[Q & A] Ask ask your questions here !! - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
I was planning to buy the Samsung Galaxy S Advance as my second phone, it has an dual core 1 Ghz ST-Ericsson U8500 CPU with a Mali 400 GPU from ARM with 768 MB of RAM. and other similar features like the S plus.
According to the stericsson website the U8500 chip supports 1080p video recording but on the gsmarena specs it shows 720p with 30fps (maybe someday could unlock the full hd feature )
The main reason i posted this thread was to ask about it's GPU performance, as it includes the same GPU from the S2.
Will the performance be the same as the S2 ? or somewhere around that ?
And what about the U8500's performance ?

Another Question
Are Dual cores really fast compared to a single core
I own a S plus which has a Qualcomm msm8255t 1.4 Ghz single core cpu, which i find quite fast, it runs CM9 very smoothly.

I'm also considering this phone, and I hope you don't mind I through in another question: is it true what they say that with this being "an upgrade to the Galaxy S" and only available on limited markets we don't have to expect much development and selection in custom ROMs?
I am considering either this, or a Motorola Atrix 4G and I really don't know what to choose...

I actually like it's design, it's somewhat like a mix between the S2 and Galaxy Nexus, more like a baby Nexus.
anyways this phone has great potential as it beats the galaxy R (see benchmarks at gsmarena)

I don't think that it'll get much attention by devs. It's not that the phone's slow, but there won't be as many users as other Galaxy S phones have. You can see what happened to S Plus: it's faster than the Galaxy S, but not even supported by Cyanogenmod, with a very small community. The simple reason why the Galaxy S has more users now than the advanced one will ever have, is that the S once was the best phone out and many people bought it. The Plus and Advanced aren't. They get 1/2 cores when already 2/4 are standard.

LOL i just bought the device it's real smooth was playing some hd games and the performance is really good, the mali 400mp is doing its job just fine and multitasking is pretty good
I don't know about Germany but this device seems to be getting quite popular here in India

A friend got it... but he's Android noob .

I just looked on amazon - for 40€ more you get the S2. IMO it would be the better choice. More RAM, faster, awesome cam. Why didn't you buy it?

I will rather buy S2. I learn my lesson with i9001.

In Croatia "S Advance" is on T-Mobile more than 200£ cheaper SII, therefor I don't see a reason not to buy it, except that it probably will not get much attention from developers.

there's quite a big difference in the price between the advance and the S2, so i chose the Advance over the S2. (and also i liked its nexus like curve, the curved display looks really cool)
Anyways the phone is performing well, for the first time i could play GTA 3 (v1.3) with full graphics without any lags.
and now have started enjoying gaming.
I don't regret buying this phone, maybe when samsung releases ics for the phone it will perform similar to the S2

Nah, if you get past 300€, 40€ aren't a big difference. With the S2, you can replace your cam with the phone, with Advanced you can't take usefull pics. And just look at the awesome dev support. I think Sammy only released the Advanced because of the big critic, that none of the Galaxy S devices gets ICS. Now they can say 'upgrade to advanced' and make money with their bad support. But in the end it's your decision .

I know S2 is a better device but i still liked the look of the Advance, and was quite curious about the new NovaThor chipset
and btw there ain't no news of ICS for the galaxy Advance (I'm starting to worry now )
The phone seems to have some very nice motion controls (like when you double tap on the top of the phone it activates voice search, and the tilt to zoom function)

I'm confused between s advanced and Xperia arc S (both of them at same price ) but i'm scared to get s advance duo to lake of support/deve so what do u think about that nail16??

Xperia Arc S has the same configuration as the galaxy s plus so it's a single core device and has a adreno 205 (the gpu kinda sucks)
I say go for the Advance don't worry about the dev support, it seems to be a powerful phone it will soon be recognized by the devs

Ihope so =D

Theres No XDA support for the phone. So its a big no actually !!
In india also its not that famous :O..!!

Great phone,
you can buy it closed eyes

Should I swap my Desire HD with a Galaxy S?

Hello fellow XDA'ers,
I've had my Desire HD for about 10 months & although it's perfectly fine and indeed excellent, apart from the below average battery, I just got bored.
So, a friend of mine has a SGS & I am thinking of swapping with him...
1)Will I notice the RAM difference?
2)Does the pentail screen bother much?
3)How's the sense rom on the SGS?
So what are your thoughts? Did any one convert from a DHD to SGS?
Thank you.
Dont do it! I came from galaxy s to dhd......dhd feels snappier nd much better screen. Plus the sense interface on the dhd is much better than the stupid touchwiz bull**** of the sgs.....wait until u see the browser resolution as well! Horrible....wait.....did i mention samsung's kies software? Well it suckssssss......thats when it really identifies ur phone....although i lost arnd 300$ sellng the sgs nd gettng the dhd.....im not sorry i got rid of that thng
For me SGS is much better than DHD... My gs still perfect even if it is dropped while in mine DHD there are no levers of the volume because were detached.
Perhaps you'll notice that the ram is less but this minority will be satisfied by the fantastic display Super Amoled! The GS also while having 3 megapixel less than camera of dhd take best pictures and video runs much more fluid and detailed ... Just watch it on youtube... Then gs is much more customizable in terms of hacks.
So... Make your choice...
Yeah.
Sgs is a great phone. Borrow your mates for a few days and see.

I think if you want a phone in such a range you can wait a 2-3 months as samsung is going to launch galaxy w on September 1 Berlin event it will have a 1.4 ghz single core processsor and 3.7 inch screen! If u can't wait for it thrnvuo for galaxy s as it is the best in its price range!

Well it depends on the rest of the specs too.
on topic, I love my sgs. The kernels, roms, upgrades, mods, it's a lot of fun to learn about and make as good as possible. I wouldn't trade it for much else. Try out your friends phone and imagine how good it could be.

Thanks for the reply guys!
The DHD is perfect, but I just got bored and want to try something new.
And I can't buy a new phone, so I am thinking of swapping it....
Guess I'll swap, & maybe we'll re-swap in 4 months again

That kind of depends on what you're looking for in a phone. I have a Galaxy S, and I'm very happy with it. However, it's now been replaced by the "Galaxy SII", which is probably considered "nicer" by most people (slightly better screen, faster dual-core CPU, etc, etc). The SII will be more expensive, so that may be a factor for you.
If you want a phone that just works, can play .mp3 files and games, and has good screen and memory as standard, then the Galaxy S will do all that and more.
Thanks for your reply.... i was more interested in is it a good phone to root and does it have many stable costum roms

Yes; very easy to root; has a wide choice of custom roms; is "officially" supported by CM7; and the community is working very hard to port ICS to this phone. Also very hard to "permanently" break from a custom-rom point of view - "download mode" means almost any other problem is fixable.
I got one more question before i buy it..... which one is best galaxy s plus or galaxy s
There are a lot more ROMs out there for the SGS compared to the SGS+, although some/most (not sure about this...) will work on both phones..
I don't have any experience with the SGS+, but if you're looking for ease of rooting and ROM choice, I'd go for the standard SGS

Thats true. So i would also say I9000.
galaxy s
I have an option to buy my friends galaxy s which is used for a year in good condition. The i9000 is discontinued in india for some reason, and worse phones like the galaxy s plus and lcd are introduced. I just wanna know if its worth buying the galaxy s now or should i wait for the galaxy s advance so i'm more upto date on the technology? Personally i feel the i9000 was a phone ahead of its time when it was released it still can beat any 2011 single core 1ghz phone and the sgx540 is used in the galaxy nexus too so it must be a pretty good gpu. I just need your opinion on this. Thanks
Both S and S+ are great phones.
If you prefer lots of custom roms then you can go on SGS, but if you like faster cpu (can be overclocked at 2 ghz) and stronger battery life like me, then SGS+ is obvious choice at similar price range.
But don't you think if we use the sgs+ battery in the sgs and overclock it to 1.4ghz,the hummingbird would perform better than a scorpion running at 2ghz? I'm talking about overall performance which is including the processor and gpu.
Am not sure about that.
Adreno 205 is very good gpu used also in Xperia Play for example.
Together with 2ghz processor is still better solution for me.
I found this comparision test between two gpus:
http://www.grandmax.net/2010/10/adreno-205-vs-powervr-sgx540-mobile-gpu.html
Thats an old comparison between android 2.1 and 2.2 obviously there will be a big difference, according to the latest benchmarks the gpu's rank as mali400-adreno220-sgx540-geforce-adreno205.
Can you provide a link with those latest benchmarks, i like to read it.
Thanks.

After reading this thread my conclusion and answer to your original question remained the same.
These two phones are very similar to the overall strength and the only difference is in relation to the CPU/GPU.
However i9000 is discontinued and is more logical for me, to purchase a new model as his closest successor.
My feeling is the galaxy s if you are after adding custom roms to your phone. The community is massive. Personally I don't think the other phone will compare. Remember the S2 has actually replaced the galaxy s. I say this as the S was samsungs frontline phone at the time. All others are rehashed s phones aimed at a different market segment. If you are going to get a new phone i would go for the s2 or possible wait for s3. If you need it now i would get s
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
Yea i think i'll go for the S itself, S2 is way too expensive, the price hasn't fallen since its launch a year back nd besides i'm gettin the s for 1/3 the price of the s2 . But any idea how much will the s advance cost? If its somewhere close to she s2 itself then there's no use of waiting for it.

Bcoz of such lack of education many people hard bricked their S+ , no roms from s work on s+ , it's a totally different hardware, bootloader partitions etc..
As for those who commented the gpu, according to all benchmarks there is no big difference between adreno 205 (with updated drivers) and sgx.

Worthy Successor for sgs+?

Hey all
I'm looking for a replacement for my phone as I'm frustrated by it. I have done some research and the phones which I'm leaning towards are the Nexus 4, Optimus G & Droid DNA. (I don't live in the States but I'm going there on holiday now, so I think the DNA is out unless an international variant is coming out soon) I have a maximum budget of $500.
Thanks I really appreciate your advice.
Sent from my GT-I9001
Those are great devices.
I would add SGS3 also to the list.
Galaxy Nexus is good too.
SGS2,for example, is still good choice if you want cheaper.
You need to ask yourself some questions like : What will the new phone allow me to do that I can't do now? Will I play graphic intense games that require quad core?
I asked myself these questions and more after every new phone that was released after the origonal SGSI. I didn't upgrade until the Note 2 came out. There was no need as far as I was concerned. My passion is photo and photo retouching!
What do you do most with your phone? It may be worth saving up for something you won't be disappointed with after two months.
Thanks for the replies
Well I manly use my phone for socializing, media and my main means of using the Internet. I occasionally play games and I'm very much a power user.
^^ I thought about the sgs3 and while it's not as powerful as the Optimus G it is significantly cheaper, but then it starts to fall in the Nexus' price range which gives more bang for the buck imho. As for the others I think the Nexus 4 also out performs them.

Why are u frustated, I love my SGS+, with SmoothieICS or SmoothieJB ROM it is fastest ever !!!
It just is so unreliable. It freezes everyday at least twice if not more and it so so laggy all the time Our phone also has extremely little dev support. I have run quite a few roms (Cranium back in the day, Moonrom, Ivendors and Acro's CM9.) and kernels (Cranium 2ghz, Vitality, Skyhigh and CastangaIT) on my phone heck I have even tried numerous scripts (Thunderbolt, Adrenaline, V6 and geeky engine (lol)) but still it always suffers from the above.
tl;dr I just want a working Android phone

[Q] Which mobile you recommend?

Just going to buy new mobile in same range or a bit upper range. Any suggestions?
Your thread should be Q&A...
Anyway I would recommend you any Nexus, regardless of brands, all Nexus phones recieve the same treatment, which is, at least 2 future major updates.
Buy the Nexus which match your price tag, specs, and design
Presonally if I had a low budget, I would get Samsung Galaxy Nexus, for me it's the phone with the sexiest design lol xD even if it's dual-core I don't care about cores as long as it's more than one.
Note that the phone is now "old" it might be possible that it doesn't recieve the next update (after J, K)
Or else, the LG Nexus 4 is very good as well!
Or, you could wait for the next Nexus!

Very good advices...though not useful
Observing your specs, I would recommend you a Samsung Galaxy SII.For the money you spend, you'll have a great phone.
you should give us a price range
look out for new dual cores which are coming out
why not the cheaper nexus btw?
Right about Nexus but in KSA, people have very less coice as shop stick with iphone or samsung 2/3 or few HTC. I am also considering 3D max just to experience sth new.
well i had an optimus 3D and sold it
software support was bad (not 3D max though) you will need time to adjust to the less attractive screen when not in 3D but the 3D effects are awesome
especially in movies!
for the Same range, you can get some good cells. I would suggest you to look at the following:
1. GALAXY NEXUS -- sits in this range and is the BIGGEST BANG FOR BUCK. SAMOLED 720p curved glass display and a nexus pedigree kills all competition. as a GREAT dev support here
2. OPTIMUS L9 - it is one looker of a cell. has 1GB RAM qHD 4.7" display and 1080p encoding. I have seen the cell in person. it's awesome.
3. GALAXY S II - The Display resolution is low. :\ though the DEV support is awesome. for the specs, we all know that. lolz
4. GALAXY S ADVANCE/ S3 MINI - Advance is my current cell. both of these are fairly good and balanced device, but not really a "good upgrade" over the Optimus Black. also, the RAM of S3 mini is 1 GB whereas of SGS Advance is 768 MB
5. NONE OF THE XPERIAs ARE GOOD (EXCEPT THE XPERIA S - still out of the mid range tag)
6. NEXUS 4 - being in India, I cannot say about it. here it costs as much as the S3 or the Optimus G or the One X.
7. HTC ONE S - i LOVE this device. but no card clot is a letdown.
hope this helps you a bit.
regards,
achyut.
P.S. -- if I were you, I would have seen the GALAXY NEXUS first and then taken my turn on the Optimus L9.

Very small 4X HD community

Hey guys,
I think about buying the 4x HD. But know in see that theres a very small community for this phone. Isn't it as good as i heard or what? I know this phone for a while now and it's not Brand new anymore (i think), so it can't be the reaon. But why are here so few devs and ROMs?
And my last question: is there a Chance of getting an unlocked bootloader some day?
I really need a New phone now, cause now i stuck with my Galaxy S Plus for 2 years now

I came from having a Galaxy S and yes, the community is much smaller than of the almighty phone of ours, but the device itself has been so underrated. Except for minor hiccups, IMO the phone is great. I was lucky enough to get it now, when the bootloader has been unlocked and Jelly Bean is around the corner.

Yeah, CM is great! But don't worry - the firmwares LG is rolling out are great too! Clean menus, added functionality and very customisable. They should just fix the occasional lag and the Tegra drivers. Some games have a low frame rate, while on other Tegra 3 devices they run smoothly.

Welcome to our forum .
About games lags it is not a problem with phone ... as you can see the THD games are running very smoothly (Riptide gb , shadowgun ...etc ) while some others are lagging . This is a problem with game compatibility . So if you see the benchmark scores it nearly has the same as SGS3 . Personally my phone beats the SGS3 (With tweaks and MODs) in the benchmark , it got a higher score (about 1300 in the old Antutu (2.9.x) while SGS3 about 12xx) .
About the Devs ,, this is a new phone ,, every new phone will get a little Devs until it be become old .
About bootloaders ,, now we have an unlocked bootloaders (see the JB updates info and CWM Recovery thread)
Personally I bought this phone because it is the cheapest Quad-core phone in my country and I see it as an Excellent phone with its low price .

What you call flawless (Adreno 205 - I also had Incredible 2), somebody in now days calls a joke...
My recommendation for you is, if you are completely satisfied with SGS+, stick to it and upgrade only when you feel dissatisfaction...

I'm not completly satisfied anymore. I really want i bigger screen, better camera (even if its here not much better as i red) and also my phone laggs with to many open tasks caused by low RAM.
I really like my S+ and toke much work on it (raised the antutu score from the beginning(3500) up to now(6800)), but it's not uptodate anymore i really love the exitement of a New phone.
I also want to have a LG cause i really love the UI (got launcher and Theme on CM10 )
And i CAN play flawless, if i take my bigMEM (398mb of RAM), OC to 1824, clean RAM and taking gpu libs from galaxy w before playin'

Small community doesn't equal small amount of development or community support. In other sections there are also only ~20 active members, but there's also tons of noobs asking "which is the best rom" or "did i brick my phone" or "help me unlock i can't root" and stuff. There's four active devs around (IIRC), and dexter alone has made more stuff possible here than many devs on other sections. Now the bootloader is unlocked, we'll just have to wait for compiled roms and for LG to publish their sources, which should be in a few days. Then kholk can finish his kernel and we'll hopefully have a fully working CM10.1.

I just can compair the 4x HD with my SGS+, cause it was my first and only smartphone (beside my samsung wave, but that wasn't with Android), and there where actually a pretty huge community and devs after this period of time.
And i decided to by this phone now. But now i got one question left:
Which COLOUR should i take? I like the black one but the white one looks also pretty cool (haven't seen both in reallife, that why i'm askin)
And THANKS for all replys, i think its a good start for the phone for me.
Cheers
