[Q] How to Root without changing anything? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all.
I'd like to root my galaxy note to remove bloatware as well as to install root only apps. How do i do that while keeping my stock ROM? Is there a way to root without having to install a different ROM?
Appreciate anyone's help with this.

depends on what stock rom version you are running

Thank you for your reply.
Would this picture help identifying which ROM I'm using?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
scroll down until you hit: I have Kernel KK1/KK2/KK3/KK4/KK5 - Download This - and Extract that's for root+cwm.
if you only want root, then use zergrush method
Inspired from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1319653

it's all on that thread, first post.

Thank you so much!
Before doing this i have some noob questions please.
Will i be able to unroot in a later date while still keeping the same stock ROM? Also, does unrooting puts the phone back under warranty or once rooted the warranty is voided permanently?

You can regain warranty by putting back Stock ROM anytime (you have to just flash Stock ROM with PC Odin)

Great! I just finished rooting. How can i save my stock ROM to flash it back in need? Or is it available somewhere and i just need to download it? I'm asking because i checked the thread with the stock ROMs and the one for my country isn't included there. Maybe if i know how o can help the community by posting it in that thread? Thank you!

reboot into cwm recovery, and do a nandroid backup. Dr. Ketan's thread says it all, really

Checked Dr. Ketan's thread. it has great info and a lot of helpful things but I couldn't find how to backup the complete phone to regain warranty by restoring when needed. maybe I overlooked it?
does a nandroid backup saves the kernel and modem and everything? or just the ROM?
sorry, noob here, who knows, maybe one day i'll be developing and adding some value to this community
Thank you guys for the help! very much appreciated!

Not quite, as most flash methods would increase the binary counter.
Re-flashing a stock kernel would only get rid of the yellow triangle.
There are ways to reset the binary counter, but he would need to make sure that his binary is at 0 (NO) to be 100% sure he will get warranty service

My answer was in reply to warranty back for rooted device, not raised counter.
N correct first line not most of method raise count. It is-
Any custom rom/kernel if flashed with pc odin that only raise counter.

To get warranty just flash back to a stock ROM it.wont raise the flashing count because it's an official rom

question is: how do i get back my stock ROM as i don't see it in the stock ROMs thread. I'm located in Morocco and using Meditel Galaxy Note. That's why i asked about how i can make a full backup of my ROM, kernel, baseband and everything to flash them when i need to regain warranty services.
Thank you guys!

try check fus Downloader
it has most of the KIES firmware available.
using it mainly since my first Galaxy S when i'm too lazy to hunt for custom roms and want to stay able to update with KIES

You can do it after getting root only, get root + CWM
Then with cwm you can backup.

My apologies- I just wanted to point that out.
Furthermore, of course flashing a stock kernel would not raise the counter and get rid of the yellow triangle, but if they hypothetically checked the binary counter and it was not at NO, then they could refuse warranty coverage for service AFAIK. Re-flashing a stock kernel will not reset the binary counter if it is above 0

I am not disagree, you are right. raised counter will not solved by flashing stock rom. That needs jig i know.
But i want to convey that your reply to my quote was misleading.
Actually someone have asked me, does unrooting can regain waranty? Or rooting voids my warranty permanently?
For that i said just reflashing stock rom will unroot n warranty will b regained.
That case there was not a question of raised counter.
Regards.

Rooting will stop official updates?

This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find a proper answer on XDA forums. So here it is:
Will you still be able to download and install official updates in your Note without a hitch even if you've rooted it?
Is voiding the warranty the only problem with rooting?

yes to your questions. getting it OTA is another matter especially if you installed a custom rom.
and of course, you risk bricking your device once you tinker with it. but if you follow the instructions, especially Dr. Ketan's guide, your chances of success goes up dramatically.
That's a relief. If I don't install a custom rom I'll be able to upgrade OTA, right?
And where can I find this Dr Ketan's guide?

Of course you will get OTA / Kies update after Root, but again bad part is that, you will lose Root after OTA/Kies. So If you want to keep your Root intact, you should not update it with OTA/Kies but you can just use as Notice, when you get notice about new update, find it over XDA (this thread is for stock ROMs) n update it using Mobile Odin/ CWM
Chasmodo have shown you exact thread for rooting guide in detail, here ofline guide i have made too, download it from last link on my signature.

So, in case of the OTA update a rooted device will get "unrooted", right? Will that leave the phone in the same state as it would have been in if the rooting never happened, i.e. if you were just doing the OTA updates only all along?..
Yes it will lead to state of unrooted, M not sure but it may leave superuser application icon on drawer(non functioning). If it remains you have to Flash ROM with PC Odin to get rid of this.

I think yes, only not sure about the "flash counter" that I've heard on these forums. It may be an indicator of you voiding your warranty.
EDIT: got my self interested, did a quick search and found more info on this thread. After doing the update and going into download mode you should be able to see if your flash counter is alright

I think some OTA updates leave the rooting intact and one has to specifically "unroot".

Thanks. So I guess things will be the same if one flashes back the original ROM and resets the binary flash counter. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Flash counter raise when you flash custom rom with pc Odin.
Reflash stick rom won't reset it, u need 'jig' to reset it.
Ics support a sw which reset counter without jig.

Ahh no wonder... I am on N7000OZSKK1 and was notified about a 70~mb update both OTA and via Kies to N7000OZSLA2 but no matter what I did it would cause an error during updating. I guess I'll just wait for a "rootable" update (and plus I can't seem to find a changelog either...)

Hey man, I couldn't recommend this toolkit more: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979290
It does EVERYTHING, and the things that it doesn't do itself, it steps you through step by step.
I used to to root, install CWM recovery and Pandoriam rom when I bought my i9305 6 months ago. And 1 month I used to it to return my phone back to 100% factory stock, including triangle away. Samsung ended up replacing my phone due to a faulty headphone jack, but they were none the wiser regarding software mods.
You really can't go wrong with it my friend.

[GUIDE][ SCH-I705 ] Back to Stock - Relock, Unroot

Return your SCH-I705 back to factory stock (minus flash counter)
Flash these in ODIN 3.04
DO NOT CHECK RE-PARTITION, FLASH LOCK, OR LED CONTROL
ALL ANDROID VERSIONS ARE 4.1.2
VRBLL2
I705VRBLL2_I705VZWBLL2_VZW.zip
VRBMI1
I705VRBMI1_I705VZWBMI1_VZW.zip
Unfortunatley, I don't know of a way to reset the flash counter. Triangle Away may do it, and the manual method for resetting it on the Galaxy S3 may do it, but I've not confirmed nor do I want to try.
Don't forget to hit the thanks button!
I might want this one.
Is there a known way to go back to the rooted unlocked tab?
Yep. Just flash one of the stock rooted Odin system images in the root unlock recovery thread, then flash the aboot (bootloader)
Basically following the instructions like you would if you just bought the tablet.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using XDA Premium HD app
Triangle Away shows the correct flash counter on my tablet, so I'm going to assume it works, but no proof. I've sent chainfire a PM asking a couple questions and hopefully we'll have an answer

[Q] How to safely root/unlock my phone? (read inside)

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone could bare with me and help me out with my little issue.
THE ISSUE:
I bought a locked (Vodafone) I9305 for my girlfriend, in hopes that I could then SIM-unlock it as easily as I did with my Galaxy S2;
I understand I need to root my phone before I do that, so...
THE QUESTION:
How do I backup my phone before rooting it, so that I can return it to the exact state it came out of the box?
Also, what's the safest method for rooting it?
And before you guys tell me, I did use the search function, but it only came up with some generic tutorials that don't really go into what I want to do.
Any help would be really appreciated!

As for rooting (im not sure), i think if u flash supersu.zip from supersu thread on stock recovery u will get root

Try CF-Auto root for rooting (using odin) from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959605,
easier and simplest way to root.
After rooting, just do a factory reset and your phone status will stay Normal/Official instead of Modified.
Please note that this is just root and no custom recovery is included
to get back to stock, use Odin too as the C4SCA mentioned above
there are multiple guides on rooting, backing up, and unlocking.

Wait, what? Since when does doing a factory reset on an Android phone takes it back to the original firmware? I've had an HTC One X, and a custom firmware on it, and everytime I do a factory reset, it just deletes the files, it doesn't change the software at all. Am I missing something here? Is it different with the Galaxy S3 I9305?
Ok so, sorry for double posting, but I think I'm getting somewhere.
Since I only need root to unlock the phone, once I do root it (I figure I can use this guide?), I should FIRST unlock it and THEN reset the flash counter? And then, in case I need to return the phone back, I'll reset it to factory state (unrooted and locked)...how?
Just need help with this last question please!

Dude, I never said it will change the firmware, it will change the system status under settings --> About phone --> Status to Normal from Modified
This enables to get OTA updates even if the phone is rooted
To answer your last question, you just need to flash the stock firmware ( which is currently on your phone) again using odin

Type *#1234# and write down what you seen in screen. Inorder to claim the warranty you must need that to return to the exact stock Rom which your phone was shipped with. Also take precautions before you start flashing. Take backup of efs and persist. Once you lost these files you can't get them back.
Always be prepared to face an unexpected brick/bootloop/freeze/random reboots etc. Get ready with all the informations to overcome these situations. Happy flashing..
Edit : Flashing stock Rom will overwrite all the previous custom installations. And revert to the stock. Don't worry. There will be stock recovery.

Hey, once again I have a question. I want to be fully prepared, so i found a tutorial as illustrated as possible, and I would like to ask if it's a good one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776095
Also, is the stockification process the same, but with stock ROM package, or is something different?

It;s a brilliant tutorial. Explained there is a method installing CWM, Rooting and Deodexing of untouched stock ROM users.
You can use the same method as explained in CWM installation using Odin to revert back to stock. Only one difference, instead of that recovery image you have to select the stock ROM image.
Give a Big thanks to Broodplank1337 for such a wonderful tutorial.:good:
Thanks for all the support man ^^
In the tutorial i see CWM v5.5.0.4, and you have 6.0.1.3, and on one thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843825) I've seen that there is 6.0.2.6 already, but they're .zip, not .tar. I should flash 5.5.0.4 with Odin first and then install new CWM .zip through CWM, am I right? And when i'm revering to stock, do i have to download the right firmare, or can i just backup my own? Or if I backup it with CWM will it lose the stock recovery?
And also, I can't find any /efs /persist backup tutorial :C Sorry for all your time taken, but perhaps you have any link? Thanks again
Recovery
Well when i need waranty i just need to restore the rom but what about recovery ? can i leave it on CWM 6

Yes you can install CWM 5.5.0.4. If you are looking for a newer version, you can use Alireza7991's CWM 6.0.3.2(thanks to him). you can find both .tar and .zip files there.
When reverting to stock, you have to download any stock. If it's for warranty purposes, you need to download the one for your region.
In order to flash the stock rom, you have to use odin, not CWM.
Here is how you can backup your /efs and /persist
Good luck.

As i said before, when you flash the stock, all your previous customizations will also lost. After that there will be only stock recovery.
Thanks again for all the answers, still got one question - when is the possibility of losing efs or persist? During rom flash or CWM flash? Can i flash the CWM without the risk of losing esf?

Risks will be there all the time. No one can assure you that any step or method is 100% fool proof. That's why all the developers in here underlying that "Try it your own"., they take no responsibility of any damages.
I can only assure you one thing. If you are in any trouble, the awesome Devs in here will do their best to sort it out.

Thanks
I mean, when comes the risk of losing these partitions (even after successfull flashing), after flashing CWM or after flashing rom? I'm asking that because i have to root the phone to backup them, and the easiest way to root is to install the .zip through CWM

It can't be sure but possibilities are less. Usually it happens when we mess with it.
