I'm close to throwing my N1 out the window (touch/haptic problem) - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good morning all,
I've had my Nexus 1 since the day it was released in the states. I've been running CM7 for a while now and i'm not sure if it's causing my problem, which is:
Quite often the touch function and haptic feedback goes nuts and I can't do anything, including answering a call or switching off the loudspeaker which often incorrectly gets switched on when I answer a call. Any touch of the screen just sends the haptic feedback off and either presses go on the wrong thing or nothing at all.
To fix this state, I lock the screen and unlock it. It doesn't appear to be related to any gunk on the screen but a software issue. Every time a simple lock/unlock function fixes the issue.
For reference i'm running: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-N1 - IIRC the issue existed with an earlier nightly build too. I've not tried anything later yet.
I really hope this is a known issue with a fix complete or in progress as I am close to getting rid.
Here's hoping!

Oh good morning, kind sir, long sleep you had. Nexus One and this problem have only been out for 2 years now, I guess it's very very hard to find any references to it. Let's try: read the FAQ, question 5, link in my signature.

Did you mean question 5? If so i'd love to know how this is a hardware issue as a simple lock/unlock resolves. I don't believe that action changes the hardware, although I suppose it could sent a re-init to the touch controller or something.

You suppose right.
In any case, it might be a combined SW/HW issue. It is well documented around the internet, and I believe some searching will get you all the info you want. As I implied, you don't think you're the first in 2 years to ask about this problem, do you?

No, probably not. You don't think you're the first to be sarcastic on the internet, do you?

No, I'm definitely not the first. I just like it from time to time
In any case, if you're technically inclined, your best bet would be trying to adapt HTC Desire digitizer - which is the fixed model of Nexus One's digitizer - and see if it solves the issues. I would rather change the phone

I thought the Desire had the same hardware except for the buttons (and possibly radio).

They're similar, but not identical. Except of the obvious differences from Nexus One (buttons, trackball/pad, etc), Desire also has some less obvious differences. For example, its digitizer is SYNT0101, different from Nexus One's faulty SYNT0102.

I am just curious why you recommend to get a new phone. Because the cost to fix it? Or it isn't worth and hard to replace the digitizer? BTW, I read the nexusone FAQ

After two years of daily Touchscreen wonks, i've gone the last two weeks without any at all. That was when i switched to MIUI, and the issue has disappeared completely. It's a bleeding miracle!

Because I'm not sure how feasible it is to replace the digitizer. Nobody has ever done it, and I don't know if these models are compatible at all. And this digitizer problem is highly annoying. Each time the phone heats up - like when navigating - the screen will act crazy.

I want to emphasize this as well.
Coming from the Atrix (no screen issues) the first thing I did was flash MIUI on my N1.
That said, as I've not experienced the touchscreen problem the has long been documented, I'm sure I'd have noticed it immediately.
I've been using my N1 with MIUI (latest non-ICS build) for a few weeks now, with and without a screen protector, mostly with a case (which might add to any problematic heat build-up), and have not experienced this touchscreen issue a single time.
I don't know if MIUI is different in some way, but it might be interesting to see if it either completely fixes, or at least mitigates, the problem you're having.

do you think 2.2 will fix the multi touch? or there is anyway to actually fix it

I mean im not expecting miracles but do you think froyo will be able to address the multitouch problem we are having? I know the problem its hardware related but maybe it could be addressed through software I mean i would give up a couple of milliseconds of response time for the multitouch to work correctly if they could correct thru software,i wish there could be any real way to address this issue.
do you people think they can and will address this issue in the next update what are the chances of this even being possible,i would like to be able to play a game without worrying if it would even work if the games"keypad" is in the same axis with the games soft buttons, I love the phone but sometimes I cant live with some of its flaws, the edge to 3g switching problem is definitely not a carrier problem as I didn't have it on my mytouch 3g the truly dodgy speaker on the phone not the actual speakerphone but when youre making calls the phone speaker is way too weak if im not in my room by myself its relly hard for me to hear what people are saying to me other than that the phone is incredible, btw I typed this whole topic using swype which I just started using last night, its really awesome. but yeah brick of text just lemme know what you think about froyo being able to address the multitouch problem. cheers swype is awesome ha ha, its even fun to use

HW-wise, you won't get any more than 2 touches acquired on the screen.
SW might have a workaround for the axis bug. Let's wait and see.
I believe nobody needs more than two touches,i really don't want to return the phone or sell it because as of now I could probably sell the phone for like 400$ and pay my etf and get an evo or an incredible ive had the nexus one for like two weeks now and I haven't missed the phone being rooted I already bought a case for the nexus one too, sometimes I feel like im trying to like this phone too much when I should just do what's smart for me and maybe get another phone I love android i guess I'll wait froyo to see if it helps out man

There will definitely be a software workaround for the bug. It's just a matter of time. Either that, or we need a daring coder to venture into this area.
HW-wise, like mentioned, probably not gonna get more than two touches.
But who the heck needs to touch the screen with so many grubby fingers anyways? =P

Phantom screen input

Hi everyone,
Long time lurker so first off thanks to everyone for all the useful assistance over quite a prolonged period.
I did a search before posting this, and whilst other screen issues have been raised in the past I could see no reference to this one. Basically in the last 48hrs my N7 has started to interpret touch screen input despite me not actually interfacing with the screen. It has got so bad in the last day I'm probably going to have to send it back as I assume its a hardware issue. I've had the N7 about 6 weeks.
Not sure if anyone else has seen such a thing and its actually software related? I'd rather fix it myself if possible rather than send it away. Even if not, I thought it would be useful to provide a record of the issue.
Edit - as a new user I can't post the YouTube link. My username is stenard1000 and the video title is "Nexus 7 screen issue - phantom input". I double checked and its easy enough to locate.
Ignore the Paradise Cove gameplay in the background. The issue mainly occurs in the top right corner. The only screen input by me in the video is the back button or pressing no in the middle of the screen. I've enabled the touch screen logging in the developer options to help track the phantom inputs more easily.
Also, for the record, turning the screen off and back on again does stop the issue temporarily, so its not a permanent hardware fault.
All you can do is a full wipe and format of everything, and flash back to completely stock. If that doesn't fix it then its a hardware issue and you're powerless,; time to send it back.
One thing that you could try first is popping the back off, and disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or so to give it a proper cold boot. That's the best advice i can give...

I've recently started getting this as well, my n7 was picked up last August so its odd that its suddenly started to be haunted.

There's been a # of posts & discussions on this lately - hardware issues are being pointed at - as simple as a loosely assembled battery connector (that's lousy QC on the production line at the factory = poor QI) and/or hardware failure with the thin & delicate electronics.
At least we can mostly conclude that neither our own government's CIA/NSA and/or UK's MI5, etc. are tuning in to spy on our devices, or some hackers deep out in cyberspace has managed to remotely launch spyware on the N7 - I would hate to think what my friends behind the China's firewalled garden are handling these freaking incidents with the ghosty keypad inputting strokes on its own, LOL.
I had this issue straight out the box and after i flashed smoothrom also (i called them ghost strokes). After flashing CleanRom all that disappeared. Can't say for sure that CleanROM fixed it, buti haven't had that issue since then.

I just flashed SmoothROM last night and had this problem as well. I didn't happen with the stock ROM though. I just bought mine two weeks ago.
Does anyone know if it's software or hardware yet? D=

Screen Died (and I'm unlocked) - Suggestions?

I'm on Cromi-X and last night the screen just died. No warning or other issues were noted. My wife was in the middle of a game of PVZ2 and it stopped working, She assumed that the battery had just hit 0%. I have been on Cromi-X for about 5 weeks and had zero problems - the tablet was running just fine. It's still running fine, with an HDMI cable and dock, the tablet is perfectly useable. So now for suggestions.
1) Is there any point in going through the effort of returning the tablet to stock and sending it back to Asus (hoping that they will honor the warranty)? Obviously unlocking and rooting aren't going to cause a hardware failure like this, but their language is pretty clear that unlocking voids the warranty regardless of whether or not this has anything to do with the failure.
2) In a sad coincidence, my second TF701T was damaged yesterday in a car accident (yes, I actually lost two tablets the same day). In this case, the problem seems to be just the digitizer as the display looks perfect below the cracked glass, but I know that replacements for qty=1 aren't really an option. That one wasn't unlocked by the way (too bad they weren't reversed). This one may get covered by insurance since the other driver ran a red light and smashed into the car. However, I might end up with a functional LCD available to use on the other one (I'm guessing that the digitizer is probably fine). I realize that this is a tricky repair.
3) Are there any known problems anyone has heard of about screens going dead like this? Is there a connector that could have worked its way loose or anything like that?
What do you folks think I should try? If #1 is a 0% chance of getting Asus to fix under warranty, then I'd rather not waste the time and money on round-trip freight. On the other hand, if there is a chance, I'd be screwing myself by opening the tablet to look for something loose or fixable on the connection to the screen which definitely would void the warranty.
Thanks in advance.

I have something I have just discovered 2 days ago.... When I was playing real racing 3, my tablet turned off as the battery got discharged. I connected the charger and turned the tablet on, then all I could see was gliches on the screen. The colors were hazy. And the touchscreen was not usable. I think it is a hardware issue because it did not affect only android but also the asus logo that appears before loading the os. I tried to reboot several times in vain. Fortunatlely, I found out how to get rid of those glistches. Very simple: when the os boots, I lock the screen then unlocked it. Yeah very weird!!! the problem was reproduced as well as the solution... However, I dont know if it happens only when the tablet goes off while gaming or does it happen every time the tablet gets discharged. Other than that, everything works flawlessly!!!
You unlocked it which means no you no longer have a warranty. ASUS are quite clear on this. You can send it back to Asus and they will charge you to fix it.
Or you could open the back and check the ribbon hasn't come lose? Same with the other one, get a screen from eBay and fix it yourself. Probably some vids you can use on you tube.

So, I opened the tablet. Angry Dinosaur was right, it really is easy. Unfortunately, the cables connecting the display to the board look fine. I haven't seen any spare TF701T screens on Ebay, but I will keep looking. If anyone knows of a place, please let me know. Thanks.

I'm bored A week speaking Japanese and nothing but Japanese TV and crappy BG WiFi modem I need some normality. That's you guys with your broken gadgets.
I normally don't do this, but based on what just happened, I added the Amazon 2-yr drops, spills, and hardware failure protection for $45. This one DOESN'T say anything about unlocking voiding a warranty (an that might be hard to prove in the event of a drop anyway). Anyone have any experience with this? For $45 it seems like a decent alternative to the loss of Asus warranty when I root. I can't not do it either, since I noticed such a big improvement on Cromi-X.
SBDAGS, if you are bored for a minute I had another question for you. I know that you love the stock browser and I agree that it's faster than Chrome. I want the extra screen space and so am using the quick controls. The one problem for me is that I like to scroll with my left thumb and pull out the menu with my right. I end up accidentally pulling up the quick controls and jumping to another page when I'm trying to scroll. This happens about every 5th scroll attempt. Do you have any idea how hard it would be to modify the labs setting to allow quick controls to function off left, right, both - maybe check boxes? I searched but couldn't find anything already done. I could create another donation fund for you if you think it's not a huge amount of work.

Delay in opening Air Command menu

Hi All,
So I got my Note 5 a couple of days everything works fine except for the annoying delay in opening of Air command menu once the Spen is pulled out.
The issue doesn't always happen and I noticed that its slow to open up only when the device has been on sleep mode for a while. There is no perceptible delay when I have been using the device and take out the Spen.
Was wondering if that's how it is or is there something up with my device.
Any pointers would be of great help.
Thanks.
I just got my note 5 and I have the same exact issue. There is a long delay after I pull the pen out and then once it finally comes on, the delay is gone. But when the pen is not used for a while and I try to use it again the delay is back.

Thanks Gso78 for the confirmation.
Mine is an Indian version N920G ,Since the issue is not widespread wondering if it has got to do with the variant.
Did you find any solution to it.Anybody else facing the same issue?
Regards.
I have the same issue since the time I bought it.
I also experience this. I don't use the pen much, but find it interesting that, like the OP, the issue happens only after the pen is left in for an amount of time. Then subsequent times in near time to the first, there is no/little delay. Suggests it's a software issue and in that case I'd expect most folks to experience this, barring some hardware revision or variances by carrier version.
Mine is a Verizon U.S. model for the record.
Curious if anyone has found the source of this issue, or how wide spread it is (seems not very wide spread considering how few people responded to this thread).
Just wanted to add my name to this list, I have the Indian N920G running Dr.Ketan ROM L8
Yes. I too have same problem. Indian version

No. I tried many times even after getting two updates. I have given to service center and calling them daily two times. One week over. They admit that the manufacturer didnt install a part. I think they called it "black tape" if i heard it correctly. MADE IN INDIA.

Motherboard fault they said. Replaced my piece with a Brand New One!
I have no delay, it comes up right when the pen is completely out of the phone. N920P here
They Repaired my phone (not replaced) but they broke back cover. So another 3 days of delay and frustration. And finally got my phone back working fine. Hope not to go service center anytime in future and i to switch to apple.

Touch screen periodically starts dropping inputs

Hey everyone. I just got the Blu r1 HD on the mail and I love this phone. Everything I've thrown at it works flawlessly and I've had no trouble except for this one problem.
There are periods of time where the touch screen will drop input for a half a second to 3 seconds at a time. Usually it works fine but sometimes I'll try to type and I keep missing on the keyboard because the touch screen drops inputs. It's not just the keyboard it's anywhere else too
Most of the timeit works well but when this starts happening it's aggravating to use. Anyone know what causes it?
I'm gonna have to return the phone regardless but I really would like to know if there's a possible fix or if this problem is inherent to all models. I really hope not because I really like this phone.
Thanks all so much

I have noticed this too. Kernel source was just released. I'm going to go ahead and blow wind but I feel there is a multi-touch delay. Kernel source being released should fix this.
I just feel how this thing sips power that it was tuned that way. Annoying? Yes. Correctable? More than likely. I'd say hold your ponies before you send that back and buy one thats been fixed to not be bootloader unlocked.
Cheers!

Thanks for your response. Do you get consistently sluggish or is it responsive with random bouts of dropped inputs? Because it's the latter for me.
I almost think it's something do with the digitizer controller or firmware but I'm not sure.
I also occasionally notice ghost swipes when this happens.
Feels like the oneplus one all over again hopefully the kernel source being available helps us find a solution. I'll take a look myself but wouldn't know the first place to start to debug the touch screen
Thank you!
