[Q] So confused. Is there a way or not? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there folks!
Im getting mighty confused about this flashing thing.
Im looking to change my ROM to something else then the ICS from Samsung.
Here is the deal.
I read the warning posts and it say (what i think it means) that my build "XLP9" ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung is not safe to do anything on.
I look around on the net to see if there is a way (despite what i read here).
It looks promising.
But all the things i find is ether a lower version of Android (like 2.3.x) or someone is telling me about tons of stuff to download and do before.
So this is were i ask you all.
Do (been searching for 2 days, perhaps my search terms are bad) anyone know if there is a working way to for me to change my version to AOKP for e.g without destroying my phone?
Like i said before, my Build is: XLP9, android version 4.0.3 (from Samsungs update service).
Phone is rooted using CWM.
Its a Note version for the .EU market bought like a few weeks ago (came with 2.3.x i believe).
If you know a thread that contains step by step instructions that will allow me to change the rom, please post it to me here.
Or if I´m screwed for updating to ICS just tell me so to
Cheers

Hello again.
Yet another day and cant locate any information that im after.
So i tought perhaps there is a way to downgrade the phone back to the factory settings (not ICS).
But since i did the upgrade to ICS is the old rom still on the phone?
I mean to reset it back (same as thode recovery discs on a computer).
Any help or points in the right direction is helpfull at this time.
cheers

Now that you have upgraded to ICS. Those are the factory settings.
Easiest way to downgrade to GB Is by flashing a stock GB rom via pc Odin.

Most of the new ICS custom ROMs now just require you to install AbyssKernel 4.2, then select advanced options and select reboot recovery. Then you wipe your device (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). From this moment you're free to flash. It all takes less then a minute if you hurry (joking, don't rush when flashing your phone), and it's not very complicated. Do it once and you'll know it's simple.
You need to have a root access first. Plenty of guides how to do it out there.

[Q] Updating Note to ICS/JB from Gingerbread (Custom ROM)

Hello,
I have a Galaxy Note (GT N-7000) with this ROM (I'm not sure if I have the lite or the full version, a friend installed this on my phone a long time ago).
I attached a screenshot of the about screen if that helps in any way.
I want to update my device to ICS or to JB (if JB is possible in my case, read below).
I'd like to keep all the TouchWiz stuff (S Note, S Memo, S Planner and all that crap), so I need a Stock-based ROM I guess.
Also, I've read that most of the ICS/JB custom ROMS are infected with something (I didn't quite understand with what exactly, but in any case, I did understand that it's likely to hard-brick the phone). Therefore, I'd like a noob-safe way to upgrading if possible, and if not, I'll be more than appreciative if someone could maybe guide my through with it, as I've never flashed a ROM before.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Please let me know if you need any further identification of the phone and I'll try my best to provide it.
P.S
I'd like to keep the data (or back it up then restore, if that's of any help, same result I guess..) from my current installation (Apps, Contacts, Calendar, Memos, etc) if that's possible.
just connect it to samsung kies on he computer and it will upgrade he phone to the latest available firmware. ics only
updating via kies will keep ur data intact as well
offical jb for note is still on the wait

I tried that, but Kies told me: "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies", that's why I went here (sorry, forgot to mention that in my original post).
I guess it's because I'm using a custom ROM (although it's based on a stock one, it's still a custom).
Ok then go to www.sammobile.com and download a gingerbread rom of ur region and flash it via pc odin. then it should revert back to original firmware and then u can update using kies

Since your current ROM was flashed by your friend, I assume that you have no idea how to start it. You may correct me if I'm wrong.
You should try to read this thread first before start to upgrade your device. All credits go to dr. Ketan for his helpful thread. I'm just helping you to find the thread.
It should be enough for you to upgrade your device to ICS latest official stock ROM.
You don't need to worry about the major problem in ICS, as long as you don't do any full wipe (data wipe) on the ICS stock kernel, then you are fine. Problem in ICS is only its original stock kernel when you do a full wipe, then the eMMC cap brick bugs will occur.
As for the "craps" which you have mentioned before, It will always be included on the original stock ROM from samsung, and the latest firmware even come with ChatON and Flipboard (additional 2 "craps" from Samsung).
Try to read the dr. Ketan thread first for you to understand the step by step in detail. If you need another noob-friendly thread, you may refer to this thread, all credits go to azzledazzle to summarize under his thread.
As for JB updates, you may forget it at the moment. It will not coming very very soon (like in 1-2 days). So you may want to feel a bit better environment in ICS before you start to use JB (when the update comes to us).
You still can post back here if you do not understand.
Good Luck!
edit :
You may want to export your contacts to external SD card / merge with Google first (backup), and also backup your SMS/MMS. You can use a 3rd party app from google play to backup your SMS to external SD card as well.
Reason : It is always advisable to do a clean installation when you are migrating from GB to ICS. Normally you should do your full wipe under GB first, and then you may continue flashing the ICS (Reminder : do your full wipe in GB, don't do it under ICS stock kernel).

Thanks for the helpful comment, and after seeing the thread, I saw that there are a few regions for the firmware for some reason, and would appreciate if someone could explain to me why, and also, how do I choose the one that's right for me? My device was bought from the UK (from Clove.co.uk if anybody knows it), and I'm not sure what regions it belongs to, nor did I see my region in the list (Israel).
Any help on the matter will be most appreciated.
Bump
Would highly appreciate if someone could help out with this one. So far I'm stuck on the upgrade due to not understanding the region thing, and not finding anything about it anywhere on xda:

[Q] Android jellybean 4.1 / 4.2?

Hello developers from XDA!
I have three questions that I was hoping you guys could answer.
First off, I own a Samsung Galaxy S GT i9000 and I'm currently running on 2.3.6 gingerbread XXJVU rooted.
I have been searching EVERYWHERE for a stable jellybean 4.1.2 ROM for my phone, but there are so many and the instructions are very complicated, resulting me into not really understanding how to flash it..
I have earlier tried to flash and ICS ROM which hugely failed. Flashing the stock rom & rooting it went succesfully, but after trying to install the rom from the recovery menu it didn't work. The result was that it was taking nearly up to an hour to start up. I had taken the battery out the phone and restarted before I waited so long. (Yes, believe it, or not. I have seriously waited an hour for it to start up. It just didn't want to.)
So my questions:
Do any of you from XDA developers know a STABLE jellybean rom which has most of the features available? For instance; calling, SMS, Wi-Fi, 3G, Play Store, USB acces etc.
I've heard that "Cyanogenmod 10" was a good one..
Second question is: IF any of you could provide me with a link to a rom (hopefully as I mentioned before Cyanogenmod 10) can you please provide a link with instruction on how to flash it? I really don't want to spend around 30 minutes to find out what I must do.
Also, I've heard that it's not a good idea to go from 2.3.6 to 4.1.2 instantly. I actually want to take the chances and go to Jellybean instead of first flashing and ICS rom.
And as for my last question: I will of course do a nandroid backup in recovery. But, if the jellybean rom fails to flash will I still be able to use that backup? As I mentioned before, I failed flashing an ICS rom. But when I did my recovery menu changed? It went from ClockWorkMod to a different one with a different colour. I haven't really looked at the backup files in the new recovery menu, but if I flash the jellybean mod I assume my recovery menu will change from CWM to CM, and resulting (I think) removing the backup files?..
If neccessary I'll post my entire device information:
Device information:
Model number: GT-I9000
Android version: GINGERBREAD_MR1 2.3.6 (SDK 10)
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-i9000XXJVU-CL851880
Buildnumber: GINGERBREAD.XXJVU
I hope these questions could be answered!
Thanks in advance.
P.S.: Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.
Hey,
so first of all I'd recommend Mackay ROM 1.5.9 which is based on CyanogenMod 10 but tries to stay as close as possible to stock Jelly Bean. You can find it in the development section.
To your second point: Go on CM9 first (twice!) then flash a clean CM10 and afterwards finally Mackay. If you got questions regarding that, you can ask me ofc But to be honest you have to read and try a bit to get into these things. I can explain a lot but you have to think yourself before doing something
Best regards

Alternatively you could just do a factory reset and flash CM10 Fishears since it uses the same partition layout as stock, avoiding the need to flash middlemen and format drives.

Should I get an old Note 1 at this point?

Hey guys, the thing is I tracked down a Note 1 running 4.0.4 unroot, but is running terribly at this point. I think it is due to so many apps install and present on the homescreen. It is available for 'bout $200 (all my budget, in South East Asian it's pretty big, so bear with me). If I get it, I'd definitely flash it to 4.1 or newer, as I can't bear the lag on 4.0 now.
So, any advice on whether I should get it? Is the thing flashable? I mean, I have an Galaxy tab 10.1 so I'm kinda familiar to flashing, but as the newcomer, I'd like to ask is there any difficulty flashing this thing, anything I should be aware of before bricking it?
Thanks in advance guys! All advice is greatly appreciated!
Yes, it very easy to flash Note

It's very very easy to flash Note..... Just buy it....:good: :highfive:
thanks! Well, done a little reading today. And I got something about the "super brick bug" which seems rather dangerous. Anyone cares to elaborate on this for me please?

If you follow the ''HOW TOO's'' then you should not get any brick or issues. I flashed so many Rom- and Kernel's and i never got a brick.
Alwas be on a Safe Kernel. More information is on the General N7000 Forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1347
The previous owner is a 10th grader I tutored, I doubt he knows anything 'bout root or flashing so I think that's not the trouble here. One thing on my mind is that in my country there's still no JB 4.1 OTA yet, at least not until some weeks ago. So, after some basic reading, I got something planned out:
_ Never factory reset while on stock ICS => I should push stock JB through Odin =>safe kernel => push CWM through Odin =>root =>flash some CM goodness
Hell, if stock JB is smooth, I might even stop at rooting.
Basically, that's the right order of this, right?
Somebody better stop me before I mess up something. Haha
Oh, I'm late to the party so what rom can you guys recommend, help me save some time shopping here.

I'd say don't take your chances by going the short way. To be sure you could flash a safe kernel through Odin and then use it's CWM to wipe and flash your stuff. That's what I've done when I got my note and never even got close to the brick bug.
If you really don't understand bullocks of android, just follow carefully the instructions on Dr. Ketans guide thread and you should be fine
Feel free to PM me if you need help

By "bricking", you meant soft brick or boot loop, didn't you? Couldn't imagine a device bricked twice in its life.
Well, let's just presume I'm on stock ICS unroot with unsafe kernel. First I can flash Philz's kernel and CWM (all in one zip file) in stock recovery. That means with that I'm rooted + safe kernel +CWM, then free to factory reset, wipe or flash anything, right?
Couldn't find back which thread says "Never factory reset on stock ICS", I swear I saw it somewhere in these N7000 box.
Oh, and I'm from Vietnam, but I don't understand what my location has anything to do with this, as most Android devices in Vietnam use US firmware.

Yup. That's a safe procedure. It's important you don't wipe anything while you are at your stock kernel. Only after you flashed the safe kernel AND REBOOTED TO THE NEW RECOVERY

[Q] upgrade to cyanogen 10.2

Hello guys,
I have a samsung gt-i9000 with cyanogen 10.1.3 and a few days ago I had experienced some problems, the home button stopped working. I tried quite a few things, based on the info I found on this site and others (like factory reset), but no joy.
SO I thought to myself, better reflash the ROM, but to be honest, if I do that, I might as well install the latest one (10.2.1), and so I decided to do that, but before I start I have a few questions:
I had a look around but I couldn't really find a definite answer to the following questions, so I thought I might post here.
1)Has anybody encountered any issue on the gt-i9000 with the latest ROM?
2)Can I backup all my apps, upgrade the ROM and then reinstall everything from the backup, rather than downloadeing all the apps again? I have never done that before, so I am not sure if it is possible
3)I had a look at the cyanogen mode site and found the relevant info http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd, but I was wondering something: occasionally on my phone a message appears
and asks me whether I want to update the ROM to the latest available one. I have always dismissed that, but I am thinking, can I do the upgrade from there without going through the trouble of reflashing
it (following the instructions above), or is it essentially the same thing?
4)In the instructions it says "The install guide assumes the Galaxy S is running Android 2.3.". Now, last time I have upgraded - from cyanogen 7 to 10.1 - I attempted to install directly 10 over 7 and things
went horrible wrong. I then reflashed the ROM to 2.3 and then installed cyanogen 10.1 and it was OK. DO I have to do the same thing again and install 2.3. first and then 10.2? If so where do I get 2.3 from?
Thanks
Sorry, can somebody move this under questions, just realized that this isn't the right place.

1) Didn't use CM, been on OmniROM
2) You can use Titanium Backup
3)Yeah, you could do that, update it via CMUpdater
4)Just before you install a ROM with a higher android Version, always wipe /system partition.
cool thanks!

I9000 - Newby to rooting

Hi peeps,
So I've read the FAQ, Sticky's and searched newby posts but never rooted a phone before so would be nice to bounce ideas off people before I brick the thing.
I'm rooting because I want to upgrade the OS, try the google DNS settings to see if it improves browsing speed and increase all round performance.
I always felt the hardware should be capable of more and now I want to see if it is!
I've tested download mode and seen the shiny yellow droid! :cyclops:
What I want to do is find the newest stable optimised OS for my device and practice rooting/customising before I move on to messing with my more valuable tablet.
I've read that IceCream Sandwich runs really great with low memory usage, do you guys cosign ICS as the best for I9000?
I also want to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware. Does anyone know which apps I can't remove because they might damage the device?
Found a guide to increasing RAM and processor speed by entering codes! Has anyone done this? Is it legit?
icantpostlinks.3arabfuture.com/2014/11/Samsung-Android-accelerate-and-strengthen-the-processor-and-ram.icantpostlinks
(you'll have to swap icantpostlinks for the www and html to check out the guide. It's written in Arabic but google did a good translation)
I've come across a ridiculous amount of ways to root my phone, has anyone tried the one click root app stuff?
The Odin tool looks good for flashing and they recommend using an 'Android cable'. Are there any issues with using other USB cables?
[EDIT: It doesn't look like Odin has a Mac version. Is anyone aware of a Mac alternative?]
Lots to talk about with this rooting stuff!
I had the official rom Gingerbread (works fine), custom roms Ice Cream Sandwich (so much better than the previous one), Jelly Bean (was just as good as ICS, maybe better), although this has been a while ago.
Kitkat was laggy. I haven't tried Lollipop. I did flash mine to Marsmallow, surprisingly it's seems faster than Kitkat.
Honeycomb was made for Tablet devices.

Honeycomb was made for Tablet devices.

Wow Marshmallow was quick? I wouldn't mind checking out the multiscreen feature from Lollipop but more importantly I just want everything to be stable. I like the Notification feature from Jellybean so I'm tempted to start from there although it probably depends on which ROM you use, I suppose some will be better than others.
Did you delete any of the Samsung Apps?

If you flash custom rom on your phone you will lose all the Samsung Apps anyway. I think it wil be laggy if you tried the multiscreen feature, I think you mean the multitask function?
Jellybean is good, go for it I would say. Just follow the guides and you should be good to go. If you do happen to brick your device you can unbrick it with an unbrick tool.
I rooted and flashed various roms through the years from different creators, it has been a while ago though. I had to go back to stock rom because mine was rebooting on its own when it was on standby. It doesn't happen anymore but I need to root it again Glad it was not hardware issue.
I will go for Marshmallow again. I have only tested a little bit and I was satisfied so far. I will use this phone as a Music Player though
Edit: Maybe your account is too new to post links (not too sure) I haven't tried it myself. My account is new though.

You're right, no links allowed yet. Thanks for the tips man I think I'm ready to give this a go. I might have to do this on a Mac with a Windows virtual machine, bit of a hassle but I haven't found a mac version of Odin yet. Do they have links to ROM's here?

You can use the search function on this forum. You just search for the rom and confirm it's for your device. You can also google it, some guides should lead to this forum but there are plenty of other websites with guides. I have used guides from here and from other websites, unfortunately I don't remember which sites and which roms (from which creator) I have used in the past.
I don't know if there is an Odin for Mac version, but yea you can try it in virtual machine or bootcamp.
Edit: Before you root, is your phone on Gingerbread? (I ended up doing this one, after this you can root with a different method)

If it's older than Gingerbread you can follow the steps in Section C to root (I tried this one but SuperOneClick stopped responding everytime and then it was active again, then stopped responding) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647890
Root + Jelly Bean (requires Gingerbread)

[I did this one]
Or follow this site to root but you do need Gingerbread installed on the phone.

Cheers KHazuya I'll check out those links and try that later. I've already got Ginerbread but I find it a bit laggy tbh. I hope I can get my essential apps working on Jellybean if not then I might try Marshmallow.

The essential apps should be working on it unless it's designed for a newer android version.
After many attempts I managed to get all the flashing done (because it didn't always wanted to proceed for some reason, back then when I did it, it went smoothly. This time I had to search for the guides and files). My phone which I rooted and flashed long time ago, had some issues with randomly reboots when it was on standby so I went back to stock and it didn't happen anymore.
So from Rooted and Custom rom back to > Stock rom (Froyo) > Official update to Gingerbread > Root + CWM Recovery > ICS > Kitkat > Marshmallow
For some reason my router doesn't show up in the list, I see other routers though but I can connect my phone to my router by pressing the WPS Button (it happens on ICS, Kitkat and Marshmallow on my phone). After my router was turned off and on, my phone could detect the router. So it's all good now.
Well this phone will be my Music Player so it will have its uses and I don't need to buy an iPod or something
