It's been SEVEN (7) MONTHS. I'm a noob. Help! - LG Optimus Black

Guys, I am really now bored with my LG Optimus Black. It's now been SEVEN (7) MONTHS since I stayed on Stock Rom. I never tried and was afraid of trying to flash or change Roms. The only thing I did was to change launchers.
Now I'm really bored and I have now the courage to do this stuff but unfortunately, I'm a noob. I HOPE someone here could direct me or give me a step by step process on how to change make my OB look like a WP7 phone or an official ICS phone? Please? I like the interface of the WP7 in sms and it's font. But the launcher itself is really a battery eater.

If you want it to look like WinMo, simply go to Market and choose one of the lots of different Windows Mobile-like Launchers.

noob
yeah good luck its not that difficult

im guessing you dont want to just theme your phone any longer.... i was the same with you up till abt a month ago and was also pretty confused but figured it out with help from the good good people in here =)
im just gonna put it in step by step
any detailed explanation and links to stuff can be found in Nooby's How To Thread so get your tools there
1) root your phone, most common ways are super one click or blackjack (blackjack only for froyo phones)
2) if not installed ald (with the root) install CWM and superuser
3) once rooted (and have CWM & Su), download rom of choice and place rom's zip file in sd card root and install rom of choice through CWM (check if the rom youre installing requires you to wipe all cache ie davik etc or factory reset, and follow accordingly)
4) once you do that done go through the OB Themes & Apps Forum and look for a compatible theme to the rom youve earlier installed
5) dl the theme of choice, place it in your sdcard root and flash via CWM
6) once flashed make another backup (what i do is take out the first backup file and store it on my computer *do not rename it, take the whole 'TitaniumBackup' folder* although not neccesary i do it anyway cos it makes it easier for me to identify which file i wanna restore from)
7) enjoy your phone
hope this helps.........

Thanks for the guide ! i was reading the "Nooby's How To Thread" but still had some doubts.
I want to install "Zeus v4.02b".
So, if i understood well:
1) root my phone depending on the version i have, since i have stock rom, Blackjack should work.
2)install CWM (as said in the "Nooby's How To Thread"), and just follow the guide to flash a new rom.
3)Do another backup
4) DONE !
misc:
Zeus rom already have a custom kernel included right ? so i don't need to worry about that?

Yup as stated in the Zeus thread, only install the alternative kernel if you have problems with the in built one, and one last minor thing, I don't think there are themes for the v4 variant yet, and have you read up on the Zeus thread? Best to see what are the minor bugs of v4 and how to troubleshoot them first....

i didn't knew that about themes.. but that's not a problem for me.
The only bug that i saw that will bother me is the LG notifications...
Do you recommend other rom ? I was going for nova, but it seems old and outdated (2.2). So i read this, and opted for zeus.

I won't recommend one over the other man, each rom has its own pros and cons, and I don't think its nice to do that
Just try flashing one first, then when you get the actual feel of doing it, you'll be more confident about trying different roms and figuring out which suits you best
To a point its kinda addictive to me now lol... cos with every successful flash, feels like I'm getting a new phone....
Oh and the notification bug is not all bad, I still get my notifications good enough

Well said dude! I really appreciate what you did and for the help. I'll do that as soon as I am not busy. It's hard to do these stuff if it conflicts with your work. Anyway, thanks again for a much shorter and briefer way of the steps.
Off topic:
I've been asking help previously from some people here but unfortunately, I did not got any replies. Hope some of you here could help.
I was requesting to mod the Go Sms Pro application to look like our stock messaging. I tried to do it, but failed. I only wanted to change the Go Sms Pro icon same with our stock icon and change the name of it as Messaging.
I love the interface and the ability to customize with the Go Sms Pro but I dislike the icon. Can anyone here do it? Please.
Sent from my LG-P970 using XDA App

K the way I do it is this, install a home launcher that supports icon changes and change the icon through there, I'm using go sms also and my icon is a bird I made myself hee try to look for my screenshots in the screenshots thread hee
I didn't do much actually man, just parroting what the ppl here have taught me, just don't forget to do the same for newer noobs that turn up over time hee...
One thing I appreciate after reading other forums on XDA boards is the lack of flamers in our OB forums
I'm using adw you can change it without using 3rd party launchers but I believe it includes modifying framework stuff and that is something which is way above my head..... for now.....
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda premium

I alreaduly tried that. But I wanted to keep the stock launcher. The only thing I hated is that the messaging threads are white. It's somewhat not pleasant in the eye. Unlike Samsung's default messaging, the background is black.

There are different "wipes" it means formatting a partition, to be short.
You need to make a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, go to advanced, do a dalvik wipe, and a battery stats is always good, if you install a new ROM. You can read all this in my NOOB guide, if you want to

BTW, if you're going for the Zeus ROM, flash v3.1/2n. It's much more stable than v4. (Unless you REALLY need the GPS fix). Huexxx is working on the issues so just wait
Also, Marvel 2.1 is another good ROM. I say flash all try all

Imho v3n is perfect for me.... gps lock within 20sec max, battery averaging 20 hours moderate use with 3g always on and overall smoothness and dependibility and yeah Gabwerks theme hee now it feels like I cannot look at my phone w/o his ics port and I cannot live w/o Huexx v3 hee

3N should be the best choice for you, since it is the european version. There isnt really a big difference, between v20n or v20b. The main difference is the language support and 3N surely also supports Porugues, but idk about 3b, but it think it also does. You can also try both versions here and stick with the best one for you. As long as Huexxx didnt fix the SoDs, I wouldnt flash a higher version, unless you really know, what you are doing and what you can/should do in case something doesnt work/crashes/gets stuck, and so on... But I guess it wont take too long, till he has figured out, what is going wrong/where the bug is. And meanwhile, you can try all the different ROMs we already have And maybe when you tested all of them for a couple of days, we might already have LEZO/MIUI/a new Zeus/new Marvel/new Noa/maybe an ICS port/stable CM/... so as you can see, you will have/be able to test a lot

Super Nova Q&A

Hey Guys I put together a Q&A thread for this rom to prevent tons of new threads about rom Spicific questions from new users.. Please feel free to post any questions here.
As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.

Would anyone like to post there likes and dislikes about the ROM so people who do not have it can know what to expect?

This thread is for issues related to the rom. Likes and dislikes are user based and will not do any good as for what to expect and all custom roms are a best for you type of thing. I could say that I like this this and this about the rom but some one else would say that they dont like the same things. See my point? Each rom has an outline for the rom in the first post.
Love the rom. I'm on 2.1 and have noticed my camera won't work, just FCs. Extracted some old phoenix and SN roms I had on my phone and tried to copy the .apk and camera firmware into system/app using root explorer and reboot. No luck. Any ideas? I would prefer not to reflash.
Thanks in advance.

In addition to the point that each user/device could respond differently to the ROM/Modem/Kernel. The 3 of us could be running identical setup's and all have very different experiences

Just wanted to say thanks for starting this thread. As a noob it's nice to have a way to communicate until you reach your post count.
I am running;
Rom: super nova 2.1
Kernel: speedmod-k13b-500hz #54
Baseband version: i9000ugjk4
The problems I am experiencing aren't a major deal, just thought I would mention them.
1. When I am connected to wifi and try and use the Facebook app I get a connection timeout message. While using at&t data I don't.
2. I get a FC when trying to open the Fox News app.
Enjoying Adams and teams work, thanks.

Try restoring the stock email.apk that came with the rom, no idea why they're tied together but they are.
As for FCing on the Fox News app, I got that too and just uninstalled it, not sure why it was doing that.

Has anyone checked their "About Phone" info under the settings after flashing the 2.3 download and still see their "Build number" as Supernova 2.1??
Shouldn't this be 2.3 instead of 2.1 or was the revision number suppose to stay the same this update?

Thank you for letting me know. I went through a few pages, but I must have not looked at early enough postings to see anyone comment about it.
I could tell the update took effect when the kernal was updated to Speedmod and some other graphical difference when flashing from 2.1, but just wanted to make sure.
Also, does anyone know where to grab the 2.1 ringtones from the zip file? There was a nice one in there that I'd like to get back.
Thanks in advance

I am on 2.3 and this is my favourite one so far. Really enjoy the Phoenix team roms. With other roms I have noticed that when you touch the screen the soft home keys do not light up. If you touch the keys themselves they light up for only 3 seconds. I found I had to use an app/widget called keep the lights on for that issue. With this rom however, the soft keys work perfect. If I touch anywhere on the screen they light up for 10 seconds or more just like my stock did.
If I ever check out another Rom is there something I could import from this to keep that great feature? I don't think I will be flashing for a while after this one. But once flashaholism sets in sometimes I have no choice...lol

Thinking About Migrating
Hello all, I've been a loyal Perception user since I purchased my Captivate and tried out several of the active ROMs. I've started to look for a new ROM since DG announced that the Perception line was defunct. I have a few questions regarding Supernova:
1) Are there other themes, loaded stock, with the ROM. The black one from the screenshot isn't really my style.
2) Does this ROM include the three-button fix? My phone is one of the unlucky few that cannot boot to recovery mode via button holding.
3) For those of you who have flashed many a ROM and decided to use Supernova, what do you like about it best? Why did you select this ROM over the others available?

1) Yes there are other themes, I am currently running SN JS5 version and using Nunhugger's Absolution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10254722&postcount=5
at this point, it appears most JPY/JS5 themes will work with any JPY/JK3/JS5 ROMS
2) My phone also does not have 3 button. But it has the extended power menu, long press on the power button gives you the option to boot to Download, Recovery, Reboot, etc.
3) Honestly, I move between Phoenix, Supernova, and FireFly. Adam and Team have a level of detail I havent seen around, but the big part is the support. There is NO flaming on his threads, so people arent affraid to ask question if they cant figure something out. They are all solid ROM's very stable, very well put together. In the end I couldnt tell you one of them is better than the other, just a little bit different
it's a long way to go.my captive's screen is so cool.

[REQUEST] Mod for the first time

Hi, i have DHD and this is my first request!....after a OTA's upgrade on gingerbread, i downgrade my device with this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 and i've 2.2.
Now what i've to do? i need a rom stable and fast, simple and without many effects, but essential, that allows me to have a long battery usage. I would also increase the wifi reception of the DHD...
What do you recommend me to install and wich guides to follow?
Thanks but I'm really inexperienced!
The most common answer: Read the different ROM threads and try some.
But my advice to your requirements is to try mike1986's Gingerbread release.
Stable, Up2date, ready for daily use..
You will find the thread on your own ;-)
ok very thanks, but i'm a new by....and this world is too big and new for me!...i don't know what to looking for, and where....

[Q] which rom should I install on my SGS1 (Please help me)

Hi, I wanna install a new rom but I couldnt found what I exactly want.. please help me to decide
I want the rom to have:
-good battery life
-fast and has minor problems
-good features
features:
a lot unlock screen( minimum 5)
2G/3G
TW 4
applications and stuff from SGS 2
updated applications
3D Perfomance
based on android 2.3.3 or 2.3.4
single and wifi improved drivers& other drivers (if there is such thing like that..)
another cool useful stuff
EXT4
so I was thinking about Juwes/gingercriskelo/SH/CM7/miui/or maybe something else?
what is the best for me, for what im looking?
thanks guys
NOTE- I have read A LOT of thread so far but I still cant choose
NOTE- cant try and install every rom.. I want to install a rom and that's it- be with him a long time
Why don't you want to try some ROMs?

You have to try a lot of roms. I use insanity CM 014.
Lunchbox115 all my application will be deleted over and over when I change rom..
I dont want to mess with this things.. lol dont wanna destroy my phone
actually, I cant "find by myself" all the features even if I try this rom..
imidalv- yeah I've heard about cm7 but as I said- dont know which one should I choose
please help me guys
testing them yourself is the only way to find out. I want similar things to you, and have so far been through Insanity, Juwe, ezBase, and am currently trying Ginger Real. Ginger Real and Juwe both have plenty of features, but insist on theming them which really annoys me!
I use F1 SGS V3.0 (NON-WIPE).
This ROM is awesome.....
@darix: you could use Titanium Backup to save and later to restore your apps.

This guy posts an almost identical thread begging people to tell him what ROM to install every few weeks. They just end up being spammy flame wars until the mods delete them.
As often as you all try to tell him he needs to investigate for himself, he will continue begging someone to tell him what is best and what to do.

As often as you all try to tell him he needs to investigate for himself, he will continue begging someone to tell him what is best and what to do.

Personally I liked the criskelo roms for everything you want. You really do need to try the roms for yourself. I am now a miui convert, very fast and responsive but does have stuff missing compared to other roms.

If you are running stock ICS(which I'm sure you are) you should assume that you are affected by the bug.
Refrain from doing factory reset using the STOCK/CWM recovery as this will trigger the bug even on STOCK recovery. If you have CWM do not do a NANDROID RESTORE.
If you are rooted i suggest flashing a safe custom kernel, a good one that I can
recommend for solid battery life and balanced performance is Speedmod k3-3 just look for it on the development section.
If you don't like custom kernels and prefer stock just do not do the ones I've mentioned above. If you really need to do a factory reset do it on Gingerbread.
Regarding the battery life, there are many factors to consider. First thing that you need to check if your phone is going into deep sleep. Download cpuspy on play store and report back here so we can help you.
HOLY CRAPPPPPP
Well i have already done the FACTORY RESET 2 times but now its working fine so far
So what should i do now?????????????????????????
Also i would like to know if i can switch back to gingerbread os using Skies software?????????????????
You cant use Kies but Id recommend using ODIN because its faster and safer.
Check out dr.ketans guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997, the man is a genius.
His English isnt great, but essentially
Download ODIN
Download whichever stock rom you want (GB)
Set phone to download mode
Connect to Odin
and flash.
His instructions are a lot more detailed (maybe to much so). But if you do this, the dangerous kernel will be gone and youll be safe.
I know where you are coming from being fairly new to the android scene. Have been in it now for about six months and i would consider myself fairly literate. From what you were saying you updated your phone to the official ics version for your phone. Well... The first thing you need to do my friend is read, read, and read some more. Alot of what i know and have learned has been from researching these forums and the web. Rootgalaxynote.com is pretty good for noobs as it usually has videos showing you how to do things step by step but you should also read some of the faq's about rooting and flashing on this site. If i were in your shoes the first thing that i would do would be the following;
1.) root the device using Dr. Keetans method on this site. If you havent done this it wouuld be a good place to egt started. His method will not trigger your phones counter.
2.) I would revert the phone back to its earlier version which would be gingerbread. You can do this by looking in the stock gingerbread roms section under android development on this site. Our fellow senior members have made it fairly easy to find and after reading you should have a pretty good idea of what to do.
3.) Install a kernel that is safe for ics roms such as franco kernel or abyssnote kernel. This should be fairly easy for you to do just make sure you do tue steps exactly as they describe or else you will mess the phone up.
4.) After that you can pick out a custom ics rom which if you are looking for optimal battery consumption this would be the best way to go about it as official ics rom consumes a substantial amount more battery than the sleak, lean more refined custom roms out there. Just be carefull what you choose as some are full of bugs and features not working.
The main thing here is to cover alot of ground and do your homework. Research is key and you always want to stick with sites like xda and a few others. Xda may not be the most user friendly site out there but it contains a wealth of information and iw where the best of the best come together. Hope this helps my friend.

If you can still run it fine, then you're good. But from now on refrain from doing things on the recovery until you're on a safe kernel. Some users reported that they were able to do a factory reset to the nth time before encountering the brick. Meaning you can factory reset 999 times and get away with it and on the 1000th time, brick ur device seriously god knows when it will happen.
Just stay away from CWM or Stock recovery for now if you don't know what you're doing just to be safe.
P.S. ICS is nothing to be scared of if you know what you're doing. Do a little research about the hardbrick bug good place
to start reading about it is this POST
Well i completely agree with you mate and i need to do a lot of homework before i make any change. However since i am very new to the terminology used in ANDROID so would like to ask you if there is any website which can explain me a lil bit about these terminologies so that i know what everbody is talking about or is it that i should simply go through the forums and then join all the bits and pieces to get an idea about the terms used.
Also i would like to ask you that "ODIN" is it like another software which is used to flash the FIRMWARE

hmm. website... ? well you can start on this website http://developer.android.com/about/index.html and don't forget our ever loved website.. (XDA-DEV)...
Just by snooping, hanging around, munch and digest all you can and soon you'll be able to pick some neat tricks in learning android terminologies in no time at all.
ODIN (PC /Mobile) is a very neat indispensable tool for custom room makers and flashers... With this tool you can always at your disposal.. whilst jump from one custom rom to another, which ever your choice or liking. Changing ROMS is akin to Flashing.. so if you flash a ROM, you are changing your current ROM to whatever ROM you would like to have it installed on your phone.
Every custom ROM has its highlights and lowlights... pick what suits you best and your good to go after. Flashing ROMs with Gingerbread support (if your still in stock GB), assures you no brick at all... Now on the other hand, if your already in ICS(Stock) and would like to flash custom roms with iCS support.. then I do warn you to be wary of it. A lot of people have fallen and have been bitten by the hardbrick bug... Just always be extra careful in doing it.
Cheers bud!
First of all i really thank everyone for their help considering that i am a noob when it comes to android
2ndly i am alos getting an impression that Gingerbread is a better bet as of now till there is a permanent fix for the Bug and secondly i am getting an impression that GB was much better when it comes to the battery backup
Correct me if i am wrong
Alos a clarification
Stock rom means the firmware from SAMSUNG?Am i correct?
Custom rom means that it has been tweaked to avoid any known issues?Am i correct?
Also if i change from custom to stock riom does that hamper the warrenty or not?

Yes! Flash it back to Stock Rom and unroot it. You should be good to go.
You should not worry too much about the bricking bug. If you stay on stock rom and your phone gets bricked you are covered by the warranty. It is not your fault that the phone has that problem.
I also recommend that you ask some friend that has experience to help if you want to flash/root/install custom rom, given that you have little experience with android.
i have just checked in and found this link "Root Your Phone"
This means he is going back to a particular version
Right?

Dilpreet,
U remind me of myself 2 years back when I was equally inquisitive, enthusiastic but lacking knowledge...
First of all... There is no problem whatsoever if you remain on stock(yes u r right official) Samsung ics provided you don't do factory reset ahead.
2. U need to familiarize yourself with android terminology such as rooting, flashing custom (yes again u r right tweaked) roms, recovery mode, download mode, full wipe, Odin, directly/not directly root able roms etc etc... I am not trying to psyche you out but just giving a word of caution. Unless you know all of these terminologies well (you will get lot of reading on xda on each of this) , PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING. By anything I mean even reverting to GB. U must have updated from GB to iCS OTA (over the air) that is on device itself but this rversal won't be easy unless u fully know what u r doing... so first familiarize urself and then get into it.
3. As regards battery life on stock ics , you can use app named juice defender (available on play store) it has lot of options for battery saving. Besides check if GPS and wifi options are not switched on when not in use... some apps are battery hoggers. Check battery usage under settings ---- battery to see how its doing.
4. There are few safe ics kernels available like what has been told u before by some people in this thread... I would strongly suggest Cm9 or any cm9 based rom like asylum (btw Cm stands for cyanogenmod ) which are smooth and safe & yes extremely battery efficient too.
5. Lastly, I will pm you one apk file which will help you know whether your phone has a brick bug or not... do uninstall that application after you check it. For installing any external app (apk file) you need to go in settings ---- security --- and tick unknown sources
PS: Do click Thanks if I have been of any help mate

Nopes... rooting is gaining administrator rights over your phone. In simple terms , being able to access system folder on your phone... Beware, rooting voids warranty.. Please refer Dr. ketan's guide on rooting note on other thread... That's best

Thanks for the info mate
And i have already checked the article which helps you to check if your handset is affected or not and what i could understand was that we just have to install the application and then run the application and will generate a result
But what after that?
I mean how ill i come to know which files to look for which will tell us if its affected or not
I am not aware as to which all files to look for
Please help me
It will throw up the result after checking.. u need not look for anything... it will tell u if ur phone is prone to brick bug.. check it urself. Have sent u the apk file already through pm (personal message).
This will just tell you if you are really prone to this bug, nothing beyond that. If you are then you have three options:
1. Stick to stock ics rom but don't do full wipe again
2. Revert to stock GB through Odin
3. Switch to safe ics kernel (and enjoy lovely ics experience without boring Samsung touchwiz)
For the last you will have to root your phone for remaining, rooting not required.
PS: Please press Thanks button if I have helped you anyway

just got the galaxy note now what ?

i have come from a htc hd2 so i like to change roms alot.
what should i do with the galaxy note ?
i would like ICS so what are the steps ?
any help please
Have a good search round this forum and make sure you understand clearly how everything works before you decide to start flashing, I came from the HTC Desire and the Galaxy Note is a whole different ball game. Enjoy you new Galaxy Note
is the official ics update any good ?
what does rooting do ?
I personally didn't like the official ICS update, that is when I decided to flash a custom ROM.
Rooting gives you more control over your phone, lets you install apps like "Titanium Backup" that require root permissions to run.
i have the la6 kernel

Apparently this really depends on your location. For example the one Samsung released here (France, 4 months after being announced, too) was so broken it bricked a number of terminals and was subsequently withdrawn. With no word of when a fix will come.
Apparently other areas had working systems. One would think it would just be a matter of strings to translate and a few apps to package, so it's all very puzzling to someone who isn't familiar with Android (I've been intimately familiar with Linux for more than 20 years, and Unix before that, but I still don't get it).
And then, as you'll see by browsing the forums, many people seem to have issues with ICS. Issues that (IMO) just don't seem to make much sense in a system that would have been tested for a couple days by an intern somewhere...
OTOH, many people apparently have no issues.
So as with everything on the network, I suppose YMMV, take it with a grain of salt, yada yada... void where applicable.
See if anything is reported about your proposed (if any) update. Then decide if it's worth it (maybe it is).

Same as on any other terminal ? Lets you access functions that are typically "off limits". Among the most useful ones, you can now read/write anywhere. Which means you can allow/deny anything for any application. And notably block all those silly annoying bundled apps so they won't want to update any more, or, if you like, even start (a process known as freezing).
Have a look at the videos in my signature once..
For Rom official one is good but custom ones are great..
All roms are unique in their own way...the ones that stand out as totally awesome are Paranoid Android and TMT Hybrid IMUI...
Its your choice...

1. probably, but make sure in paranoid thread,
2. I assume you have done cwm backup, which will be rather useless when switching ROMs, having tb (i.e.Titanium Backup) backup you can generally restore your apps and data between roms (except for the system ones)

And that was the right thing to have for the time being, too bad you hurried on to ICS. In my opinion, when you have a new phone, you have to know it, enjoy it, love it ( ? ), installed a couple of hundred apps, and then, after being more than familiar whith it, it would be time to upgrade it, tweak it, etc., so the change could be apreciatte. It's like eating always the desert at first, withouth eating the soup and the salad.
As for rooting, if you had to ask, you probably did't need to root, but since that's already done, I'll give you a hint. There is one VERY interesting thing about rooting which anyone would find usefull. The posibility of using a Firewall. In this way, you could not only block those annoying ads (and save a little battery since the ads have to download from Internet). You can also protect your device from troyan / spy applications, which are increasingly expanding in android. For example, a simple sound board app, or a screen saver, ¿why should it use your internet connection? ¿To what ends?
Enjoy the Note, it's a hell of a phone.
