NoRefresh enabler - Nook Touch Themes and Apps

Hi,
I am trying to put a code together to control the refresh behavior of the e-ink screen. The final goal is to have a drop-in library for app developers to help making their app more e-ink friendly.
The proof of concept works already for the PRS-T1, but needs a different driver for the Nook Touch (N2EpdController included).
My one and only beta tester gets the famous "There is a problem parsing the package" error. Pls find enclosed the sources.
I would be grateful if someone could fix possible Eclipse setting or other errors.

Page Turner - Epub Reader with position sync

Has anyone tried this app to see how well it works?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nightwhistler.pageturner.ads
I found it to work great between my Nexus 7 and my Galaxy Nexus, and I'm wondering if it's worth nootering my Nook for
For anyone willing to try it out, you simply import the epub file on both devices, then after reading on one, from the other, with the book open, press menu and "sync reading progress". After that, I think it stays synchronized between the two devices as best I can tell.
Keep in mind for testing that the sync uploads and downloads don't appear to be instant so it might take a few minutes for changes to get pushed, which is fine by me.
I spent a long time trying to find a good solution for a reader app that would stay synced between devices and I found this one to be the best! Hope it works well on the Nook!
Just installed, when i open it, it just flashes and go back to launcher screen.
Tried it also, same result. It's a pity... Sounded promising.
can anybody get a logcat of the app crash? I'm going to point the dev to this thread..
i never did a logcat before, i hope its right.
just opened ddms, opened logcat, then go to pageturner and opened, this is the result:

wont you be better of using fbreader and fbsync plugin.

PageTurner for Nook Touch
I've been working on getting PageTurner to work with the Nook Touch.
The changes aren't in the main PageTurner build, but you can get a preliminary test build here:
http://www.projectgus.com/files/pageturner/PageTurner.apk
Please let me know if you find any issues. The PageTurner author Alex hasn't reviewed the changes yet, but in theory he's happy to merge them - so at some point the Google Play versions (PageTurner Pro, etc.) will also support Nook Touch.
Source is at
https://github.com/projectgus/PageTurner/tree/nook_touch
Changes for Nook Touch:
* Fix segfault at startup (seems no OpenType font support on Nook Touch.)
* Support hardware buttons for page forward/back (direction configurable in Settings.)
* Better defaults (disable animations, bigger font, etc.)
* Workaround broken Nook theming, so no white-on-white text in dialogs.
* Disable the shelf background image.
installed and it work \o/
I have not test all function for the moment. but try all this week

I'm quickly chiming in as the author of PageTurner... I don't own a Nook myself so I can't test it.
I have been coordinating with projectgus to see which changes are needed for the app to support the Nook without compromising other devices.
In the mean-time please post your experiences, either here or in the PageTurner forums or Github page... especially if something doesn't work right or crashes the app, I'd like the hear it.

Hi NightWhistler,
For my part I've been using PageTurner on my NST daily with no crashes. I'm loving being able to read on my Nook and seamlessly switch to my phone. Battery life seems very good also, even with the wifi left on.
I have some commits for the comments you gave me on github, I just want to test them a tiny bit more and then I'll push them.
I did change my font from Gentium Book Basic to Droid, I got eyestrain reading on my Nook with Gentium. It might just be me, or it might be the sub-par font rendering on e-ink displays (Android libskia still has anti-aliasing enabled but the screen doesn't render it well.) My eyes are fine with Droid, and I still use Gentium on my phone!.
I noticed one weird thing, which is PageTurner seemed to forget my (local, not synced) book position one time. I noticed because I opened the book on a tram so I didn't have wifi available to do a networked sync. I'll try to reproduce this and let you know, I don't think it's Nook related.
Great e-reader in general. I'm looking into the possibility of making an update that removes everything from my Nook apart from it (because I don't really use it for anything else.) It's not really necessary though, works fine for me now.
Cheers,
Angus
Have posted a second test build, incorporates Alex's latest changes and should fix the bug I mentioned above (PageTurner Nook sometimes forgetting where you were up to if the sync server was unavailable.)
http://www.projectgus.com/files/pageturner/PageTurner.apk
Commits also pushed to github. Comments & bug reports from NST users very welcome.
Just installed on my nst. Unfortunately I need an access key to test the sync feature.
I'll try it for awhile and see how it does before deciding...
Thanks for paying attention to NST users though!
Hmm, I can imagine that you'd like to test the sync feature before deciding if it's worth paying for.
On Google Play you can do that by using the ad-supported version, but there is no ad-supported version of the dev build yet.
Here's the alternative though: you can e-mail me at [email protected] and I'll send you a trial key for free that expires after a week.
If more people are interested in this I can set up something more formal / automated for it.

Sure, smart thinking
I've formalized it a bit now, all the temp keys have an automatic lifetime of 30 days... that should give you enough time to try it out.
I would like to ask that you grab the APK file from the beta folder on the site. There's a link at the top of my dev blog (I'm not allowed to post links here).
That's the beta build I'm currently testing... it should be pretty stable, but I want to get as many bugs out as I can before putting it in the Google Play Market.
Thanks for the app it works really well, syncing on my phone tablet and nook simple touch. Is there a way of changing it so the screen updates fully every six page turns as in stock nook app.

I don't own a Nook myself right now (any pointers on webstores that will ship one to the Netherlands are very welcome!), so I can't really implement that behaviour at the moment.
If someone can send me a patch for it I'll gladly accept it
A new NST on eBay goes for about £55 including postage to you.
There is a post in android development regarding a custom kernel and fast mode there may be some info that is useful to you there.

[APP] Tiny Tiny RSS reader

Hi,
Tiny Tiny RSS is a PHP web application that gives you similar functionality than Google maps. Tiny Tiny RSS Reader is it's official Android reader that talks directly to the server using it's API. The app is made by 'Andrew Dolgov' and hosted in GitHub. This is the app I use to read all my RSSs.
As I use it every day to read the news I wanted to spend some time trying to make it work better with the Nook Touch. So, I grabbed the sources this morning and the changes that I made so far are:
Changed API level to support Android 2.1 (Nook Touch)
Theme is light by default (black on white)
Various font sizes were changed to be bigger
Removed animations (that anyway didn't look nice in the Nook)
Added 'Page up' and 'Page down' buttons on article view (as scrolling is always a mess in the Nook)
Right now is a lot more usable, I'll do a few other changes if people over here are interested. Frankly, requiring a server (or a friends one that allows multiple users) I don't think many people will be using this but I just wanted to share this.
I also have another pending modifications for Aard Dictionary, an app that allows to have the entire Wikipedia offline (without images). That is, for me, a must. There are some problems with navigation and paging that I want to fix to be a lot mor usable on the Nook.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the developers/hackers on the forum for enabling the Nook Touch to do much more than it was intended to.
Cheers!
EDIT: Added a few screenshots
Thank you for your effort, even though it's not suitable to me it's great to see more tailored apps for the Nook Touch.
I am still on the look out for the perfect offline (full content) rss reader for the Nook.
Tell me if you find it
Tiny Tiny RSS Reader also has very nice offline support (retrieving even images) but, of course, you'll need the server side somewhere...

For now I am using ifttt.com to point my google reader feeds to Instapaper and read them on InstaFetch..
I tried to change some things for Nook compatibility in the current version (a trial-free repository of the app can be found here: https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=tt-rss&fdid=org.fox.ttrss), but I keep getting errors I know nothing about, even when I made no changes.
This begs for an update, would be so great!
Did you fork the github repo? If so could yo share? I think we could probably move it to heroku and for a few users it would stay within the free limits.
After some trial and error I've installed TinyTiny on my raspberry pi locally, it would be great if I could get it to grab full rss but so far it seems to not want to cooperate.
Cheers
About updates
Hi Guys,
I wasn't paying attention here, I thought nobody needed/used TTRSSR app on the Nook.
I'll find the source code and move it to github. The fork I did was for a not-very-new version of the reader because it started requiring a bigger API level than the current Nook supports. I don't think is worth backporting all the new UI/features to the Nook considering there will be a lot of effort involved. However if I publish the code maybe I can get some other developers to hop in and see what happens.

[Guide] Installing Arch Linux (updated 11/4/2013) bluetooth+KDE

I've began to write up a guide for getting Arch usable on the Nexus 7. I just threw it up on google docs because I'm too lazy to try to do the wiki thing until it's more complete. Hopefully it is far enough along to get things rolling for people who are looking to experiment with arch.
Anyway, it's a work in progress, if anyone has suggestions, correction, completions, criticisms, etc then holler.

For the section on setting up fastboot and adb...it's safe to assume someone installing arch on the nex7 probably has arch on their pc too. For arch, you need to set up access to the AUR, with a package manager that has access to it, i.e. yaourt. Then you can get android-sdk-platform-tools. The rest of the guide looks good. I personally like wicd for my network manager as it is easier to add and remove networks when you go to new locations, and I installed e17(enlightenment desktop).

Thanks for the feedback
I don't have arch on my pc at the moment, so it's not a given, but i think you are right that people are probably more likely to have arch if they are looking at this guide. I updated the guide with info on how to install the tools from AUR. Also added links to wicd and Network Manager in the arch wiki so people are aware of some options if they don't like netctl, and mentioned that e17 works.
Xorg with alarm on nexus 7
Okay, got ALarm installed on my nexus 7 8GB.
For Xorg, I used files from "plasma active" nexus 7 distribution.
Just take them from the plasma active and put them into your /etc/X11 and X should work.
(I can't post a link, must wait 10 posts, I'll link the files later or you can PM me)
My only problem now is to put a cross-compile toolchain on my computer to be able to compile e17 with illume modules. Tried to compile on my tablet but it's too slow and I've not enough disk free to finish. If anybody can help on this point…
What distribution are you using on your PC? Also you can pm me the link for the xorg configuration and I'll post it for you

I have bluetooth (almost) working. I've put instructions in the guide. They aren't really a final solution, but maybe people who are running gui's can tell me if they work. I know I have the hardware working because I can see my keyboard when I scan for it, but I can't figure out how to get bluez5 to pair from the command line. Hopefully someone has better luck with a gui?

My Arch Install
Hey just wanted to add my install experience to the thread hopefully to help others. First of all I want say thanks for all documentation from the previous posters. I tried to follow the instructions as close as possible for a kde install, but I ran into some trouble with lightdm, so I tried kdm instead. And I can happily report it has worked swimmingly. Instructions on how to setup kdm, navigate to /usr/share/config/kdm. First edit the kdmrc to turn off the themed greeter. Then add the xvkbd to the XSetup file as in the lightdm setup. Another thing I did was utilize the plasmaboard widget on my main kde panel for my on screen keyboard once I log in. It seems to work much better than xvkbd for me. I can also confirm flash is working great.
So this really close to totally replacing my linux laptop, especially when I am on the go, in fact I am writing this post on the device in arch. However one key piece is still missing for me is sound. I can't seem to coax any sound out the device with my arch install, and amarok crashes on startup, even though both these items were working perfectly in ubuntu. If any one has any ideas how to make audio and amarok work I would be immensely grateful. Also thanks again, I am so happy to be rid of the X11 touch race condition. I have added a screenshot of me editing this post for those interested as well.
Figured out sound!
I think i found a solution to all of my troubles from my previous post. Amarok started working after a pacman update. My general audio problems seem to be caused by the linux for tegra audio drivers lack of head phone jack detection, I found a workaround the ubuntu nexus 7 launchpad bug tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-nexus7/+bug/1068804/comments/24. For the tldr crowd basically you have to use alsamixer manually mute and unmute the int_spkr channel for speaker audio and the int_mic channel to enable headphones. Then you can use the output and and hp to channels adjust volume for speaker and headphones respectively. It also might help to do a suspend resume cycle i sound still isn't working. Thanks to everyone else, hopefully others will find this useful as well.
Many thanks for your work!!! I'm using it on a nexus 7 with glass and touch broken (unuseless) but now it lives!!! and is a very responsive lxde desktop with xrdp starting on boot which I use with amule or bittorrent all night long...
two questions:
1) for me it does not work shutdown -r now or reboot... it close immediately all network connections but I have to keep power button 10 sec to restart system...
2) using it with an hub usb I'm trying to connect a big hard disk: pcmanfm (lxde file manager) refuse to mount it saying than it is not authorized... (I've followed archlinux wiki: it work on my archlinux desktop but not in nexus 7).

[VIDEO PRODUCERS NEEDED!] What Is Your Perfect Teleprompter?

As a filmmaker, I shoot several different types of videos. One thing I have been trying to do is find a cost efficient teleprompter. With so many inexpensive tablets on the market, using an Android app seems like the most logical solution to this problem. I have tried several apps so far but none of them seem to fit my needs 100%.
I am not a developer, I am a filmmaker. I do however, have spoke to a developer interested in helping me solve my problem by creating a app from the ground up that is design exactly how I want it to be with the functionality that it needs. Before embarking on this task I would like to get some feedback from other video professionals and app developers alike on things ranging from currently available apps, things that are wrong with currently available apps & features that would be included in The Perfect Teleprompter App.
I expect that there will be a lot of responses that say there are options currently available and that the need for yet another teleprompter app does not exist. That being said, unless I find an app that has an interface that I like, the functionality that I need and the peripherals to make it even better, I will probably continue to pursue this project. THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD is to allow other filmmakers to provide their input and thoughts about what the perfect teleprompter app would be.
Features I currently have in mind (This list will change as I receive feedback. ):
Clean, Usable Interface
Dropbox and Google Drive Access
In App Editing
Speed Control during prompting
Text Size Options
Light & Dark themes
Movable Location Arrow (An arrow on the side of the screen that allows you to move it vertically to show the target location of the line being read.)
Bluetooth connection so your phone could be used as a remote.
Wired remote option
Mirror Mode
Scroll to any part of the script and start it rolling from that location
Free, fully functional version (No Ads)
Custom app branding (change splash screen to display your companies logo)
I want this thread to be a way for all of us to collaborate and make an app that we all enjoy using. It is a big project for me to take on and because of that, I feel it would be silly to keep it all to myself. Please post any suggestions, questions, idea or concerns. My goal for this project is to finally provide a teleprompter that does exactly what we need it to do as a producers. Thank you for the help and feedback and hopefully together we can get this app launched for everyone to use.
Thank you so much,
zpeverman

[Q&A] [HOW TO] Install Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile

Q&A for [HOW TO] Install Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [HOW TO] Install Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Hello, I was giving this a try but when I try to connect my phone to the PC it says "Error connecting to ADBD. Error code = 7", any suggestions on what to do?
Thanks.
Sorry for some reason this went to the incorrect place, please delete this thread.
I seem to be getting "Error 14: Cannot boot Astoria platform" on my Lumia 925, even though its supported. Windows 10 and 8.1 SDKs installed on desktop, latest build of W10m, developer settings on and discovery on. I tried unregistering from 8.1 registration too but that didn't help.
I fixed Developer Menu crashed
I just tested Kingdom Rush, it works fine. Some fps drop from time to time, but totally playable.
problem while using project astoria tool
after entering wconnect.exe usb in command prompt i got this error
The procedure entry point EventSetInformation could not be located the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.dll, what should I do?
I tried to do all these instructions but got an error with "IpOverUsb", which did not manage to solve. In task manager this service is running, but crashes constantly. Does anyone knows, how to solve this issue?
So, tried this on my testing device (Lumia 830), but am getting Error Code 14 which suggests my device isn't supported?
Did anyone else get this, of anyone got it working on a Lumia 830?
APK to W10M Tool
Hi everyone!
I'm Antonio de la Iglesia from Microsoft Insider, a Microsoft fan spanish website. I've released a tool to do everything for you, one install, no command lines, etc. Only you have to drag an drop the apk in the box:
Download link is on: bit dot ly 1MddHUK (I can't post links or images, sorry)
Applications I tested and are working: Angry Birds 2, Plants vs. Zombies 2, Impossible Road, Facebook Messenger (head chat only works inside the app), Facebook, Whatsapp, Fruit Ninja, Dumb Way to Dies 2.
Apps that have not worked: Never Alone (stuck on a black screen), Prince of Persia Shadow and Flame (not start), The Room Two (eternally in the loading screen), Storm Rush (missing textures), Heartstone ( forever on the pub entrance screen ).
And I wanted to talk with yours about Snapchat. Currently it is impossible to use the official due to check with the services google, put the Casper can be installed. I can login and view snaps, but the native Casper camera does not work (is a black image). It is possible to make the camera work going in the settings and switching to the native camera phone however it does not help much. With this option activate the camera opens and I shot the photo but when I confirm, the application simply returns to the home screen without letting me post. If I enable the "Chose document chooser", when trying to choose a photo in the gallery I will have access to Windows applications choice of menu and I can get there in the gallery, camera or drive but it does not help much because that:
The Android has no access to the Windows file system and Windows also does not have access to Android file system . You do not need to activate the Blackbary option for camera work, it will open even without this option . The problem is that when you take the picture it is saved in a Windows directory and then when he tries to send to Casper, HERE IS ERROR . The camera does not have access to android files . The same applies to the gallery. If you enable the " Chose document chooser ", by clicking on the gallery you will be brought to application choice screen. Here you can choose the camera and the phone's own gallery. Again , when you select a photo from gallery an error occurs saying that was not possible use the file. This is again because the gallery can not send the file to Casper . Here is the whole problem.
My girlfriend is pissed me off to make this application work and I can not . I am in contact with Caster developer also to try to fix the problem. if we can bypass this issue of access to the file system , I'm sure it would work. You guys have any idea ? Sorry for my bad English. It is not my first language .
For Developers mode on Windows 10 Mobile crashing
Hey guys. I'm new to software development on Windows Phone but I've been using my Lumia devices for more than a year and a half now. Lately, I've been testing the builds for Windows 10 Mobile. I am currently on build 10166 running on my Lumia 1520. Due to the recent development, I tried to install APK files on it via the leaked Project Astoria porting tool and it worked great until the "For Developers" option started to crash and I am unable to install the APKs anymore since I can no longer pair my device to the sideloading app on my PC.
I've downloaded the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK as they said that I can "unregister" my device from there and it will regain access to the "For Developers" settings on my Windows 10 Mobile. After the installation, I plugged my phone in to my laptop and then I tried to hit Connect from the SDK, but I ran into an error that says "Waiting for Update Pack" wherein it prompts me to install an update. After i click update, an error code 0x80004003 - Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Says something about Phone Tools Update Pack. How can i get through this?

So not matter what method I do or what version of windows my PC is running(I've tried 8.1, and 10) I keep getting the same error "Creating session... Server Error. Error Code=1" and that goes for APK Deployment Application a trying it with the wconnect.exe through CMD.
Anyone got a clue as to how to fix this error, I haven't ran crossed it yet on any of the sites covering this. I'd hate to have update my Lumia 1520 to 10 just to find out my only reasoning for doing so was a bust...
how?
How did you guys do this deactivate developer tools using Windows Phone 8.1 SDK. Can someone post a direct link the download. Every time I search for it, it pulls up Visual Studio. I'm sure that where it is but I've played around with visual studio and I'm not seeing this deactivate developer mode......
Keyboard problem
Hi Everyone!
I tried a lot of android applications in my Lumia 930 (build 10166) - for example: german dictionaries, dumb ways to die 2 game, lumosity, outlook web app... and so on- and everything was just perfect. Hovewer, when I get the windows 10 update 10512 my applications become useless, because I can not use the keyboard in the applications (not come up), so I cant fill in the necessary field, for example to log in to my account. I tried to delete and install apps again, but it doesnt help.
Does anybody has an idea to solve my problem?
Thanks for your help!
AFter upgrade my Lumia 1520 to latest build 10512 then I cannot active keyboard in Android app.

Keyboard problem since 10512
Since my update to 10512 the keyboard doesn't open in sideloaded apks
Anyone with a similar problem?
Sadly, I will need to report that Sideloading APK's on the latest build 512 (At least on the 1520) is causing the windows keyboard to not load. This means you cannot type at all in the app. Will continue working on this and report a solution if found.
