Project: Droid 2 MOBO into Droid 1 - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I will be doing this in the next week. I have a droid 2 on the way and will be documenting the process. Droid 1 will be pulled apart first.
Update: Waiting on a tool kit I ordered from ebay.

Awesome
This sounds really cool. Keep up posted and let us now how your progress goes! Good luck!

Saw a thread on it which died off, and even though I believe ill lose the unlocked bootloader it still will be a worthy upgrade. Ill be swapping the camera and keyboard as well. First steps are pulling droid 1 motherboard.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out as well! I prefer the internals of the D2, but the externals of the D1
It is weird, because I like the way the D3 looks, but from what I've seen of the upcoming D4, it looks like another 'meh' design. Oh well...

Hardest part is pulling both phones apart. Slow and steady is what its going to take.

Any progress on this? I was just thinking of doing this but I'm doing research on it.
iFixit seems like a great resource.

Backed out. Ended up selling the droid 1 and have a droid 2 pulled apart right now because of broken screen. I may just part the whole thing.

Hahah this seems to happen to everyone of these threads.

Yeah, it was going to be a fun little project, but so is learning guitar, taking care of my five month old daughter, going to work and moving into a new house.

Agreed, it's the type of project I'd like to do personally but would immediately disqualify as there are far better ones and I shouldn't complicate my phone-life anymore than it already is

If anyone needs parts I have brand new droid 2 parts minus the lcd.

Droid2(A955) Motherboard in Droid1(A855)

Seen a thread somewhere on the net about this and thought I'd post it in this section seeing as how it would be an accessory upgrade I suppose. If anybody has any more info or specs on this let me know and let's get it up on here for reference. I'd like to give it a try and see if it will bring better speeds and performance for the A855. I'll keep my search up again and try to get the info on here.
Success
Ok guys and gals,I have tracked down some info on putting a Motorola D2 (A955 or A956) motherboard into a D1. It has been done and I'm posting the sites for the breakdown and info on it showing that it can be done. I just got a good used D2 off of EBay this morning for $50 and supposedly the screen doesn't work on it. If I can't get the screen to work I will implant the D2 motherboard into my D1 and possibly the keyboard as well. The designs are exactly the same and everything fits. I hope you all find this informative and hope somebody will give it a try as well! Enjoy!

If droid 2 to droid 1 is possible, can I have a droid 2 keyboard for droid 1?
That is, put my droid 1 motherboard into a droid 2 lower body, and remains the droid 1 screen?
Any sites with the 2 to 1 switch working with photos or videos?
anyone here on forums that done this?
No I have not found any videos yet but I will make one when I get ready to tear apart my D1. I have had my D2G torn apart about 2 months but have been busy. I'll let you all know when I begin.

Will it work with a global? does'nt that need extra space for the sim slot?
This is very interesting... might be well worth doing. Please post updates when/if you get this underway.
Just out of interest why wouldn't you just replace the screen in the D2 with the screen from your D1?
What implications will changing the hardware like this have for software compatibility?

Hi. I believe this would not be an issue as I have swapped motherboards from my Motorola Milestone (GSM) to a Motorola Droid (CDMA) and it fit perfectly fine. Put my sim on and worked great. I dont have any experience with the Droid 2 and D2G though, so I'm just guessing really.
I'm looking to do this with a milestone and a d2g. I can't seem to find any milestone 2 on ebay but I see tons of d2g for cheap.
Also does anyone know how to switch the home and back becouse there in a different place on the d2g. I think there's a button replace app but I'm not sure

it seams that putting a droid 2 global motherboard in a milestone will not work. every time i try to turn on the milestone only the soft keys light up and nothing else happens. i also tried the opposite to see if i put something together wrong or broke a cable and with the motherboard of the milestone in the droid 2 global i got the same problem only the soft keys light up.
Will be doing this.

Droid2G and Droid1 under construction!
Hey guys,I've been attending college and working and tending to my kids lately and havent checked in on this in a while. My droid 1 processor just took a crap on me yesterday and I am now undergoing the transformation of the two Droids. I am essentially using the lower half(keyboard) from my Droid 2 Global, and the upper half(the LCD Screen, and digitizer) from my Droid 1 and going to inculcate them together. I will take pics along the way as I have no way of taking video except with my HTC Hero200. God I need to buy a video camera already! Thanks for keeping up with this thread and I look forward to giving you all the info as soon as I'm done!
Unlocking the Milestone or Droid 2 Global
Usually to unlock a GSM phone you can just call Verizon OR Motorola directly if your brave enough and ask them for the unlock code. I am in the military and always tell them I'm going overseas and need the unlock code so that I can take it with me. They usually don't ask a lot of questions and give me the code with no problem. Just thought I'd try to help out.

Would you buy an Revo 2 Based on this link?

Interesting when I just did a search for LG Revolution 2.
I came across a link that I had to Google Translate. It's a long link due to the need to translate from whatever language it was in. (Sorry, I didn't care to figure that part out)..
EDIT: It was originally Spanish.

The Specs Are NICE and the photo's are included. At least what I hope to be the actual photo's. 1.5Ghz Dual Core?? Nice.. I want one!
What do others think about this page and such? Real or Not Real? Seems so, but interesting I can't see to come across the same in English....
I though it would be fun to start a new thread on this as there are even more rumors posted around the web that the Revo 2 is due for October 20th, stated also on this following page, dated 08/30/2011:
http://www.lg-phones.org/lg-revolution-2-visits-the-fcc-in-the-form-of-vs920.html
Sorry if this was already posted. Otherwise, though this would be a good thread to start on some Revo 2 Hype.
I also came across this (LG Revo 2 VS920 Accesories Page.)

While the supposed specs are nice, I do not see myself going LG again. I have not owned a samsung or moto phone. The razr is pretty seksay and the nexus is well, nice and straight android... I like the idea of an AOSP phone. Tough call. Might consider it if LG released it with android 4. I will for sure be waiting till a month or so after the release of any future phone I may purchase. See what kind of development community forms and what issues may present themselves. They will need to release it soon or they will be to late to the party against some solid competitors.
1. Razr
2. Vigor
3. Nexus Prime
4. insert all the others I did not name.

I like the RAZR but I saw an article. Might be able to find it, will edit if I do or not. From what the video in the article say it's just the Bionic repackaged (with maybe a better screen? Don't remember) and you can't take the battery out that saddens me. Battery pops are sometimes the only way to do some things on these phones. The Nexus is the one I want but I saw another article saying that it comes in 16 and 32gb internal and it's not known if you can have an SD card (My main reason for disliking the iPhone). Also, it's not known if the battery will come out of that phone either. I don't know much about the Vigor so I will still my fingers for now.
Yeah I couldn't find them... Sorry History is full of a bunch of articles I've been reading tonight
Looks like the Revo 2 did go to a 3 button system which looks like will be the standard for Ice Cream Sandwich.. if the links are correct that is. Still I am in love with the Droid Razr.. sorry LG I was a Moto guy before and pretty sure I will be again some day!!
Anything with "Razr" attached to it usually sends up red flags for me. Have you ever seen anyone who owned the original Razr that still had a decent looking phone 6 months down the road? Yeah, me neither. The last thing I need is a $600 phone that falls apart if it hits a pillow from a drop of 12 inches.
My requirements on my next phone will probably be: NVidia architecture, 4G, and a 4+" screen. A year+ is a long time in the mobile industry, so let's see what they bring to the table.

Droid 4 in 2.5 weeks? Are you ******* kidding me?

http://www.zimbio.com/New+Mobile+Ph...Verizon+Leaks+Support+Motorola+Droid+4+Launch
No wonder Hashcode is like the ONLY Dev working on CM7 for this phone. I can't believe they'd release the D4 6 months after the D3. Such BS.
.... That is why a Verizon stuff sell me his droid 3 last week ......
I purchased the Droid3 on the day it was released in July and I'm furious. I'm sure people who purchased it a month ago are going ballistic now that they are out of the return window. Can't believe this is being released in two weeks. I'm about 90% ready to pay the ETF and switch to Straight Talk and get out of contracts for good. I can get practically any phone available US or imported and use it on ST.
I know the service probably pales in comparison to Verizons but at $80/month for 24 months, there should be more of a protection in future-proofing phones. Checked on Verizon for trade-in value, $80...
Looks like a razor with a keyboard, kinda ugly imho, i can't see this coming out too soon.
Anyways locked bootloader which will take even more months to be come usable, same specs as the droid 3 with maybe 1gb of ram and a 1.2 cpu, not worth an upgrade at all.

I find it amusing that people are surprised by this. As soon as the Droid 3 came out I knew it would be followed by a 4g version not long after. I also don't understand why people are upset about it. Your phone doesn't automatically become worse when this phone launches. And anyone who thought the Droid 3 was going to get good dev support was out of their minds. We're super lucky to even have hash. Either way I can't wait to get a Galaxy Nexus. Totally done with Motocrap. 32gb card still doesn't work for music.
People, it's Motorola. Like any other corporation, they want some way to get more money, and if they need to release the first 4G/LTE slider phone, then they want to do it as fast as they can..

I'm in the same boat. I've had a DX and now a D3. Screw Moto, I'm going to break the keyboard mapping file, take this piece back as my 2nd return, pull the same shenanigans for a 3rd return, and then flip $#!+ about this phone being a turd and get a GNex. I want pure Android from it's creator, not this MotoBull.
I knew this would happen.. I was pissed that much better phones were released within a week after this phone was released... Personal preference is now key to buying phones these days. Technology is only advancing FASTER meaning something twice as good will be released within weeks of what the best is now. 2 years ago we had a 550mhz D1, year later the speed and ram doubles with the D2, not quite a year passes and now dual core is standard. Less than 6 months and quadcore phones will make the D4 comparable to owning a D1. All I have to really say is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Luckily we still have Hash;who is btw doing an awesome job. Another thing we have in our favor is that the D3 & Bionic are so similar, so hopefully we can piggyback alot of ROM's, Mods, & Themes.

Assuming you bought from VZW, you have a 30 return period. You're in luck.
I've also read about this yesterday, it appears that the gsm and removable back had been removed as well. Guess tone to move to a bionic

I wont have 4G service where I am for a while, so having a 4G radio is more of a hassle at the moment. I refuse to buy a phone with a non-removable battery, its one of the reasons I stay away from the iPhone. The Droid 4 looks like it still has Gingerbread on it. I'm not so sure what people are mad over.
i just GOT my Droid 3, WTF motorola

Random reboots.

*no need to comment problem resolved thank you*
kinda pissed im on my third d3. 1st one random reboot problems sent it back got a refurbished one. 2nd one headphone jack stoped working. 3rd one refurbished once again. this 3rd one that i got came with a dead pixle yes annoying but i lived with it also sliding mechinism scratched the gloss yes annoying i lived with it random reboots ok problem. i know i can fix it but i dont feel like spending the time to do it. ive been at it since the original droid custom roms kernels all that fun stuff and i would like to start developing not there yet but im not an idiot. my plan is to call verizon and get a droid 4 but i havent decided if i want to yet the only problems i see with the d4 are no removable battery/locked bootloader/motoblur. locked bootloader could possibly eventually be unlocked who knows. so i can cross out bootloader i can deal. motoblur i can just run the .sh or something to remove the bloat an get a better rom. so cross off motoblur. no removable battery thoughts?
im not asking for help fixing it because i know i can and no its not as easy as an .sbf at this point.
i know my information isnt perfect but i had my original droid for what 3 years? one not 2 of them one, and that thing runs beautifully. unlocked bootloader/removable battery/sturdy heavy. why don't they make em like they used to? moto blur free
so excuse my grammar and such im kinda ranting cause of the time ive spent working on it and im kinda angry but now i need to decide if i should get the droid 4.
minus how to fix my droid 3 cause im going to but im ya LOL scatter brain
thoughts on non removable battery?
your opinions and thoughts are valued.
*no need to comment problem resolved thank you*
If you're getting random reboots you may wanna try rooting and putting a custom bootstrap on there and wiping cache and delvik. Also there are some ROMs w\o Blur and you can choose between it or not. But the Blur isn't too bad at all once you get past the Verizon crap. I run Liberty and it's just Blur and Android, no Verizon crap except for My Verizon.
For the reboots, see if it still does it with no sd card in. I had read that there was a directory that could be causing it.
For the battery, do you carry a backup battery with you now? If not, who cares if you can take it out? My D1 I had multiple backup batteries, and I used them. My D3 I haven't had to use my backup yet, it is big enough to get me through the day, and the D4 has an even bigger one (course there's always the 4G to suck up all that power)

My Droid 3 only reboots itself, if I leave it in Airplanemode for 8 hours or so. Then it reboots automatically. When not in Airplanemode it never reboots itself.
Maybe this helps?
thanks all its decided. im now getting my 4th refurbished droid 3. hopefully its not a pos again.
Im having the same issue lately. Ill try the suggestions here tonight when I get off work and let you know how it goes.

Spoke with VZW Today about ICS and Bionic

Called VZW today to replace my Bionic due to a Charging issue with the device. After informing (Tech Support Rep) aka the department that issues out replacement phones that my Bionic once plugged onto the charger it discharges. in order to get the battery to charge i have to do a "battery pull" at least twice. Last week I went into a VZW store thinking it was my extended battery had it replaced for a new one and still the same issue persist. After explaining this the Rep shipped out a replacement. He seemed pretty cool through out the conversation so I went ahead and asked about the Bionic and Android 4.0 and how upset I was that last week I read a post online that the list of Verizon phones to get ICS and the Bionic wasn't on that list mind you I also have a Xoom LTE so I threw that out there too!! so then he said hold on let me look, he didn't place me on hold i could hear him typing away i guess looking for the info on his end and he confirmed that the Bionic will be getting ICS indeed and so will the Xoom LTE be he didn't say when. let's see how much of this is true.......I wish i had something more solid to give you guys I tried!!!!!!
Well there is a soak test going on

that's embarrassing but unfortunately not surprising. so many developers have jumped ship because the Bionic was such a disappointment. Then a month later, the Razr was released. I've said it before and I'll say it again. VZW and MOTO screwed all of us who waited for the delayed release of the Bionic. Now they are screwing us over again. The next update will probably be .904 (not ICS). the current status for ICS is still in "Evaluation and Planning".
The sad part is that MOTO still makes the best phones. HTC never did it for me and I never liked Samsung. At the moment, the RAZR MAXX is the way to go. But even they aren't sure when to expect ICS. So for now, we wait for ICS and hope that some developers come back.

Lol well I bought the DROID X2 shortly after it came out, only to have the Bionic drop a few months later. After going through 5 replacements I bought the Bionic on CL since VZW wouldn't give me an early upgrade, only offered me a Dinc2 which I declined.
I probably won't buy another Moto product on VZW again unless they get their stuff straight.

Not really much left to say unless you want to complain [again] about the locked bootloader, lack of stable ICS and disappearance of devs. I've done all the groaning I can on this phone. After buying two, I'll get anything but Moto when it's time for an upgrade. They just don't appreciate customers.

As a follow up to how much I love to hate on MOTO and VZW for a lot of what they have done, I still would not switch from either company. Before the Bionic, I had a Droid X for a year and loved every minute of it. I never had any issues (I wasn't rooting and messing around at that point). The reason I got into the rooting/ROM side of things was because the Bionic had so much bloatware and such terrible battery life that I hoped most could be fixed with a new ROM. On both fronts, yes, Liberty did miracles. But even with the extended battery, my expectations of the phone's performance have not been entirely met. In some light messing around with a friend's RAZR MAXX during the last couple of months, I have found that it is more similar to the X than the Bionic; lighter on the bloatware and heavier on the performance. MOTO also has all the accessories that HTC and Samsung don't. With both the X and the Bionic, the navigation is stellar. I use the windshield mount almost everyday which correct me if I'm wrong, is not offered by the other companies. I have also heard that Samsung's, and seen that HTC's phones do not have a reliable GPS. Finally, with Google's acquisition of MOTO Mobility nearing completion, I would hope that the developers at Google will work to streamline BLUR in the near future.
I totally agree with you CR

I received the update to participate in the soak test yesterday. They have not pushed the test out yet as of 11:30 am CST..
This is all fine and dandy to wish for but realize this Droid Bionic, Love It! is soon to leave Verizon phone lineup due to its shortness of inventory and all the wonderful fascinating new devices that are out or coming...Do you really think the Evil Empire will actually give a new O/S to what they call an outdated device! Its just not good financial business to them! And how many times before have they "changed their minds" due to their financial gains, oh, but only to better our customer experience!
