Gorilla glass SUCKS... my screen is scratched!!!

I didnt buy a screen shield because i was told the droid/milestone use gorilla glass which makes it almost impossible to scratch the screen , boy i was WRONG, my milestone has like 4 scratches, two are just visible when the screen is off so its ok , but the other two are VERY VISIBLE, they're almost staring me , when i use apps with white backgrounds such as the messaging app and the browser the scratches "leak light" , i've become obsessed
Theres nothing i can do know but to advise all of you to buy a screen protector

Yes, and I can recommend the screen protectors from Martin Fields The price is average, but it's like that thing is invisible...no touch screen sensibility problems, scratch resistant and light absorbing...

The only phone I'm having which is scratch proof is the Nokia 8600 Luna. I've never saw another phone without scratches...

well, I don't want to sound like a sales representative, but I really have to admit that I didn't notice any change in touch sensibility (at least I didn't notice it)...I had a HTC Tattoo before and bought the screen protector from Martin Fields also for that one and there also was no change in sensibility...
it's only 0,2 mm thick by the way

Gorilla Glass doesn't sucks... The perception that it is un-scratchable sucks.
Unfortunately this thing is poorly market and no one makes any effort to properly tell you that, altough Gorilla Glass is really harder and really much more difficult to scratch, it is easily scratched by diamonds (well, that is life, diamonds are harder than almost anything) and quartz (which is commonly found on dust and sand). Usually scratches come from friction from jewels with the screen or friction of dust/sand in your pockets or something else with the screen. I can tell you that I take care to not store my phone in dusty places or places where jewels are nearby, and never had any scratch on it, it has even fallen once or twice, screen down.
Mutch better than, per say, my old Nokia E51 (which I love BTW), that had scratchs of just taking it off my pocket and putting it on my pocket...

The main selling point of gorilla glass is its strength, it's really hard to break : It is hard to SMASH AND CRACK. the scratch resistant is just a marketing scheme.

I've never used any type of screen protection and not a scratch. It goes in my pockets dropped it a few times all good. A few nicks on the edges but glass is fine. Gorilla Glass rox!

This "Its awesome Gorilla Glass, dude! No Scratches and cracks never ever" is only marketing. There is every time a way to scratch and break this thingy.
THe first thing I am doing after purchasing a Gadget with a screen like Handhelds or Smartphones is to apply a really top quality Screen Protector. I have a screen protector on my Motorola Milestone and I am really glad that Ive done that.
So, don't trust always the adverts.

I use the matte screen protector from hong kong for like 20cent price and it is virtually without any scratches.
Also it is great because it doesn't attract fingerprints and is easier to swipe upon.
Strongly recommended!

Not me. I will never buy a screen protector. All my phones never had one but all of them looks good as new. If you put your phone in your pocket, Never put anything else and it will be fine.

well i use quite cheap screen protector since a few months, before that, nothing happend to my screen either, but i thought it could be good to make sure it stays like that.
c'mon nothing is indestructible.

I used a screen protector religiously on my old Nokia phone, but my Milestone gets beat up every day with no protector and still looks good. At this point, I would consider Gorilla Glass a plus on the spec sheet, but not necessarily a guarantee that the screen is indestructible. Can't hurt, though.

My phone have for some reason only mini scratches, you can only see them with the right light angle, for somehow it cant get big scratches, I tried on a corner ofcourse

I think gorilla glass is a joke. The first day I had my Motorola Photon, I dropped it and the screen broke in a hundred pieces. Had to get a new one and I promised myself I would be careful.. Didn't install a screen saver because I thought the glass would be like a ceramic crystal on a watch. Well, after three scratches on my glass, I decided to put a screen saver on. AS far as I'm concerned gorilla glass only has one good property. That is it's name. For corning to put their name on this product is a joke. Steve

Im super, super careful with my phones and i did carry my Nexus One with case but without a screen protector.
why? because i knew that accidents happen and a good looking case will help in case i drop my phone.

This is not the nexus one, there our people that got their phone's screen scratch by staring at it.
get a screen protector - clarivue is what im using, no orange peel nor touch issues. Screen looks great! couldn't notice a difference with the naked glass.
(Had also the cheap ones from ebay - yaak!)

I don't think anyone has reported that they scratch their screen YET. The battery cover is a different story tho....

IMO, I would not want to use screen protector. I have used my Hero for over a year without screen protector. Due to it's chin, it never touch the surface. The screen is coated to reduce finger prints (though it does not eliminate finger prints totally it is still pretty good compare to my friends' i phones with screen protector) and since it is curve screen it should not touch the surface when you drag on the table, face down just like my current hero. My nexus S will be arriving in a few days and I don't inted to get one.

+1 for clarivue, you forget it's on your phone after a while.

The Nexus S screen scratches as easily as any other screen, Gorilla Glass or not. If you thought you were safe with the Nexus One, don't buy one for the Nexus S.
It is not the screen that scratches while you look at it, it is the battery cover. So I would recommend a case, but you were already going to buy one I see.
If you really want a screen protector, go with a super clear one like Clarivue or Seidio. But I won't buy one. It is glass after all, and the anti-smudge layer won't work when you have a screen protector, of course.

Pics on page 2 and 3. I've seen this first hand with my first Nexus S. I've since exchanged and my new one hasn't shown this problem so it might have been a defect from the factory since I don't actually know if mine wore off while I had it or if it was like that the whole time and I just noticed it later.

Well the guy who started the topic and exchange his Nexus S three times
was using rubbing alcohol to clean the screen.
i dont know what other chemical he used.

personally I think screen protectors are one of the biggest scams in the cell phone industry

Lol, why would you clean your phone with alcohol or any other chemical, when there is an oleophobic coating on the display? I mean, that's the purpose of the oleophobic coating, right? It is there so you don't need to use chemicals to clean your display...

I don't like to use any case for my phone. I have not been using any case for 3-4 previous phones. Normally the back of the screen start to scarch due to vibration. I never put my phone into vibration when I place it on hard surface. I never put my phone together with other object such as key or coins in same pocket. The only time I use vibration when the phone is in pocket.
Some time I even joke to my friends that hero does not need screen protector because it has built in screen protection (chin that make screen never touch the surface) and even drag it on the table. My NS is arriving in a few days time. I don't think I'll be using any screen protector.

When I bought my Epic 4G a few months ago, I got talked into getting one of the screen protectors they sell at the Sprint Store. I hated it. It made the screen look dull and made it feel not right to touch. I took it off and decided never to buy another screen protector.
Then, I got my SNS and I got a case for it but I was amazed how quickly the screen accumulated fingerprints. I broke down and got Ghost Armor and now, I don't even use the case I bought for it. I love it. The phone feels so great naked and I love it.

The case with the coating coming off isn't necessarily due to using chemicals. If that were the case, the whole screen would've been affected, not just those few spots that were pictured.
My first NS had similar spots being affected and I never used anything on the screen other than a microfiber cloth.

Do I need to buy a screen protector?

I will have this phone in two weeks. Do I need a clear screen protector? Or does it stay looking relatively good?

I also just got this phone and I think you should get one. Better safe than sorry. As this scree. Isn't gorilla glass so I won't really take my chances. In my old captivate and even my i9000 I had one.
Always a good practice and keeps resale value higher when screen is mint.

I vote no screen protector but don't put it in your trouser pocket with a bunch of keys and then sit down - the screen cracks

I don't use a screen protector for the protective qualities, but rather for the antifingerprint features, just makes the device look cleaner, repels glare as well.

You can answer this question yourself. Did you have a screen protector on your previous phone (with glass display)? If not, did you feel safe? If yes, don't buy one for the Nexus S. One screen doesn't scratch faster than another. Gorilla Glass maybe helps a little, but it's there to prevent cracking, not scratches.
Keep in mind that the Nexus S has a curved display. This actually DOES help a lot to prevent scratches, a lot more than Gorilla Glass.

This screen isn't like old ones. Most previous android phones didn't have an oleophobic coating which is far easier to scratch and wear off than the screen itself.
Just take a look at any iPhone 4 that's been used... there will be lots of little micro scratches in the coating but not the actual screen.

I have the full body Zagg one ... i like it..

anything that's going to scratch the screen is probably going to crack it. Although it's not gorilla glass it's pretty tough. i've dropped my phone numerous times face-first, and thanks to the curved display, not one scratch....
however the back is another story. I have numerous large scratches on it... so if you need any protection get a cover. don't worry so much about the screen. i hate those plastic coatings anyway....

I personally like a SP just because, hey, you just dropped some $ on a relatively pricey piece of equipment.
also it depends, do you have one of those nifty belt carrier thingys??? or do you rock it in the pocket, personally my phone stays in my pocket (I should really look into one of those nice padded carriers lol) Its all preference and just how hard on that phone youre gunna be man.

Thanks for all the feedback. I only carry my phone in my pocket. I hate those enclosed cases as aesthetics are important to me too and the cases always make it look clumps. I have never had a clear screen protector before and don't think I'll have one now. Thanks again!

Like most of the people told, I was against a screen proctector. But after using the NS for 1 week, I have noticed 3-4 round oily marks on the screen which I was not able to remove. Then I had to go and replace the handset and had the screen guard purchased right away.

I usually use a screen protector on any phone for:
1. Peace of mind
2. Fingers seem to glide on them easier than bare glass.

Really - oily stains that wouldn't come out? Has anyone else had that issue?
I have a HTC hero I've had a year, no idea what type of screen it is. Aside from finger prints on the screen, thats all that ever happened to it. No scratches or anything!

I did get one but took it off after a while.
Sine the screen has anti fingerprints and is A LOT smoother without a "protector" I choose to take the risk of getting it scratched.
I thought like this. If I have a protector and it gets scratched I still be walking around with a phone with scratches, unless I change me protector shield. But yeah if you get a good protector Shield, I suppose my argument is not valid. Anyways get 2 if you find anything decent !

just got my phantom skinz in the mail for my new nexus s 4g. cannot wait to actually use the phone when i get it this week.

Scratches

So I love my galaxy note and I'm a bit paranoid about scratches to it.
Now I think you would need to use the s pen to enjoy the full experience but I'm afraid to scratch it when there might be sand or other material between the tip and the screen.
If I clean the screen and the pen with my shirt everytime I use it am I safe then?
Today I went to my local store to get some more info and if it would affect the screens accuracy and he told me if Samsung sells them for the note I could be sure that it wont affect it because it would otherwise generate to much complaints.
And they generally cost 10 euro there and ive seen some that cost 50$ on the internet so what could be the difference and is it worth it?

I never liked screen protectors myself but I changed my mind after I made a scratch on the screen using the pen
you could go for a screen protector but they are prone to indents and scratches while using the pen so I don't know if you'd like it
then again you could get the sgp screen protector made of real glass but they are expensive . Costs around 40 bucks

I personally use a screen protector, cheap and easy to replace, sure it might affect the use of the pen slightly (pen doesn't glide as smooth) but ive been sketching and taking notes with the pen and a screen protector fitted from the day after i bought my Note and can honestly say its not as bad as some people would have you believe.

Anything abrasive that can get between pen and screen can also get between your finger and the screen, therefore you're just as likely to get scratches from your finger as you are from the pen, I personally use a screen protector but that gorilla glass is good stuff and unless you slide it across the floor your unlikely to get any deep scratches just from day to day use.

I got a tiny scratch on my screen and I've no idea how as I only every put my phone in my jeans on its own. On top of this I was using a flip cover. I have now relegated the flip cover to my drawer as I found that I was getting tiny abrasions all over the bezel (especially on the corners) simply from the act of repeatedly putting my phone in my pocket. They are really only microscopic and mainly visible when you hold the phone up to the light but still very annoying. I do wish Samsung would choose a matte polycarbonate material instead of those stupid glossy plastic nonsense. Anyway, rant over. I DEFINITELY would use a screen protector and a more holistic case than the - frankly - useless flip covers unless little scratches don't bother you at all.

i wouldnt worry too much, as somebody else said that gorilla glass is tough. i only had my note a week so cant really comment but i had a galaxy s for almost 2 years (also gorilla glass screen) never had a screen protector and it was always in my jeans pocket with loose coins keys n lighters n after 21 months it has 2 of the tiniest scratches i have ever seen

Just get a screen protector, no need to worry about abrasive, tiny particles (i.e. Sand) getting stuck on tip of finger/S Pen and scratching your screen.
Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant, not proof!

Is it really necessary to have a screen protector?

I've had my Note 8 for 9 days now and while I was thinking about buying a screen protector when it arrived, I must admit that I'm quite impressed by the quality of the screen. It just feels so hard to scratch, so much so that one would probably struggle trying to scratch it even on purpose. I don't really see myself scratching it by accident anytime soon, although I must admit I'm this kind of guy who never drops the phone and handles it with extreme care.
I'm just curious to read what you guys think, maybe somebody persuades me to buy a screen protector after all, who knows.

The Gorilla Glass 5 is more shatter-resistant than previous versions and that means it is softer also. I had my Note 7 only a few days before it started picking up micro scratches on the front and back. Your mileage may vary. I'm putting on a Whitestone done and a skin on the back of mine.

Many of us do fine with no protection. Others report getting scratches no matter how hard they try not to.

I've always put a protector on my previous phones but I'm using my Note 8 without a screen protector. Like you, I'm always very careful with my phone and never drop it. The pocket that I put my phone in only contains my phone; I never put loose change or key in there. My Spigen Slim Armor case protects most of the phone and keeps the screen off the table surface if I do put it face down. With all of the issues people have had with curved tempered glass screen protectors, it just seems like more hassle than it's worth. The only one I'd get is the Whitestone Dome but that costs $60 here. Bit pricey.

I always run a protectors. Better safe then sorry.
I take very good care of my stuff. If a scratch did happen you cant take it back. So there would be no way ti fit it without buying a no front glass or new phone.
With a protector you can simply remove it and put on another one.

It's def worth it. On my S8 there was a scratch after few days and I am very careful about my phone so really don't know how it happened.

Same here...it is so minor and you cannot even feel it. Babied it too. Also a small one on the back and it had a case day 1. Something tells me it came like that

Going naked for now. Just watch out for sand, fine sand , seems to be the only thing. If it was a flat screen I would have tempered glass on it.

ANY sharp instrument will scratch if the point is pressed in to the display, period. It is MUCH easier to bang on it with a long blade edge and look like you did nothing than the tip of an x-acto knife. That is what those demos do. Resisting attack across a large area is really what you are seeing. Keys are small like that etc...
Finally, a big part of Gorilla Glass is that it also HIDES or better put doesnt show minor damage as much as other glass. In other words, its there you just don't see it.
I bet a screen for this will be $300-$400. How much is a protector that looks good?

Better safe than sorry. Once it's scratched it would bug the hell out of me. It's a £1000 device.

Throw a screen protector on it. In time, micro-scratches will appear on your screen if you dont!

Note FE, had it on the ironing board (and forgot about it). Folded the ironing board and it very gently slid down it onto the floor face down....very gently....resulted in a 7mm scratch.
Not got one on this yet but it does highlight how pathetically weak GG5 is.

I put one on from iq shield...works great with my ringke wave

Since its a huge pain to find a glass protector that fits and doesn't screw up touch sensitivity I just grabbed the $8 Skinomi wet install protector, works great including with the edge display and S-Pen.

I believe the micro-scratches are not the actual "glass" screen itself. It's the oleophobic coating that we see scratched.

I personally really don't get the mentality of people who put huges cases and screen protectors on their phones. Most people here are obsessive on having 'the latest' and upgrade yearly when new stuff comes out so they can have the nicest, thinnest, prettiest shiny piece of hardware - Then they go wrap it all up in a thick rubber/plastic case and make it look sh*t. Why buy a device with no bezel if you're gonna put a huge thick case bezel around it!
I've had all my smartphones without cases/screen protectors as that's how they're meant to be and to honest I look after my devices. I usually get 2 year contracts on phones and at the end of 2 years, worst case, a few micro scratches on the screen - That's it. Do these guys bubble wrap their cars? It's a phone, it's designed to be used, it'll get the odd small scratch, just enjoy it for what it is IMO.

I have dropped my Pixel XL and the screen protector cracked but the screen was fine. Same on my Nexus 6. Dropped it on it's face from about 5' and the screen protector cracked all over it but the screen remained crack free. I fell that a glass screen protector takes the abuse of a drop. Granted, I've never dropped a phone with a screen protector so not sure if they would have cracked the screen without a protector but to me, It used to be relatively cheap protection. Some of the better protectors are 40+ now so it's not as easy a decision as it used to be for me.
