Black or white for me it's not important. I prefer the black one, works perfectly.
One thing: When the screen change "off/on": I can see some raw weird things appear behind the screen, on the ivory-white background. When the colours come, all of them gone. Have you all?

I "think" I know exactly what you are talking about, you mean lines, dots, blotches, just about any of that, right? Do an LCD Test and report your findings, lol.

Mines just fades slowly but doesnt bother me.
I thought i just cursed myself for posting no issues when i saw this on xda..then realize it was the app lol :0

[Q] Galaxy Note Screen Issues!!!

Dear friends...
Im new here so Ill try to be breif.
I bought a galaxy Note and I have an issue.
Im not familiar with terms so I dont know if my problem is called banding or anything else of the kind.
In a page that has a white backround (happens with some other backgrounds too but especially with white) I notice this:
The white changes shades... for ex.: it could take a pink-ish shade or a green-ish shade or a light blue one. All this ofcourse as a shade and not eye-popping differences. Just noticable.
Does anyone have knowledge on this issue?
What I'm really sick about finding out is if others are facing this problem also or if this is just my devise because Im an extremly lucky person and I dropped it right out of the box!!! So my worry is if I did some damage to the screen, or if this is just an issue with the hd led display.
Any help would be highly appreciated because as you understand, I will feel much less stupid if this is a common problem, rather than having caused it myself.
Thanking in advance
Gus
Uh... sounds like you need to return it. It shouldn't change shades when displaying white.
^^^Copy that, you need to get that replaced.

Does the white change shades while you are looking at the phone directly or when you are moving it sideways and viewing from varying angles?
Same problem here
I have the same issue with the screen you describe! I thought I am the only one...Could it be a wide-spread problem and other don't notice it? it is a very faint hue change from pink to green with a variable frequency but on low-brightness is annoying as it distracts me from reading... I do not know if it is a problem with the device or a feature of the superamoled display; I did not see this on my Galaxy s1 nor S2.
So, my concern: is this going to stay like this, to degenerate or to cure by itself.
I may return the phone but due to the stock shortage I will have to stay without it and I am quite hooked by this device...
Also due to the fact that this is barely visible it may not be accepted for servicing.
I know exactly what you are talking about, and i have seen it in my device. Do not fear, it is not a hardware fault, and is not caused by your drop:
Go to settings / display and scroll down. You will see 'auto adjust screen power' and when this is checked it seems to cause this, although i agree it is barely noticeable.
I keep mine checked because i prefer the potential power savings
I want to thank everyone for their replies!
Thank you Gahshn and dannstarr.
You cant imagine what a releif it is to know I didnt cause this problem myself.
Dannstarr thank you VERY much for your settings suggestion.
Im under the impression that it DID reduce the frequency of the problem quite much but it didnt completely stop.
Nevertheless, it is an improvement.
The fact that Im not alone on this, is a releif by itself but,
anyone else who is facing the problem and has more suggestions on this, please reply!!!
I guess there's no point on taking it to Samsung now.
They'll just do a factory reset and I'll loose what ever free apps and progress within apps and games I've made.
directly my friend
Different light intensity
I have a similar problem. I don't so much see shades with different colors, but different light intensities, horizontally across the screen if you hold it in portrait mode (typical way of holding in one hand).
You mostly notice it when all the display is grey, but also a bit on white.
You can see it by downling the free tool "Screen test" and going to the third page (first is white, second black and third grey).
I made a picture of it.
Do you have this issue?
I wonder if it makes sense trying to replace it.
@ Hironimo
Yes my friend, I downloaded the app that u said and these lines DO appear maybe not as intense as shown on the photo but visible.
As far as my issue, its very nerve braking because it doesnt appear at once so if you wanna show someone what ur talking about its very difficult.
Its more vissible with low brightness and with apps with white backround like gmail or browsing etc. You observe the screen for a minute or less, and it appears.
I think we hit the jackpot with this screen and I think we should all contact samsung in Korea because they are enjoing almost my one month salary and I am getting dizzy by reading within their so called hd super amoled screen! If I only knew......

I have a similar issue - horizontal banding in landscape view and hue change of white between pink and green (!) - barely visible in plain light but annoying whan screenfilter is on (screenfilter is a free app to reduce the brightness for use at night); I have not seen other phone (none of my friends have this model) but on previous phones I had I did not notice this type of problem.
I do not think it is a defect - is more like a variation in quality of the pentilematrix I would not expect from a manufacturer this screen.
Sending for replacement may look bizarre because it is a minor problem and you may be told that no screen is perfect and have issues like this to some extent.
Yes, this is also my take on it.
It is no major defect, and indeed if I send it in for repair they may say there is nothing wrong. And if I send it back to amazon saying it is faulty they will replace it (once) and I may get a screen with the same issue.
I do have to say that on the photo it appears clearer as when you normally look at it, and in normal use you seldomly notice it.
But when I compare it with my "old" galaxy s2 I know what evenly lit means ...
My friend also tells me i thinks the defect is not big enough to do something about it.
In so many other respects I love the note.
Especialy that FINALLY they have volume controls on the headset.
But I'm very intersted to see how many others have this or similar issues...
Maybe if we are enough we can contact Samsung and get a statement.
What about creating a poll?
edit: sorry, other topic.

Uh, on the topic of screen issues.... here is mine: the super-duper-black is not that black.
See the pic, that is supposed to be full black. Granted, this was taken in total darkness and with a long shutter, but it can still be seen. Hell, I noticed it yesterday when I wanted to take notes on a black background, under standard room lighting conditions.
(This is a review device, so I'll return it anyway.)

Wow, I also have this problem and really thought it was just me because nobody had mentioned it so far. It's a problem that doesn't feel big enough to send the phone back, but is a big enough problem to annoy the hell out of me.
I have so far chosen to ignore the issue, but agree with the other comments regarding the fact that tinkering with the settings does make it less apparent. And again, I agree that I love the phone so much, I don't want to send it back for repair (if that's what it needs), but the underlying problem is... does it need a repair? or is it a feature?

So far only under moderate light and a black background. Which is what I'd use for e-book reading or writing into the note app during a session.
edit: tried it with fbreader, on night mode. You won't notice it during the evening, even with minimum brightness, unless there are a couple of empty lines. Then it looks as if the screen would be dirty.

Judging from the fact that there are many of us, it seems that it is not a matter of repair.
But... Im surprised that not all users have noticed and I sure would like the opinion of a samsung technician or a professional. Just to make sure.
But I also have difficulty turning it in...
Thats why we are here
To be convinced that it is a general issue and not individual.

Color calibration apps and Nexus 7

Hello all!
I've picked my Nexus 7 today from CPW, even though I knew of the existing screen issues. Before buying it I had the time to have a quick look at it, just to make sure hardware wise was fine. Well yes, it was fine, but the colors are not calibrated. I know it's not a new thing, but at least it's not a hardware problem (or at least I hope it's not! ).
I was wondering if any of the apps/mods available in the forum/play store can actually help with the colours of the screen? I know a few years back Nexus One had issues with colour calibration and Nook as well, and there were a few mods developed which helped with the problem.
I'm happy with my nexus and I don't really want to return it, as the new one might have excellent colours but other issues would be present.
Would appreciate some suggestions or we could simply start a discussion on the topic and what could be done about calibrating the colours.
p.s. Apologies if this is not the right thread!
I would try trinity kernel, if u flash his kernel and buy his app u can do what u want to the colors. Its still alpha tho. Im using it on my gnex and its awesome.

Screen Adjuster helps a little, but doesn't do anything about the poor gamma. And unfortunately it makes the UI a little laggy. So probably not worth it. I haven't seen anything else so far.

I must be seriously lucky, the screen on my Nexus 7 is brilliant. I have the Evo LTE, and I'm accustomed to nice screens. I get tons of compliments every day by people looking at my tablet and saying how crisp the colors and text are. I'm usually the one with the issues, but the sun shines on a dogs ass every now and then.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it now and i could actually achieve satisfying results but as u said the performance is seriously affected! At least this proves the colours can be fixed with software. I hope Google comes up with a fix of some sort !
About the crisp and clean screens... I've a galaxy s3 as well and I don't even want to compare it with the nexus!

I shined a light on my dog's ass and I saw no improvement in color response. What other steps did you take?
The gamma on mine is way off (down around 1.2 at 48% for me), but as I posted before the colour temp (on mine at least) seems excellent. Swings and roundabout I suppose. Unfortunately Android doesn't have colour management baked into the OS (neither does iOS) so there's no really practical solution at present. If you want proper calibration on a tablet sometime soon I guess the only option would be to get one of the x86 Win8 tablets at the end of the year.

I think CM ROMs usually offer calibration in the display menu? I think the upcoming CM10 will have it
My cellphone is more vibrant
But it has an amoled display. I usually run the Nexus at 25%, to save battery and because I find it too bright ( indoors anyway) to keep looking at it when it,s at 75 - 100%. If they do send a OTA fix, I might have to drop it down to 10%
Here's a screen shot at 25%. I don't know if a screen shot is accurate to show my screen brightness, but I'm good with the brightness and color.

it's pretty sad that there's only 45 votes on this issue. Here's a hint: bugs won't get fixed if people don't speak up about them. And don't think your voice exactly resonates here on XDA.
Just star it, and leave a comment. Doesn't have to be anything long winded either.

While agree it's not the end of the world, it's a complaint I see often here in kernel and ROM threads. While a lot of it is due to wonky behavior due to OC (either CPU or GPU), it's really just exacerbating an issue that is already present.
Besides, UI bugs are some of the most prevalent and immediately noticeable to more "common" end users. While functionally it's not debilitating, it's an aesthetic scar that doesn't need to be there.

Hmmm.. So I assume it doesn't matter that I need exactly 15 seconds everytime I get a notification to pull down the status bar, caused by flipbacks. Okay I'm like 1000% sure Google noticed it anyway, cause its on most devices, also 100% stock ones (like me) so...

Thanks OP, have added my star.
I had not noticed this problem but I was intrigued.
I could not duplicate the problem, but I am using Apex launcher, not the stock launcher. Does the problem occur in all launchers? Also I am not using the stock ROM.
I wonder if this problem happens with only some units, or perhaps it relates to those user's expectations. Maybe they expect their device to react more quickly than it is able to.
Far be it for me to be dismissive of people's satisfaction with their devices, but that bug-report thread has a lot of problems. It contains over-reaching claims and supposed knowledge of the problem's causes and solutions.
Again, I don't write off these people's unhappiness but I personally would not star that issue.
i too have this problem when on stock rom..now on PA beta 9 with m-kernel, the problem still exist...and it's very annoying...i even thought there was a problem with my touch screen panel and sent it to asus for repair but when i got it back, the same problem still remains..
Not starring because it does not bother me.
Life has too many other issues to worry about having to occasionally re-swipe.
Now pop-up ads in the Yahoo app could get me started...

Well over 500 people have voted to say they have a shonky screen, either one fault, several or all listed.
If Asus & Google don't by now know that there is a serious problem with QC of the actual screen and with the build quality then no amount of petitioning will work.
I noticed this issue minutes after pulling this thing out of the box, this might not bother you people who casually use their tablets, but top those of us who have been using android since the G1 notice this. It bothers me so much that I am considering taking this junk back and using the money to get a real tablet from Samsung.
This issue is so annoying to me, I not only notice it on the stock launcher, but also Nova and Apex. Now, the launcher I can deal with, but where I becomes a deal breaker for me is the browser, whether it's chrome or the stock browser in CM10. Trying to scroll around the OS that requires some flicking reminds me of trying to flick scroll on a resistive touch screen, I think that best describes the issue.
I just wanna know if it's fixable through a software update or a hardware problem, cause if it's the latter, this thing is going back, and that's too bad because it was a Santa gift, so I'll have some explaining to do.......

As I stated (not in precise terms sorry) in the OP, it would be a mistake to think that xda threads are the first place companies like Google and Asus check to see what issues people are having. They have issue and bug trackers for a reason. The universe does not revolve around our little community.
Also, this issue pertains to the general consensus that touch screen issues (like bounce back) have become exacerbated on 4.2 and above. Not anything regarding physical QC issues (though, to be fair, may very well be the root cause, but that is an entirely different issue; the fact of the matter remains that anecdotally it appears the touchscreen responded better on 4.1.2)
And besides, I'm just looking out for the well being of this device's future. Reporting bugs on bug trackers is important to these developers.

Yea the notification bar is better on 4.2.2, but the launcher still does it, nova prime does it too, and even when on dolphin or boat browser sometimes when you flick it will scroll nicely & sometimes a flick wont move the page much at all, weird and annoying, would be a much better experience if it was fixed!
This is a huge issue for me. Is there a way to increase or decrease sensitivity? Maybe that would help.

Active Notifications Flicker?

Wanted to see if anyone elses' X does this.
Go into a dark/pitch black room.
Face down your phone and pick it up / get the AN to trigger.
Watch your screen after the AN fades out.
Does your whole screen go through a wavy/flicker effect? Lasts about 1 second. Looks slightly grey/brownish. Not so noticeable when it's bright out.
I have noticed this. I wanted to see if the active notification pixels were the only ones lighting up and I think they are. However, there is that brief moment that the whole screen is emitting enough light to be noticeable.
Ya I have noticed this too but only in very dark rooms. I'm not to worried; battery life is great for my usage.

That image looks all black to me, but either way it's not a screen problem. I'm using good lock's task switcher but I just turned it off to check, mine when stock is just a slightly dimmed background. See pic. Also I've attached a good lock switcher screenshot too, maybe try it out and see if it's alright, I'd recommend it regardless as it looks waaay better than default.

I'm using good lock's task switcher but I just turned it off to check, mine when stock is just a slightly dimmed background. See pic. Also I've attached a good lock switcher screenshot too, maybe try it out and see if it's alright, I'd recommend it regardless as it looks waaay better than default.

I think it's safe to assume we both clicked on the image as we don't have super vision haha. I see a pure black screen with just the white text and buttons, I don't see any grey at all.
Ok, instead of doing a screen shot I took a picture of my Note 9 and my Note 8. I've tried 6 different pure black wallpapers and they all look grey on my Note 9. On my Note 8 I'm using the same pure black 4k wallpaper and it's black not grey. This only happens on my "recent apps" screen, everything else is black.

Send it back for a replacement/repair,don't waste any more time soliciting opinions.
While all input is well-meaning,it's doing nothing but eating up precious time for returns/exchanges before it turns into a warranty issue.

If it were a hardware fault then it would show not just on the recent tab screen, but all other black screens.?

Perhaps, but, the OP has compared the same paper & others w/another phone.
If it were me,I wouldn't waste another minute.
Of course,go through the usual steps before contacting Samsung (clear cache in recovery/factory reset if that doesn't do it).
Some here feel such returns are frivolous & drive up costs for everyone, that's what the mfgs want you to think to reduce returns.
Truth is,it's a business decision & the costs are already factored-in when they set the MSRP,whether they accept a certain percentage of defects as the cost of doing business,or,tighten up quality control to lessen the cost of servicing warranties/exchanges.
I guarantee the people who advocate for "sucking it up" for the greater good unicorn of lower costs wouldn't do so if it was their device having issues.
Regardless,if the phone is seemingly defective,it's everyone's right to expect Samsung to make good on their warranty.
If one sits on their hands & does nothing but post in forums about it,they're getting nothing but empty platitudes,as useful as a FB :good: ......

I once had an AMOLED black wallpaper on my note 8 that showed the upper area where the status bar was as slight lighter than the rest in the home screen, however in the apps screen it would be pitch black . One could notice it in a dark room. My case was software.
But yes, I get your point of view.

I've had two phones w/issues the mfg basically refused to acknowledge:
A Galaxy S3 that had Touch/zooming issues & an HTC M7 w/seriously FUBAR B/T issues on phone calls.
Haven't had hardware issues w/any phones since, but, that's where I'm coming from when I recommend people to immediately contact the mfg with any quality issues.
The sooner the better for getting the process started/documented.
At minimum,it's user error,so be it,no harm,it'll get figured out, but, only if the end user takes action directly w/the mfg if all else fails.

this is not an issue just an effect in recent apps. why would you think its a screen issue if it only happens under certain conditions/place?
note 8 is on 8.0 and note 9 is on 8.1 so maybe they just tweaked the effects a bit or maybe its just the theme.
people are so paranoid with the damn screens its beginning to be insane!
im thinking of opening a new thread for people issues using the note 9 .
note 9 paranoia is quite high, its as if people are begging for issues
Samsung customer support must be having high suicide rates this past month dealing with imaginary issues.
its probably making things hard for people that acctualy have legitimate issues... don't cry wolf

My post started with "possible" not "definetly". To my knowledge XDA FORUMS is a place for Q&A's unless I'm wrong. I'm definitely not paranoid about something that I can simply exchange. I swear some people on here contribute nothing to the forum but confusion. To the people that tried to help, Thank You.

I swapped it out. Once I updated the software on the new phone it started doing the same thing so I'm assuming that it's a software change. I compared it to a couple of friends Note 9s with updated software and same thing.
