PicSpeed Wallpapers Giving Better Crops - Nexus S Themes and Apps

The application I want to talk about is PicSpeed Wallpapers.
A promising application which offers pretty good wallpapers, in my opinion. However it is more than a simple wallpaper application... Not special in a sense where it gives you super exam cheating skills (which I so desperately need right now)... but it gives you MUCH better cropping for your wallpapers in the Gallery app .
So how do you use it and how much better is it? Well to use it start by getting a Wallpaper (one with irregular dimensions. The NS handles 480 x 800, so you use an iPhone Wallpaper that is 320 x 480 for examples sake). So once you got that on your phone go ahead and open up the Gallery. Find and tap on the image. Now hit the menu button and select "Set picture as" (on ICS) or whatever you need to click to set a wallpaper. You will notice a pop-up comes up. The normal options would be contact photo and wallpaper (and maybe whatever else you have), but now we are introduced with the option of "Set as Wallpaper" - with the PicSpeed icon beside it. So tap it (of coarse). Underneath the image will be three images. The first (left) crops the image to use just the middle (based on dimensions) and is not a scrollable Wallpaper. The second (middle) gives you the traditional full-use of the wallpaper in a scrollable state. The one that is most interesting is the last (right) option. This one offers a custom crop. Which means you can make the wallpaper scrollable or not and perfectly set the crop to whatever you want. So once you use the right custom option go ahead and hit the set option underneath it to the far right.
I think that is amazing finally a way to break the terrible cropping options the Gallery gave us. At first when PicSpeed released an earlier version the wallpaper would auto resize and mess up the image. They have updated the app since then and I no longer have to re-set the wallpaper on boot. Another bug I noticed is I cannot set a Wallpaper 'properly' with the traditional set wallpaper function my phone offers me, after I use PicSpeed to set a "custom" crop. This is easily fixable. Go into Gallery and the set the wallpaper with PicSpeed (again) with the Wallpaper with the traditional (middle) option. Or you can just reboot your phone, either way works.
Well yeah I just wanted to share this new amazing application with you all . You're welcome all! No more terrible cropping options YAAAAY!

Works great and have some nice wallpapers and see what you mean about cropping the images, kewl feature.

Wow. I have been dealing with crappy crops a long time, until now! Thanks for helping me figure out the way to use Picspeed and have the image as I intended! :good:

Glad it helped you

sorry to bumb a 5-month old thread, but since it IS wallpaper-related, how would i come across a single paged wallpaper if the original dimensions were 720x1280 and i want it to fit the screen fully? before using Nova's wp picker setting, i've already tried setting it to a dimension of 480x800 and hoping it'd fit the screen fully and there was a small black bar near the bottom
i'm attempting to mimic this look

[LAYOUT] Scrolling Wallpaper 'Dock' + Tutorial

ClassicalGas Presents..
Scrolling Wallpaper Dock
This is a repost from here as it is not HTC Desire specific. Everything should work on any phone with 800*480 resolution.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Concept
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been experimenting with what I believe to be a unique use for the scrolling wallpaper. If using LP with 6 homescreens your wallpaper scrolls exactly one dock icon (1/5th of the screen).
I started playing around with using this as a screen indicator and dock icons to jump between homescreens using LPP Shortcuts. Shortcuts to all 6 screens are attached. I found you could effectively use the scrolling effect of the wallpaper in place of a screen indicator (although it goes the wrong way).
It takes a bit of playing around with the wallpaper to get it 100%. I've included a .PSD of one of my files, however the others aren't really in an up-loadable state. I've included all the scrollable wallpapers I've made as well.
I hope you get some fun out of this - If you do make something interesting and unique please post here to share it with everyone else!

You need 6 to get it to scroll evenly. The way the wallpaper scrolls means that screen 1 and the last screen are at the far ends of the wallpaper and then each scroll is an equal division of the wallpaper. With 5 evenly spaced icons you need 6 screens. If the icons were evenly spread out and there were only 3 then it could work with 4 home-screens.
Alternately you could use 2 home-screens and have half a wallpaper on the other side.I was thinking of doing a heaven and hell theme with screen 1 light and white and screen 2 red and black. But haven't had time.
Hi, I really like your theme but I have no clue how to make the .lps files the shortcut.
EDIT: nvm, i found it. Had to place in sd card under folder called "downloads" then pick launcher pro shortcuts. Thanks for the theme

May I have but one request? I don't play a lot of games on my phone, but I use multiple social networking apps, is it possible to change the "games" tab to say "social"? And if there is a way that the user could do it, I'm all ears.
Love this idea and will be applying it to my set up when I figure out my request =P
EDIT: sorry, didn't open all the files, going to mess with some icon packs
Been playing around with this today, I couldn't figure out what it meant in the tutorial about the screen_6.lps? I'm assuming that if you apply that shortcut and hit it another screen it takes you too that screen, I just don't know how to apply it. Is that only in Launcher Pro paid version?
Have you had any luck on that Polaroid picture wallpaper, that's the best one out of all of them.
im about to make my own based off your black one ill post it when im done

it works pretty well on my vibrant

cant you upload the /sdcard/launcherpro_backup for us so we can just upload it and do what we like to tweak? It'd be a hell of a lot easier...
The game icons, angry birds, etc etc, can i get the pack? you editing them yourself? I checked the credits for the icons of eclipse, wasn't them.
do you have a link for those icons?

Avoid Launcher Pro if you want your backgrounds to work normal

I have another thread on here but this is a heads up, Launcher Pro will screw up the cropping size/placment of the background images you want on your nook. I had to finally do a factory reset to get it back.
So if you want your nook back ground to be normal, don't use launcher pro, its not that important.

How So?
What does it do to the background?
I mean Android is pretty terrible about scaling background pictures to begin with.
Doesn't matter bro. Having original launcher replaced by Launcher Pro is worth giving up just a nice looking wallpaper.
You don't need to avoid Launcher Pro! Everything looks good if you set the wallpaper when the device is in landscape mode.
Use Zeam instead of Launcher Pro.
Trust me.

Hi,

Thanks.

Zeam has the same problem for me. Try setting the wallpaper to one of the stock ones included in the nook. It'll ask you to crop it (probably to the standard 800x480 android size) which ended up zooming to fill the screen.
Going back to the stock Home launcher, the zoomed/cropped wallpaper stays that way. Changing the wallpaper there doesn't crop it, but it also doesn't fit it to the 3 panels, so only your middle panel looks correct while the left and right panels have half the image and the other half is black.
Tried setting the wallpaper in landscape (with any of the launchers) and it didn't make a difference
Same problem as LauncherPro. Only way I could fix it is with a factory reset.

And for the guy above you asking for the wallpaper... http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/D6a22dbd/02435_kindofindiansummer_1600x1200.jpg

For those with Zeam. Try this. Go here. Click on the picture of the winter scene for full size and long press the picture. Now select SET AS WALLPAPER and see if it works. It stretches for 3 screens for me.
Does the nook seem more responsive with launcher pro? (smoother transitions etc)

Confirmed. I'm guessing that using Launcher Pro even once is the cause of the problem. I used it and then started using Zeam and it was still happening, but as long as I set it while in landscape, the background looks ok. Thanks for the tip, vmx128!
How did you get those apps to show up on the bottom sliding strip ?? Mine all show up on the "Extras" screen ....

Here's a few images to illustrate using one of the stock wallpapers included with the nookcolor. I added numbers to the panels (in photoshop) for clarity:
stock home BEFORE root
Zeam after rooting - no change of wallpaper
Going back to stock NC home after using Zeam - no change in wallpaper
Resetting the same wallpaper in stock NC home after Zeam was installed
I used this stock wallpaper because you can see the the difference in the texture of the ground and the basketball. All wallpapers I've tried to set have the same effect.
It's not an issue with LauncherPro because I haven't yet installed it after this factory reset and if there was some residual effect left over it wouldn't be back to being crisp without blackbars as in the first set of screenshots.
It seems to me that LauncherPro and Zeam expect a 960x800 wallpaper size (standard android wallpaper size). That's why when I use one of the stock NC images that are larger than that it takes me to the cropping screen. Problem is that in order to fit the 1024px screen, it now has to zoom the (now 800px high after cropping) image to fit the higher resolution screen.
However, I still don't understand why it messes up the stock NC from displaying its own wallpapers properly after returning to it from Zeam. It seems to be scrolling the image too far when moving to the left and right panels which results in the black bars.

Hey antoniouslj (or anyone else) do you have a valid link to the zeam 2.6.0 apk? I have 2.5.2, but the lack of customizable number of columns and rows makes zeam pretty lame for the NC.
I installed the wallpapercasa app which has a ton of high resolution pics. It does an excellent job in sizing wallpaper to fit whatever device is being used. I'm using LauncherPro btw.

Custom Background Image

I'm trying to set a custom image for the background.
1) After cropping the image I want to use, it seems to zoom in to 50% (quality isn't so good either)
2) Seems like the horizontal range when cropping the image is really limited. There's no way to let the background scroll more in order for me to choose a wider image?
1. Dont use launcher/gallery to set the wallpaper.
2. For better quality use .png-images.
3. Copy your wallpaper to B&N folder.
4. Use the softbar: settings -> home(?) (not sure, because i don't have the stock software)
5. Sorry for my bad english.

Thanks, I tried this and with PNG and I'm still getting the same thing. Seems like the crop window isn't working like it should and I'm getting about half of what I select.
Edit: I've tried 3 different launchers, different sized images, cropping before applying, nothing seems to be working. If I'm the only one with this problem, maybe I have something set up wrong?
Hm...the stock wallpaper app should work.
You can try the market-app "wallpaper set and save". This works for me (on froyo).

This is with "Wallpaper Set and Save"; doesn't ask to crop but at least it puts in the entire height of the image:
The resulting resolution from both methods are horrible though. Left is the home screen set with "Wallpaper Set and Save" and right is the image seen through the Gallery
I've tried multiple resolutions, JPG, PNG, native screen height, nothing seems to work.
I noticed this issue as well, it doesn't seem to affect the stock wallpaper images on the nook color.
The fix for this is easy actually.
Copy the background you want into the wallpaper folder under MyNookColor >> My Files >> Wallpaper. Put the wallpaper there.
Launch the stock GUI.
Long press on the background and pick the wallpaper from the wallpaper gallery not the picture gallery.
1800x1024 is ideal, but I use 1680x1050 and it looks just fine to me.

That worked, thanks a lot. Is this an issue for everyone with the stock rom or is it more specific (autonooter 3.0 or v1.1, etc)? Cause it's annoying enough that I might reroot with a different version before I put too much time into customizing my Nook.

Sure no problem that Widget is called Animated Weather Widget Clock and can be found here on the android market:
https://market.android.com/details?...2JpbGl0eWZsb3cuYW5pbWF0ZWR3ZWF0aGVyLmZyZWUiXQ..
As for the skin I am on ICS 4.0.3 and that is the default skin for ICS
Thanks for these they are nice.
How do you tuen on wallpaper scrolling though?
I am using ICS on my HD2, and whenever I try to set a wallpaper it makes me crop it and displays somehting completely different to what I set on the crop.
So what Resolution would it need to be just to have a fixed wallpaper? Without it making you crop it...
And how to turn on scrolling so it moves across it when you scroll, rather than being a fixed static one?
Cheers.

For the HD2 its 480x800. To my knowledge, find the image you want on the web and hold the image by pressing it and you should have an option to set it as a wallpaper, it should auto set without you having to crop anything.
To turn on wallpaper scrolling to the following: Setting->Launcher-Homescreen->Select Scroll Wallpaper option.
Great Work!
I noticed this thread a few days ago and you had some wallpapers that I really wanted to get and they are gone now. Is there anyway I can get those wallpapers still?
Thanks for sharing. I love the 3rd and the 4th one
Could you please share some more wallpapers of such quality.

Is this on Ice Cream Sandwich? there is no (Launcher-Homescreen)? I really can not work out where to turn scrolling on.
EDIT - I have found the scroll wallpaper options, in Trebuchet Settings, Homescreen, Scroll Wallpaper. It is ticked, yet the wallpapers still do not scroll as I scroll across the screem?

I'm Sorry, I deleted them by mistake and did not have them backed up, the only one I could find was this one:
If I happen to find the rest I will put them back up.

I am using the same ROM as you are and I'm having no problems here. Try doing a clean install and see if that fixes everything but don't forget to make a backup.
Is it possible to put this in a zip that way i can put all of these on my phone every time you upload them?

Background image size?

Anyone know the correct pixel dimensions of an image i want to use for my home screen(s) wallpaper?
I've been messing about and all the images get resized horribly. I think it has to allow for the scrolling between screens in port and landscape modes, looking at the the dialogue that comes up when you select an image...
On a image of 720x1280 px
It would be 72 dpi
Bit depth 24
Hope this helps
I cant get that to work. I uploaded 720x1280 to the phone and tried to set it as a wallpaper from the gallery. It them forces to drag a mask to select part of that image (screenshot attached). I can't select the whole image (as the mask stays the same shape and can only be scaled). What am I doing wrong?

You can also use something like
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
Which will take multiple sized images and make them fit nicely. The interface is a bit wierd, but it is free and works well once you figure it out.
Three different sized images using the app...

Landscape of one of the same images:
I'm new to Android and I had the same difficulty.
One way to get around the resizing issue is to find an excessively large image and then set it as wallpaper. That will take you to a screen with a selection box that allows you to choose which part of the image to use. This way will not resize the image and takes very little effort, although it works best with very minimal, textured looking backgrounds where you don't need to frame anything in particular.
If you want to crop or scale the image yourself, I believe that the proper wallpaper dimensions for an N7's 800 x 1280 screen would be 1200 x 1280. That's because android wants an additional 50% of horizontal space for scrolling, or so I've read.
I didn't try it because I was experimenting with several different wallpapers and the selection box was a faster way to cycle between them than cropping them all in advance. When I settled on one that I liked I didn't care about trimming the file.
I am not new to Android and I STILL can't figure out the stupid wallpaper forcing me to resize and crop, even when it's the perfect ratio & size! Why can't it just bloody well fit? Very frustrating

It's any and all pictures TBH! I just can't get to grips with how Android wallpapering is supposed to work. I have one image that's 1280x800 that I want to use as a static image across all tiles - it's wants me to re-crop it with that awful crop tool. When I want to put a much bigger image across all tiles and have it scroll, it just doesn't do what I feel should be instinctive and doesn't offer the kind of options that i'd expect.

Firstly, you would need to rotate a 1280x800 image for it to be tall enough for portrait mode. And even if there is a tool to do that in the selection screen, 800 pixels isn't going to be wide enough. You're trying to use an undersized image and it's forcing you to enlarge it.
It's undersized because of horizontal scrolling, which means you'll need an image wider than the resolution of the screen. I read 50% wider, which is why I've told you 1200x1280. And I really hope that's right, because this is the third time I've said it now and I never tested it.
I've attached a 1200x1280 image for you to test. It's the wallpaper I was using, cropped.

I too, hate that problem. It seems so simple to just put a background image in but they need it to be able to do landscape too and blah blah blah. I had to use a 1920x1200 image for my wallpaper. I use apex launcher and have my Wallpaper Mode set to 'Single Screen'. On my phone I used an app called QuickPic to make the wallpaper scale but it didn't work the way i wanted on my N7. Hope that helps
The native res for wallpapers appears to be 1440x1280.
