the CPU/GPU they generate a lot of heat. The heat syncs for them goes around the battery and this in turn makes your battery warm. As phones are getting faster i wonder how they are going to deal with the excess heat!? The CPU and GPU are to the left of your camera which probably everyone has felt mass heat from that area. I usually keep my phone under clocked to 800MHz for normal use (sending messages, phone calls, browsing the internet etc). Its really smooth and stable. When i play games i do put the clock speed back up to 1200MHz. I usually get 3-4 and sometimes 5 days battery life

i got my temp up to 52C.. too hot.. i was startled and quikly removed the battery.. haha.. i thought my X8 was gonna die.. but, it still works fine..
i set the CPU to the same freq as u use. but it happend when i used USBtethering, and connected to internet on 3G.. the temp also increases when i use my phone browsing online on 3G.. but i turn 3G off when the temp reaches 40C..
So with OCing and all, what's the safest max temp of our x8/w8?
I never let mine go above 41 degrees c. How far can i go above that safely (not harming anything but the battery)?

Hey,
I've been running the 3G Mobile Hotspot app on my Milestone running 2.2. I'm aware that the app isn't meant for the phone, but it's running very hot and i'm worried that it might damage the phone. I'm sure its taking a hit on battery life too but that isn't much of a problem as the heat.
So thanks in advance to anyone who can answer.

I noticed the same heat issue, but i ran my phone (plugged in and overclocked too 900) for 1 week straight in this mode with 4 laptops connected to it (spring break) with no issue.
I guess it may reduce the lifespan of the phone, but who will be running this phone in 2 years?

Ah I see. Thats good to hear. I was wondering something, while it was lugged in was it charging the battery up too? Or was it using it at a fast rate that it didn't charge at all?

CPU Tuner does more and uses less resources than SetCPU, I'm pretty sure.
Even when I disabled all features of SetCPU, it would remain in memory so I uninstalled it.
I only tried it just to see what the fuss was about, since I was already using CPU Tuner.
I can use a different governor in different profiles which get activitated with different triggers.
I guess that sounds complicated but it's a real easy to understand interface.
With a couple of recent added features, I no longer need Juice Defender
In reality, you can use it to replace SetCPU, Juice Defender and Toggle2g/3g.
And the thing is like a camel.. it barely drinks anything.

Im using Juce Defender to take care about my CPU speed. U think CPU Tuner is better? Maybe i sould get it if its so awesom...

Just standby charging my note would let it reach 40 to 52c and stay there even if i do browsing.. but when i play some games like "major mayhem" and GTA III, it skyrockets to 66c and then i chicken out and let it cool down again.. lol...
If i play without the charge plugged it, its like 35ish..

my note usually get upto 55°c while charging when i am doing some other stuff on it.. so as to cool it down i remove the charger and put my note into freezer within 5 minutes it comes back to 28°C
Edit: my fone reached a maximum of 61°C.. still working properly

I would not do that because you will get moisture forming inside your note that could damage it, or at least change the water sensing stickers so you warranty would be void, if it had to go back and be repaired.

My Note has once reached 64*C while charging.
Some app locked the GPU and GPU to highest perf states and I had my Note inside a leather flip case so it got rather hot.
No damage done as far as I see, battery still holds charge like a champ.

well, it is not a only about threshold after which battery would fry, but important is: the longer at high temp or the higher temps the battery is exposed to the shorter its lifetime and faster performance (capacity?) decrease.

My Note remains below 40 when I'm charging. I never use it while charging.
If you have old battery with swelling, you should be careful with battery temperature.
A little vicious battery will come out of original battery's belly and set your phone on fire.
You don't want it to explode in your pants, do you ?

Put it in the Microwave to cool down. Max temperature 51 degrees.

You don´t have to worry about your devices temperature, I assure you that they are really durable
..I´ve managed to cook my SGS up to 62C by playing some heavy games while OC-ed
..but I would strongly recommend you not to do that, because it´s not very good for your phones health or your fingers. (you´ll get burned)
PS.yes, my phone still works very well if you were wondering.
As you can see in the left bottom corner of the battery widget there is temperature showing in Celsius and on the opposite side battery percentage (very similar to the phones temperature LOL )

So I'll join topic too cos im woried about my phone I just got it few days ago, and installed stock JW4 and semaphore kernel. On idle temperature is about 28-33*C and when using WiFi for some downloading its about 41-45*C. I plugged it in with USB in lap, and used 3G network and wifi hotspot and it went up to 55*C in few mins. Got worried and plug it off USB. Also I dont like it cos display is also warm to touch, not only back. So guys is this normal? I had Samsung Galaxy 3 before and didnt have such heating... Thanks for answers!

Absolutely it can decrease your x8's life due damages to chip set & overhead.(+high battery drain)
anyways overclocking more than 729 MHz is not recommended (by me)
& over clock to 864 just in benchmarking

Firstly you can't burn phone with overclocking.
Seconldy, stability of cpu depends on the level of batery. For example: My phone runs 806mhz without any problem when batery is fully charged. When baterry level is about 60% my phone is much more unstable. So try to set this frequency when your battery level is low.

Do a big smile, because you are lucky. And this is normal, the 7x27 chips can handle 8-900 MHz without any problem, but the most x8 owner have low quality SoC with 600 MHz, the high quality chips marked and sold as 7x27T with 800MHz default clock (you can find it in low end galaxy models and other phones what equipped with 7x27 but the default clock is 800 MHz).
Wait while the battery level is only 10-15% and burn the phone with games/benchmarks. If the phone not freeze while the battery turn to empty, you can use this frequency (when the battery level is low, the cpu got lower voltage, this is normal, the difference not significant, only few mV but sometime this is enough to make the phone unstable).

i used 864MHz when battery was at 7% and i did antutu benchmark score was about 3780...it's stable also with very low battery
anyway the score wasn't so good i guess because sdcard is really bad
i will post screenshot of battery and antutu as soon as i go again at low batter

I dont think theres any life drop on the cpu when overclocking too much - contrary to what people believe. Ive oced dozens of cpus and havent seen one burn and die from that. All modern chips will simply reset if they cant handle it.
My shakira can easily handle 800+ so its always running at these levels since i got it. And yea, its better at benchmarks like this

The ROM already had the module, but it wasn't provisioned for in hw_config because of possible instabilities. All I did was to insmod it via Terminal Emulator just to see if the overclock was possible, but the system crashed almost instantly. When the ROM was still fresh, it actually managed to work, but everything was extremely slow and laggy. My idea is either that the stock kernel or the ROM just don't do that well with overclocking, so I just abandoned the concept completely. Besides, I'm satisfied with the performance anyway. No need for perfectionism here
Hi, I overclocked my One to 2.16 GHz (CPU) and 450 MHz (GPU)... when I play heavy games I reach really hot temperatures, the highest I get was 56.5 ℃ (133.7 ℉)... My question is: can the phone handle temperatures like these, or I risk to "fry" it?
P.S.: Sorry for my bad english!

Also wondering...in comparision videos of galaxy s4 vs the htc one i see the galaxy s4 starts apps faster and loads maps faster ingame.
Maybe this makes the difference or makes the one even faster?
Someone should do a video.

True, there really is no point in overclocking right now. Seeing as we can max out everything basically.

It is indeed dangerous to pressure your phone for a long period of time at those levels. If I want to play games I fire up my Xbox.

mate this is not a PC... it doesnt have the tolerances to hold such a high overclock. replace the heatsink with a noctua or something like i have in my pc below then you can overclock as much as you want. Dont cry the day your phone stops working

No, I'm not, lol. If I play with the phone unplugged the battery goes down too quickly.
Anyway, I heard that HTC tests their devices at hot temperatures, and I know that when a phone overheates too much, it reboots automatically, like a PC. It's never happened to me, so I think it's stable for now.

I think you should bump it down to 1.9 GHz and undervolt it a tad, and be sure to play unplugged, no matter what the battery is like. If you're finding the battery poor, I assue you that I find most games work fine at 1.1GHz ( Power Saving mode ON) with only neglible slower loading times (some games will take 10 seconds longer to load, but the battery is much improved). Turning your brightness down will also help to reduce those temperatures and increase the battery life while gaming.
In hamdir's gaming thread he did a test that showed underclocking the cpu didn't affect gaming (same as overclocking) since the gpu continued to run at 400mhz (or 450 when overclocked). Either way there is no need to really burn the thing at 2.16 unless you plan on using aftermarket cooling lol
