Hi all, I wanted to start a thread for beginners like me to not get confused from all the similar threads and to keep it clean for instructions that are related for basic setting up the phone.
It would be nice to keep the first post updated with data that are 100% correct for any region or provider based phone.
So, to get started with me, i have read through the threads for a couple of days but still have some questions that hopefully someone will answer.
1) SIM-Unlock
I recently got my Mini from my provider Telenor in Serbia, and the first thing for carrier based phones someone will probably want is to SIM-unlock them. You can check if your phone is locked by entering *#7465625# in the dialer pad.
The cleanest and fastest solution that works 100% so far is from this thread

I used the second method since I'm on OSX and have no way of installing Android SDK but can find a hex editor ("Hex Fiend" ) that works under OSX.
2) ROM-Upgrade
For people that have SIM-free phones the first step may be upgrading to newer ROM(and since Ginger is the favorite ROM my guess that I don't need to write any info for Froyo based devices), my suggestion is that you download Official ROM-s from sammobile.com because they are guaranteed 100% clean and you can also find carrier based ROM-s if you mess something up and want to take your phone for warranty reparation.

After the update it is recommended to do cache and data cleanup. And a hard reset by entering *2767*3855# in the dialer pad.
Go into restore mode(Power off your phone, hold Home and Power button), and when a menu comes up select "clear cache", and "clean data", select reset afterwards and wait for it to boot .
After this you are ready to go and explore Android OS
3) Install CWM
And that's it for people who want to just use their phone as an android device. But. If you want to get the maximum potential from your device custom ROM-s are a must. For flashing custom ROM-s you will need Clock Work Mod to be installed, which is described here

4) Custom ROM
Afterwards download the custom Rom of your choice from xda , the installation instructions may wary form ROM to ROM but they always are described in their threads( SO READ THEM CAREFULLY ), here

And here is where i stopper, and need further help from experienced people
My questions are:
1. After i installed the custom ROM, I need to repartition and reformat my sd-card to a different file system ex. ex-fat for faster performance using Clock Work Mod???
2. Do I have to do some zip-aligning and how???
3. How many partitions do i must have on my sd-card and what size/file system must they be??? ( i know one must be for swap, one for dalvik, and one to expand internal storage but I don't know how big and which file system).
4. I want to use a custom kernel for undervolting(no OC is needed) and thus i need to move the dalvik to sd card as far as I understood, is there a tutorial or is it intuitive from the app that is used to do this???

--> Two options:
-ClockWordMod Recovery.. CWM partitions the sd-ext in ext3 format. Also, swap can be partirioned here. Partitioning in CWM will reformat the whole sd card.
-If you want ext4 format, you can dowload Minitool Partition Wizard. I don't know if there is an OS X version though. If you can partition drives on OS X without 3rd party software, that's great.

--> I don't think you have to zip-align it yourself. Depends on the ROM I think, it's probably a feature.
3. How many partitions do i must have on my sd-card and what size/file system must they be??? ( i know one must be for swap, one for dalvik, and one to expand internal storage but I don't know how big and which file system).
--> You need:
sd-ext (ext3 or ext4) - partition used to expand internal memory
fat/fat32 - normal partition
swap - depends on the ROM, CM7 by squad supports swap.. emanon v3 does not since it uses s2e, no option for swap..
--> Depending on the number of apps that you are planning to install, sd-ext can be 512MB or 1GB or 2GB. Swap value deplends as well, 32MB to 128MB, I think. I have not come across an article on what's the best value for this.

--> did not find any.. not sure with other models.. for our mini, CM7 by squad has an undervolt option but not sure if it is working..

How to install/move apps to SD card after rooting my Galaxy ACE ??

I have rooted it successfully.
Now my big question is how to move/install apps to my SD rather then my phone memory..
I know this question is very frequent over here.. but am very noob here.. am not sure of which ROM am using..
So please let me know some ways to move it ? anyting can be done with the emulator?

whether apps2sd and link2sd, which one is da best?? i`m in stock rom and using cf-root b84.. what is the difference between them?

there is 2 thinks of moving app to sd. moving app to fat32 sd format which is simpler, and move app to ext sd format (as internal memory extention).
for moving app to fat32 sd card format is easy. use app2sd or link2sd. But some widget will not work. and not all app can be moved, only app that support app2sd.
for moving app to ext sd card format, you will need to make ext partition on the sd card. please google or search in the forum, how to make ext partition, many ways....
then after ext partition exist, you can use a2sd darktremor script + a2sdGUI, or S2E available in market.
note: S2E work simpler but only for CM rom.

AFAIK, S2E works only with CM based ROM. This guy is on stock.

Yes, I am still in stock ROM.. confused of which custom ROM to use.. I am waiting for a stable release of CyanogenMod..

I hope you know that your volume buttons are for moving up/down in CWM Recovery mode, Power Button to go back in previous menu and HOME button to apply the selection.
So,
Moving --> Volume Button
Select --> HOME
Go in previous menu --> Power button.
Now, Factory Reset means, it resets the current Installed ROM to its factory defaults. Meaning, It will erase all apps and your phone will be restored at the state like when you have bought the phone (for stock ROM) or you have just freshly installed a new custom ROM.
Wipe Cache Partition, clears the cache memory of ROM.
Now, dalvik files are the one which are made on application first run. For the default apps which comes with ROM by default, those app's dalvik cache will be generated on the First Boot.. This is the reason, why first boot after every custom ROM installation is slow. This dalvik-cache are generally have .dex or .deodex extension. Each app have it's own separated dalvik file. Now, by wiping this, means removing dalvik cache from OLD ROM before flashing a new one.

Dude, settings>applications>manage applications>select the app you want>move to SD.

Download LINK2SD from market,partition your SD card for EXT2 partition(There's a really old tutorial by ingbrzy in Ace section) .And you are done.Of course there are many ways to move apps to SD but i feel this one is the most convenient, however its your choice.

So, I want to stay on stock ROM, I will root my phone and put actual CWM5 recovery.
What should I do to put apps2sd and increase phone memory? (I can make ext2 partition on cwm recovery SD partitioning)
How can I move dalvik cache on new ext2 partition on my SD card?
Could someone explain to me exactly what to do?
I want to stay on stock ROM but also to have benefits of many apps on my phone.

Use link2sd if you're on stock rooted rom.
-backup your sd to your pc, cuz partitioning will format your sd card, wiping everything on it.
-partition. Using cwm from your phone or minitool partition wizard on your pc.
-install link2sd, create mount script to fat32, or ext2 (whatever works). Then reboot (keep trying other formats if one doesn't work)
-start linking apps. This will move them to sdext partition.

Im interested to know exactly what to do on the phone after making a fat32 partition. What steps and/or procedure? Im not an expert and I dont want to brick a phone or someting like that. But really need more space for apps!

I recommend you an ext partition and not Fat32 partition on your SD card ... I've a SD card of 16gb class 2, I partitioned my SD card with CWM Recovery and assigned to a partition of 2Gb app with swap 64Mb, for background app ... Now I have in my SGA 115 apps

I recently rooted my s3 mini to JB 4.1.2 by faria and i was wondering why i cant install any more apps as my ram is used up by all my apps. is there a way to clear/wipe all this data and start from scratch installations or any way i can move this huge game files in android/obb to another location in my sdcard to save space for app installations on my phone memory.
also, i have tried directory bind,app2sd, lind2sd and gl to sd(root) none of them seems to be installing or working for me as i still face the prob with installation of the same app.
kindly help.

Had this issue before. Try to reflash and reboot the phone.

Tried that, didnt work thanks for your quick reply tho. its been happening even before the 4.1.2 update. even when i had the 4.1.1 XXJL by avicohh rooted. any other suggestions?

Go into recovery maybe, and wipe cache from there, either that or factory reset your phone

Everything from ur last post was tried except for the downloading of the busy box. it wont even allow me to download it. it says insufficient storage. i cant proceed from there. i got the rest of it. i ran a chmod to 777 and instlled smanager . any help ?

Had the same error.
Simply wipe dalvik-cache and everything will work fine.

Remove a LOT of your apps. That should fix the storage problem until you get the script into /data.

try changing default install location. possible with normal device options, dont remember where. or else use app2sd to change it.
although i have the same error, when trying to install anything on extsdcard (with enough room on it), with faria rom v5.1.
with leatherface v2 i didnt have the problem if i remember correct.
update:
i still have the problem too.
wiped dalvik, factory reset multiple times, cleaned odin files, although faria rom is also using odex?
phone works fine, but i only have 4,5gb max internal (fused internal and sdcard).
and i cant install anything to external. i selected the options *install to: autoselect by android, internal, or external.
i tried it with more then one app, like rom toolbox pro.
i also noticed that chaning it it one app, correctly alters it in another.
i asked this in q&a, and i read what i can searching the whole forum. still i wuold really like to know:
-is 4,5 gb max combined/fused is normal for s3 mini +faria rom)?
-is it normal to have .obb partition completely empty, even having installed multipple apps?
its 402mb, totally free.
And i have other partitions also 402 mb, totally free.
-/cache partitions remains at 14mb, whatever happends, even after changing usage of cache heavier and lighter.
-cant install anything on extsdcard.
-/mnt/sdcard shows in that directory, with root explorer, as linked to sdcard0.
same in root:/sdcard (not sdcard0!) linked to -> sdcard0
but it has no apps in it. and only some folders.

did u used linked to sd?if yes you have to select default instal location to automatic...that solved my problem...the setting in link 2 sd....before this i select install to ext sd card and every time theres error insufficient memory...

no that is not what i mean exactly.
i do use link2sd now, to use my extsd 2nd partition. but it gives an error: installl_failed_insufficent storage.
even when i put it on auto.
when pressing create link, i get: i/o error.
what do you have selected to auto move to 2nd partition?
my primary question, has to do with the fused internal+sdcard phone memory (so not extsdcard), of faria firmware.
Phone sees the fused internal as,... internal memory.
and the phone sees my extsdcard as external sdcard.
i presumed the reason for this is to be able to install apps on ext sd too, by default. (so without link2sd or others).
because the problem as i see it is:
now i have less phone storage.
i still cannot install to external sd card.
i would really like to know
- what should be the benefits of this fused memory? why did faria do this?
- beacause now i have less or same memory, and no benefits.
-what i have to change in system mount, or fuse, to get back original non-fused.
- And/Or, how i can enable extsdcard to install to it too.

Have you tried with an ext4 partition on your external sd, for link2sd? I've read somewhere that it worked.
Otherwise Directorybind do work. I've binded the whole Android folder without any problems at all :good:

actually i do also had a the same problem with my cell phone as of yours... so i just wanna know if we had comeout with those problem.... please suggest me a solution too if you had solved those problem.

found a solution (maybe?)
I personally had the same problem right after flashing a new rom on my i9100. I read through the script amd it was quite literally just unmounting and mounting the sd card again. I wasn't sure how it could possibly be a simple matter of mounting the sd card but it worked so I'm okay with that.
If you're on 4.1.2 then you can probably manually unmount and mount the sd card by going into system settings, storage and scroll down to sd card for unmount. It'll take a short while to unmount and another to mount again and check for errors. Not sure if you have to do this will ever boot but it beats not ever installing anything, right?

[Q] Galaxy Ace S5830 can't open

Need some help please!
I already rooted my galaxy ace s5830. then i tried to update my android from gingerbread to jelly bean... but after i intalled the ROM, i guess it was sucessfull. but then after i rebooted it, my phone cannot open anymore. i also tried to connect it in my pc, but the pc cant detect it... what will i do? please help...

Can you boot into recovery mode? Try it.
If not, try to boot into download mode. If it works, flash the stock firmware using Odin.
Then you can install everything again.
That's how you should install a new ROM:
First off all you need CWM installed.
Then
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Format system
install zip from sd card (choose your zip etc.)
Reboot

actually, i still dont know how to do such things...
how can have CWM? do u have any link for it? and also, i cannot open my phone,either on pc. the pc dont read my phone using usb.
these are the things that i can see when i open my phone in recovery mode:
reboot syystem now
apply update from sdcard
wie data/factory reset
wipe cache patition
test redbend fota[FS]
these are the only zip files that i have.
UNROOT GALAXY ACE.zip
cm_ace-ota-eng.maclaw.beta1.zip
superuser.zip
please help...

If you don't have CWM installed on your phone, how did you try to install JB?
I hope that you didn't use ROM Manager, as this would be the VERY end of your phone: Hard-bricked.
To boot into recovery hold down the power and the home button until the Samsung logo appears for the second time. Try this and report whether it is working.

what CWM means? anyway, i already installed the ROM & CWM 5... is it ok if i did not backup my files? for i dont know how. but i already copied my files on my pc. so i guess it is ok.

CWM is an abbreviation for "ClockWork Mod". It is an alternative recovery tool.
Are you shure that you installed CWM 5? There should also be a "install zip from sdcard" option which is essential for flashing your phone.
So try flashing it again.
You didn't backup your files before flashing. Bad news.
I guess that you have just copied the files on your SD card. Now you won't be able to restore your apps and data. I'm sorry to tell you, but now you won't be able to restore your apps and data.
Flash CWM 5 again. The one in the linked thread.
Then flash the ROM again in the way I described.
Afterwards everything should be working.

thanks a lot! it worked!
But yes... indeed! its a bad news for me... i didnt recovered my apps even if i copied my files form my pc... i cant even access the files in my sd card using my phone... =( as of now, i can only use my phone in texting and calling. =( do u have any suggestions?

I don't think that you will be able to get your data back.
And your apps: They are stored in the .android_secure folder on the sd card or in the /data/app folder. At mount time the .android_secure folder isn't shown as it is mounted to /mnt/asec. That means that you will be able to access these files there on a rooted phone. However, both folders gets deleted during flashing.
For the future: Use backup apps like Titanium backup. There is also Carbon backup by one of the Cyanogenmod developers (Koush). It is easier to use, but it isn't compatible with Link2SD if you use that.
On the new android versions you can also backup using Google's backup function. However, you will have to install all manually apps again. Your data will be recovered on installation. I recommend Titanium backup. You can get it from Google Play.
Are you unable to access all files from your sd card? If so copy all your files to your computer, reboot into recovery and format the card using CWM 5. Copy the data back to the SD card.

here's what i did... i unbrick/recover my ace tru odin. now, i already backup my apps in titanium.
this is what i want to know. how can i restore my apps using titanium?

You can use the batch actions. It can either found using the menu that shows up in the options menu if you press the menu key or if you are on a newer ROM (4.xx) there is an icon in the action bar for that. The bad thing: You need the Pro version for that. However, it is really worth the money. It will save you a lot of time if you flash different ROMs often.
If you do not want to buy the pro key, you need to select the app and click restore. Do that for every single app. It is annoying. So support the dev if you have got the money.

actually i already have the titanium.apk on my sd card.. its just that i cant access the files in my sd card... there's no MY FILES apps in this new ROM. how will i see it? and also im not familiar with the action bar... where will i see it?

The action bar is that space where the app's icon and title are shown. There will be a icon for that, too (only if you are on Android 4.x).
You can download good file explorers from Google Play. I use Antek Explorer, but others are good as well. Use the one you like best.

im on android 4.2.2 already... but still, theres no action bar.. =(
i dont have any wifi here now so i cant download from google play...

There IS an ActionBar. It is shown when an app launches and shows its title and icon: http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/actionbar.html

Is CM11 so buggy? android.process.media has encountered a problem.

I have tried installing all kinds of KK ROMs over my CM10 but everyone gives the "android.process.media" has stopped. How do I fix this?
I have formated my internal SD card and everything. Every bit of old information was wiped clean before I installed these ROMS. Still no dice.

Try this
GB 2.3.6-> CF-root -> wipe & format system,cache,data,datadata,dalvik -> install C-Rom ( directly on 2.3.6 )
It should solve the problem.
( Other roms like CM11/CyanAosp should also work. If installation on 2.3.6 fails at CWM, delete the recovery folder from rom.zip and then flash )

Check whether the download manager is disabled... If yes then enable it... Even do a clear data of it...
You will find it at settings > apps > all
(if disabled it will be to the bottom of the list)
