.nomedia not working after upgraded to ics - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Gallery still display pictures from the directory even though it has the file .nomedia.
I have cleared data from media and gallery, then reboot still has problem.

Just put a full stop in front of folder name
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Do you mean change the folder name? But this won't work right since some folders with default name such as "download"
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

I just rename folders I made like .picture and this will hide it from gallery. If you can't do it in default folders just move the items in your own folders.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Adding a file name .nomedia in the folder will prevent media scan for picture file in that folder, it is working in GB. After upgraded to ics it's not working.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Just make a new folder and put a fullstop infront. Copy your files into that. Simples
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

hmm, strange, same thing is happening with me, but only for newly added .nomedia files.
i have .nomedia files in loads of folders containing app specific pictures, and they don't appear in the gallery, but if i add a .nomedia file to one of my own folders it seems to be ignored by the default gallery, even though quickpic hides the folder as intended.
have you tried wiping the "media storage" data under application settings?

I have exactly same problem as your. After I cleared gallery and media data, only existing pictures are ignored. If I add new picture, gallery will show up again.
Did you perform factory reset after upgraded to ics?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

i've had ics since the german rom was released, and yes, i did a factory reset afterwards.
i have numerous folders with .nomedia files in them that are constantly being updated with new pictures by apps etc. and the gallery still ignores them, it only seems to be a folder that the gallery has already indexed, when i add a .nomedia file to it, the gallery still shows it.
just did a media storage wipe and the folder i put the .nomedia file into has disappeared as expected after a reboot.
moved another picture into the folder and checked again and it's still hidden from the gallery.

I think this is being caused by a change to the behaviour in ICS that triggers a media scan. I have an issue where just renaming a .nomedia file would trigger a media scan in gingerbread but does not in ICS, hence files in the folder are not shown in the gallery even though the .nomedia file is renamed.
I suspect this is the case here, that adding the new .nomedia does not trigger the media scan.

I am having the same problem, but with mp3 and wav files. I have many that are created by programs like Loopstack, Caustic and Audio Evolution that I don't want appearing in my music player.
What I found works, is if you create the .nomedia file on the phone.
Then connect the phone to a PC via MTP.
Rename the folder (I just add a 1 to the end).
Rename it back to the original folder name.
Disconnect the phone and it rescans and "recognises" the .nomedia file.
HTH,
Rich

I added the .nomedia file to my folder, wiped data from media storage (under applications), rebooted the phone and the files no longer appear in the Gallery.

This method only work for existing media file, subsequent new add media file will be shown up again.

.nomedia with images and music files
I think I've been able to solve this somewhat.... For those who have an audio file and an image(in your music folder) and you don't want the image showing up in the gallery but you do want it showing in your music directory(album art), you will need to go into the folder with the picture-create a folder(i call it 'pic')-put the image in that folder along with a '.nomedia'. Make sure that the music file is not in the new folder but the new folder is within the overall folder.... Confused? Music/U2/The Joshua Tree/Pic/Image and .nomedia file - Hope this helps
you can see images here:
androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/595398-nomedia-your-music-images-showing-gallery
It still shows your image with the music\artist in the media player, but now doesn't show in the gallery. You do not need to rename the music folder(like you would if you were just adding a .nomedia file) because your adding a new folder all together.

just clear cache as someone said and reboot phone.. good enough to have the .nomedia work with existing photos.. As mentioned when you add more you will have to do it again.

How to create the ".nomedia" file....

I might be missing something really obvious here, but how are you supposed to create the .nomedia file so that the music player won't see files from system folders? I have a whole bunch of mp3's appearing in my music player because of Real Football 2010. If I try and create the file on Windows 7, it says "You must type a filename". Any help?

Open notepad, rename file ".nomedia" and change the file type from txt to "all files". Try again, report back.
rename it on the phone
Easier way is to create a folder directly inside the one that has the music files (did this on letsgolf it has tons of sounds) just tap create folder and name it .nomedia works for me.
Creating .nomedia folder in windows 7 solution
1. Goto command prompt : Run->cmd
2. Goto your flash drive e.g. F:
3. Goto you desire folder e.g. CD gameloft
4. type "copy con .nomedia" and press enter
5. press F6 and press enter.
This will create the .nomedia file in windows.
Old thread but here is a no Computer needed option:
Download ES File explorer (its free)
Install and open it
Navigate to the folder you want to exclude (remember it propagates down e.g. if you place it in the root of SD then the whole of SD is excluded including all the sub-folders)
Press Menu and select "new"
Select "File"
Call it .nomedia
Rescan your memory Cards
Sorted no PC required
thanks all above

Does creating a .nomedia file in a folder also stops it from scanning lower folders?
Ex.
\Mystuff
\Mystuff\lotsofstuff
\Mystuff\lotsofstuff\pics
Will putting it in \Mystuff stop it from scanning the lower folders?

I have created a ".nomedia" file but the pictures in that folder still shows up in the gallery.. Anyone have similar experience?
Using SE Xperia Arc.
Restart ur phone so that media scanner runs once...
Gallery excluder is another app from the market you can use, even to restart the media scan afterwards to apply the changes.

You can open notepad via Windows->notepad and ctrl+S to save it (with blank content), in the "File name" field, you type ".nomedia" and in the "save as Type" field, you chose "All files (*.*))"
Good luck!:good:
No need to create file or using an application
You don't need to find a way to create that file. Connect your mobile to pc by USB and browse in your sdcard. Enable show hidden or system files from your operating systems file explorer. Find a .nomedia file and copy it to the new location you want. This is more practical. Also if you have a root explorer on your Android, you don't even need a pc.
AW: How to create the ".nomedia" file....
Another way doing this (imo the best):
1. Open terminal emulator and navigate to the folder
2. Type: touch .nomedia
3. Done

I'm confused. Are you saying it didn't see media before and after the file was in the directory? Did you restart?

[Q] Just a quick question

Hi, when you go into the "media" folder on your tab, is it possible to add more folders there then the stock photo, video, download?
Yes, its possible
And how do you do it?
Use the stock file manager "my files", or download astro file manager or efile from the market.
or use your pc/mac via usb
Using your tab only, click "my files" icon and navigate from there to wherever you want to place your new folder. Then use the context button to reveal the new folder menu, as well as rename and details options.
by the way, you might also be interested in a better media browser than the stock, use quickpic from android market.
also, if you add a blank file (usually a txt file) named .nomedia at the root of a folder which contains some files, the files won't get picked up by the media scanner and stay hidden, but will still be seen by file explorer like My Files.

Hide media problem.

I was told to make ".nomedia" file to hide unwanted music files. Problem is, that i placed it on my usb-memory root and now my photos etc. are hide. This was so noobish thing to do, i was too tired that i didn't think.
Problem is, that i don't see ".nomedia" file, so i could remove it. Can you guys give me a hint, how to solve this problem?
Edit:
I found the solution. I had to select "show hidden files" from es file explorer and that way i founded ".nomedia" file. I removed it and rebooted my Note and everything is back to normal.
Can you guys tell me how .nomedia file works? Do i put it in all those folders that i don't want my musicplayer to find or what?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Yup
Also another solution would be to set up a folder with those unwanted media files and put .nomedia there, more organised IMHO
Unless they are games files of course then you have to put the .nomedia file in respective folders

Try deleting the cache from the Media Storage app and rebooting. Alternatively you can download any number of apps from Google Play to hide files and folders.

[Q] new zoe Zoe themes help on 4.2.2

I figure out the root to the problem some people are having with new 4.2.2 zoe themes giving them the error :
"unable to create video because there is a problem with the original media files"
The audio files that zoe uses for some random reason are messed up for the new themes. They have a file size of 9 bytes when there are normally 1.05 mb. So i replaced music_atlantis.mp3 (one of the new themes) with another mp3 files that also lasted 32 seconds, and changed the name of it music_atlantis.mp3 . When i went to zoe the theme worked but of course with a different audio.
If one of you guys that have all themes working could be kind to upload those audio files it would be great I'm sure I am not the only one having that problem.
this is the location : /sdcard/Android/data/com.htczeroediting/files/zeroeditor/resources/music
I uploaded two screenshots one with the error and the other with the files i believe need to be overwritten with the correct ones. Thanks
Hi, go into the 'Android/Data/com.htc.zeroediting/files/zero_editor/resources/' folder and rename the 'music' folder to something different and then try the new highlights again and it will recreate a new music folder with all the new highlights working, then you can go back and delete the old music folder.

worked like a charm!!! thanks
beautiful fix... now I don't really want to erase my entire SD card anymore... lol Moved everything else over so it should be fine... hopefully lol
When I change the name of the music folder, it does create anther folder titled "music", but still has the same corrupt .mp3 files in it. Only six of the files work, the others are 9 or 10 bytes.
I'm on 4.1.2, and these files seem to be included also.
I actually landed here after tracking down a mediaserver wakelock issue I'm having. Turns out the .mp3s being used for highlights might be the culprit, but I can't seem to fix them or delete them without them being recreated when I watch a highlight reel. Even if I just delete the corrupt files, they are recreated when I load a highlight reel up.
I'll upload the folder that I have for music just overwrite it and see if it helps

there are the audio files that should be inside that music folder. just download them all and save them inside that folder so you overwrite the others. By the way these include the audio files for the new themes as well in case anyone else needs them.

Thanks for the help. It looks like a few of the files you provided are still not the right size (music_brooksburg.mp3, music_fields.mp3, and music_monterey.mp3).
I copied it all over regardless, but there's still only six options showing up in the highlight reel (Polaris, Avalon, Vega, Eifel, Burbia, Islandia). Maybe the option will only appear in 4.2.2?
I checked the files after using the highlight reel and the system didn't change any of the mp3's I copied over, so there's that.
I'm more concerned with getting the files right to help with wakelock, even though I'm not sure this is culprit.
Yea the new themes you'll need 4.2.2 . And yes those 3 are still only 9bytes . But they are not themes so they are not used therefor they shouldnt be giving you problems

Has anybody created custom themes yet? Wondering if there is a forum/thread dedicated to custom highlight videos. It'd be great to have a community of themes/music to share to add a little variety to the HTC One's highlight videos.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Highlights worked--I think???--before activating my phone. But once the Carrier package was installed (Sprint) this feature only had the hangouts "Pop" file.
I had written to a friend who reviewed the One for PC Magazine and HTC but never got any response for getting these files. I really appreciate this rollsrd!

I tried the renaming Music folder trick. It did not work until I shutdown gallery and then reopened. Probably obvious, but just thought I'd mention it.
Renaming the folder did the trick for me also.
