[Preview] Samsung Official ICS for Tab - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

At the Mobile World Congress 2012, Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 running Ice Cream Sandwich. GSMArena.com got their hands on a demonstrator and produced the Youtube video below showing it off. I think we can expect the ICS release for the 8.9 to look about the same. What do you think about it?

Early GT8.9 videos also showed phone app (and a sdcard slot), so this doesn't mean anything.

Yes, including voice in ICS is not a problem. I think we just need a baseband that includes voice capability. If anyone is brave enough to try and flash GT7.7 or GT7.0Plus modem.img then we could maybe make it work. Unfortunately trying this could brick the radio or worse. I have thought about trying this, but i just don't want to brick my device...

1. Auto-rotate was off, so we couldn't see the rotation animation which is sometimes a bit choppy in 3.x.
2. Portrait mode wasn't shown (which is slower for the 10.1 in 3.x compared to landscape).
I wonder if ICS really brings us these magic software hacks that make the Tegra2 limitations go away...

Skype video from Thunderbolt on Atrix (request)

Thunderbolt's version of Skype WITH VIDEO is now available.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/04/11/download-skype-with-video-on-android/
It won't directly install for some reason (some how locked to the Thunderbolt?)
Would be real nice on the Atrix. Wish I could help more, but I'm just a dummy.
Thank you all very much. I bow to all your great feats.

i took a quick look... it appears that it would not be an easy & quick fix / rebuild i dont think, the entire program is written to use and be depended on <uses-library android:name="com.htc.device" />... before taking on this project id wait out as skype said that att was suppose to get releases of its video call first so id think we cant be to far behind
For anyone interested, here is the deodexed apk decoded and built with apk-tool.

it doesn't work because it was not made for this phone. even if it did install, it wouldn't work with our camera because moto uses its own camera driver since froyo doesn't have one (gingerbread will). htc uses its own FFC driver as well.

Because they contain drivers for all the phones they know of with FFCs I would bet.
Could it be that because att doesn't have 4g yet, Skype is holding out?

Probably right. Here is Motorola's API:
http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/library/motorola-front-facing-camera-api/
It is so frustrating that using the same system (android) and also having a front camera but we cannot use the same app (skype with video).
yup but that was specifically develpoed for the thunderbolt, I assume if it does get officially launched with it, it will be a matter of time before that spreads to being on other devices (much like when they launched skype in the first place on android) the key question is will they fix the sound issues that moto's config gives these voip programs.

as I learned in the (otherwise useless) motorola atrix dev conference, the FFC driver for the atrix is written BY motorola. Android 2.2 does NOT have a standard FFC driver and so every phone that has an FFC and is running 2.1 or 2.2 is using their own FFC driver. That is why Tango and Qik did not work for the Atrix immediately when it was released, and Qik had to release an Atrix-only version of the app.
When gingerbread comes across all devices, it will have a standard FFC driver. But until then, every company running 2.2 uses their own and that is why these aren't compatible apps.

More than likely, it's because AT&T didn't want Skype to release it yet.. the carriers have a surprising amount of influence on app developers. Think of how the Inspire and Atrix still don't have HSUPA enabled whereas the iPhone 4 has had it since its release. My guess is they don't want to overload their already fragile network

ALL Galaxy Tab 8.9 Questions Go Here

Until we Get a Forum for the 8.9 can you use this Thread
Thanks Guys
A
Thanks! We'll call it a temporary home. Now we need some dev's who can get CWM working and start cranking out some ROMs!
1st question !
Just bought a French HSDPA 8.9", locked on Orange network
Is there a chance to unlock it, using SGS or SGS2 tools available on Android Market ?
File structure is the same, network lock is probably stored in nv_data.bin (like SGS)
Does anyone know if we can use the 10.1 roms?

If we had CWM, I'd probably be willing to just give it a try!
what is required to get the new forum opened for the 8.9? A willing Mod? A certain number of committed devs? Enough user requests (is where do we send them)?
what android version is on your 8.9? Reviews say it comes with 3.2 preloaded but mine has 3.1 and when i check for updates it says there are none.

Would you believe that source instead of this one from Samsung? Read around the middle of the page (Google Maps pic).
Anyways I'd love a forum for this tablet I bought on the 7th. It is magnificent and pretty speedy (and even more so when you turn off all animations and delete useless Samsung widgets). Although I am waiting for Samfirmware.com to get the American source (they only have the Asian one for the 7310 which has a different versioning scheme) so I am able to ODIN safely.

I have upgraded to Overcome 2.1.0 with 3.2 firmware and actually I have the "Phone" app which seems to work. I didnt tried to call because of my contract with the TIM brand, I can only navigate. Promise I will try this afternoon!

Use the SIM card from your phone when you do try later! If this works, then this is fantastic news!
I saw it pop up too but when you try to call out it errors out with a 'voice calling not supported' message.
I wonder how to get past that. Do we need a different radio rom or something.. ?
It would be awesome to get this working.

Other than pre-release press shots, no one has shown a Tab 8.9 or 10.1 with working GSM calling capability. Chances are if it's ever going to be made to happen it will be by a developer who is probably a member of XDA and s/he will post either screen shots or video. Until then, it's safe to assume that no Tab other than the 7, 7+, and 7.7 will ever be able to make GSM calls. There's hope that ICS may change that but for now it is what it is. And unless someone does post proof that it's been made to happen take anything said with a grain of salt.
Amen, lets make this a sticky.

If ANYONE claims they have working GSM calling capabilities on their 8.9/10.1, be prepared to present hard proof, or keep your silence!

Hey ppl... well.. i just got my p7300 today and was more then embarassed tp find ou that it has no call functionality whatsoever after i torn the packaging apart at the shop. I just got a bit suspicious after i came home and my girlfriend told me that she could not reach me.
Long story short, i thought that i pass by @ xda to check the devs. Now ive seen that even around here nobody managed to get theor heads around it. Now that i have to use my old x10i i thought that it maybe is possible to somehow use the x10 as modem while using the p7300 as dialler.. maybe via bluetooth or sumthin like that>?!
Dont know if that would be usefull enough for others that a dev puts his head into it or if ot would not be way to complicated but thats on you to decide as i am no [email protected]

[Q] Cyanogen on Droid 3?

I apologize in advance for asking a question that has no doubt been asked on here before and posted but I cant find my answer. I just recently came to Motorolla from HTC because I needed to switch to Verizon for work and the D3 was perfect. After looking around on here and on the CM site Im still very confused...Is there a CM download (preferably CM7.1) for the D3 or are people just trying to make something work on it. Im not even rooted yet because if I cant get CM Im not sure I even want to. If anyone can answer this for me and direct me to a download it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all and I apologize again for asking a dumb question.
Yes Hashcode has a cm7 download in the Droid 3 developers forum....it's still got a few minor bugs but overall it's awesome I've been running it for quite sometime now...I don't have a link but look in the dev forum...good luck.

It, most certainly, is good enough to be used as a daily driver. I have been using it since he was able to work out the audio bugs. Around 11/15. It does take some setting up, but well worth it. Just read the thread and Hash's blogspot, you should find everything you need there. Good Luck!

Both SD cards are working in both CM7 and CM9. It's their naming convention that throws people off:
/emmc is the internal emmc storage area (called "/sdcard" in the stock ROM)
/sdcard is the actual sdcard (it's called "/sdcard-ext" in the stock ROM)
And actually the camera will work. The hardware camera does not, but there are a couple software cameras from the market that will. I use camera zoom fx. With very little problems. If you're like me and the camera isn't that big of a deal, these soft cams will work good enough.

What do you mean the hardware camera doesn't work and software camera does?
For any camera soft to work the hardware has to be working...
Do you mean, you can't take pictures with the inbuilt camera app, and can take pics with camera zoom fx?
If so, then the camera works, just the default app does not...
Is this what you mean? If so, then great... If not, what're you sayin'?

Either you had bad upgrade or you hardware is slightly different than my u9000-81 Sorry.
I grabbed my Huawei U9000 and flashed to Taiwanese Sharp ROM.
Seems to be running smoothly except the speakerphone is strangely soft and blur in a phone call. It works loud and clear in YouTube/video playback.
Also, I find the touch screen a bit funny as it may not response to anything at random... then I switch off the screen and turn back again, everything's back to normal.
Could this be a hardware issue or a software/driver one?
Second bug is that the camera does not save saturation/sharpness/contrast settings.
Also, apart from the Taiwanese Sharp ROM, any modded ROM can make use of HDMI connection?
I've made this on YouTube, hope you guys enjoy it.

I had the same experience thats why i used Volume+ to increase dB
Dont set to full extend +12dB is like the limit. Going over would make no changes or may also result to distorted audio.
since we're on the same topic of 2.3 ROMs with camera and HDMI.. id like to ask, which rom has HDMI and can be overclocked?
As far as I have found so far, overclocking is kernel dependant. And so is HDMI.. that means I can't have a kernel that allows overclocking and has HDMI function right?
