- Great speed
- ICS coming
- Great camera
- Did I mention the lovely screen?
Cons:
- Notification LED missing (I got used to it on Desire)
- For some the screen might just be too big, so try it out before you buy it.
- You really won't like smaller screens after a few days
Oh and the phone has some difficulties with the black color in films. As I read, it is because the screen has 24-bit color depth, which is uncommon yet amongst programs (to an expert: please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Hello Darius, I've owned both the SGS1 & 2, and now the Note. I had some misgivings about the Note too, especially since the demo units at the local Samsung shops felt laggy to me. But I did much research and finally got the phone, and it's one of the best decisions I ever made.
Pros:
Huge size makes browsing, checking email and ebook reading a breeze. It's large enough for me to decide to sell off my rooted NookColor as this is much more flexible, portable and has much better features. I find it easier to hold the phone and take photos because of the size, as compared to the SGS2 which was too thin for me to hold comfortably.
Doesn't matter what conflicting information there are out there about pentile display, the screen is beautiful and the colours lovely, not over-saturated like SGS2. Banding is also much better than what the SGS2 suffered from.
Battery life and camera seem comparable to SGS2, if not better. No issues with dead pixels, pink spots, green whatever...I did notice that the display is a tad uneven with a flat grey wallpaper/background, but that was true of my SGS2 as well. In real life I do not use an even toned grey wallpaper, so that doesn't bother me at all. And it's pointless to get all stressed out over little things like that as my life is exciting enough.
The s-pen makes taking notes on the fly so much easier and cooler than digging around for a pen to write on your palm! I like being able to take screen captures too. Hopefully my artistic career will take off because of this phone. Nah...just kidding!
Cons:
Huge size means the self-conscious people may feel somewhat clownish with this. You'll have to put up with a few--not that many--stares, rubber necks and looks of horror from the unenlightened. Those who had owned Palms or are suffering from long sightedness will doubtless praise you for your gorgeous new gadget. Those who wear tight jeans may not be so crazy about it.
It comes with bloatware that slow down the phone (at least for speed freaks like me) and take up space. Thus you may need to root--please read extensively before doing so--in order to freeze or delete the bloatware. This is subjective as some people don't find the bloatware an issue, but I've always rooted my phones and my hands get itchy when I don't. Perhaps once the official ICS comes out, I will no longer need to root as I understand that you can easily delete unwanted apps.
Some apps are not meant for phones this size and may not take up the entire screen, or will look a little soft. So far these tend to be games. It's not a deal breaker for me because I don't play many games and can easily look for alternative games.
And the greatest problem, I feel, is that I may never settle for a smaller phone in the future!

I heard there are some screen quality issues with the Note from this forum but didn't think I would be unlucky enough to get one. But guess what....
But hey...I'm sure you will be luckier than me....and apart from that....it's a GREAT device
Well the only issues you would face are with the screen and nothing else. If you are buying at some store do sure to take "dead pixel checker" or "screen test" software with you (in ur older phone). You can transfer em to the new phone via bluetooth and test the screen.
Otherwise U can go to the service menu and check the RGB screens for any dead pixel. Best way to check for dead pixel is to lower the brightness to 0% and take the phone in a dark environment if possible and look from a distance of about 5 inches. Otherwise its really hard to make out dead pixels in bright lights, but if they are there and you are watching a movie at night in the bed, u wont be too happy to find em. As others have said the screen is uneven on gray color. Do check out the grey color and see if there are any smudges and try to see them on other normal screens. If they are not there then all good.
Regarding dead pixels till now, only white stuck pixels have been reported (me a victim as well). And stuck pixels (particularly in this phone) are visible only on grey color. If you have any more doubts dont hesitate to ask, would be glad to help !!!
I have had both. The biggest decision is the screen. Its fantastic to look at and work on but its massive to deal with. I'm sometimes a little scared I may drop the device and one handed is nearly impossible - which is generally not a big deal except for taking pictures sometimes. Jury is still out.

This phone is perfect for me except this issue with the blacks / greys. Even when i zoom in on dark parts of pictures taken with the phones camera it turns into a pixelated mess, so this is defiantly not a low quality source issue, its hardware or software related, but which?

I really am at a loss to what you guys are complaining about. I'm either not that fussy, or deluded to the fact that what I think I am seeing as 'bad' I pass off as something else.
From what I've read around the forums, what should be a shaded series of greys/blacks in an area are appearing as blocks of black/darkgrey instead of a gradual change.
I've always thought this was down to how videos/images where compressed or decompressed and displayed - which would almost certainly be software and not hardware?

Same here. My blacks look fine most of the time. When I do get grey blockiness I'm pretty sure it's due to poor compression in the video file, because other videos, large black areas look fine.
Can anyone give a link to a video available online in which this problem occurs (and the point in the video we should be looking at).
Maybe then we can get some objective testing with everyone using the same source file.
Maybe even have people doing screenshots to compare screens.

I'm rarely using my phone in dark enough conditions to notice.
ICS should improve gradients, but won't fix the black crush if it is indeed a problem with the screen hardware.
I am probably going to regret this, as my Note was perfect except for this black crush issue, but I sent mine back to be replaced. And the issue was not just on videos for me so poor quality encodes are not the problem, I was getting it even with pictures taken with the phones camera. Said pictures taken with the Note displayed fine on my pc and my wifes Galaxy s 2, so it is deffo a problem with the device.
Please lets not turn this into another "who cares" or "its not that noticeable" debate like the other threads, all I am aiming at with this thread from now is to find out if there are any Notes in existence that do not have this issue!

There is no phone or portable device in existence that is color accurate, either tonally or temperature or gamma correct out of the box, and to expect such is to be, well, expecting quite a bit too much.
Why do i make that statement?.. Well, given that a monitor or TV at ANY price are not accurately calibrated.
To get an accurately calibrated monitor requires a display worth using, then a color tone/temperature/gamma calibration system (which is ~$200 & up) and software that can use the resulting calibration profiles...
The SGN is a phone... tbh there is no "fault" or "problem" here, other than unrealistic customer expectations...
Would a settings app that could set globally set color temp & gamma be helpful? sure.. there is enough color temp variation in the spread of production tolerances in phone to make this useful... stop a ll the pink white /blue white issues
But will it make the SGN a color accurate display?.. no.
So... lets wave a magic wand and make it so... whats the point? the camera does not justify it, the movies you watch are overly compressed and not color accurate (never mind compression artifacts of banding, blocking and shading), youtube videos have no quality controls.. online TV, website videos and stills have major color saturation issues.. so what content will you access that is going to be useable on a color accurate display?..

Dude, my pc plays / displays these movies and images fine with no artifacts, as does my tv, as does my partners Galaxy s 2, as does my Nexus s, so how can you say that there is no problem?
Anyway, I just had a look at my cousins Galaxy Note and that one is playing these movies fine, and is displaying the pictures taken with my Note without the chess board effect, so if you are happy to pay over £400 for a defective device thats up to you, but many of us expect to get what we paid for.

I agree with you it is a problem and even supercurio has been on it and he is a developer so someting isnt right so lets hope it gets fixed cause many people suffer with it

The problem is clear enough to see there, but it's not one I've ever noticed on my Note. I just tried playing this YouTube clip on my Note....

and could see nothing wrong with the video performance in a darkened (curtains drawn during daytime) room. I wonder how well this clip plays for other people on the Note.
I made a video of the Note playing this clip and I'm uploading it at the moment. It will take a while (81 minutes remaining at the moment) as I shot in 1080p. I'll post a link when it's ready.
FWIW I'm on the latest official ROM and my phone was sourced from Germany in early November. From my perspective there is no problem, which might make it quite hard for Samsung to fix.
My Note is running on ICS (CM9) and the color rendering is substantially improved over stock GB. Gradients are smoother and blacks are rendered cleaner.

I've played the same clip on my Note and it looks exactly like yours, no banding/crushing/clipping whatsoever.
I've tried a lot of Youtube clips and movie trailers but in only one of them I could see obvious artefacts during a fade out. I played the same clip on my pc and saw the same thing happen there so that's probably just lousy encoding.

I got me new note, this one is set to uk language instead of german like the one I returned. It has the exact same issue, drops from 4 grey to 3 complete black and i am still getting the clipping, bloody Samsung, this was meant to be an upgrade from my nexus s, but most stuff looks better on that! Not gonna excahnge again, I will wait for ICS and see if Samsung actually acknowledge the issue.
@Mystic38. Whilst I agree with you that most consumer devices don't come calibrated to industry standards and that most consumer devices lack the essential settings found on the most basic of professional displays, I fail to see how any colour, contrast, hue, gamma or brightness calibration would affect the overall appearance, unless of course you are cranking the settings beyond anything useful and crushing the dynamics intentionally.
It's difficult to introduce visual banding or blocking in high BIT rate video or lightly compressed images by tweaking settings and calibration by a couple of percent alone, as there are near on 17 million colours. This leaves thousands of grey levels to play with and the human eye shouldn't notice banding or blocking with that many greys.
This presumably points to an issue with the way that video is presented to the screen driver or how the screen driver drives the screen. There's probably an issue with crushing where the hardware converts the digital signal to electronic levels of each AMOLED element. I have seen this problem on other devices, not just phones and most of the time it was rectified after a software upgrade.
Another thing to remember is that companies like Samsung are fully aware and accommodating of the fact that a lot of people now use these types of phones as monitors for photography and video production as I do. I use DSLR Controller and have no problem with crushing. Using the phone as a monitor has been extremely helpful and negated the expense of something which would have cost over 10 times the price.

Everything below 4 is black and as you go through the numbers from 4 and above there are bands grouping four levels into one tone. Worse still, the tones alternate from greenish to purple instead of being shades of grey. Interestingly if I perform a screen capture the capture is a true reflection of what I see, which implies to me that the Note is actually sending bad values to the screen rather than a hardware problem, because surely the screen capture only cares about the data, not the physical appearance produced.
Looking at the same file on my laptop everything is presented correctly, so obviously the file is not the problem.
Yet despite failing this test I have never noticed a problem with the Note to cause me concern in normal every day use.

Have you viewed it in the gallery or in a browser? With my Note everything below 4 is crushed in the stock ICS browser but I can see everything in the gallery.

I think the gallery uses a different color gradient and temperature than the stock ICS browser, much as if you view a rich encoded black contrast video on the stock video player and on a custom app video player like MX player... you get varying results...
I think this issue is a mix of both a hardware and software one, and though the Official ICS upgrade "might" alleviate this problem, I surely believe also that since this is a combination of a hardware problem, the clippings are still there but perhaps not quite noticeable anymore....
Then let's get Google to fix it.
Star this issue. Right now, it only has 5 stars. Encourage everyone you know who has an Nexus 4 and is annoyed with the washed out and faded colors to star this issue. Maybe we can get better screen calibration in Key Lime Pie.

The amount of people moaning about this compared to the amount perfectly happy with their phones backs up the fact that this is complete tosh.
And by that I mean the hundreds in this forum, if it even is that many, compared to the thousands in the forum and the.millions out there completely happy with it including reviews.
I for one love the screen and in every real world test side by side.with other phones that I've carried out proved to me and others that the nexus 4 display is true to life as possible and most other displays are.over saturated and un natural.
Bright cartoonish colours and black crush does not mean a good screen.
If people want to have a mythical non washed out screen get a super amoled display already.
Google should completely ignore bug reports for none bugs such as this and.people shouldn't take up their time with this nonsense.
That's ten minutes i won't get back lol

The screen on my N4 is wonderfully neutral for a change, in real life colours don't burn your eyes out.
4.2.2 is better, not perfect, but quite nice. imo

That's the thing. It is not true to life. Well...it is if you're living a world filled with shades of grey After i installed one of Mole's custom kernels i can say that the difference is STAGGERING. Gamma values are between 2.2 and 2.4 (compared to 1.6-1.7 in stock kernel). RGB standards say that 2.2 is true to life...1.6 isn't

I find the screen to be completely acceptable, and great to use. Only 45 people starred it at the time of writing this post, out of thousands of users (if not more) on Nexus 4 forums. Everyone knows that screen is less saturated and more natural than AMOLED screens, and most people bought it knowing that. They had 15 days to return the device, and they chose to keep it. It's simply a different technology, with advantages and disadvantages. You can do all the calibration you want, it's not gonna look as saturated as AMOLED screens.

The screen is WAY off on gamma. It is improperly calibrated. We are not trying to get over saturated colors. Do you understand?

It's becoming like the 'avforums', where all the boffs with years of audio/visual experience and thousands of pounds of calibrating equipment, give there settings for the 'best' experience with your new £/$1000.00+- set. All discussed in the greatest detail and length.
So you set them, then everyone in the family and friends say over and over "it's too dark" "why's it so dark?" "is there something wrong with it?" ..and so on
eventually you have to agree and whoop up the brightness and contrast and turn the colour down a bit ..that's better

The screen is great, it looks very sharp, but yes we need some calibration, just a little bit, you can put a O4x side by side with our N4 and see how the colors looks better and the 4x, and yes is the same panel, or maybe the n4 could be better because is newer.

The colour sucks on this screen as tested by EVERYONE including review sites and anandtech who tested it.
Its also clear to see when put next to an iphone or normal TV with decent settings.
Im going to the S4 soon as it lands this phone is just a toy to get me by
I don't get why people continuously start new threads about this non-issue. I previously owned a One XL and people praised that screen as one of the best in its time. After comparing the screen of the N4 and HOX, I prefer the screen on the N4 by far (stock colours). The HOX had a yellowish tint and no one complained about it. I guarantee most people who complain about the screen on the N4 don't even own a high quality IPS monitor. And now that we have pretty much full gamma calibration, go calibrate the screen to your liking.

Ahh, Anandtech and "EVERYONE" has time machines and reviewed the 4.2.2 setup?
It really is a lot better.
If you are rooted there is an app that improves the colors a great deal. Is called Nexus 4 Display Control and kids the app store. The optimum color setting is 238, 228, 240. Hope that helps

The screen on stock setting is pretty bad when it comes to calibration.... I used Franco's latest kernel and tried a few gamma settings and found one that MADE STOCK COLORS LOOK LIKE CRAP.
after 4.2.2 was released I decided to flash stock image to take the OTA and I just couldn't believe how horrendous the screen looked.
Seriously, I got used to the colors on stock and never thought the were bad until I was able to tweak the gamma settings. The screen looks absolutely beautiful now.

It's been quite a while that I am planning to buy Z1 but m unable to.. Just wanna be sure before spending too much on a smartfon!
My main concerns are - Sound Quality during the call & in recording a voice note or a call rec. How is the sound quality of Z1 in all these?
I have askd people and came to know that call rec is indeed successful in Z1.. So, I just want to know it's sound quality.. And how is the zoom quality in the camera? Plus, what are the flaws you people have faced in the basic functionality of the device? Pls. reply with your honest reviews! Pls..

Cover flaps handles are made of hard material, unlike ZR which uses flexible material, so this one's more prone to break

You should check the QA section, the phone have many issues, like Touch Screen, Camera Overheating...Impossible to Unlock Bootloader. I think you should wait until the Z1 come out with Android 4.3 or Kitkat and see if this issues still there or not. Don't do the same mistake like us.

I'm super satisfied with my z1. It is a big phone though, very big mind that. The screen is brilliant a tad more yellow than other deviced perhaps but it's simply a pleasure playing games or watching movied with, even with few people watching, viewing angles have improved from previous Sony phones.
I can reproduce the touch problem if I try hard but on daily use it never bothers me... Hope it will get fixed...
Sound and call quality is excellent, best i've seen so far in a mobile phone, volume is very lound on earpiece and headphones.
Thats my take, don't bloat it woth crap and it runs fast cool and perfect

Euclyptos I think it's a small minority affected by touch screen issues, I'm definitely not, the bootloader unlock Sony made it perfectly clear that if you do so it will cause things to stop working ie the camera, not really a problem tbh and if your not happy with the phone sell it and buy something you can overload with cr*p!

Hi. Z1 is a great device. I may not have a giid screen as it has a yellow hue but it is still bearable as sometimes it is noticable and sometimes it's not. The camera is great but a little improvement wouldn't hurt. Camera apps are really really great most esp the Timeshift Burst, AR Effect, Social Live. Setting aside the yellow hue, the screen is great when playing videos and gaming. Sound is good for me, loud enough for me. Sony Media apps are the best. Hardware is very classy having the black one. Super premium feeling once you get hold of. Software side, very fast and very smooth. UI is so clean. I'm very satisfies with Sony's UI. I think for me it's the best (other company's are great too but this is just my preference ) Just make sure you get the later batches and triple check the unit first before purchasing.

Both of you, first of all I do not overloaded the phone, still stock. Overloading the phone with apps do not have influence on the phone in the first place. I am not paranoid as well. When you start play a game on your device and the virtual joystick will stop working or will go crazy OR some buttons will start be pushed even if you don't touch the screen, give me a call!! and not with just 1 game.
I already made a vid about this issue, and I will do another one when the joystick stop working in the middle of the game. Thank you.
At last I love this phone but I am disappointed, I hope to solve my problem with an update on 4.3 or 4.4, that's why I said to Wait and not to not Buy it.

I have been using this phone for three weeks now, and have zero of the problems listed. I have no screen yellowing, I have no touchscreen issues, and call me crazy, but I don't need to view my phone from some silly angle, I look straight on when I use it.
I was able to leave Samsung and take my 64GB microSD card with me. Big plus. I purchased an external battery case, just in case I needed the extra juice (which I never have).
I think the difference is I am an adult with a family and a job. I don't sit for hours on end on my phone playing games or surfing the web. When I am at home, I will use my Macbook Air or Nexus 7 for that.
This phone is amazing, the screen quality is outstanding (coming from a Note 2), the microSD slot is a godsend, and the phone just feels like Sony took the time to build a quality device. I almost went with a LG G2 until I held it. It's no better, if not worse, than any Sammy product... feels plasticy and not very substantial. The call quality via bluetooth was a huge upgrade as well. (don't see many people note that)
And the big plus, I have tested the waterproof capabilities twice; once in the shower and another time at the beach. Both times, I was floored. This waterproof marvel from Sony is just flat out fantastic.
Get to know how to use the manual modes of the camera, and there's no limit. (I think most of the complaining picture takers are lazy)
Just my two cents.

I play games on my XBox 360 and XBox One, and my gaming rig for PC games. I don't need a phone for that, let alone a "virtual joystick". They have something for that already, it's called a Vita.
mate besides all the problems its a wicked phone. people prating with a perfect phone then moaning. let the phone get optimized properly ( right now everyones after updates) from sony
the touch screen is a minor issue with a couple devices affected (never the less point 1)
Screen issue some devices r and some are not ( tell u the truth if ur moving from a omled or soma like that then u will notice a difference like me (good one) but i have loved it as it like my telly but miniature)
cant tell a difference between my s!!! and this when it comes to sound quality of call speaker/ recorder
speaker at the bottoms tiny bit low but my amazing notification tone is annoying to every1 HAHA (incoming worms tune)
anyway u cant get everything in a phone perfect ( and then people who are not happy get the phones u like and shine them and then stick them straight in ur A**/ ears:laugh::laugh::laugh PEOPLE HONEST OPPINIONS PLZ:angel:

In dark room open this image and set brightness to low. You should see uniform gray color.
I think at least 90% devices has this problem.

Feel free to enlighten me but unless you spend all your time looking at a dark solid grey background, I don't see why this is an issue. I have tested mine with a similar image and to my eyes, the screen is perfect.

Many apps has dark gray background. First I didn't test anything I just noticed it in youtube app - dark mode. Its quite disappointing.
I tried all three links on another pc and they are working.

While they do have a dark grey background, there is usually something in front of the background to draw your eye to instead.
Thanks for letting me know about the links, it's amazing how editing your post, fixing the links and saving the post makes the links work. I did check the links and all I see is noise.

Not every time background is covered by content. I can clearly see difference on youtube app, top part of display is slightly lighter and greenish and bottom is darker and reddish.
I did nothing to the links. I just tried to add pictures (insert image) but it didn't work.
seems my note 9 does not have the issue u reported

Actually, mass production usually aims for less than 1% failure rate, so I'm pretty confident you got one of those >1%.
Considering YOU are the only one complaining, then yes, you're probably one unlucky person.
If you were talking about a Google Pixel 2/3, then yes, you're likely to have a **** screen, because that's how they are. Samsung screens aren't like that at all - the Note 9 has one of, if not THE best screen available on any phone.

I am pretty sure they will agree to change it + the chances to draw again a problematic display are really slim. Sadly some do have such a problem and actually I saw a lot worse on the xda forums. Return it for exchange is my advice.

It got better over the years, but still I estimate only 10-30% of all Amoled screens are perfect.
Samsung makes things right in terms of quality management, because most customers do not notice this flaw, but if you are sensible to it, it's hard to ignore!
in my threads I also explained the reason for this, which is how amoled screens are produced. they are cut out of wafers after lithography. only devices cut out of the center of the wafer have almost uniform screens. the more from a side your screen has been cut out, the worse the screen quality will be.

I think it has improved a lot since a couple of years. Before that, I used to swap my Samsung phones once or twice to get a decent one.
But the last 4 or 5 phones I bought, all with Samsung screens, were all perfect.
That includes Pixel 2 (not XL), Note 9, S8+, P20 Pro, etc....
Either I got extremely lucky to get as many perfect screens in a row, or they really improved things. Now I think it will happen to me again to have a bad one, but I'm not as nervous anymore. It's not a lottery anymore.
My Note 9 in particular is extremely impressive with a perfect screen. Perfect whites, no uniformity problem with any shades of grey at any brightness. Pure oled bliss.
BUT, I've had so many problems before that I'll ALWAYS be a little nervous before unboxing an oled screen smartphone. I've been burned too many times with crappy panels.
Let me tell you I was extremely nervous the day I bought my LG Oled 4K TV 55"..... Thousands of dollars thrown at an Oled panel lottery.... I was lucky this time again

Okay so I got another note 9 and has this issue too but in different spot. Also checked one more piece in samsung store...same.
So I think almost everyone has this uneven screen but maybe some of you have less sensitive eyes or just don't want to see this problem

So my question is, does this affect your use of the device? Is it causing wear and tear on you vision? Or is it just an OCD/OCPD effect?
To me personally, stuff like this is pointless to have an issue with even on a phone that costs $1000. Unless it's to the point where you can't use the device because you see the defect on everything.
To another comment I saw that included the word "Perfect," NOTHING is perfect, and there will never be such a thing that could be perfect because of our human definition of what perfection is. It's good to strive for Better, but it's pointless to strive for Perfection.
Btw, I did download the Pic and tested it on my Note 9 and my wife's Note 8, and the uniformity is affected on both devices. I also looked at the image on my 4K TVs and my LCD monitors and the effect is there. Are you sure the image itself is uniform?

Perfect screens exist. I have some. I have perfect eyesight. I was a combat helicopter pilot in the french army. I know what to look for. If it is there I see it. If it is not, I don't. It's a fact. It's science. Not some voodoo magic wishful thinking.
I've had terrible screens. I've had some perfect. Nowadays I get more good ones than bad.
Bad ones still exist, but it my opinion that they are less and less common.
Against clear backgrounds you won't see much apart from a slight shift in color temperature.
Against dark grey at indoor brightness you can have incredible differences between some parts of the screen.
If you use a dark theme (not black), you will see it all the time.
Does it prevents you from using the phone ? No of course not.
Does it suck on a 1000 dollars phone ? Yes.
Some people are insensitive to that kind of thing. Good for them.
It's not an OCD. It's the will to have a good looking screen.
I like good looking women. I don't think it's an OCD. I know what I want, that's all. And I want the best. Nothing less.
If you want to settle with average, good for you.

You do know that you have to have a perfect eyesight to be a combat pilot, do you ?
Acuity, color, contrast, night vision, side vision, field of view, and much more. Everything is tested BEFORE you're even allowed to go forward in the selection process.
Most people fail those tests. That's sad but that's life.
As a side note, you don't have to have perfect vision to see those screen problems.
They can be very obvious to anybody open minded enough.
Close minded people though, will always be impervious to such matter.

And yes I do know you have to have "Perfect" eyesight to join some military air forces.?
And I hope you aren't calling me closed minded. I never said someone has to have perfect eyesight to see the differences of the pixels in the image.
Anyways, I'm done with this. Quite pointless now.??
