[Q] Smaller onscreen keyboard? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'd like to get an smaller onscreen keyboard that doesn't take up half of the screen. This would allow me see more at a glance. Currently I hide/unhide the keyboard when I want to see more, but that is annoying because half the time when you unhide the keyboard, it covers up the part of the document you want to edit.
I've found SlideIT keyboard which lets you resize the keyboard, which is pretty cool.
It has a Swype like function as well as normal tap. The swype like functions works pretty well, but it doesn't seem as good as Swype in terms of picking the correct word. I think this is partially an accuracy thing (you have to be more accurate with SlideIt) and also there are quite a few common words that haven't been in the dictionary (but I've been adding them as they occur, so this should reduce over time).
Does anyone know of any other keyboards that aren't as big as the stock keyboard?
I'm in the 15 day trial of Slide IT, so if I don't find another, I'll probably end up getting this one.
thanks,
Rich

Thumb keyboard lets you alter the height and width, but no swype function. I've been using TK for almost 2 years. Developer is very responsive.

I believe swiftx keyboard allows you to change the height and width of keys

Thanks guys very helpful. Neither of those keyboards say that you can resize them in their market descriptions, which is why I didn't try them before.
I liked Swiftkey the best out of the 2. The word prediction is pretty amazing in Swiftkey. I could be incredibly sloppy with my typing and it still picked the right word most of the time.
It does require thumb typing to be fast though, and I realised that most of the time I hold my phone cradled in one hand and then use the other to swype or tap out words with 1 or 2 fingers or the SPen.
I like the word prediction of Swiftkey, but the input method and smaller keyboard size of SlideIT... I'll keep trying both of those for a bit longer before deciding...
Cheers,
Rich

Smart Keyboard is also an option. You can customize it in various ways. Among others you have the possibility to adapt the size of the keys and therefore the entire keyboard.

Thanks. I like that you can get Smart Keyboard to take up less screen space than Swiftkey.
But I think I like the word prediction on Swift Key better.
And I still think swiping is quicker for me, although the SlideIT keyboard is not as good as the Samsung Swype for word prediction and being lenient on how accurate your swipe path needs to be.

Unfortunately it can't be done on the stock roms or ones based off of the stock Rom. It's due to the nonstandard settings app they decided to include with the tablet. Some of the core API calls have been removed.
Slide It

I asked the same question regarding swype. I've tried it Slide It also and the keyboard is really big, but it's wide, which I like. Unfortunately, some screens will not bring the keyboard up because the height is too high. Shapewriter sizes the keyboard in the original size of a phone, it works and installs, but it's still very small. Ultra Keyboard has a similar problem, except it put the keyboard in the middle of the screen.
Slide It seems to the best option for now.

Using it right now as I write this, I'm using Zpad Clean .3 though.
I had the Droid 2 Multitouch KB working a few flashes back. Worked well but the letter/numbers were all tiny labels on large keys. Think I'm gonna try and "theme" it to look better on this larger screen.
Smart Keyboard Pro is working great. Love this one since you can make the keys bigger like the ipad.

Zpad rom. You can get the it from the market. I love this keyboard. I've been using it on the Evo for quite some time.
I'm using the regular android keyboard with the language in the space bar. I enabled english and Spanish in the settings. It seems to work but the dictionary never changes. In the settings it states that the dictionary is available! Is this a bug??
I am using tnt lite. With clockwork recovery .8
Thumb Keyboard has saved some hand cramps for me.
Thumb keyboard - what rom?
I'm on tnt-lite and while I can get Better Keyboard and other to show up using Root Explorer to drop the APK into system/app, but when I do that with thumb keyboard, I can select it but it just forces close every time.
Bought Thumb Keyboard, never looked back.
Thumb keyboard!
Any work around for getting thumb keyboard working on tnt lite?

Swiftkey tablet mode

Has anyone figured out how to get Swiftkey keyboard to work in tablet mode on the Gtab? Apparently it's the same app, but it auto-detects a Galaxy Tab and adjusts its layout for a tablet.
Is there a way to fool the app into using this layout on the Gtab. I, for one, really miss the text prediction in Swiftkey, but I can handle the squashed keys.
Edit: nevermind. The tablet layout is apparently not available yet.

If you are bored and want to try something new, give thumb keyboard a try. I have used it in both tablet and standard mode and both work well. Allows for full height adjustibility in both landscape and portrait modes and also has the predictive text.
I am actually using thumb keyboard, but I find that I'm so used to using SwiftKey on my N1, that I make more mistakes and expect the word prediction to fix. Or type slower and more carefully.
I love Thumb Keyboard. If I could make a Frankenstein monster of Thumb keyboard's layout and skin and SwiftKey's prediction I would.

Something else you can try depending on the size of your hands which works well for me: take thumb keyboard out of tablet mode and put it back into standard mode, then make the keys larger. I make very few mistakes this way and it much easier to hit the keys. Then again if you have smaller hands it may not work as well for you, but its something to try.

Keyboard lag

There is a slight delay switching from the letter keyboard to the numbers and signs keyboard. I would be texting and trying to put a ? But because I am typing to fast it appears as a k instead of a ?
Is anyone else having this problem?
Sent from my HTC One
I find the HTC keyboard also a bit laggy. But I switched back to the official paid version of Swype. No lags and better imho.
I tried Swype didn't really like it. Gonna try other keyboards. But the lag is gone from Swype but I don't like how the keyboard has a Swype key where the symbols key suppose to be. Also the vibrate on the Swype key is too intense compared to the HTC keyboard.

I use swift key for typing. Very accurate and better than stock. Don't like the design as much though. Also like it better than swype which I tried out for a bit.

I'm trying to use swift right now which is a lot better the swipe Imo. But I am used to traditional way of inserting symbols and numbers where the numbers were on top and symbols at the bottom two rows. Because I came from iPhone which I've been using for the past 3 years.
But this one gives a number pad with symbols on the right side of the keyboard. But I set so I don't have to hold down as long for symbols which is very good and I might stick to this keyboard. I feel it is a lot better then the stock keyboard. I feel I would be typing a lot faster once I get used to holding down keys for symbols and numbers.
But is there a way to add words to your dictionary? Cause tapping the word on the suggestions doesn't say added to dictionary.

Swipe or tap keyboard?

What style do you use to type on your phone?
I always swiped on my Nokia Lumia 520 Windows Phone, due to it's amazing swipe keyboard. I never found a keyboard on my 4in screen Android that matched it. On my note 4 clone with the large screen, I never found the need for a third party keyboard, not even swipe style.
So I was wondering, what is your preferred keyboard style?
I use swiftkey. It creeps me out how "it" can predict my words but super convenient.

I can type twice as fast with tapping than I can with swype.
I use Swiftkey and Hacker's Keyboard. Stock keyboard has never worked well for me.

Both taps and swipes end up looking similarly like smudges. This is a problem that we’ve especially had to deal with when designing our touchscreen keyboard, where tapping happens rapidly enough that accidental dragging of taps is inevitable. To top this all off, we also have to deal with:
a) differences between users
b) differences between one-handed/two-handed use
c) different environmental factors
I love swiftkey but I want a keyboard with copy and paste function in clash of clans.

Samsung Keyboard Alternate Characters Response

Anyone notice that the alternate characters on the Samsung keyboard is slow to respond? It works fine, I just find myself having to long press longer to get the alternate character. Causes me to make mistake quite often.
My Note 5 & Note 2 werenxt (<- see) this slow to respond. Anyway to remedy this? I've been comparing with my Note 5 & on the Note 8 itxs definitely slower to respond.
Yeah, it's pretty strange that Samsung doesn't include an option to adjust the response time like you can on third party keyboards. I'd suggest just trying out SwiftKey or others because it can definitely get annoying not getting the special key you want as fast as you want. Champagne problems, I know, but still. It's annoying, nonetheless.
EDIT: As you can see from the attached photo, SwiftKey (which I'm using) has this option but the stock Samsung keyboard does NOT offer it. Shame.
Yeah, same here. I like the Samsung keyboard because when apply a theme the keyboard is included. However, the special character problem plus the auto correct being so bad, I may have to switch.
Same here I like the Samsung keyboard because of it's features, the spen integration is the main one. Themes is also another.
I think I found a fix. Not sure if it's just in my head but it seems like it's ok now & I haven't made a mistake yet since the change. I disabled swipe to type. Well actually I changed it to cursor control, that's how I had it set on my N5. It makes sense as maybe the keyboard is sensing that you may be attemtping to swipe to type a word & causes the delay.
Now to fix my space bar issue but that's just me & my stubby thumb. I keep hitting letters or the period instead of the space bar. Same issue on my N5 & with the N8 being longer it's not helping in landscape mode. Tried changing the keyboard size but then all the letters are too far apart.

The short spacebar on Samsung keyboards is the ONLY reason I have always used Gboard. Shame Samsung never revised it yet.
Like yourself I always hit period instead of space.
