Overheating issues? - Motorola Droid 4

I just (10 min ago) went to check the time on my phone, and when I grabbed it, it was extremely hot. When I turned it over (I put it face down at night so the notification led doesn't bug me) it was showing the battery charging screen except it was a question mark. The phone was plugged in since 10 pm (its 5 am now) and when it had cooled down enough I turned it back on and it said I only had 50%, even though it had been charging all night. Has anyone else had similar overheating issues, and should I return it for a new phone?

Tried a hard reset? If ao, return the phone is what I would do. No way its supposed to drain that quick or heat up. Charging, navigating and playing music over BT and my phone is warm, not hot.

Had a similar issue about 3 weeks ago. Wasn't plugged in charging though. It was just sitting in my pocket. I thought it felt warm against my leg so I pulled it out and the phone was super hot! Turned the phone off immediately, let it cool down, and it hasn't done it since.

The other day I was charging (stock moto AC charger) my battery (40%) and downloading stuff via 4g and mine got to 46 degrees C. I slid open the keyboard and put it in a opening of a vent that was blowing 60 degree F air. 1 hr latter battery was 80% +/- and i dl'd more stuff.

You said there was a battery with a question mark. Was your phone booted up at this point, or were you in the 'battery charging mode'?
Sounds like the phone overheated, which can sometimes happen. You could try to get a replacement, but unless it happens consistently they might give you trouble trying to return it.

The annoying thing is, they say our batteries aren't supposed to be removed. It was nice being able to swap in a spare when my wife was done with her A855 moto Droid and same with having a "spare" incredible...
Anyone know the reason they made ours not come out?
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA

It is my understanding that they used a special type of battery to get it so thin. The downside to this special type of battery is that they are easily bendable, but explode when bent
As a result, they don't want anybody touching the battery and exploding themselves.
Somebody who is more knowledgeable in battery tech could probably give a better explanation.

Couple weeks ago I was using the GPS and had the phone on the Motorola cardock while plugged in (with a Verizon charger) to the car. Took the phone off to make a call and I literally couldn't touch it. I kept it on the side and opened the battery doctor app, told me the battery was 58C. Immediately pulled aside and turned off my phone. Stupid phone has the locked battery door also so I couldn't pull it off to let the battery cool faster. Worst battery door design by Motorola.

Fried battery?

I was using a wifi tether on my phone running PCForce's CM7 and my phone restarted (it was connected to my PC via USB) and when it came back on it said "Charging 0%" and whenever I unplug it it switches off, never seen this before but it seems, to me, like the battery has been fried anyone think the same.
I also have a spare battery that works fine, which also tells me that it is some problem with the battery, and running a wifi tether can heat things up a bit which brought me to that conclusion.
Anyone wanna throw any ideas on if its possible to fix it, I am now using the battery that came with the phone but it has a crack near the contacts which doesn't fill me with confidence.

try with 600 mHz it solved the problem for me
With mobile data and Wifi tethering enabled, my phone can get up to 52 degrees celsius in some cases without charging. I usually turn the phone off and take out the battery for a few minutes for it to cool down. I guess a temperature that high is caused by overclocking. I'm not sure if its damaging or not but I do prevent progression of operations in that temperature.
I also have a crack on the battery. Had it for a few months now and no problems so far
How 'cracked' is it?

I don't think the crack will be that much of a problem. If you want, you could take it to someone experienced just to be sure.

It shouldnt, but I like to be sure lol.
Also setting to 600MHz didn't help, guess i'm stuck with my stock one for now.
wow, good job. Yep, mine charges up to 100% before the crack. After that battery hardly charges up to 97-98%.
I have crack to, but battery go to 100. Btw, i glue mine with tape.

My battery cracked as well, but it has been dropped a few times...
It is a real shame because my previous LG phone was the LG Viewty and that was an amazingly well built phone. Cost ~£100 and came with an amazing camera and 3G front facing camera too. Shame it didn't have android. So I don't know why LG decided to go really cheap on the build qualities - you'd think having cracked batteries would have come up in their design tests but they probably didn't care...
I got the same trouble...

Hi guys.. tonight I was WiFi tethering my revo to my tablet while it was charging in my car. After 20 minutes, my phone rebooted. It was hot. REALLY hot!
After the reboot, my battery said that it was completely empty (it was 76% full when it rebooted) and shut down. Now it wont even charge when its plugged in, nor will it power up at least to do a reset.
I've tried pulling the battery, I've tried pulling the 4g sim card and powering it up that way, I've tried plugging it in without the battery and powering it up that way. Bottom line is that when you plug it in, it gets no juice now. Have any of you experienced this?
Is my revo officially dead? I'm on a stock rooted ZV7 vanilla build.
If this is a lost cause, I'm thinking that ill be getting the Nexus. Love this community! Sad i cant be a part of it by applying all the goodness that has come from this collective! Thank you for all that you have done to make the revo as great a tool as it was.

Happened to me, your phone is fine but the battery isn't. Check the white temperature indicator on the battery, if its red then your battery is fried. Temp indicator is by the terminals on the battery. Its supposed to be white with a red criss cross pattern on it. If yours is all red or pink then its done for.

It may have been...but the phone was affected. Got a new battery, plugged it into the wall charger, and the new battery was fried in 20 minutes.
I posted a separate thread with this question...but is it possible that an app can cause the phone to do this? My first instinct is to say no...but I find myself questioning that.

I don't think any app could possibly do that to a battery. Have you tried looking at the terminals on the phone to see if they're burnt up or anything? The first time it happened it was plugged in to a car charger, then the second time a wall plugin, right?

Yea, basically... In a nutshell, Verizon overnighted me a new Revo - Got it yesterday and I'm in the process of Rooting it again.. (thank god it came loaded with ZV7, but I would have just used the TOT file I guess)
Upon inspecting the old phone, I saw no evidence of scorching or burns.. The phone just got REEALY HOT.... The tech presumed that because of the heat and circumstances, it could have burned out the CPU. Hence the reason the phone isn't even turning on now.
In any case, I have a replacement, so I'll be staying with this fine community!
I appreciate all that you guys do here for this phone! Thank you for all the assistance!

I'm pretty sure that's for water damage.. Or is it for the battery in general or just does both?
I've had expedience with phone stores and when you bring a phone in they pop the back off and check the little thing on both the one on the battery and phone and if either one is solid they say its water damaged and deny you anything.
Can I get some clarification?
Same thing just happened to my phone a couple of days ago.
Battery indicator strip as well as the indicator on the phone are both still white with red X's.
My battery was at 8%, so I plugged it into the charger in my car - decided a couple of minutes later to put some music on, and the phone just shut itself off, never to return again ;_;
Easily could have been an overheating issue, as this phone gets hot VERY easily when doing ANYTHING while it is charging.
Are you using a case for your phone? I've got a body glove for mine and it doesn't overheat.

[Q] Droid 4 Battery Questions and answers

Picked up a droid 4 a couple months ago, the battery life always seemed crappy, but then again I run my phones hard (hotspot, etc) then one day it went down real quick, and wouldn't charge. Already did my homework so I knew the screws in back were the positive and negative terminals. Checked the voltage, it was way low, like 3 or lower. Busted out my B6 charger and was finally able to get the thing charged, but it drained retarded fast. Someone was selling a D4 w. the battery removed on craigslist for 60 bucks, so I snagged that, turns out the battery was severed at the cable so I still got no battery, but I Do have a spare D4, so I start troubleshooting. Turns out with my old D4, with any battery connected to it, would start draining at half an amp. Starting up it hit 1.25+ . at that rate the phone would be dead in 90 minutes. The Other droid was more reasonable, .6 or 7 at start up, and .2 baseline. I Ended up Modding the second D4 to run off a couple 18650's I had. IT works, and ran forever but I just snagged a couple LiPoly's that will shrink the case some. Anyone got any ideas why the original phone is draining batteries even when off? Anyone here swapped batteries on the things?
its a (suggested) non removable battery for a reason lol
yea because then they can make it xXX .XX MM Thinner, due to not having to ruggedize it at all (to prevent flexing). If they had put a decent one in there in the first place I never woulda removed it
Pictures of this mod? What are you using for casing? Which Li Poly did you go with? RAZR max batteries?
My wife came home today with her battery completely drained today and she is a light user. Ota ics causing this?

Red light of 'death'

Something that I read about happening on Nexus 4's but I never experienced... I got it on my N5 tonight though.
It's not a big deal, I was playing a game while charging the phone through a weedy charger (couldn't keep up with the drain). It seemed to have the effect of stopping the phone shutting down due to low battery. Rather than the proper shutdown it just outright died with a flashing read light.
Leaving it on charge for a bit fixed it, then everything was normal.
Just a PSA.

There were two different issues with the Nexus 4. The first, and the one I think you experienced on your N5, happened when the phone consumed more energy than the one provided by the charger, flashing a red light and shutting down until it received enough charge to power on again. It happened to me the second night: GPS, Waze and music while using a cheap low mA car charger. I switched to a Motorola SPN5400 charger and never had the problem again.
The other, the red light would stay on even after leaving the phone on the travel charger for a whole day. The phone would become completely unresponsive.

Randomly shuts down claiming battery at 0%

About a month ago while hiking I had my Mexus 6 in a zip lock hoping to keep it safe from water (I now realize how stupid that was). With ziplock in my backpack I waded through chest deep water. Later on I opened my bag and to my dismay there was water inside the zip lock. The phone was operational.
I took it home and tested it. Worked fine for the most part. However when I shut it down it would not bit back up for a day or so. And after charging it for 24+ hours it would randomly boot. Basically I couldn't let it run out of battery or it would be unresponsive for a day or two.
Somehow over time this issue was not valid anymore. My phone could now reboot normally.
A couple of days ago I noticed the phone going into shutdown claiming 0% battery even when battery was 40%. It kept galloping numerous times. Open the camera, phone shuts down showing it's out of battery. The battery saver also makes to kick in as it makes its come and the top and bottom bars turn red/orange.
This has happened more than 20 times now. I did not get the battery shutdown when phone has 80%+ battery. But it started as I dropped below that. At 48% it got so bad that after a shutdown, if I restarted phone, it would, then immediately shut down. When battery was 60%+ it would at least start back up and let me use it for a bit.
Now I know I messed up with the zip lock thing but it's there any thing I can do now? Should I try to change the battery? I have changed battery on iPhones before by myself.
Can I somehow calibrate the battery using software?
Attached are screenshots of my battery stats.
I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear this is happening, mine started doing the same thing after three months of use. I tried everything, including a trick someone posted of letting it die and charging it only using the quick charger. I use a QI charger and it was completely unacceptable to think that feature couldn't be used. So I contacted Motorola and they just did a warranty on mine and sent me a new one. I had it the next day.
