Performance tweak - Dell Streak 7

Hi...
First, I will take no credit nor blame for the success or failure of your beloved DS7 as a direct result of applying the tweaks....
I am simply posting a link of a performance tweak that I found that seems to help with how my tablet is performing.
I applied the tweaks to my WiFi DS7 running ICS B4 and although I have only been using it for the last couple hours, I can certainly tell that it's performing much smoother.
I have not yet explored all the changes the tweaks has made to my system so be warned that the mileage may vary.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353903
I applied the tweaks (version 6 - the newest one) via CWM.
I downloaded the zip file but since it's saved to my internal card, I had to first copy it over to my external card so CWM could see it. So once that's done, simply boot into recovery mode and flash.
I hope this helps and if it does, please hit the thank you link...
I will be posting our results of this tweak to the OP to give him proper credit.
Good luck.
BTW.. I am running this on my Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 also with favorable results so far...
Edit: So, I used this tweak package for about a day now and it seems to help out with the performance a lot. The only thing is, it froze my DS7 a few times initially. I upped the idle CPU Freq. limit to 312 (under CM9 Performance tab in settings) yesterday afternoon and so far no more freezes. I did this because one of the system freeze event took place in idle. It would freeze where only a hard reset (pin hole next to SD slot) would shut it down. Other than that, I am liking the smoother UI now.

Interesting I'll give it a go and see where the chips land for me

TELUS – SHOLS_U2_03.11.0 and app2sd works too!!

ok i have updated to the new firmware and used app2sd from my previous post(other ones dont work on my milestone)
first i did 2 nano backups one just data and the other a full backup in case i screw up.i then flashed the new telus sbf after i did a wipe and then factory reset ,then i rooted(using open recovery)installed app2sd then did a nano restore of my data and voila its running with all my apps.
i must say the update is awesome gps locks in real quick it runs smoother overall everything launcher games, menu, home screen etc without overclock apk.no lag at all ..call are clearer but lets see on that still early.here is the link to the file http://groupoften.wordpress.com/ and my previous post on how to app2sd http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=692367
I am using this one since the day of release. All annoying bugs are ironed - location based service in 3G on non-Telus network works, no more music starting and stopping on its own, the newer and better youtube app and many other improvements.
Overall - HUGE improvements over current Telus stock one.
Edit: I forgot to mention the most important improvement: people stopped complaining I am breaking up on them when talking to me!!
do i just flash this using RBD?
Simply follow the how-to: http://groupoften.wordpress.com/category/how-to/

yes i love that i dont break up on call's anymore also i notice battery life is better.the phone no longer reboots on its on
im new here, just a question, so this is the SBF file, what part of the phone does it change? I have the nandroid backup from other posters here after i flashed this SBF my RAM has gone down a lot, does anyone know? thanks
Check the other goodie G.O.T. offers - their open recovery. There are few hacks that it can apply which will cure your memory problems (as well as others like paid apps on market/etc).
the got hacks do not work you just get stuck in a boot loop
Just installed this firmware everything works. Ran GOT openrecovery too. 1.04a worked flawlessly. Running apps2sd from openrecovery was so cool. Partitioned my sd card, installed busybox, installed apps2sd, as well all my apps got moved over automatically. All done from openrecovery.
imma have to try this out soon

Thanks a lot for the link to the ROM and the GOTS OpenRecovery, I never even knew about this. Hopefully the music auto-start issue goes away now!

Music auto-start is fixed. Along with geolocation issues in 3G and noise cancelation issues. Battery seem to last a tad longer too. Overall - I am extremely happy with the GOT Telus release!

I had issues earlier with G.O.T.'s JIT but realized it was my fault and it had to do with the dalvik-cache. After clearing it and installing JIT, those problems went away. However I was still unable to get JIT working 100%. Everything seemed to work fine until I started up Google Navigation, and then as soon as it locked onto a satellite the Milestone rebooted by itself. (EDIT: It's probably an overclocking issue, I had VSEL=56 with 1GHz; turning it up to 62 seems to have fixed it)
Audio bug doesn't seem to happen anymore. I did notice, however, at one point the audio played for a fraction of a second while doing some file browsing.... It was probably the bug trying to show up + the fix trying to suppress it. No big deal, as long as it's not too loud when it happens in public ;-)
yeah it happens.
I think it was a quick and dirty fix for it. Unfortunately only applicable to the stock Music app. Any other media app will auto play still

[Q] cm6 slows down then crashes

i was doing my 5k run with my recently updated hero and about a mile into the run pandora radio started skipping and then stopped. when i looked at my phone it was rebooting. i have task manager and killed all the apps before i started and unchecked jogtracker and pandora so i could use them. it didnt last long. the phones screen froze and dimmed then crashed until it finally restarted. is there a reason for the crash. seems to me like a memory problem. i have a two gig card with one pt. five left on it. and the internal memory is at 91mb. it always worked before i rooted and installed cm6. the phone in general is way faster and more responsive since i put cm6 on it but for some reason the two apps running together arent working. thanks for any help
Try removing the task manger reboot into recovery and wipe Dev/ cache and try it then might work good luck
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
I've tried running with and without various task managers and always wind up uninstalling and reminding myself that I should know better.
I seriously don't think Froyo and these mods need a task killer. If anything, they seem to cludge things up. My phone was running beautifully for two weeks and earlier today I thought I'd try out a different task killer. Mistake. I uninstalled it after 1/2 hour because it just made the phone feel funky.
Try running without for a couple weeks....

+1, CM6 does not need a task killer/manager. The best method is to download AutoKiller (which lets you alter Android's internal memory manager, much more effective than task killers) and change the settings to Strict or Aggressive. Also, two of the biggest problems that create soft reboots that you describe is (a) the VM heap size being too small and (b) CPU speeds being too high. So, steps to take:
1) Uninstall task killer
2) Install AutoKiller and change settings to Aggressive
3) Change SetCPU/Overclock Widget settings to 691 max/595 min with screen on, 480 max/245 min screen off
4) Change VM Heap size (in Cyanogenmod Settings) to 24 MB and reboot
The only other possibility I can think of would be kernel instability. If you flash Decand3nce's #14 Stable kernel found here it is far more stable than the stock kernel and (IMHO) has much better performance than the stock kernel.
These steps should rectify any memory and/or CPU overconsumption problems you are having that could cause the reboots (as well as make your phone much faster, smoother, and more stable). If these steps don't fix it, it most likely is a problem with one of the apps themselves.
Good luck!
thanks for the help.
also on the restart i got this message Sorry the applicating spring updater (process com.sprint.ce.updater) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again. force close. this is probably the cause of all the problems thanks
the changes u pointed out seemed to have fixed the phone so far. thanks so much for the great instructions. u da man.

Its the amount of memory each application can take up maximum. You tend to get smoother running stops with higher vms; I set mine to 24.
Froyo Hero to the rescue

[Q] need help with multiple issues

Okay it all started when I updated my original Samsung Galaxy S i9000 running Eclair to Froyo I9000XXJP3 using Samsung Kies. Since then its been really slow and very laggy. I ran around Google for a bit and found some clues about doing a factory reset just after updating to Froyo. To do this I would like to download all apps that can be installed onto and SD card to my SD card so I dont have to re-install all the 111 apps I have after factory reset. It would be pretty cool if someone told me how to backup my contacts, ALL of my settings, my email, basically EVERYTHING on my phone that I would have added on myself after I started using it. Of course I am guessing that the default Samsung Apps that came with the phone and are still available on Froyo will still be available after the factory reset.
My next problem. While someone on these forums tell me how to backup ALL of my data (apps, contacts, media, etc........) onto an SD card before factory resetting I decided I will try to root my phone and apply OneClickLagFix V2.2+. So I used an Windows app called SuperOneClick to root my phone, successfully. After this I installed OneClickLagFix, gave it permission. Then I installed the OneClickLagFix V2.2+, also successfully. After this I tested my phone with Quadrant Benchmark and I got a score of 1956 (which is amazing because I had got 915 before I had applied the LagFix). This is all amazing, but I realised that my battery is draining really fast, because usually if I don't use my phone in the night while sleeping for approx.6-8 hours it drains little to nothing of the battery, but after applying the lag fix I left it on at night (with full battery) while sleeping and when I woke up it had only half of its battery left, so I am guessing OneClickLagFix V2.2+ drains my battery while trying to speed up my phone which is really not helpful (which is why I would like to try to factory reset as a means of speeding up my phone without draining battery).
The third thing, still related to the topic of battery power and speeding up Froyo. I realised that even after applying the OneClickLagFix V2.2+ and gaining a Quadrant mark of 1956, my Galaxy S still did not have the iPhone style smoothness I would expect from the powerful 1Ghz processor in the phone, so please dose anyone have any ways of basically speeding up the phone (with iPhone style smoothness) and not draining battery.
My next thing is not a problem, it's just for fun. I heard that the Galaxy S's CPU can be overclocked to 1.2GHz and 1.6GHz. Could someone post a guide that explained in detail what I have to do to overclock my Galaxy S because I am quite new to hacking my phone and things like that.
So my questions so far:
How to speed up my Froyo phone (make it very fast and smooth like the iOS) without draining too much battery?
How to backup EVERYTHING (like all my downloaded apps, contacts, SMS, etc..) before factory resetting?
How to overclock CPU to 1.2GHz and 1.6GHz?
Hi, I'm still running 2.1 Eclair but maybe i can help a bit. I very much doubt that its OneClickLagFix draining your battery, ive been running it for over 6 months without any problems and so have thousands of others but you could try looking through the OneClickLagFix thread just in case
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784691&highlight=oneclicklagfix
Next thing, are you running a task manager or process killer? they can drain the battery while they kill a process and it starts again and gets killed again and starts agai...... you get the idea
I use AutoKiller Memory manager from the market. This works with the built in android process killer and just tweaks it to work better. I find the moderate preset setting to be good but others have suggested going further so you may need to experiment on that.
Also are you sure you didnt install another 'rogue' app? some apps are known to stop the phone from going into sleep mode and that would also cause battery loss at night.
As for backing your things up, AppBrain from the market will take care of your apps if you make an account with them and use your Google log in. It will remember which were installed and put them back when you are ready, I dont think it will save 'in game' data like saves and such though. I cant help with contacts, messages and the rest, sorry.
Lastly, to overclock it you will need to be rooted (as you said you are) and use an app called SetCPU from the market. But be warned, firstly it is guaranteed to cost more battery power overclocking it and the phone will get hotter in use. It will however speed things up a little IF it doesnt blow up LOL. The opposite would be to underclock and save power but then it would run slower and you don't seem to be aiming for that
Good Luck
Thanks!
Thanks for the help, I used App Brain to sync apps and also backed up my apps using Titanium Backup to my SD card, which also backed up the app data. Also, I backed up my contacts by pressing the menu button on the contacts screen and exporting. To backup my messages I used SMSBackup. It all worked well.
I will look into the battery matter, yes, I am using Advanced Task Killer but after reading your response I did not re install it after the factory reset. I will definitely try AutoKiller Memory manager and look into the battery matter further if it doesnt change things.
I tried SetCPU but it only lets me move the sliders upto 1GHz, not higher. Any help is appreciated. And also I just want to try the 1.2GHz, because I am guessing 1.6GHz will REALLY push things past the limit and might mess things up. If things mess up with 1.2GHz I will put it back to 1GHz, and if you had not told me I wouldnt have known about the heating problem, thanks .
How does overclocking work anyway?
Similar issues like whoosh with my phone too.
Pre froyo (no root no lagfix) - app drawer page transition smoothness superb. No lag or stutter in transitions.
Post froyo (pre root and lagfix) - stuttery app drawer page transitions.
Root and voodoo lagfix have not fixed that problem.
- Quadrant ~1500
- formatted internal sd card.
- factory reset post froyo install.
- formatted ext sd card.
- ext sd card sandisk class 4 16gb.
Any solutions to above issues would be greatly appreciated as i would assume would also assist op with their issues.
Cheers
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Hey, erm, I thought the Galaxy S has 512MB of RAM but the RAM manager is 300 and something MB of RAM. Maybe thats why it is so slow, because i would expect iPhone-style smoothness from a 1GHz Processor and 512MB of RAM, but looks like it has a cap on. Is there anyway we can fully uncap the RAM usage, so all the 512MB is used? that would be helpful
problems fixed
I used the power of my rooted phone to titanium backup (pro recommended) and then backed up all apps with user data. I factory reset my phone which speeded everything up A BIT. then i discovered Darky's ROM 5.5 (maybe higher by the time some read this post) and installed that following the CLEAN guide written very well (video too) on his forum (CLEAN recommended to upgrade from normal galaxy s firmware to darky's ROM then EASY guide for upgrading from past versions of Darky's ROM).
After following the guide, everything booted up perfectly (amazing gingerbread experience, it feels and looks a lot like it, just missing vibration from gingerbread keyboard and some gingerbread icons, also if darky reads this, maybe you should integrate the new Nexus wallpaper in, but its not that hard to install it yourself either so its fine).
I set the phone up, redownloaded Titanium Backup and it took about half an hour to restore all my apps (with all data). Also note that before I had installed Darky's ROM 5.5 it had taken me 1 and a half hours to restore apps using Titanium Backup so you can see how significantly fast Darky's ROM is. It is amazing!
Well done!

N4N (Neked 4 Nougat) I6/I5 Kernel for 710,715,810,815,817There's just nothing like good ol' stock. Everything just works. Even after 2 years they're still selling these Tabs. And they can still compete with newer ones. So on with the show!!!!
You flash this at your own risk. I'm am not responsible for anything that happens!!! There's the discaimer.
MAKE A FULL BACKUP IN TWRP!!!!!
These kernels modify your ROM. So you WILL NOT be able to FLASH/RESTORE the stock kernel only.
A kernel tuner (Synapse) is enabled for V2.0 only - Get Synapse from the Playstore
See post #2 for Synapse info and other stuffs
Install instructions:
You MUST HAVE TWRP installed to flash this!!

I'm just not a fan of the DevDB format anymore. It's difficult to update and modify. So this is what you get.
SYNAPSE Kernel Tuner - Maybe some others stuffs too.....
Well, because Synapse is built in now, here's some needed info on it:
Synapse is an awesome and custom built kernel tuner. It can do so much more than a lot of other tuners. And because we have Exynos processors, it's about the only one we can use. But it can create a lot of problems getting to work. Hence this post. :silly:
I decided to make this built in instead of a flashable add on. It's actually easier and less invasive to do it this way.
UCI, is what Synapse uses to work. It's built into the ramdisk. I've added a lot of tunables and may add more later.
Now for the fixes and problems you WILL run into:
If you have issues, make sure to check out these threads. As they will probably have better info about Synapse issues. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736986 and https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3558888
No UCI support detected These are the famous words you WILL run into.
When will this show up?
When Synapse is first installed
On reboot
When you've pushed your Tablet too far
The fixes:
On first install from the Playstore. You will need to go to Settings>Apps>Synapse>Storage. Then select "Clear Cache", THEN "Clear Data. In that order!!
You may have to backout to Settings and do it one or two more times. You want the numbers for cache and data at "0".
On reboot: This usually works unless you've messed up the settings or flash another kernel
On reboot select "Menu" and "Close all".
Open Synapse and hit "CANCEL" to have your last settings applied. (I know it's not normal but it works)
Close synapse, and reopen it to make sure of settings. (If "apply or cancel" don't show up at the top, you're good to go.)
Worst case scenario:
You will need to go to Settings>Apps>Synapse. Select "Force stop". Select "Storage". Then select "Clear Cache", THEN "Clear Data. In that order!!
You may have to backout to Settings and do it one or two more times. You want the numbers for cache and data at "0".
If you follow the above, Synapse will work. It hasn't failed me in over 50 tests, probably more. :silly:

Hopefully the 810 looks better on the screen. The 710 is a weird screen size and doesn't fill it. But it still comes in handy.
My "Neked Maker Rom" has it built into the build.prop. But i found I could add it to the kernel. It'll still work with both installed, which I have.

Ok.
I'm wondering if it is Synapse with the battery. Guess we'll see.
Haven't spent a lot of time with the kernels lately. Trying some different things, but keep coming back to what I've had in the past.
EX kernel managers builder was interviewed on XDA recently. flar2 . Had some interesting things to say about SELinux. Guess that might be why his tuner doesn't have an option for permissive. Just food for thought for us all.

I'll read through that later... his kernel is what I use on my nexus9. His dev app is pretty good too, playstore- DevCheck Hardware and System Info. Smart guy.
Just a little update
I have the 710 and 810 kernels done. I should get 715 and 815 shortly. Then I'll get them uploaded
Just patched to 3.10.61. No additions til I get them as far as I can.
The kernel is EOL at 3.10.108
V1.1 for all 4 is in OP Just patched to 3.10.61
I've changed the way I'm doing it so it's faster. And it's easier for others to track.
I'm hoping to get all the way to 3.10.108 for the next version. Then the addons.
We shall see. :fingers-crossed:
Thank you ! Amazing and smooth as expected ??
810 v1.1 A-Okay
V1.2 is in OP!!!!! Just patched to 3.10.105, which is Feb 2017
Not quite sure if I'll go to 108, or do some addons. I'm kinda burned out on the patches.
More than likely I'll patch to 108, but I am dreading it as just the 3 more patches has over 750 fixes.
And seeing as how our Tablets AND our Kernel is at EOL, I might as well finish it out.
Regardless, enjoy.

1.2 good to go of course.
Okay, so I don't know what is missing or changed in the kernel but all of a sudden I am getting horrible battery life I can almost watch it drop sometimes. If you're thinking of updating more maybe putting back some of the tweaks that you had? First?
Edit- it literally dropped a percent when I typed the above.

Okay, so I don't know what is missing or changed in the kernel but all of a sudden I am getting horrible battery life I can almost watch it drop sometimes. If you're thinking of updating more maybe putting back some of the tweaks that you had? First?

Now that's interesting. I used my Tab last night and all was well.
It could be a rogue app. Or maybe you need to shut it off for a minute. Then boot it up again. There were a lot of changes in the kernel and resetting doesn't always fix things. The battery might need to relearn too.
Side note:
Ya know how when climbing you see a peak and you just have to keep going til you can see over it? Yeah, well, I've just about finished the patches to 108. It'll be a couple days. I just barely got it built and need to see how it does.
Here's some pics of battery for me. And I've installed the kernel a few times too. So reboots are included.
Edit
There's an old trick I still do for "Ghosts in the computer".
Power the Tab off, wait for bout 15 sec, then just press the vol down, vol up and power buttons. Just a press. Do it a few times then boot it up.
The old belief is that there is still an electrical charge that can keep things in memory. By doing this, it'll discharge any current that is lurking.
It may be nothing, but I feel better doing it.

I really wish it was ghosts or Rogue app... rebooted 1.2 browsed Reddit for 17 minutes lost 7%. Flashed 1.1 browsed Reddit and as I'm typing this only 2% in 22 minutes.... We will see what 1.3 brings when it is cooked.

So with 1.2 I was getting 3 to 4% at idle an hour battery drain. Installed 1.1 and overnight 8 hours 1%. Could just be something with my tab and that kernel not liking each other, lol.

I think I found the issue. It was very random and hard to find, but I'm pretty sure I have it fixed now. It'll come out when I finish/ release 108.
For now, all the kernels run fine, so if there's no issues with what's installed, then just keep running it till I get 108 up. Like I said, it's a random thing with 105. Hit or miss. I'll pull v1.2(105)when I get v1.3(108) up.
Thanks for making me look into it. Lol
Thank you @engine95 for your amazing effort. You made my tablet super smooth. And really I was about to sell it, but you let me keep it for another year . Thanks ??????
V1.3 is in OP for all 4 kernels Patched to 3.10.108EOL
I've pulled V1.2 as it had random issues and/or isn't needed now with the fixed V1.3
Just a little FYI
Stock 3.10.9, vs Patched 3.10.108 - Stability vs Security
V1 is the mostly stock 3.10.9 kernel. It will be the most stable of all the kernels as Samsung has tailored it to our Tablet
The rest
These should be the most secure as it has all the Linux patches to date. Thing is, Samsung hasn't made adjustments to optimize the kernel to anything past 3.10.9
Patching it can cause some problems. Usually WiFi, Bluetooth, Battery, USB.
Patching it may make more current products useful. Routers, Game Pads, Hard drives etc....
So from here, I'll wait and see if we have more issues with the patched kernels before moving on.
My options?
Keep going with the patched kernel to build on
or
Go back to 3.10.9 for the stability, and leave the patched kernel where its at.
Let me know how V1.3 does so I can start with the addons on one or the other.
Thanks all and enjoy. :good:

Upgrade from Android 1.0 to 2.3.7

Hello. I recently stupidly flashed RC29 on my phone. That's how I got out of there.
How to:
1. You realized that you are on RC29. Do not worry. Let's start the escape.
2. Start phone without sim card. Type on the keyboard <ENTER button>setprop persist.service.adb.enable 1<ENTER button>. Reboot with a SIM card (any, not even a valid one)
3. Connect your phone to PC, download ADB and type command: adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.launcher/.Launcher
4. Download and install telnet: adb install telnet.apk
4.1 Once at the Home screen, open the keyboard and press the Enter key twice.
4.2 Type telnetd & press Enter. The Contacts screen will come up, just ignore it. There will be no indication that you did it right.
4.3 Open Android Telnet Client; type localhost in the large text box and 23 in the smaller text box on the right.
5. Download the recovery to a memory card and type the command in telnet:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/<your recovery>.img
Just type reboot recovery! Now you have a complete Recovery!
6. WARNING! Install 2.22.19.26I and reboot into recovery 2-3 times. Check the radio version in HBOOT. If version 2.22.19.26I install the HBOOT package. Reboot 2-3 times.
7. It's all. Install roms.
Pay attention! Clockworkmod is not recommended by Cyanogen developers. Use AmonRa. (cwm recovery left in the post in case of emergency)
The story of how I installed CyanogenMod 7:
1. Download CyanogenMod 7 build (DM me if rom not downloading)
2. Install HBOOT 1.33.0013d
3. Install ROM. Download the kernel (ezgb_2636_v1.5.1_S.zip). Install kernel.
4. Just restart and wait. Now you have working system!
Notes:
Restart in recovery - HOME + POWER
Restart in HBOOT - PHOTO + POWER
Reset - CALL + MENU + POWER
Safe mode - hold MENU while booting

sorry, even though it costs 500rub, I spent everything on MiPad 2. I don’t have money for it. Sorry((
PS. and notice. I am now trying to bypass android and make my firmware on android 1.0 for dream.
I quote the article on rooting G1 from Cyanogen Wiki "ClockworkMod is not recommended for Dream due to memory shortage and file corruption."
That's why I think it's better to use Amon_RA's
On my Desire Amon_RA 2.0.1 seems better than CWM 2.5.0.7
Below you can find CyanogenMod themed version of Recovery
By the way the new Telnet version is already on Mod edit: 4pda link removed
@russanandres Thanks a lot for the tutorial, you are a real lifesaver! Exactly what I needed to get a custom rom on my G1.
Although now I'm wondering, is android 2.3 perhaps too much for this phone? I was shocked to see that the actual usable ram out of the 192mb is just 96 and out of them ~30mb free. The device itself seems to be somewhat sluggish on 2.3, the default browser can't even load google without crashing. Although I noticed it's kinda inconsistent, sometimes it speeds up a bit and gets pretty close to 1.6 speed. On the stock 1.6 the phone was fairly snappy for what it could do, although it had terrible idle battery drain. The battery on 2.3 seems better from my first impressions.
For daily driver usage in 2022 what would make most sense, if you have experience with more roms on this device? 2.3 just really seems pointless to me, as the device doesn't have enough power to run properly apps that require android 2.3 as minimum, pretty much all apps that I have installed run on 1.5/1.6+. For example, I have my music library in .opus format, tried foobar2000 and gonemad music player(they supposedly support opus) versions that are 2.3+ and they both straight up crashed on startup, perhaps due to the low ram/lack of instructions.
The speed itself doesn't annoy me as much as the soft reboots that happen from time to time when the phone gets too ''tired'', especially after reboot, for me in about 50% of the time the phone just soft reboots again like a half minute after the first reboot.
Edit: The reboots after the bootup happen if I just don't let it idle for 2 minutes or so white it's reading my sdcard, which has quite a lot of files. I doubt it's from the actual speed of the sdcard as it's a 16gb sandisk ultra, should be sufficient for this phone.
A slight overclock option seems to be present in the performance settings but I won't dare to use it, two days ago I had to do a somewhat professional solder reflow+SoC heat revive on 400C for 30 seconds with a bga soldering station and some flux, that brought it back to life, previously it would work only for about an hour after I heated it with a hairdryer. My point is that the processors in these devices haven't aged too well, in terms of wearing out mine is pretty much done for and who knows when it's gonna die again. I also managed to put a copper heat plate over the soc(with thermal paste) to absorb some of the heat in addition to the metal plating and hopefully to increase the remaining lifespan of the silicon.
Back on the topic, maybe android 2.1/2.2 would be more suitable and still with good features(mostly looking at the quick settings), although I have no idea honestly, I haven't played around with android versions this old to know which ones are lighter and heavier. 2.3 definitely seems heavier than 1.6, that is for sure.
Availability in terms of links is another issue but with research and some use of the web archive I suppose we would be able to find at least one rom per android version.

I think a swap of 256 MB or more will save your G1 on 2.3.7
So if 2.3.7 was slow, then any Android 2.x.x will be slow
Within 2.x.x the system showed more and more performance with each version

That's a great idea. I have to look into it, as far as I know I have to make a partition for the swap on the sdcard then enable it on boot with some sort of a script. Is that correct?
Guess that's what I'm gonna be doing today after work, apart from transcoding my music library to mp3 unless the music players decide to work with the swap enabled.
Another thing I wanted to mention, is it normal to have such high idle drain on this phone? Even on cm7 in airplane mode it seems to drain ~4-5% per hour or so. Perhaps my battery calibration is off, I charged it overnight and wiped the battery stats hoping to resolve this issue but it seems to persist. I got a nearly brand new vhbw aftermarket battery which should be about 900-950mah capacity from my measurements, so it's not due to an aging battery.
In comparision I also have a galaxy s1 on cm7.2 with a 12 year old battery on ~70% capacity and that phone lasts like 10 days idle with a sim card.

Swap partition can be done directly in CWM
You need to find Partion SDcard!!! ALL DATA ON THE SD WILL BE REMOVED!!!
For swap you can use this script
Code:
busybox mkswap /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
busybox swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
echo 100 > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
And about the battery: on all the HTC smartphones that I had (Sensation XE, Desire A8181, Wildfire S) it has been bad since
So try to replace it.

I see, thanks for the explanation.
I'll hold off from getting a new battery for now, hoping that this battery will get better calibrated. I'm also not certain that the problem is in the battery, if I use the device non-stop from full charge it seems to hold on for about 1h45mins SoT before going flat, which for a device with a tiny battert and a 65nm soc doesn't seem unusual.
But I was also wondering about your experience with the battery, do you also get this high idle drain or is it just my unit?
Lastly, I was wondering if multitouch can be enabled somehow. From my quick search it appears that the G1 screen supports it but its purposely disabled, although some people show it off being enabled.

The G1 supports multi-touch
It's very strange why it's not in CM7
Xperia X8 has multitouch on the custom ROM but no multitouch on the stock ROM
I found a better opmitized gingerbread rom, that still has a working link.
The system runs much smoother than on cm7.
I have to add, something missed in the tutorial is updating the radio to an even newer version that expands the available ram by 15mb. That is like 50%, considering that the phone has 30mb ram free otherwise.
Link for the radio- here
I directly updated to 2.22.28.25_S via recovery and faced no issues. It is recommended to use superwipe first, with a custom configuration file in the root of the sdcard, that will do a full wipe except for the sdcard. (Source) (Source 2)
In the custom config set:
Wipe_Sd_Secure=no
Wipe_Sd_Ext=no
I received a new sdcard that I will use for the phone, a 64gb Patriot EP series that I got for 5€, these are very fast and dirt cheap. Probably faster than the phone's sdcard reader can candle but that is fine. Point is, I ran the partition sdcard option in the recovery, I noticed it doesn't only ask for swap but it also asks for ext2 partition, what capacity should I select for that? Can't find much info for the ext2 parititions other than they are used for moving apps to the sdcard, although I have no clue how to enable that ability in the android os.
As for my battery issues, I'm certain that the culpit isn't software related but rather a failure of the Qualcomm PM7540 power management ic. The easiest way to test that, which I did, turn off the phone and wait, if the chip is fautly it will drain the battery while it is off, which it does for me(there is nearly no difference in discharge speed between the phone being on and off). I actually remember a year ago when the phone was still just sitting as a decoration on my shelf and just turned on with the hairdryer from time to time, that I had to pull out the battery or it would drain it completely while off, so the power ic failure isn't related to the processor failure at all. I don't know what is my luck, to have 2 dying important chips on one board
Perhaps I will try to remedy it the same way I did with the processor, clean it, place some flux and heat it for 30 secs at 400C. Or maybe a bit lower temperature this time. Technically both chips can be replaced and finding a donor isn't hard(especially for the power management ic, it appears that HTC HD2, Touch HD, Nexus One, Touch Pro, Diamond 2, Desire, SE Xperia X10, X10 Mini, BlackBerry Storm are only part of the devices that use this same power ic. But replacing such chips is extremely difficult and beyond my current abilities, giving it to a professional is not worth it either, the entire phone costs 40-50€(as collector's value) so with the cost of such repair I can instead purchase another G1.
Thank, it work fine

To flash That radio do i need to install the SPL "1.33.0013d"?
or i can keep using Danger SPL (1.33.2005)?
@Ulumia you know anything about this? is the "RAM Hack" SPL required?

Hey sorry for my late response, I just fired up my G1 which to my surprise(or not) failed to cold boot yet again so I had to give it the hair dryer treatment. Guess the hot air station fix worn out at some point after I stopped using the phone 2 weeks after applying it.
I have 1.33.0013d on mine, which appears to be the recommended version. looking at the description of the rom. I would avoid using another one if possible. Unfortunately I don't remember anything specific, so I can't give you more feedback.

As i found out you need that SPL to get the extra 15MB of Ram, but be aware that SPL is pretty dangerous, because it doesn't support Fastboot flash (and fastboot boot doesn't work, gets stuck when i try to boot recovery), so if you accidentally brick your phone and do not have a custom recovery it's RIP.
