Bloatware apps safe to remove on the Droid 4 - Motorola Droid 4

Below are the apps that are safe to freeze on the Motorola Droid 4. Freezing apps hides them from your app drawer, prevents them from using system resources, and can help with battery life. You can freeze them using an app like Titanium Backup Pro (root required). Do not uninstall them as you will need all the system apps when you receive updates in the future. If you freeze others and have no problems, post them here and I'll add them to the list. Likewise if you've frozen any below and you have problems, also let me know and I will remove them from the list (although that shouldn't be the case.)
Blockbuster, GoToMeeting, Let's Golf, and Madden NFL can be uninstalled normally from the Applications menu in Settings.
***There are more apps that can be frozen safely (Calculator, Google Search, My Files, Device Setup, etc.) but I am leaving them off this list because either a.) they are basic apps that aren't really bloatware or b.) links to them are built into basic menus/widgets and clicking on them would cause force closes (i.e. Device Setup, News.) Also there may be items below which you may very well want to use...this list is simply what's safe to freeze, and not necessarily what you should freeze.***
READ THE LIST CAREFULLY as some apps have very similar names but should not be frozen (e.g. Yahoo Calendar Service and Yahoo Contacts can be frozen safely, but Yahoo Mail Authenticator cannot...and most of the "Social" apps can be frozen, but Social Location cannot.)

The "Social" apps are not required for Facebook. "Social Location" is required for location-based Smart Actions though so that one should be left alone.

redacted......as i was inaccurate....

Just a note - picked this up on another forum - if you freeze the Yahoo bloatware, you must rename the BlurContactsSync.apk to .bak. This fixes the contacts crashing issue.

Can you freeze the pre-installed "Smart Actions" ??

Well, I had a somewhat different experience.
I froze Smart Actions and wound up in an FC loop. Smart Actions FC'd, which locked down the UI... I responded to the FC, and before I could do anything else with the UI it FC'd again... grabbing the UI again...
Had to pseudo-battery-pull the phone (power-button plus down-volume) and the machine was never right again. I wound up having to fastboot reflash to get things back to normal.
YMMV. I hope my case was an exception.

Anyone now having trouble with Facebook contacts sync? My contact pictures are not updating. I unlinked the blur fb account, re added it. It synced all my fb contacts to the contact list but never dled any pictures. I left Facebook authenticator. In addition to most of the list, I also have swype, the blur launcher, and smart actions renamed to .bak

I had to download a app called photo unlocker (have to have root) to fix that problem. Just Google it and download it as its not in the market

to be more specific - if you freeze or rename yahoo authenticator (blur_yahoo.apk) you must also rename blurcontactssync.apk. i don't have the pay version of titanium so the way i debloat is to rename the .apks to .apk.old to prevent them from loading. works just as well, though maybe not quite as easy as freezing. ES file explorer is great for this.
now that i renamed the blurcontactssync.apk, i no longer get FC when i click a contact name like i did before - good find, forkedt!
also, it's ok to remove swype if you want. what's the point in having a touch keyboard when you have a real one? about the only time i use the on-screen keyboard is when i just want to simply reply "K" to a text. that's about it. everything else, the real keyboard comes out.

I'm adding my 5 cents.
I'm GSM user, so, I was care about deleting mostly all stuff from Vzw and other.
Here is the list of my /system/app/ folder with all applications what I saved. All others were deleted. (leak 215 based).

P.S. it's unix sort in the document - big letters sorting first, small - other.
You can delete all stuff that is out of list. :good:

Hi!
I'm successfully frozing the apps unuseful...
I come from old Backflip with cyangen, I would like to ask you if I can freeze also my Gallery, my Music and My Files, with also Motocast...
I would like to replace with something more classic, especially with gallery, something like 3d Gallery, direct to the folder with pics, and Camera pics...suggestion?
About music as well...do you have suggestion?
Thanks!

you can disable gallery (i did), but even if you have something else installed (i recommend QuickPic) if you click the picture you just took while in camera, it will tell you there's no gallery installed. no worries - just hit back and then go into quickpic.
i also disabled music and files because i use ES File Explorer, and Music Folder Player Free.
you can disable most motocast things, but not all of it.
FYI - what i'm mentioning here is for ICS, not GB.

I previously deleted NFL Mobile and Netflix from my system apps. Will this prevent me from installing future OTA updates? Can I copy the apk's from the play store back to system/app folder or will i have to fastboot and reflash firmware?

removing any stock apps, will cause installing updates to fail, best to flash xml recovery file, with rsd lite

[Droid] [Q] Deleted too many system files after root?

I recently rooted my Droid 1 with One Click and now have Super User access. From there I grabbed an Milestone Overclocking app to simplify speeding up the phone, (as I have mentioned in other threads I am completely out of my element with phones since they don't have a internal combustion engine) as well as Root Exlorer from the market. Then I went into the world of deleting .apk files that I had read here that were unnecessary and completely safe to remove. Along with those I also got rid of, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Amazon MP3. Since this I have not been able to get past "Getting Driving Directions" on my Navigation. I have checked with others I work with and they had some issues as well with Navigation over the past week. Both Droid 1 and 2 users reported the same issues of screen stall to me. As of Friday one of the users of Droid 2 let me know that his Nav was once again working properly, mine is still not. Did I overdo it on deleting and get rid of something that is causing this problem? My Maps still give proper directions from my location, (no matter where I am at the time of testing) but once going into Nav, stalls. If I did get rid of too many how can I get those files back to my phone so everything works again as desired? I am now left with the following .apk files (.odex files as well):

Alright, I will leave you all alone and continue being a gearhead, drinker and general knuckle-dragger until more questions of me are asked or answers are available, thank you all again for all of your help!
hmm....i delete over 100 apps from delfy but if you delete all of it you will lost may fuctions
You wiped too much. Some apps are both app (as per UI for user) as data providers for certain functionality. You can tell that by looking in Manifest but you have to have enough knowledge to judge. Rule of tumb is to always move stuff off-side (i.e. to SD card folder) and not removing directly as you got no way back in case of failure, especially sometimes you may find out something does not work far too late. I wiped crap like GMail or Navigation and other 3rd party useless apps but I'd suggest to stay away from removing apps that may offer ecosystem functionality. Potential savings (like 200KB) vs time wasted on restoration is simply not worth for most cases.
Corp Cal - Corporate Calendar. Requires Exchange server. Probably safe to remove but again - do you *really* needs that to be removed?
Thank you for the info. Where would I be able to find all the original system apps so that I can add them all back and delete more carefully next time?

deleted a lot of things =p

I was new to the deleting of bloatware and when I got root I would see that people were saying which was safe to "remove". So i downloaded titanium back up. I then made a backup of everything I had on my phone. Took a few minutes for it to make a back up of everything but I figured if something went wrong I'd be able to just back it up. I then deleteddddddd everything that people said it was safe to remove. And I've had no problems with the phone since, BUT my problem is now that I saw people said you should FREEZE instead of REMOVE I went and downloaded titanium back up PRO with 4shared. I'm now using pro and i've gotten some of the applications restored and frozen, but now when i try to restore the rest it just keeps loading and nothing happens. ANY IDEAS and why is it so bad to remove instead of freeze the app.

why freeze
Simply put, you should freeze as opposed to delete in case you accidentally brick your phone before a .sbf file is available to rescue you. Of course u can apply some common sense to this and be relatively sure deleting blockbuster apk isn't going to throw a wrench in your system, but some of those moto files are a bit riskier. Best bet play it safe bro...btw thanks for putting up a good list of the bloatware to delete/freeze for others.
Sidenote: if u r ispencer from honolulu, nice to see u on the android side of things. I was an iphone hacker and jailbreaker right down the street from the ispencer store...I. hosted a few cydia repos for the simple mobile mms fix

De-Bloat your XT860

Even though we don't have much in the way of Custom ROMS for our beloved XT860 at this point, you can get rid of much of the bloatware and speed up your device quite a bit.
I must give credit to lifeinanalog and his original post on Android Forums regarding bloatware on the Bell XT860.
I am in no way responsible for anything that you do to your phone. While this has worked great for me, it may not work out the same way for you.
You will need root access: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240130
And will need Titanium Backup Pro installed: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackupPro&hl=en
Using Titanium Backup Pro, I have frozen the following Apps. Once you reboot your device, they will no longer appear in your app drawer. You can always bring them back by 'un-freezing' them:
Cardock
Citrix receiver
Connected music player (I use an alternate music player)

The 'phone portal' does not affect your ability to make calls. From what I have read it is just another way to connect to the device through your computer. See this post here for more detailed information about it: https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/28340
I am not sure what the suggestions apps do, but freezing them hasn't caused any problems.

I'm hesitant to remove anything because of the lack of an .sbf for the XT860.

I tried doing a manual debloat a while back but didn't really see much performance change. That's why I made those changes to the build.prop files (I posted it under general). My phone is pretty fast, but the battery still really sucks. I think we are all impatiently waiting the XT860 update together!
I manually removed about 50MB of apk's in system/app folder of the 5.7.894 ROM. I did not remove Yahoo and Corporate.
I can't sync the FaceBook and/or Twitter avatars with my address book. Did I remove too many?

Yeah. If you uninstall, there's no way to get it back without pushing/installing the apk manually (Which is really bad if your phone needs the uninstalled app to run).
If you just freeze it, it has all the effects that uninstalling does (keeps the system from reading/using it) except if you need it back, just press unfreeze and all is well.

I actually have never seen the verizon visual voicemail app on my Bionic. Hard to believe, I know. So, are you paying for the Verizon VVM service?
When I was waiting for a Google Voice invitation I found a pretty cool VVM app called YouMail; it allows you to set different answering machine greetings for different people or groups. I think I just wanted Google Voice so bad, I didn't hang long enough with YouMail. Both are totally free!!
Location to download deleted stock APK's?
I am a noob to XDA but I rooted my Bionic right when I got it about 6 months ago. After I rooted it I deleted a few of the bloatware app's that I thought I would never need, but I did not realize that it would mess up OTA updates. I now want to get the .902 update but it keeps failing. I am assuming it is because I deleted City ID, Slacker Radio, V CAST Media Manager, V CAST Music, VCAST Tones, and V CAST Videos. I have looked all over XDA and the web and have not found them anywhere to download. Can anyone send me these files so I can get the update? I could do a complete restore but I would prefer to do it this way. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

There are other ways to get back on the OTA update path. Just look around and you'll find them.
Good luck

After the .902 update, I found some new apps listed in TBP as not backed up. I'm assuming these are the new apps added with the update (apps I've frozen are bold):
Amazon MP3 2.0.15
Apps 2.00.54
Emergency Alerts 2.3.4
MOG Music 1.0.1
Music 2.3.4
Slingbox 1.0
Videos 1.4.2
VZW Package Installer 1.0
I'm not sure what the 2 unfrozen apps do, so I left them alone.

Emergency will allow your carrier to send you Emergency Alerts based on your geographic location. It's part of the new national Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). The Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) - so essentially you're carrying a weather/emergency radio around with you - and you don't have to "opt in" to the area you're in. Traveling through a blizzard/tornado warning area, it will vibrate and have an audible alert to let you know.
It's been a long time coming & as an emergency preparedness/response professional, I love it. Please don't disable it as bloatware, it's far from it.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll keep it unfrozen. Could prove useful someday
I uninstallEd a couple of apps "bloatware" which I honestly don't remember the needle of, is there any way to get them back?? "restore bloatware"
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
The emergency alerts will also let you know when there is an amber alert, or at least it is supposed to.

Thanks.

Yes, that is why your update is failing. If you search around, you can fix the issue (like the link below yours says).

Question Reduce idle battery drain

Hello everyone,I left my phone overnight for 8 hours at 100% battery and after 8hours of idling it was at 80%,this seems to much for me. I'm on EEA firmware 12.5.3 and I debloated removing many apps what do you suggest to check or remove?
Try putting it on airplane mode before setting it down for the night. I noticed this drain also, but this made a significant difference. I'm hoping the 12.5 update will sort it!
You are right, putting it into airplane mode should reduce power consumption, probably 5g consume a lot of energy. Now I went into battery mode and resticted apps in background I don't use like assistant, scanner, recorder, notes, and much more
Kill cloud and cloud backup apps.
If you got Google play Services, disable that when not using. Google backup Transport and Framework can be permanently disabled. Kill Google Firebase and feedback for Google, manufacturer, apps and carrier. For starters.
No need to put in Airplane mode if you take out the trash that's needlessly running in the background sucking the battery down.
Could you drive me trough the settings please? Where I can do this? I disabled many things but I want to be sure what I missed

I'm not holding the device and I have a Note 10+ but there are similar issues on all Android phones.
You need to be able to see what apks are draining the battery and using the internet. On Pie which I use is easier to do than with Q and 11 however you may have resources on those systems I'm unaware off.
Disable all power management and address the power hogs individually on a case by case basis.
You can use Karma Firewall to block internet access to rogue apps which will decrease their battery usage. However it's valuble logging features are disabled in Q and above. There may be a ADB work around... I don't know.
Package Disabler is very useful as well. There are non-Samsung variants of the apk you can likely use real time.
Play with it which what I did.
It's time consuming... and what works for some won't work for all. My 10+ was a hot running power hog; today it's a cool running, fast, stable, heavily optimized platform. Once done, do not update the OS or you'll be starting from scratch, again.
Use the Hidden Settings for MIUI app on the Google Play store to disable all the apps that cannot be disabled through the normal app menu (no root required):
Hidden Settings For MIUI - Apps on Google Play
More settings for Xiaomi devices to get a better user experience.
play.google.com
Well the most draining app is Google play services which I don't know what it is used for

Google Backup Transport, Gmail, Gmaps, Find my Device and Playstore mostly. A few other 3rd party apps are dependencies as well like paid for Playstore apps, some of those will run normally without it though*.
Otherwise you can safely leave it disabled.
Find my Device will not initialize as a Device Administrator on reboot without it enabled, an apk I loathe. A reboot with Google play Services enable though will likely be needed to access Playstore.
Playstore is a mess, running in the background.
*like Accubattery if you firewall block it. SD Maid same issue.
That's what I don't understand, Google gmail has been uninstalled via adb, gmaps has been restricted in background (also need to ask location permission everytime it starts), play store has been restricted in background and find my device disabled, so I don't know why it keeps running all the time, what should I do? Shall I install MIUI optimization? The only thing I don't want to lose are whatsapp push notifications, step counter, messages and phone calls notifications
Also my device is rooted, hiw can I prevent Google play services from running in background and being used only when requested? Same for carrier services (what's used for?) And Xiaomi services framework

Find my Device still runs even when disabled.
As does Google Backup Transport and Framework.
Google play Services just does what it wants.
WhatsApp... you're kidding, right? I won't let that FB etc or any "social app" on my machine. Multiple security risks written all over (and into) it.
20% overnight is a lot, I get 4% overnight with no special settings. How's the signal strength? I've noticed that signal strength can have a negative impact on battery when looking for a signal as you mentioned airplane mode seems better.

It's using the internet either polling or transferring data needlessly. You need to find the source.
My 10+ can receive texts and calls at night and still uses only 2-3% in 6 hours with touch to see AOD running.
Before when Google Backup Transport was running (even though it was turned off) it was more like 8-10%. Gookill is a mess.

Well WhatsApp is need to communicate with my wife lol,and my family.
Where can I find these backup transport? I run through the settings and restricted background activity for many apps, I got to see overnight what my new drain will be so I can report you.
What carrier services does? If I restrict background activity will I still receive sms and WhatsApp?
The only apps I have installed on my phone which I installed are: Whatsapp, tapatalk, Kiwi browser (uninstalled chrome), youtube vanced and magisk. All the rest if the apps are the one that came with the firmware. I uninstalled a lot of them plus some packages through adb. Still Google play services and carrier services are the most demanding. I don't want to loose the ability to use maps but only when I use it obviously. I want super low battery drain in idle

Why not use text messaging instead? It's battery usage is low.
-You- really need to know what you are disabling... one at a time.
There are likely more than one or two apps contributing to high battery usage.
Play with it.
Like I said you can enabled/disable Google play Services as needed in settings.
You'll find Google Backup Transport Services and Framework there as well.
Each device and user are different, one solution doesn't work for all. You'll need to become familiar with your device to do this right.
In settings where? And what should I restict or deactivate?
I think I solved the issue by resticting a lot of background activities through manage apps, usage access, revocation and permissions, now the phone stayed a 100% for more than 5hours
