[Q] OTA for rooted phone - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I have the Czech version - KK5 firmware.
Today, on my phone I got a notification saying there's an update (about 70mb).
I downloaded it and tried to install it but when it rebooted, it said it was unsuccessful and that I should try with Kies again on PC companioin.
Now, is this because I rooted my phone? I currently have the original firmware rooted with CWM.
And I don't want to lose the root.
So should I go ahead and connect it to the computer and go through Kies?
Is there any other reason for my OTA update not working?
Thanks!

You can flash firmware with CWM and MobileOdinPro and keep root and CWM, read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784.
Download your firmware from Sammobile.com, unzip it and place it on your external sd-card and flash it.
You can not update officially through Kies/Fota when you have custom rom/kernel or root privileges afaik

Or just grab the stock Czech one from this thread (or any other stock, it ll be fine)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997

I have the stock czech that's on the site, but the new update came out today so i don't see the update in that link
can I just update to any other latest stock firmwares there?

Yes you can, I jumped between different stocks, from different countries (my main is United Arab Emirates), used Turkish and German with no issues so dont worry, just use Mobile Odin Pro (with everroot on) or CWM to retain the root , refer to the the previously posted link by Myamo for the CWM method (i would recommend mobile odin pro though, much easier and lazier well worth the money ^^)

[Q] Rooted on KK9 - Can I safely OTA to KL7?

I apologize in advance if this has already been asked and answered, but I did search and couldn't find a definitive answer.
I have a "German" Note which came with 2.3.5 initially, I did one OTA update (to KK9) and it appears that luckily for me, I was still able to use the ZergRush exploit and root it and get the custom CWM, etc.
Now as I sit on KK9, I see that there is another OTA update available to me (KL7?) that clocks in at about 71MB.
With root, custom CWM, and CF-Root 5.0 at the moment, I don't want to lose that in an update.
So, is it safe to OTA or should I download something else and flash it via CWM? If so, what should I download and how should I flash it?
Thanks! Just don't want to brick or loose root.

You can "safely" update: that is, some users have reported no problems but I've already read issues with backup managers not being able to unfreeze apps, boot loops, and keyboard/random apps crashing when you try to open them.
KL7 is a stunning update (my battery now lasts forever). I'm going to root later in the summer once everything becomes stable.

After update, you cant root it with zergrush exploit as previous. Better you download full rom, install mobile odin pro, n flash it with 'ever root' option. So will get root during flashing
Thank you!
How can I confirm that the update being offered via OTA from KK9 is indeed KL7? Is that the most appropriate and current update path to follow? I know there are many different builds for potentially different devices, and I just want to make sure I am on the right path, and am merely assuming at this point that KL7 is the next step for my Note.
Thanks again, your advice makes much sense, and with already being Root and having Mobile Odin Pro, this seems like a much more intelligent approach. I want my device to be rooted, but rock stock and absolutely stable otherwise.
Regards,
-Rob
I can only say 71MB is almost exactly what I remember the KL7 update being. Other than that, I don't know how you can check (alternatively, you could download the update from XDA, apply it, then check for OTAs to see whether or not it was KL7).

So, what if you have CWM installed? Can I use Mobile Odin still? Or will this get rid of my CMW recovery and/or screw something else up?
if you use cwm still u can flash it to kl7, but again same, u cant root it. So using mobile odin pro, u can root kl7 during flashing by selecting 'eve root' n again u can cf root n get cwm for kl7 as you did it b4
Edit : yes with installed cwm still can use mobile odin, n remember u need pro version of mobile odin

Got the pro version. Thanks!
So just to make sure, coming from Stock KK9, rooted + with CWM:
Flash KL7 w/ ever root option Odin Pro
Re-install KL7 version of CWM.
Should all be set?
This is non-wipe too right? So everything should remain in tact?
Exactly, and when v dont select re partition box, it shud remain intact.(here also v dont selecting) But always keep backup b4 these kind of stuff.
Edit: I was able to get my phone flashed and updated to KL8. The process I used I descibed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21153439#post21153439
Ok, I'm using Mobile Odin Pro to try to flash to KL7 from KK5. I have root + CWM in KK5, use Mobile Odin according to the instructions to flash KL7...but I always get stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen. No matter how long I leave it, it will stay that way. To recover, I have to use Odin on PC to reflash KK5 and then reroot. Any suggestions on what else to try?
I couldn't get flashing with Mobile Odin to work correctly. I ended up getting the update to work by using CWM to flash the KL8 firmware, while pre-rooting. I then had to fix the keyboard issue by flashing the CSC, as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997.
Once I did that, I installed CMW Manager again using the method found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360. With the firmware updated and the radio working (phone wouldn't work in KL7) I just restored everything from a Titanium Backup file and it's all working.

[Q] zergrush root with custom rom, want to unroot to stock

I run through the zergrush rooting process and later installed Checkrom v5, with no problems at all.
Now I want to revert back to stock rom + unroot so I can use Samsung Kies to download new offical firmwares when they are released.
I downloaded N7000XBKK4_N7000OXXKK5_NEE (offical firmware for europe) and installed it though Odin. The phone boots and everything looks ok. The problem is that I'm not sure I've completely unrooted. An app called "Root Checker" said I was not rooted, but Samsung Kies still doesn't want to recognize my device.
I'm afraid to run the zergrush root and unroot again, since this is kinda new to me still.
Could anyone give me some pointers to get my phone to a complete stock state with no root?
Thanks alot in advance!
Option 1. Disable USB Debugging mode
Option 2. flash still Old Stock firmware using PC Odin
Option 3. Update Kies and USB Drivers
Option 4. Try different PC.
Thanks for the reply Ranjan.
I disabled USB Debugging mode, and now Kies can find my device, but it says my phone can't be upgraded through Kies. Any ideas?
I useually got this message when I had custom ROMs installed, but as I stated in my first post, I've flashed back to stock rom for Europe region (I live in Norway).
this could be due to your CSC. My guess is you are not on the same ROM version for your region. May be you should check for a more specific rom?
try this
N7000XXLA6---------2.3.6-------2012 February-------N7000XEULA1--------------Europe
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
I will give it a go anilisanil. Thanks for the reply
I updated to your suggested ROM, but kies now says "unit does not support software upgrades through kies", rough translated from norwegian.
Any more ideas?
So far u have latest update. so it ll say like that. anyway if your detects your phone then everything is OK.
Thanks Guess I'll just have to watch and see what happens when they roll out the new ICS update sometime soon
Thanks for all the help!

Help on upgrading to ics firmware

i have a unit with UBKK1 baseband version, which i learned was a brazilian rom. Now i currently live in the Philippines and i cant get an ICS update thru kies here because of the rom. i went to the samfirmware site and found a Philippine rom, my question is can i flash this rom over the old GB brazilian rom using odin without any problems? my phone is currently unrooted thru the one click method, it was previously rooted thru the same method.
Ive also read you can change the country code, if i change it to the Philippine code and update thru kies will it work??
if you change the csc then yes you should be able to upgrade with kies tho i always download the rom i want then use pc odin its just a personal preference
Why don't you download Stock ICS ROM directly.... And flash it using pc odin??
can i download any stock ICS rom and just flash it with odin without any problems?
Yes you can.
Ive just now rooted my note on brazilian rom (stock GB rom), if i upgrade to the taiwanese rom using pc odin will i still retain root? and do i need to uncheck the usb debugging before proceeding with pc odin?
No you wont keep root.
Yes uncheck usb debugging.

if you want to flash phone in odin then phone should be in download mode, usb debugging is not matter, and you can root your phone again after flash, vie cf root make search at xda you will found that.

I would buy Mobile Odin Pro from the market, and flash this rom from here http://www.hotfile.com/dl/156659405/b6c3080/N7000DXLP9_N7000OLBLP6_XTC.zip.html . This will flash the correct rom and keep root.
thanks for all the helpful replies, i was able to successfully flash taiwanese ics firmware update using pc odin. and you guys are right, i did lose root. now the only problem is how to go back on root as i've frozen a lot of apps on titanium backup before and those apps aren't showing after the update. it seems like flashing over to a newer firmware didnt reset the phone. all my previously installed apps are still there.
Guys, after updating to ics, i couldn't install apks using astro file manager or even the stock file manager.Pressing the install button won't work. Previously on gb stock rom everything works. Is this an ics bug?

Rare firmwares ? Other questions too...

Hi
First of all, I come from the Archos world so Samsung is a bit strange for me.
I live in Morocco and I run an old firmware. It is rooted with zergrush and has got CWM and mobile odin. My GN is now on KK2/KK5/KK2 and it aqked me to do an update : LA1/LA4/LA1. I tried through FOTA but it failed in recovery (well at boot). My first questions are about this firmware : should I do it by kies or will it be the same? Does the update deletes root? (then could anyone tell me where to get the firmware to flash in ODIN) Does the update wipes data partition or resets Android (as in deletes settings accounts apps)?
Then I would like to get the ICS update as soon as it gets out. Does it require the update above? I tried to get info about it on Sammobile.com but I can't manage to find my product code in any of the firmwares (MAT - Rare?) but I see that there is another update for Morocco (product code FWD). Then same questipns as above : can I flash it through Odin directly?
Sorry for my bas English and for the noob questions as I'm not used to the large number of versions firmwares.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
The reason the update fails is probably because you're rooted and have CWM installed.
When you update through Odin you will lose root. The easiest way to update to an official rom is by flashing a pre-rooted firmware with Odin from the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
You can pick any rom you'd like. You can find the LA4 update there but you can also flash LC1 which is a newer version.
After you have succesfully flashed with Odin you have a rooted firmware but no CWM yet. To get CWM you need to download a separate package from the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18978158&postcount=1
Scroll down a bit to section "2. I Want ROOT + CWM" and download the appropriate package. If you chose to flash LA4 then get the package for LA4, if you flashed LC1 then get the package for LC1 etc.
Extract the package you downloaded and execute "already-rooted.bat" and CWM will be flashed.
After that you have an updated and rooted firmware with CWM recovery.
Thanks for your reply. So basically I just need to get back to a stock rooted and then reinstall CWM?
But then I will still have the issue when updating to ICS right?
Ps : I see the LC1 version but it says France. Will I be able to flash it? (then maybe also the ICS after because the France and Moroccan have the same version LPY or sonething)

Installing OTA-file

Hello,
I'm from the netherlands, and i am using the original 4.0.3 firmware (XEN). But since a few days there's on SamMobile a OTA file wit 4.0.4 firmware, and Samsung don't giving a update on KIES, and SamMobile don't having a ODIN file.
Is there someone who can tell me how to install a OTA file?
I have just the originale stock firmware 4.0.3 XEN and my phone is NOT rooted....
Just sorry if my english is not so good.
Gr, Marco
Dont think so, found anything on Google about that?
lol

Hey listen Marco,
there are no procedure to install an Over the Air *OTA update as the word itself... the update is being push by your carrier to your phone...wirelessly. No user intervention itself. As long as your data connection /3G/4G is ON, then this push notification is being sent to your phone for the firmware upgrade. You need to skip on that OTA update as there's nothing much you can do about that.
Now what you can do is first, SEARCH, READ & LEARN most of the posts here in XDA. There are tons and tons of stuffs here in XDA alone that would guide you on how to upgrade your phone to the latest ICS firmware.
And by the way.. Kies is a proprietary sync software by Samsung. Kies (Air) you said is the one on your phone which doesn't mean at all really. What you need to do is download the PC version of Kies, install it on your computer. Sync your phone after and your phone would be upgraded... that's all you need to do.
You mentioned about ODIN... PC Odin is not in any way a software made by Samsung. Again, if you do a Search here in XDA, there are some threads who will give you a link on where you can download the latest PC Odin for you vis-a-vis, to upgrade also your firmware to the latest ICS ROM.
Sammobile is a website where you can download the latest firmware for you to use later on with PC Odin (once it's already installed on your computer.)
So, Marc... Take one stride at a time bud... what you need to learn (before going to stuffs about upgrading and rooting) is to READ and READ and LEARN your way around... the 'Search' button at the top right on this site is an indispensable tool as well for you to look for words that you like to look for.
Hope you find and muster it all bud and Good luck!
