[Q] Move apps to internal (USB) storage instead of removable SD card? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
Is there any way to have apps being moved to the internal (USB) storage instead of the external removable SD card. IMHO, the latter is - as the name suggests - removable, thus you'd lose your apps, while the USB storage is always with the phone (at least until you break it)...
Besides the moral question, I'm facing two problems with the external SD card holding apps:
1. apparently, these get somehow corrupted. I move a bunch of (innocent, no widgets, no system stuff, ...) to the SD card. Works fine... until I reboot, then hell breaks lose: Everything crashes, to the point that the phone warm resets. And that over and over again without escape (did I say I love backups ).
2. I changed my card now and copied over the .android-secure folder contents from my old to the new card. Yet, Android doesn't recognize them and insists in that they are unavailable.

I've had similar issues with #1, however I suspect that my SD card is misreporting 32GB when it is really only 16GB (it was a cheap one from ebay - won't do that again!!)
Not sure with #2 as never tried it - maybe you need to reapply superuser permissions to them?

I learnt the hard way - if you buy it cheap, you buy it twice.

Agreed, never buy memory there. Often (especially if they are suspiciously cheap), it's stuff that didn't pass quality tests, sold by some that work at the factory, or as you said, fake sizes.
However, my card worked perfectly well for a year in other phones, thus I think it's OK. Must be something with the phone, hope it ain't a hardware problem, though.
No clue what is wrong with copying over. There are no permissions on fat, thus cant be that. However, it might have been something with the copy process, I had a bit of trouble there. I hope it works next time due…
However, I would really prefer to have all in internal storage, but apparently that cant be done, sigh.

All Storage Card Files Gone!

I've been using a 6G ScanDisk card for the last 6 months, without any problems. I needed to move some files from the Tilt's internal memory to the Card, and to my surprise there was only a folder named "FilesToBeDeleted" on the Card. I DID NOT CREATE THIS FOLDER! Oh, and by the way the folder was empty!
Checking the storage of the card from the Memory Setting of the PPC, shows about 3 G in use, which is about what I had on it.
Can anyone shed any light on what could have happened? I can re-format the Card....but is it going to loose data again? Is this something that has happened to others?
Thanks for any help,

i have read that this has happened to some people .. not me yet (fingers crossed) don't know what causes this. You could try a recovery software and see if you can get the stuff back.
Can you or anyone suggest a recovery software? Checking the MicroSD on my laptop shows 2.88 GB being used, (and of course 2.78 GB Free) so the data should be there. I have also saved additional data to the card and it works fine.
Just wondering...is there some kind of virus out there that would do this? For all the data to be "hidden" and a new folder to be created....the card just didn't create a folder by itself....
WM a card killer
The same thing happened to my 4GB SD card in Blue Angel (twice ). It seems to me that WM kills allocation table while writing to the card. I tried lots of different soft to recover my card and finally PC Inspector File Recovery did the job. I used card reader and this soft on PC to recover most of my files but the folder and filenames were sometimes messed up. When using PCI FR do not mark to many files to recover/save at the one time because it crashes.
Don't save anything on your card before recovering !

Hope my Kaiser is not going to do this to me

Yup, I used that program too. Recovered "missing files" problems on my previous hw6515 and twice on my TytnII 8GB micro SDdisk.
I've always had that "FilesToBeDeleted" folder too, it's normally hidden and when I delete it it comes back. Nothing special, just some folder the system wants there for some reason apparently, just like the other couple of hidden ones like WMDRM. If you didn't see it before and it now appeared it might have been hidden and the same thing that corrupt the FAT unhid it for some reason.
If you can see 2.88GB used on the PC, are you sure you have also have forced hidden files to display? Your data might be there but just hidden for some reason.
I have also saved additional data to the card and it works fine.

NEVER EVER do that to a media with a problem you might need to recover data from. This might just have ruined your last chance. On the opposite, when possible like on SD cards the first thing you'll want to do is set it as read-only.
When files are deleted, only their reference in the file table are, but the data itself is still present on the media, which allows recovery. But the locations the data is saved on are now marked as free, and anything you'll write on the card now can overwrite it, causing definitive loss.
Thanks a ton!!! The PC Inspector program worked great!! I was able to recover my files Next step, I guess, is to format the card and use it untill it decides to wipe my files out again. Of course my failth is the card will never be the same, and I'll keep a back up of the card also.....actually I was foolishly keeping the back-up for my Tilt on the card...can't trust that method anymore!
Thanks again for all the advise and information. As with all problems, you can always treat them as "learning opportunities", or...... throw the d*** thing out a window!!!!!
Same problem here, just ran into it last night and it's driving me nuts. Is there a way to recover/format the card from within the kaiser? Unfortunately the card reader I have has a max size limitation of 2gb and the card I'm using is 4gb - lame. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Borrow, lend, or steal another card reader.
When I purchased this MicroCard, from ScanDisk, it came with a SD adapter plus a USB Card reader. I threw the USB Card reader in my desk thinking that I would not need this. I found out, by accident, that this USB card reader was the only way I could read the card on a PC. Built in card readers on both my home desk top and laptop would not access the card....
Just passing on this little bit of information, because it never occured to me that I had to use that USB Card reader!
This happened to my girlfriend's phone too. One day some of her programs just didn't work and most everything was gone on her card. Never fixed it, just reformatted card. Scary though.
Yeah, I tried recovering the data using TestDisk, saw some recommendations for it from others with the same problem, but wasn't able to get anywhere with it unfortunately. So in the end all I could do was format it and start over. Ahhh, backups... if I'd only made one.
I think this is a WM issue. Since other devices have the same problem.
here is a quote from another thread

I have the same issue with my tytn2.
Sometimes when i play some mp3s from my SD card and the device goes to standby or the program is closed my SD card is suddenly empty.
Removing the SD card and put it back in usually fixes it, sometimes a softreset also works.
So i believe this is a WM issue

I disabled it w/ kaiser tweak. Still i have the issue
Has anyone had the issue while pretty much not ever using Windows Media Player mobile? I was playing DRM'd audio files, is that possibly a common theme?
Could it be Moving PIE Cache?
Happened to me too. 8GB card. Just getting back up and running...wish I had read this last night. I put a bunch of stuff back on the card. Oops. Oh well. I think the common thread may be:
moving your PIE Cache to the SD Card.
Anyone else with this problem also move PIE Cache? Used Memmaid 2.0 to change it.
different in my case, I haven't changed any of the cache settings for PIE.

Contents of the storage card dissappeared!

Yesterday when I attempted to play some games that were installed on the storage card, the links under Programs/Games no longer worked. Turns out the data on the storage card got wiped out.
The file explorer and Total commander both show only one folder in the storage card. Its called WMDRM. And there is one file in that folder called B1DA8AC498FF588D471330048DEFE8FA02D6350B.hds. Other than that the storage card seems empty.
But the funny thing is, the Memory app under settings shows that 700 MB of data on the storage card is in use. Also, under Windows Explorer, when I try to browse the contents of the phone, I can see ~700 megs of data being used on the storage card (check attached image.)
Can someone explain to me whats going on? Is all my data lost? Is there a way to recover it?
Thanks in advance

hidden files?
This actually happend to me recently. In my case I somehow, and I still have no idea how, checked the box to hide the files. It drove me nuts for about 20 minutes until I figured it out. as soon as I unchecked the box, everthing reappeared.
This has happened on my sons phone twice.. One time I magically fixed it by copying somethign back that "dissappeared" and once that file was "Back" everything else reappeared as well... Not sure what is going on.. and ideas?

Try reading the memory cards contents by using the USB reader that came with it. I have a Sandisk 6 GB card that kept on doing this but since retiring that to out of phone duties with its card reader and using my 16 GB Sandisk card in my TyTN II, all is now well. What card is it that you have?
If you search the forum you'll see this is a relatively common problem and people have been able to recover files in this way using specialist file recovery software. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure though so make sure your memory card is fully backed up in future.

Which software do you recommend? I've been trawling the search results, but either I'm simply using the wrong search terms, or I simply can't see the wood for the trees. I have a similar issue - my 8Gb card is showing as empty, despite apparently having 2.5Gb in use. And this statistic is reported both on my phone and a colleagues, as well as two different PCs when using a card reader.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

rola_electronics, thanks for the offer.
Everybody, thanks for your replies, guys.
When right clicking on the card, and selecting properties, it only showed like 5 files, but 700 megs in use. I had to reformat my card. Hard reset my phone (but that was because my phone was starting to get sluggish) reinstall everything.
But after a couple of weeks, it happened again (2 days ago.) I was playing Astraware sudoku, when the battery died. On recharging and rebooting, the card was fuxor3d again. Had to delete everything on it, and reinstall stuff again.
As for the suggestion of copying a new file and deleting it again for contents to reappear, I noticed that when I copied a file and deleted it, a ton of temporary files appeared on it. I deleted them manally later.
Kiwi, my card is Sandisk 6GB microSD.

I'm not sure what ROMs you are using, but I know there have been issues with some that have the SD Power Management enabed. There are threads kicking around about it. You can disable it with Advanced Config.
Good luck
I'm using ATT stock, minus the bloatware (with the soft reset just before config trick)
your card -could- so to speak, dying. Do you have another one handy? Try using it for a while if you do and see what happens.
FWIW my ROM was the same as the one I'm still using (HTC standard throughout) and I've made no configuration changes associated with the microSD card other than swapping the 6 GB Sandisk with a 16 GB Sandisk. I've not used advanced config or similar and it's a plain 'as from the factory' setup. I strongly suspect this is associated with the card or at least a compatibility issue between the card and phone. Although power related issues may contribute to the likelyhood of problems in some cases, that wasn't the case with me.
When I did loose the card contents, I wasn't able to recover them using any software (I've read here that others had some luck however - though I don't recall what software they used). I had all my crucial files backed up and just low level erased the card in its USB reader using the HDD Wipe tool from the HDD Guru website (Sandisks own utility to perform these functions was not free - unlike every other HDD manufacturer I know of that does provide free HDD utility software to work with its drives, hence why I found the HDD Guru tool). I then formatted the card in Windows and restored my files from backup using Win XP Professionals native drive backup program. It was good as new (but did the same thing about 3 times in total before I became fed up with it and swapped out the card). I would suggest that those considering the purchase of a card to use with the TyTN II be wary of (at least some) Sandisk 6 GB microSDHC cards.
Thanks for your responses, Kiwi and kaiserII101.
Kiwi, what app do you recommend to backup the SD card?
If it gets corrupted again, can I just reformat it, and restore the backed up files (file copy)?

As mentioned in my post above I just used the native backup and restore app built into Windows XP and used the card reader so the card showed as a drive and backed up everything. I'm using Win 7 now but haven't checked out all its similar options yet. The answer to your second question is yes (from within the app). Have a read of the Windows help relating to the backup/restore program. Not sure what it's called under Vista but I suspect something similar will be there built into the software. Otherwise you can simply copy all the files and folders across to a dedicated folder on your PC and if you prefer, just zip them up into a backup archive using something like Winzip.
Thank you Kiwi. The Win 7 app is also called "Backup and Restore".
So, if simple file copy suffices, I guess I'm just going to do that. Thanks for your help again.
I'd go for the backup - restore option

I put that into my Win 7 search box and found it but haven't used it yet - it looks like it does the same sort of thing the Win XP app did though so that will do it fine and it'll be much easier than having to copy files over and zipping them up manually.
So, if simple file copy suffices, I guess I'm just going to do that.

It'll depend what kinds of files you have and if they're not all straightforward things like mp3s, avi files or jpgs etc then you may run into problems if file attributes are changed by copying them directly. I think your best bet is to play it safe and use the backup - restore utility and just backup the whole card. It's usually easier and results in less space being used on the backup media because the files are automatically compressed (depending on configuration choices).

Try to transfer data thoruhg a card reader. Especially if it is a large amount like 3-5g of music. Moving data through the phone is fine in short bursts but I always founf it to be cleaner and faster through a card reader.

Man it sucked big time for so long but I was able to find a corrupted file on there and had to use File Assassin from Malwarebytes.org to delete it. Even then, it didn't want to go. I reformated it full fat and used the "slow" process that filled in 1's and 0's. It happened when I went to CM6.1 the first time.
Think I may have borked it myself during an bad install and then it would never work correctly. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard (I don't like GParted b/c you lose all your data. With MTPW, your FAT data is still there when you want to resize yout ext/swap) to set my partitions and once that was done, I would try to reinstall that same file. Wasn't until I figured out that it was causing so many problems, but it was the only ROM that would boot up. If I used it and then wanted to go to Wanhu or HM's ROMs (this was a few months ago), when I would restore those, it would break the partition and would never boot up. Wouldn't loop in the traditional sense where the animation would run then disappear and the run again, it would just continually run.
Not saying it is CM6 or anything like that, I just think I got a bad download or operator error and a corrupt file hit my card. I just reformatted to full Fat and no partitions and it works fine (for now). It was only the partitions that would not work. I would run MZor sd-ext test and it was horrible with all the errors it showed. I had been deciding to format full fat anyways and stay away from partitioning (I don't and never have used swap), and I have to say I think it is really better that way. I only have about 50+/-apps so my Dalvik isn't even close to filling up and half of them I don't even use.
OK thanks buddy! Looks like thats what I might have to do. So what would be the best method to move Apps over then with just fat32? If you have any advice for me I sure would appreciate it

On my wife's XT, i am just using the native Froyo app2sd (settings>manage apps>select app>move to sd [there is also an app in the market called Move2sd enabler that will move "non-movable" apps to the SD card]). Don't move any widgets to SD card though. On my Vibrant, I have't moved a single one over to the SD yet and have 1.5g left on internal.
FYI if you get an error when downloading an app from the market and it says,
"App not installed
Unknown Error-18"
Don't freak out, it is a known Froyo bug. All you have to do is plug your phone into your computer and look in the .Androidsecure folder (make sure you have show hidden folders checked on your PC) and delete this file.
smdl2tmp1.asec
You can do it through terminal on your phone too but sometimes it repopulates if you do it this way
su
rm mnt/secure/asec/smdl2tmp1.asec
Sorry for the thread hijack but it is kind of a fix for some SD problems.
the original microSD that came with the phone is kinda shady
mine had some problems, had to format it twice to get it working right
a friend of mine even worse, after a few use it died completely

Thanks, I tried that app just now and it doesn't do anything different than what the built in system tools does. It just keys me move apps on the phone to the sd card. My question is how can I move apps from my sd card (internal) to my external card to save space and have the same functionality a if the were installed in the phone. It would be cool if you could just install apps like you can on a 32 GB iPhone.

GMan901 & XDA Members:
If you're willing to shell out the cash for a Micro-SDXC card, I can show you how to swap your internal and external storage (SD cards). In my case, I started out with a 16GB GT-N7000 (International Note) and an 8GB Micro-SD card. I had apps installed on my internal SD card and would put all of my media (music, photos, videos) on my external storage (8GB Micro-SD card); but in the end, it wasn't enough. I ended up running out of space on my internal storage anyway; and considering that there's no way to replace the internal storage, I had to find another solution.
Now, on paper the Galaxy Note officially supports a maximum of 32GB of external storage. However, several sources have confirmed that the Galaxy Note (at least the GT-N7000 anyway) is capable of supporting Micro-SDXC cards of up to 64GB in size, and possibly even larger. However, no matter how large your external storage is, it's still your external storage. Now, if you were able to swap your internal and external storage, you'd have a fixed, 11.5GB external SD card that you would never be able to change, but you would also now have an internal SD card that you could increase or decrease in size whenever you like. In my case, I currently have a 32GB Samsung class 10 Micro-SD card that I bought on Amazon and configured to be my internal storage. Also, If I ever need more internal storage, all I have to do is purchase a larger card, copy all of the files from the old card to it, and insert it into my phone. It really is a great setup. If you're interested in trying this, just let me know and I'll post the necessary file(s) and instructions.
Also, it sounds to me like you are a former iPhone user. If you are, you should know that I am as well. As a matter of fact, it was the new iPhone 4S that I switched to Android from. At first, I found the transition to be..... less than smooth. However, with a little help from the good people here at XDA, I was able to not only make the transition, but also discover just how much more powerful Android is in comparison to iOS. In all fairness though, iOS is, for lack of a better term, the perfect "everyman" mobile OS. But if power, control, and versatility are your bag, Android is the way to go. So if you are in fact a recent iOS-to-Android convert, please let me know. I'd be happy to help show you the ropes.
Let me know if you'd like to swap your phone's internal and external storage; and also let me know if you've recently ditched iOS. In addition to the internal/external storage swap trick, there are a plethora of other tricks, hacks, mods, and techniques that can be used on Android to yield an almost infinite number of effects, changes, and improvements. Android is very tinker-friendly. So just let mw know how new you are to it, and I can show you all kinds of stuff.
Thank you,
Ed (Mister_Mxyzptlk)

Heck yeah, I would like to know! Yes, I was an iPhone user since 2007. A long as I don't need to root my phone out install a custom firmware, I would really like to know how to use my 32 micro sd card versus the ridiculous 11 GB the Note gives you to install apps and games. I barely had enough room to install Real racing 2.

Well, you will need to root your phone, but it's a completely reversible process. And if you do it correctly, you won't even trip the flash counter.
Anyway, we need to start with what build you're currently running. Could you check "Settings > About Phone" and let me know what build you're currently running. With any luck, it'll be a build that lets you use the ZergRush exploit. That way you won't have to downgrade your phone first.

I have the same doubt/need... I would love to learn more from your experience.
I am rooted and my build # is GINGERBREAD.XXKL7.
I don't mean to hijack this thread!
thanks in advance!
do you also repartition in the process of switching?
Same Problem
Mister_Mxyzptlk said:
Well, you will need to root your phone, but it's a completely reversible process. And if you do it correctly, you won't even trip the flash counter.
Anyway, we need to start with what build you're currently running. Could you check "Settings > About Phone" and let me know what build you're currently running. With any luck, it'll be a build that lets you use the ZergRush exploit. That way you won't have to downgrade your phone first.

Are you still able to provide info. REALLY WOULD APPRECIATE IT.
Thanks.

Root your phone, put the sd card in a card reader for your pc, make a second partition on your sd card (Fat32 oder Ext4), get the app Link2SD and your good to go.

Thanks, but I don't have card reader, can I use phone to partition sd card.
You can have a look at my signature
I used two apks I found on here. They literally swap memory. My SD shows as 64gig USB and acts like USB.

You can by connecting your device to a pc in mass storage mode and using a partitioning software. But it's kind of tricky. I tried several times to no avail so in the end I got myself a card reader. I recommend you to do the same, they are cheap nowadays. It's far more reliable than trying to do it with your phone.

SD Corruption in Xperia Z

Hi people
Reading loads of fora, it seems that Xperia Z has an SD issue;
https://forum.t-mobile.nl/sony-mobile-364/sd-card-corruptie-xperia-z-200853/

http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/46298/sony-xperia-z-corrupted-photos-lost-dir-micro-sd
Having contact with sony right now on Twitter but what i do want to know how many people have had this issue here.
This morning after unplugging from USB my second SD card also failed.
Luckily it was only 1 GB and not corrupted like my 32 GB last sunday.
Its hard for me to believe this is a software issue, because i used :
10.1.1.A.1.253 on sunday taking pictures when it failed, and not readable in PC or other phone
10.3.A.0.423 since yesterday this version when it failed this morning, but readable after putting it back into phone
Hope your willing to add your comments here so i can show this to Sony themselves
Thx in advance
well the 4.1.2 was in the fat32 format however the 4.2.2 wants a "exfat" but becarefull since this format is very weird because in not always working due to the fact that the master table very messy therefore it might asking for the deframenting often. so it can lock it self 0x....
So re format to exfat and everthing should will be fine and there should be no issues .

Did that already not readable , and lockswitch is like your image

Had a call to Sony Belgium, seems like its an issue they know about.
But they won't admit it right now or the lady I spoke didn't really know herself
She also said its a sofware issue. So in my case in two versions?
And Sandisk SD cards shouldn't have this problem.
Well one of my links provides an issue with Sandisk also.
So do yourself a favor and backup your SD card from time to time.

make sure you use other software such as this http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Free-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html
Well that is strange because oddly enough that's looks like to me that the controller in sd is dead
well i got 64gb sd sandisk extreme cost over £120 which is full of movies and other customs room but i do back every month. And it is still on warranty both
i was planing to unlock the boot loader today and i am not going to do so
I triest this program also nothing works.
I had luck with sdformatter on a dead 1 gb card nut not on my 32 gb

I don't know this phone but I know Linux in general.
More than once I observed that phones are too weak to manage bigger filesystems like 32 Gb SD.
Their android is not designed for this purpose.
Possibly programmers shortsightedness.
For myself after having SD corrupted I splited 32Gb for 3 partitions - 8+10+14 Gb.
One is mounted in default way, I formatter it as VFAT, remaining two I made ext4 and mount via init.d script under two mount points.
Much better since then.

If something is damaged - even miracles have limitations.
What remains is to avoid future losses.
Additionally - if it is hardware problem - you can do nothing but to replace.

Nice update after talking on twitter to a dutch member of XperiaNL
Translation;
Own hardware putting into a Phone is own risk
How stupid this sounds like????
An SD Card cant work without a powered Phone. So the power of the Phone causus the problems with the SD card.
So if you buy a Sony DVD player and you put a dvd into it and the dvd gets broken its your own fault.
What was the situation with Xbox right Microsoft admitted after a while their Xbox did the same thing, and offered repair or replacement.
Not accusing you or what but do you take out your SD card out often?
SD card are really sensitive, a tiny scratch on the back of the SD card can cause it to malfunction. It happened to my mom's SD card, accidentally scratched off something and the SD card became useless.

NO SD Reader in your pc? Any family who does?
Try that first use SDformatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ to recover your files
Got SD card corruptions right after upgrading to 4.2.2. On 4.1.2 there were no problems for about 3 months.
