I'm considering buying a HTC Vivid from AT&T, from what I've read, the bootloader for the AT&T Vivid is locked, but it is possible to temporarily unlock it. I also plan to overclock my phone, I've found custom kernels that can overclock the vivid, they say that the phone needs to be rooted. But is a temp root going to give me enough access to install the overclocking kernel? I have jailbroken consoles and HP Touchpad, but I haven't really played with Android or Linux. So if please excuse me if my terminology is used incorrectly. Thanks.
You can unlock the bootloader through HTC'S dev site and get perm root. Just follow the superguide in the development section and you will be good to go.

That was helpful. I was just looking for a way to install apps to my phone. So far it seems like maybe I can modify the .bat script from the temp root method to install .apk files that way, but that seems risky and I don't want to mess up my brand new phone.

no, you just need to use some logic, and this little thing called SEARCHING
you want to install apps on your phone?
you just put them on your sdcard or download them from the phone itself, open a file manager, browse to the apk file and click on it. it will ask to install..... you are making this out to be way harder than it is. and you did not need root for that to take place. its a function of the OS, you dont need the computer in order to install apps.....this is all basic android stuff you could learn by using GOOGLE....
and you are right, this is a developers site, it is not a hold-my-hand site for noobs.....

No need to ask anywhere, google is your friend. Installing apps is very easy, and rooting isn't even necessary. As PG already said, it's as easy as using a file explorer, and also checking that box in the settings about unknown sources.

Thanks for the link, those methods are definitely easier than what I did. I edited the temp root .bat file to copy the .apk file to the phone's internal memory, then I used Astro brower to browse to that directory, then install it from there.

dude, all you have to do is plug in your phone and when it asks you set it to disk mode...it shows up as another drive on your computer...you dont need to use any kind of bat file....this is all seriously generic and basic android usage. as i stated before:
you have some reading to do......
its not to be mean, but seriously, you are asking stuff like this in the same breath as ROOTING your phone. this type of stuff isnt meant to be taken lightly or without some READING and comprehension. know what you are doing to your phone before you royally screw it up....
at this rate, i have a feeling it wont be long before we see a help thread....
I don't understand either. Why not do it the apk way? That is the easiest method. It takes like twenty second to allow unknown sources, go to file manager, click on the apk and install it.

okay im trying to root my phone i already downloaded the driver to sync to my cpu and the downloaded the rooting file change it to update and copied it to my phone. i downloaded the sdk file and extracted it to my c drive as c:/androidsdk. i did everting it ask me to opened up the command promt and entered cd first changedirectory space the entered c:/androidsdk/tools as it tells me to but says this the program cant find the path specified..can anyone tell me wat im doin wrong and y its not bein recognized thanks in advanced
Re-check your path. When I installed it looked like this:
c:\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools
YMMV
PS ... note they are backslashes not forward slashed in the path

I do it the lazy way, take the tools folder and copy it directly to C:

My point was it's clear the OP has the path wrong. Actually finding the tools folder in Windows Explorer is obviously the first step.
Also, anything he is trying to push via ADB has to be in the tools folder as well if memory serves.
Of course there is an easier way to root ...

i tried everyting...i tried even just rooting the phone by itself and rooting it with the android sdk file and it keeps sayin cant find file or no file found..i dont know what else i can do this seems so simple fellow evry directions but my phone just doesnt want to take. i even tried the one-click root and that wont work saying cant find sdcard.. im lost and getting frustrated with this..any other suggestions and thanks again for your help

Don't know what to tell you. Following the instructions in the post I linked to above is the easiest way I know of how to root, and has worked every time I've tried it.
If you can get into download mode, then maybe try re-flashing to stock with Odin One Click and see if that helps any. Or re-install your drivers.
So, you cant even copy and paste from your pc to phone via usb mass storage?
Use your phone, go to dev section, find unleash the beast or super rooter extreme, download either and place the update.zip on the root of your sd card using My Files or whatever. Reboot your phone into recovery and reinstall packages. There, youre rooted. Dont forget to delete the update.zip if you plan to use CWM.

ok great i finally after two days of trying to figure out what was wrong got it to root..i deleted all root files and my samsung kies device from my computer and started over. searched one click root and brought me here to a link with a video great vid by the way goes step by step. now that i got root on my phone any suggestings on what to do next..how do i load blocked apps to my phone now? i loaded app installer does that work? and do u got any links to loading a adobe flash player 10 app? thanks

You can use Sideload Wonder Machine or the Android SDK to sideload.
With the Android SDK, you just put whatever apk you want to load into the 'tools' folder and use the adb install filename.apk command.
Like i said, check the dev section for SRE or unleash the beast. One update.zip that does it all, root, bloatware removal, sideloading, etc.

What startngate said. Here in the captivate forum there is android developement, do a search for super rooter or unleash the beast. All the steps to run it are there. Works really well if you just want a stock rom with root and some other goodies. If you want custom roms i encourage you to read through the threads before doing anything.

And I think it has the update.zip file in it... so if that application doesn't work.. you can just install the update.zip into your sdcard - reboot into recovery and install update.zip from there.
You don't need the SDK - just need to make sure your phone can be seen by your computer. I've used it on both an XP and Win7 64-bit machine at home and it works great.
To "side-load" applications - you can use the wonder machine... or place the *.apk file on your SDCard and use MyFiles or your favorite file explorer to browse to it and it should install just fine.
I'm testing my phone out with a stock ROM - and I'm rooted/sideload avail and even have a lagfix installed with all of my apps installed in under 15-20 minutes... it is a pretty simple process to root this thing nowdays
I've given up trying to get full access to the Market. But I was able to find some of the apks on my Droid and was able to bring some of them over using a usb thumb drive. However, not all the apps I had downloaded to my Droid was visible. My question is do some apps delete their apks when done installing? I did have some that gave me a parse error when trying to install them on my tablet. Is there a hidden directory where I can find all the apks of the apps I've downloaded? e.g xplane, rush hour to name a few? Thanks. Or... is there a way to download the apk from Market to my PC directly? I'd be so happy if I could just get full access to google market!

The apks are usually in your data/apps or data/apps-private. You should be able to get to these directories using RootExplorer on your phone if its rooted. Then get yourself a free Dropbox account which allows you to transfer files to any device you installed Dropbox on.
Look in these two locations. In the second one (/mnt/asec) you'll see the folder name of the app and inside that folder is the pkg.apk so you'll probably want to rename after you move it.
/data/app
and
/mnt/asec/(name of app)

Astro doesn't show the files in /data and you'll need to be rooted and use something like Root Explorer. I just tried Astro and once I go in to /data I see nothing (and my phone is rooted). Using Root Explorer I see all the folders under /data and go into the folder app. I see my apps installed internally there and in /mnt/asec I see my apps installed to SDcard there.

No root neccessary to use Bluetooth File Transfer method.
I can only guess you need root for the method on the video because you do need to have an OS with GAPPS and Android market installed.
Root is needed to use Root explorer methed.
The Z4root1.2.2 app is a good tool to root without unlocking the bootloader and you can still keep your stock OS. However I'm assuming GAPPS may not work correctly with the stock TAPNTAP OS so getting full Google Android market with that OS is prolly not going to happen.

Now I'm fiddling with the bluetooth transfer. Got the phone and tablet paired... connection is not working yet. But I'm still trying.
Thanks too to tekrhino for the bluetooth suggestion. Got the transfer program for my Droid. I'm learning how to use it. Seems easy to set up, but won't actually send anything... Still exploring it.
The video on the Market fix doesn't work for me because no matter what I do, Market does not show up in the running apps section of settings. It doesn't even show up in system apps. It only shows up in the downloaded section.

I use TitaniumBackup syncing with dropbox, but really the market fix isnt hard... Running tntlite larest.
+1 for dropbox. You can also use astro to backup the apk's. They are stored in a folder named backup on the root of your SD card.
I use the program AndroZIP from the Market on my phone.
Do an application backup (part of the app) to my SDCard (it creates a app_backup folder on your SDcard)
Then, you can do bluetooth transfer, or plug phone and gTablet into PC with USB cables, wait for the drives to show up, and move the APK files over. Works well. No root required.
Since my phone is not rooted, I am not sure if this is grabing every application, but it seems to be. I was able to transfer whatever I wanted over from my phone to the tablet this way.
+1 titanium backup and dropbox.
Dropbox is handy but not necessary. Titanium is a must have purchase if you enjoy flashing new roms and don't feel like manually restoring all your apps and settings every time.
If you can download titanium to your Gtab your done. Dl titanium on your phone and backup your apps. Grab the file off your phones SD And move it to your Gtab. Open titanium on your Gtab and select the apps you want to install. You can even save app data this way and continue saved games from your phone ;-)

Make sure both devices have BTFT installed, that way you won't have any any problems with FTP OBEX protocals.
The app works great and reduces the extra steps you need to take with TB and DB with having to move apk's between the source device to your pc then from your pc to the target device. BTFT is a good source device to target device app.
Would appreciate it if someone can explain to me the difference between a kernel and a Rom.

A kernel is a piece of software (kind of like a program/executable) that interfaces directly with your hardware and provides a standardized interface for higher level software to use that hardware.
ROM means Read Only Memory. In this case, ROM is not the proper term but it is in common usage despite the fact that you can write it/overwrite it. Regardless of the details, for your purposes, a ROM is the higher level software that provides interfaces between the kernel and you. E.G. the libraries, windows manager, etc.
I am unsure in this context, but I think the ROM contains the CSC stuff too. The CSC contains stuff specific to a particular locale or vendor such as programs like Layar or codes for APNs.
I followed the above Let Me Google That For You link and this thread was the first one that popped up. I quickly browsed a few other threads but getting any real meaning was going to be quite tedious.

The kernel manages system resources and functions like a bridge between applications and hardware. One could compare it in many ways, but this is generally what it does.

May I know how exactly do I push the apk to /system/app? I have Root Explorer installed already.
Do I move the apk to /system/app then install it from there? Or am I supposed to install the normal way, then shift the apk from /data/app (where apps are usually installed to right?) to /system/app?

Normally you just have to click on the *.apk (with any file manager) and you can install it.
At first, you need root.
After that, you have a few ways to do this:
Way 1: Use any File Explorer, which can get SU permission and access the system folder.
Then copy & paste
Way 2: You could connect your device to your computer with a USB cable (Debug-Mode on!).
Then you couls google a ADB tool.
Or you open the command line and type this into your cmd:
cd [drive]:\[folder where adb is located]\
adb root
After that you could find out where you are with the "ls" command.

Yes, but you'd have to do it manually at this point.
You'd delete busybox and su, uninstall superuser.apk, and there may be a symlink you need to undo, but I think the latest one-click cleans that up. I'd have to go back and check.
And any bloat you froze needs to be unfrozen, or bloat removed needs to be restored.

I'm trying the one touch unroot and keep getting an error about the /sdcard/d3unroot folder missing files.
I extracted all of the APKs from your link to my /sdcard/d3unroot directory, but for some reason one touch unroot will not work.

root your device (most Motorola Gingerbread devices)
unroot your device
restore your /system/app, even if you deleted files
And a bit more, such as un-freezing apps if you un-root just like Titanium Backup can.

Basically, yes.
I'll use your desktop as an example, so if you have:
Desktop\New Folder\Pete's Motorola Root Tools.exe
Then you'll want to extract all the files for the /system/app fix to:
Desktop\New Folder\restore
So that you have:
Desktop\New Folder\restore\AccountAndSyncSettings.apk
Desktop\New Folder\restore\AccountAndSyncSettings.odex

Ok thank you, I'll give this a shot again.
EDIT: I have it set up as:
Desktop/PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.03/restore/(all the apk's)
And I'm still getting the:
ERROR: /restore/ backup doesn't exist or is incomplete! etc etc
ok i just unrooted and all is good now im rooting agian. so thank you for this on click unroot meathod. its good to know that if i want to unroot i can. You should put this on every forum that you can. I will aslo tell people about it. You did a good thing for the people on this one. I think a lot of new people will whant to root now that they have a way to undo it.

Got a $50kindle just as a reader and to store all my work pdf manuals and docs. I want to create folders and move the files to the sdcard. I can't find a file manager app that is able to do this. Seems to be a write issue. Do I need to root just do this simple thing? Assuming root would give access. Managing files from PC would defeat purpose.
At this time, I want to change as little as possible about the OS and device. If I root it will I be unable to get updates from Amazon?

try ES FILE EXPLORER...i do that but i have root so don't really know if it works with or without root... give it a go.
Also if you root you will not get updates from Amazon, but the rooting gives you a whole new features and open the tablet for greater things... also try to install Greenify and then, this will work like a 150$ tablet...

Rooting by itself won't change the way the OS operates on the surface. Most people who root then manually disable future OTA updates. If you don't manually disable future updates, then you should still get them. Any future updates from Amazon, though, could very well revoke root access, meaning you'd be right back in your current situation, i.e. unable to write to your SD card.
