i don't understand quiet what the problem is. Does your volume rocker not work? or your camera button? Or does it not load the or after you pressed those two?
also it would be nice if you could spell check your postings. its a little hard to read.
edit: oh, and how did you return to stock? by flashing the original sbf? If so you have to flash the vulnarable recovery again to load the or.

There are no long steps. Most of the roms keep you root after installing them, but just in case if you dont have root after installing a rom, just use Universal Androot because it's very easy and it's one click root(happens very fast).
I've already rooted using universal androot

All of the AOSP based ROMs (like CM) give you root automatically.
The issue you have is that you need a custom recovery in order to install the ROMs. These custom recoveries (OpenRecovery and drivatives) will allow you to do all sorts of neat stuff.
So, no...you don't need to re-root once you install CM7.
Actually, how do you lose root?
It's happened a couple of times that I run Titanium backup and it tells me that I'm not rooted.
It's an easy fix. I just goto AOR and do it again.
But I'm just curious as to how I can get unrooted like that.
But do we need to root for open recovery to install?

No root is necessary on a milestone (may be different on droid).
You just need to flash the vulnerable recovery and the install OR.

On most phone, root is necessary to install custom or vulnerable recoveries.
On milestone, there is no need to do this as this step is taken care of by the SBF flashing in RSD.

That link doesn't work.
Anyway, I remember that I did not have to root the phone.
The first step was applying the vulnerable sbf.
Then I was able to load androidiani openrecovery.
Once in open recovery, I could apply a ROM without root.
Heck, I think root is just an afterthought during this process.
Root is just another menu item in AOR.... the hard part was getting into AOR in the first place.
For whatever mysterious reason, I lost root a couple of times over the last couple of weeks.
CM6 didn't stop working. Titanium backup did stop working but it was nice enough to tell me that I was no longer rooted.
No big deal. I just went into AOR and rooted again.
Edit: No wonder I had deja vu... I kinda mentioned that last bit on page 1 already...
Yeah for some strange reason the link isn't working I'll try and fix it if possible

[Q] rom manager won't flash cw or amon on g1

Hey guys I'm very new to all this, I just used the z4root (Permenent root) method on my g1 dream and I would like to try a new rom on it but for some reason rom manager will not flash clockwork mod recovery or amon on it, it keeps saying that an error has occured when trying to access special privileges or something like that. does is matter if I'm using the free version or not? and do I need to put a custome hboot or bootloader on the phone as well? I've been reading for the last two days through these forums and I'm really lost and confused on how to do this. I understand that I must flash the rom from the custom recovery but can I get to the recovery through the hboot/bootloader once the custom recovery is flashed? Please help anyone. I appreciate it.
Never used z4 so cant really help there but i do know that you need a custom recovery to flash anything. So the question is can you get a recovery flashed. Can you boot into the os and log in? if so maybe you can get a terminal from the market and flash amonra from there with the instructions in his op. Not sure but worth a try.
z4root dont work proplerly try unviersal androot
Cool, hey johnson8 I really appreciate your help...so you're saying that the z4root has something to do with my phone not being able to download three recovery?

Do everything in this guide except the recovery image. You will be doing that via ezterry's thread with amonra recovery. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck

whoah.....this is false!
ROM manager has been around a lot longer than the captivate has.....and it works great on other android devices that ARENT samsung
rom manager is PERFECT for stock roms.
rom manager is bad when you have ClockworkMod built into the kernel already.!
ridethelight is on a bad roll today.
So how do i know if its built in?
Perfect 3g..little to no edge.. live in edge area.. bought the phone from a craigslist user needless to say in a 3g area.

you would check out the page for your kernel but yes it does have it.
and looking at your rom... ect. you have already flashed a rom/kernel/modem (all in one) package.
so ya go back to post 3 instructions. also to get into recovery just long press the powerbutton then press 'recovery' it is easier than the button method in post 3.

Is there a ClockworkMod for Thrill 4G & NOT LGE Optimus V?

I think I found my issue, I have lately been trying to 'Flash Current ROM'.
It had seemed that my Thrill 4G didn't save a backup in the ClockworkMod folder.
I had done some research and found out this might be my problem for not paying attention.
So is there a way I can flash ClockworkMod for Thrill 4G without having to use an LGE Optimus V version?
Did you look in the development section? There's a huge thread on clockworkmod recovery and flashing.
You can't use the Clockworkmod app.

There is currently no cwm for the Thrill. We only have a partially ported version. Which works well enough on its own for flashing directly from recovery. It still has a lot of quirks but its enough for the basics.

You need cwm to use rom manager. They're a pair. If you pm me your msn I can help you get cwm installed.
Once you have cwm Power off the phone. Then hold these three buttons simultaneously: VOLUME DOWN+3D+POWER. As soon as the phone starts to power on release the POWER button only. Hold the volume down+3D buttons until cwm boots up. From there backing up/restoring and flashing zips is fairly straight forward. Most rom threads have cwm instructions for flashing.

Can't ROOT or Boot into Recovery

So I been trying to root my phone for about an hour now. I rooted, un-rooted then rooted again, and it seems to have work (obviously you can't tell when your phone is rooted, but oh well). I'm kind of a noob in the Droid 3 section, but then I went to the Market place and downloaded the "ROM Manager", downloaded the CM9 recovery, and had the app boot into recovery but to my surprise, it doesn't work for some reason. I don't under what else I can do, am I rooted? Do I need to manually install CM9 recovery? I just want ICS on my phone, and this is driving me crazy.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Do you have Super User app on your phone ?
Yup. I do, I have no idea where it came from though.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Does it open? Look up the thread for boot two roms at once in the genreal section. Follow that and you will have ICS. You should wait tho, as a new build will be up tonight for ics.
Sent from my XT862 using Tapatalk
Yup, it opens and shows the applications that I allow, does this mean that I'm rooted for sure? I'll definitely wait for the new ICS rom tonight, just want to make sure if I can boot into recovery. I tried using the "X" and power button but it just gives me the triangle with the "!" logo inside.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
I believe in the droid 3...you hold the Power + M for recovery. Not the X.
Root checker is an app that will tell you if you are rooted. You need to either install the droid 3 bootstrap or safestrap to get cwm recovery.

You can hold Power + M, and use the volume keys to select recovery, or you can hold Power + X and it will go to recovery as well.

Well for me from manager doesn't work.. the recovery it installs does not start from app... never tried other way . Uninstaled RM and installed only hashcode's safestrap so you don't need to start in recovery.: it will give you the option to open the cwm menu from boot by pressing menu button when prompted and if nothing done then start normally..
