[Q] Porting ROMS - LG Optimus Black

Can someone teach me how to port roms starting from the very basic ? I tried porting miui from nexus s using cm7 as base and using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598713 but failed . Can anyone out there who knows how to port roms teach me ?

None of the tutorial will help u in porting roms but you'll only get some idea about handling libs and modules.
You have to use your brain to port roms...

But i'm no developer , i dont know a single thing about development. How do i use my brain then, omr911
?

Logcat is used to detect errors in your rom. For example: you compiled a rom but it wont boot, you use logcat and find the bug and solve the problem hope ive helped

I don't know either but I'm in a similar situation as you. I can share my thoughts and the answer I gave myself to this question.
My current objective is to help LG optimus black ICS porting. What I've done so far is:
a) download and compile ice cream sandwich.
b) download cm7, I'm willing to compile and try it on my device. Starting on something that works will surely help learning.
at this point I'm going to study a little bit the CM7 code in order to get familiar with the files needed to port a rom. I'll try to apply my edits and attempt to solve bugs for cm7. After gaining confidence with the process I'll move to the porting ICS rom.
I want to give you some advice, you need to get familiar with the set of tools and the terminology that developers use:
1) learn to use Ubuntu Linux, it will greatly simplify development. Plus there is a lot of similarities with android, you will find that there are similar configuration files that you can edit in both systems
2) learn to code in some language (at least the basics). In this context (rom porting) I believe that the most useful language is C. But Java would be necessary.
3) learn to use version control (the git program) because it's what most developers use to share code in an easy manner. Remember, a developer(hacker) reads A LOT of code.
That said, it's a big investment in time, but I believe it will help you in life to know this stuff.

Ok if means its not easy as i thought..
And if u r also starting from beginning means with installing Linux dan tell me.
We can both wrk together on different phones and share what. We have got..

I'm a long time linux user I just told you what I employed in order to build android from source (and read some code in the way).
I wanted to inform you in some degree what you need (probably) to work with rom porting. What I've seen is that the entry-level for helping is quite high, plus there aren't many resources to study on, so you may need to start without rushing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_ReU-0w4IE
This video is about compiling and covers many steps (in a superficial way, though):
installing ubuntu linux, downloading the source code (with a version control tool) and building the source.
Try hacking your way!

Anyone tried to fix bugs on ics ??
Working as a team is better...just saying

But we don't have any source code...
But we need a custom oc/ov kernel.

Common guys we need more developers for our galaxy mini.. Its really jealous to see galaxy 5 to be ahead of our mini in terms of ROM making and other improvements.. For our device there is only one recognized developer tj_style.. We need more.. We need to make a group of some senior members and start some serious developing for our mini.. I would be contacting some senior members namely tj_style(obviously),parasmi,roofrider,r33p and many more.. Those who know some advanced editing and other stuffs plzz post on this thread that u r ready..

We can't port the MIUI ROM to our device without the source code.... And well it's closed-source and the MIUI team won't give the code. Asked already.... So MIUI is no go.... Tried without the code but since it is made for HDPI screens and our is LDPI so.... Doesn't even boot...

Yeah I read about that some days back.. But I also found that a group of developers tried to port miui ROM for galaxy 3.. But they left the project in between. But it seems that they made a huge progress in porting that..
Thanks for the invitation!! But, I don't think I am the suitable candidate for this..

I agree with Manphius... We should get the real talent on the road. If he agrees, maybe netask and he and few others who are actually good at linux and android can do it. I am a windows software developer --currently starting to develop apps for android-- and i know very less on linux and its command line.
Also, I don't have sufficient time as its need huge research to develop roms and moreover to learn linux from beginning is very hard. I have a dual boot with linux but use it rarely (one can say never too ). But, if you guyz are doing it I am ready to support you guyz and help to the extent I can.
Good Luck to you all!! But, I really don't have that much talent to develop a rom.

Can't you try porting the MIUI rom made for galaxy family devices such as galaxy s, galaxy 3, etc? I think it will easier since these device have similar characteristic and we might even be able to get the code of the ported MIUI rom....

Please, don't say something as "waiting" (everyone wait...)
This will boot up and it will work.... BUT we will never be able to get it stable. we couldnt even get android 3.0 stable let alone 4.0. its just not possible. why would everyone want a slow ass arm6 wildfire. if you want 4.0 buy a arm7 device with faster processor. will boot like i said and will work but the lag on it wud be extream and not to mention there are NO dev's working on 3.0 so my opinion is they will turn their noses up at that aswell
NO OFFENCE INTENDED JUST BEING HONIST WITH YOU ALL
The emulator image is compiled for ARMv7, so it won't boot on this device no matter what. I'd rather wait for the actual sources, than wasting time on a dead end.
It's not even certain yet that ICS will be able to run properly on the Wildfire. There's been some talk about dropping support for low memory and non-GPU devices in CM9. It really depends on how GPU/memory intensive ICS will be. We'll know more when sources are released.

Required knowledge for building and mod Samsung GT-i9000 kernel

Hi, I would like to know what I have to learn in order to mod the stock kernel of GT-i9000, which last version (linux version 2.6.35) was written for the use in Gingerbread 2.3.6. My intention is to make it work in ICS or Jelly Bean Custom Roms, and then start tweaking and experimenting, but I need the basics first
I'm talking about knowledge specific to the kernel since I know how to make C programs and the structure of the android stack (Watched this someone? It's great!). Where I have to go? Websites specialized in the matter, ebooks to read, docs... By the moment I have downloaded and installed the CodeSourcery toolkit Samsung tells to install in the README file.
I expect to not completely brick my only sgs phone, but anyway I would like to know how to do it
EDIT: I edited a bit my question since I though it wasn't clear enough what I already know.
No one can help me? I don't expect to have the whole story, just to know what I have to learn :/ May be I'm not in the right subforum for this question. Full noob here at XDA xD

Yup but is not because I though there was no kernel. I know there are a lot, Devil's, Semaphore... I just want to do it by myself
No,Good work.:banghead:

If you want to create a kernel for ics/jb, you should start with the default kernel of CM9/CM10, as most kernels for ics/jb are based on it. Then you could compare it to Semaphore, devil, ..., to see what they do differently.

Hello Pator57,
First I want to express my intentions with this post: I'm VERY glad that you have started to work on these ROM ports, and I'm only willing to help ya so that you can contribute more and more for the wildfire.
For me, a ROM presenting shouldn't be done in this way. First , lets start with the thread name-you should specify what actually is in this thread, is it a port/mod/build-from-source/etc, not only 'aokp update' for example, you should specify a date/version of the specific ROM , so that the users can keep an eye on the ROM since its almost certain that it will have some bugs , that should be fixed in new versions.
Later, in the thread its good not only to explain how and what you did it, but to put screen-shots/videos. To give details about the features, the ROM base and from where did you ported it, about the performance and some glitches. Plus that don't forget to include some disclaimer, so that you are not taking any responsibility for bricked phones, earthquakes or anything else. There can always be someone to point at you and claim that you bricked his precious phone. Detailed credits are also good to write, but you have made it so its OK.
Moreover, the actual zip of the ROM. Its not cool to name it 'aokp.zip' or 'miuiv4.zip'. I again think that including date/version is good, because when you make 3-4 different zips with bug fixes for example, personally i love to store more than a one version of the ROM I use and with these names it wouldn't be practical.
Of course one can rename it himself , or try the ROM to find out whats in,but(I think) these small suggestion would make you look more professional and reliable, just the way a developer/porter should look. This will give me personally convince in you, and that the things you do wont harm my phone. I hope noone will feel offended in any way. My intention as I said is only to help you, so that we can have one more ROM "producer" here. All what I wrote are personal views on how the things are done around here, its your choice whether to follow them!

I'm sure it shouldn't be called like this, because its a whole-ROM zip , and you tell that we should wipe everything when installing it,but whatever.Since its an 'update' of tathanhlam66's ROM , why do you make a whole new thread and not just continue what tathanhlam66 started ?
EDIT: Plus that , you have not edited both threads as I suggested you, which is making them BOTH look just funny. If you are not serious , and constantly state 'This is an update...blqblq', they will continue to look funny and futile!

As on the MIUI thread, is it possible to provide some more details on that? Screenshots, bug list?
It's quite tricky to flash a ROM without knowing the results..
There are no bug but if im wrong tell me like my miui port. But it report to doesn't boot so i will try to make it boot next weekend. And i don't need to ask permision aokp it's like miui it's an open software and no need screenshoot the rom it's an ics rom but only with some aokp option tweaks

Just Inform

As we knows guys, our device not getting firmware update from official, and we cant get stable firm/OS/ROM till now
Just inform to you all,,
All we need is new KERNEL for step up on developments, not new ROM or anything else
Even we get new lib,new bin for ROM,we will alwats get stuck without new KERNEL
Sorry I just say, cant doing anything
But I suggest to all, think about port/backport KERNEL,not port ROM
For me,its very useless if we always think for new ROM without new KERNEL
so,this topic minds is
ALL WE NEED FOR MOVE OUT AND STEP UP IS "NEW KERNEL" VERSION
Thanks,
Please read the title,I dont have mind to offense anyone

Tj_style was told me about kernel,,its very hard to port/backport kernel,so surely make new kernel is excellently hard
He said, our device is far from standard google architecture
Last time ago,,he planning to release Andro-id v3.3 RC4 with new baseband and kernel 2.6.35.14, unfortunately, his device getting brick and his development didn't complete yet,,new kernel still give issue on WiFi and GPS
Maybe we really need talk and ask help for hard kernel modder for this
As aben said,he also busy at this time and will help when he have free time
We can't step up if still on this
We need help from kernel modder/kernel devs

why not to just optimize current kernel with stable gingerbread rom?
want ics/jb features?
one of my friend's highly customized cm7 rom has it, not all, but most cool features. and ton of customization available. why not try it?
port it or build it from source.

Thats what I mean and force me downgrade my Mia to .32

whatever, just try to develop it yourself, truth is, that fix was available in various commit on various github that develop this device or other
about backport, check other Recognized Developer that try it at other device, are they suceeded, yet? so...

If some one can request Tj style to provide his kernel source to aben or CK and they can try to work out issues.
Bcoz 2.6.35.14 will help us to have many more roms for our device.
I tried few roms to port but failed due to kernel
Aben
Can you take lead on this to provide us stable 2.6.35.14 kernel . we can also try same kernel with wifi and GPS issue.Tj style has shared his source on github
you need to just build it
Requesting you to please help and build 1 version of 35.14 kernel for all of us
Arya
Can you request TJ STYLE to provide his kernel
EDIT : I am trying to port Cyanmobile from sometime but failed to boot it up also tried AURORA ICS on .35 kernel booting but getting into bootloop don't know what to do
If I not wrong,,Cyanmobile X is GB 2.3.8
Dont know what is mean with "2.3.8" as we know higher version GB is 2.3.7
Maybe, thats which make it cant boot
I was request TJ from some days ago,but he dont reply my PM till now,,I dont know why,,maybe you can also PM him
35.14 can take backport kernel 3.x.x architecture
I also saw kernel 2.6.66.7 on galaxy ace 4.2.1 alpha
Seriously,we totally need new kernel for continue ROM projects
My suggest,,try to build Cyanmobile X friends
I think, you need build new source for Cyanmobile,it cant boot if just porting

You got the point ArdX... I was tried with 3.0.xx months ago, but damn it's tooo many to change, it will took much time which I didn't have, so I dropped the project. I was thinking to modified .32 to make it faster, but l still like .35. May be later.
By the way, Vigo has .35 kernel officially. Any one has the source?

Friends I am here only, but remaining silent. Unfortunately while i was touring Delhi my dear MI 410 got broken and now i am stuck with galaxy ace s5830.
I think it is too late now. If we were able to raise the sum in time then randomblame would surely have helped us, he is a very good developer. Besides him i had asked to dzo, doomlord, lord clockan they also said that they are busy.
If you are still interested in the bounty idea, then i suggest you contact some developer (May be edowar) and ask him for help. As i have already informed that randomblame had turned down the proposal and tj_style did not reply, it is upto someone from you who has to take a lead. I can transfer the entire bounty amount to any senior member. Please advice before i start refunding by the next month for sure.
PS Thanks to everyone of this board particularly the devs/porters/modders/testers. I owe you more than what i can put in words.

Hi Aben. I don't know, may be next week am going to dissapear again due to entering busy mode again.

hi CK n aben. yeah, you have no life if doing that. lol
btw, can you two put your kernel source to the github? and device config maybe, GB based will be better. just want to try build cyanmobile. but cant test myself, so stable config+kernel can help me to fixing bug without device. hehe
@nayneshdev so,,are planning to repair your Mi-410?

It is a damage beyond repair, screen crushed, board broken into pieces even the sim crushed, a construction truck ran over it, i don't know how it got damaged that bad, previously it was touch enough to withstand many falls, must have been a very bad position.
Personally i think devs should concentrate on fixing the issues with the present kernel and tj_style for sure can fix the camera issue. So it would be better if someone asks to tj_style whether he is willing to do development if we provide him a device.
Hi ardx /aben/ CK
Tj style has shared his kernel 2.6.35.14 source on GIT Hub.
Can you guys built it for our device
Thanks in advance
