Are you using a kernel - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Stock? Bricked? Xenon? They seem a bit outdated and people seem to be having some issues in the thread, should I stick to the one that comes with CM9?

I have never used a different kernel. I dont see the point when we can already overclock the stock one and it runs super smooth already.

For more smooth experience gpu overclocking its more important than CPU overclocking!

Real life has a way of getting between the things you wanna do and have to do, that's why I had a little kernel dev pause, but I am back since a week as the Sensation kernels show you. The touchpad is 2nd on my TODO list, the OneX is next up.

That would be great, for some reason Every rom is always at some point randomly causing reboots, no overclock
Can't find out why

Debating on overclocking my phone

I have a samsung captivate, it runs fine but like everyone I'd like it to be a little faster. Now I've been reading into the whole overclocking thing and it sounds awesome but I'd like to get some of your opinions first. There is a app that you can download that allows you to overclock it fairly easily, but I just don't want to kill my phone. What are your opinions? And if you monitor your temp and don't let it get to high, you'd think that I'd be just as safe as if it wasn't overclocked. I've read people having their phone get to 160 degrees, mines not overclocked yet but the highest I've been able to manage is around 110. If I were to overclock, can you give me a idea at what your temp is? And at what temp should I lay off it for a while, thanks.

TBHIMO , i wouldn't overclock because it's fast enough even at 800Mhz (what i'm running at) . i like having a longer lasting phone .
BUT if you are not content with 1Ghz , then i think you should flash a kernel with Xan's Undervolting App compatible and overclock so you can undervolt at higher clock speeds .
not too sure what the temps would be when overclocked since i never OCd my phone . OCing decreases the battery life of the processor FYI .
Okay thanks for your opinion. Like you I also don't want to decrease my phones lifespan. But I have also read people saying if your phones temp stays normal that it does not harm your phone anyway at all. Looking to get a few more opinions.
I tried it and couldn't be patient enough to get it stable even at 1200MHz, so I left it as is. It's quite fast already, but needed to try it out to make sure I wasn't missing out. To be honest I was more interested in UVing the phone to increase my already good battery life on Serendipity.
Most if not all Captivates can do 1200Mhz at stock voltages. This will however raise your temps just a bit, hence the reason to UV.
If I were you just try it at 1200 and see where that gets you. If you can get that going, you can always write down your settings and push it a bit further. Here's the oft-circulated guide to OCing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10936691&postcount=1102
If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then be happy knowing your phone is plenty fast already
Okay, thanks for the link. I just read the comments on the overclocking app in the marketplace and everyone saying its made their phone run way smoother and that they recommend it to everyone so I'm just trying to see if its really worth it.

umm, you aren't running stock right? You have to be running a kernel that supports oc/uv
Overclocking is very safe specially at 1.2 where I have not seen any kernels going crazy with voltages for example.
Like someone mentioned, the overclocking tool wont do anything unless you have a kernel capable of overclocking though.
My favorite for froyo is Paragon but Suckerpunch or Onix are good too.
For CM7 my favorite is Trident so far.
Not everyone needs the extra speed but if you feel you do, give it a show and dont be scared about killing the CPU. If you see your phone going over 50C then I would back down but I have only seen mine go like to 56C once with one single kernel that was way too voltage happy at high speeds lol

If you are still on stock, I would suggest doing some research and flashing a custom rom, that will give you a different kernel, plus a lot of other performance tweaks, maybe just enabling a lagfix to convert the file system to Ext4 is all you would need instead of overclocking.

All I have done to my phone so far is download adw launcher ex from the market place. I'm not familiar with flashing roms just yet. Might give it a shot tonight its not to hard. Roms seem to be the popular thing for the captivate.
Well, my cappy is 2 weeks old, I'm running Serendipity and LOVING it. Do a lot of reading b4 doing any rom's. It's not that simple. I suggest titanium back up, from the market, as well as rom manager. Back up ur apps. I just flashed paragons kernel, search this site for it. It had 3 or 4 versions of it from stock to oc'd to 1400. I started with a 1280 oc and now running 1360? Approx. I am blazing fast and no problems at all. If you have a custom rom oc'ing shouldn't be an issue, just read, read, read. Good luck.

Yeah flashig roms is extremely popular and for good reason...you wont be believe how much better the phone can be until you try a custom ROM. As for lagfixes...I am not a big fan because I feel that when 2.2.1 roms started to show up the lag fixes did not make much difference and for me in cases made things worst. The best lag fix by FAR I have used is the actual CM7 ROM...damn that thing has no lag at all but that is a different level of difficulty to install it...nothing huge but I do this way too often.
A normal ROM is quite easy but READ a lot and ASK a lot before doing it to make sure you have a good experience.
you dont need to overclock unless you do heavy processing, such as running 3d games and emulators. i only overclock when gaming and throw it back down to 1000mhz under normal conditions.

And aside from being a little complicated, CM7 isn't in it final release yet so it will be buggy, which if you are new to Android isn't a good ROM to start with. Check out the Android Development section. The top ROMs (based on visits to their Topics, but not in Order) are Serendipity, Cognition, Firefly, Phoenix, Darky's......there are more but that is off the top of my head.
Darkys is a little complicated for a beginner. Don't forget Continuum. Cezar just released v4.

+1 on trying cognition. If you like the stock look and feel it's a good place to start. I personally dont see much of a difference when I have my phone overclocked to 1500. Maybe thats just me though.
Im running serendipity 6.3 now and I think my phone is very fast. I had an inspire and an atrix and to be honest my captivate is almost if not as fast as they were.

Thanks for all the replies. My buddy has done some flashing before and we are gonna do this process together so I don't mess anything up. We are going with cognition 4.3, looks to be most stable and has the no lag fix and some other cool stuff. The videos that we will be following is for a older cognition, version 4 I believe, the process should still be the same right? Also the videos was published by mobiletechreviews, I believe that he is part of the xda community. So this is what I'm leaning on doing tomorrow when my buddy comes over, but if someone mentions something better we'd definitely like to hear about it. The person that said they prefer wirefly or I think that's what he called it, can you tell me why you like that better? Thanks for the help so far.

Slow

I upgraded my milestone to 2.2.1 since then my phone has slowed down , opening or closing of apps takes time and sometimes it reboots itself , processing has slowed down eventually ,

Try to Hardreset your phone...
I never had an issue like this...
Root it.
SuperCharge it.
Enjoy.
Try overclocking, or preferably try a new ROM already overclocked - that way you will get fresh rom + optimizations + OC = you will be pleased.
You don't even have to use supercharging as many roms already do great without it.
And many are slow as a snail to the point where the phone is unusable...
Not everybody loves clogged memory like you do lol
The guy wants it fast... not slow LMAO
Edit: Actually, you're kinda sorta almost right in some cases... as more and more devs are supercharging their roms
LMAO LOL ROFLLMALMAO
please, point out those which are slow, let us know
Search the forum for "redraw"
You may actually get 1 or 2 hits...
I edited my prior post indicating that you're right in a few cases...

I'm still waiting for those roms which you meant as "slow as a snail"
PS: it is not called supercharging, that's just your script. people used other values even before your "fancy" script.
Ya, but nobody dared to actually fix OOM memory groupings... bub
I even say in my OP... playing with minfrees is NOT memory management...
What I did IS memory management...
I control what goes where and when it gets killed.. that's the only way to do it
An app like AMM or AKMO will let you set minfrees for 6 slots.
That's it.
Big deal.
But stock froyo and stock gingerbread group apps differently nevermind all the different configurations of custom roms.
Hell, CM7 has NOTHING in the third slot.
With AMM you can set slot 3 to 100mb on CM7 and it won't do squat.
Edit: Of course, when I say "slow as a snail" it is my opinion based on a rom unsupercharged as compared to when it is supercharged.
So out of the box, HONO and MIUI are supercharged to begin with at the moment so except for those, all the others would feel slow to me.
To you, EVERYTHING is fast, because you like sloooooooooooooooooooow with lots of apps that you aren't using clogging up memory.
Which is NOT what the OP was asking for

Any luck Overclocking?

Hello, first I just wanted to say coming from a Droid X I LOVE this phone and LTE. I am all rooted and just wanted to know if anyone has had any luck with overclocking the CPU, and if so, how and with what app? I know it's already ridiculously fast, I just wanted to know if it could be done. Thanks
We don't have CWM yet, so no custom ROMs which means no overclock yet.
Oh ok...I knew how to root it but am still learning how a lot of the rest works. Thanks for the info
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
You could do a mild oc in the droid x on the stock rom... 1.25.... I'd take that right now
Is overclocking even necessary? I think it's very fast out of the box.

It isn't about what you NEED to do - it is about what you WANT to do
Does a Ferrari need to top 200?...No, but it's a lot of fun making fast things go even faster and pushing them to their limit (but no it doesn't NEED it lol)
speak for yourselves.... coming from a Sensation... I NEED IT!!! lmao

CWM has really no bearing when it comes to overclocking a phone with a locked bootloader. If you cant change the kernel then you can overclock using CWM. An app like Android Overclock that loads the module once booted is required, that app only needs root and the appropriate module.
So are you saying it is possible right now with the "Android Overclocking" app. I was under the impression there was no OC until we could customize the kernel. Has anyone actually tried and achieved this? I cruise these forums constantly and I have seen no posts touting running 1.5ghz OC'd. I know it's only $1.50 but I don't want to spend that when 1. SetCPU is free (I tried, no OC). Is this comparable or does Android Overclocking get around this somehow?
2. I have doubts anyone is OC'd yet without a whisper here or rootzwiki.
The way I understand it (not a dev but alot of experience with flashing coming from the OGDroid). The kernel has slots (in my experience 5 or 7 slots) where the frequencies are very specifially laid out at like 300, 600, 800, 1.0ghz, 1.2ghz *example*) I am not sure what the specific slot numbers are on the stock kernel but I don't think an app can change kernel function on that level or at all.
Well I've been looking into this for a while and with no luck I've tried severally overclockers, quick clock being my favorite. But none of them work, they will either crash or freeze up, haven't had any crash the divice tho. So far it seems there just isn't enough focus on the clock yet, with cm and 2nd int right around the bend. All in good time

If you want to OC your Bionic join the cause, there are a bunch of us searching for the solution to every rooted Bionic with a locked bootloader...
Re: Android Overclock
Nope, Android Overclock fashes a message on install that states you need a different kernel to OC. Bummer-worked up to 1.3Ghz on my D2, but no joy on Bionic.
Why does anybody need an overclocked dual core processor at this point in the game???
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Like others have stated it's not a need but more of a want. I am in the same boat and would like to work this beast to it's fullest. I have had no lag and no problems but the want to crank the Bionic up is just killing me. Hopefully we will see something soon.
Yea, its not a need.... well at least not yet, eventually this phone will be outdated of course, anyway it woyuld allow for xtream multitasking,

cm9 nightly droid 3 overclock

Ok I've been trying to overclock this phone a nice how to would ne awsome so Iam running cm9 nightly latest from hash of codes I would like to change cpu speed any way to modify this. I'm not new to android but obviosly am no dev how to use terminal emulator to achive this I'm running the dev/tty the not shure what command to use from there. Or possiblie a module or script to run thnx
Some users are finding they're "overclocked" out of the box on the new builds. If I recall correctly speed is bogomips x 2, so you're already 20% faster than some users. This is likely due to TI/Motorola binning the chips, but it may also have been done to prevent overheating elsewhere in the system even if the CPU is capable. All the overclocked ROMs I've seen have gone as far as the 1.2GHz mark so we may be maxed out at this point due to limitations elsewhere.

thnx for the feedback how do i run the commands in terminal emu
I need to see the code for this
But not shure what to type in to bring up The spot where all the data is stored for the cpu commands or to see the kernel info also I can try to determin from there I'm trying to see if not I got the sbf no worries for me at all any who I'm trying to get all the people together to work this lil thing out of cm9 try to get this going for peps who wanna save battery and go faster. I open chmod in terminal but where do Igo from there or if im even going the right direction please help
You are going to have to build it in to your rom or you can use one of TeamHaters CM9 roms. The kexec roms will not support any overclocking at the moment.

Yes, of course, you're sure leading the innovation and development.
You're just a spoiled brat asking for something you don't fully understand.
Overclocking our device is not going to make great differences now or even when it's stable.
To "run 20 things at once" we need RAM, not processor speed.
Overclocking doesn't save battery either.
Why do I even bother.

Some CPU's are marked at e-fuse level to be not stable on speeds higher than 1ghz on the factory, and the kexec kernel seems to be addressing that, according to a comment made on the kexec rom thread.

Spelling isn't the problem. Try some punctuation.
Because cm9 is meant to be stable and fast. Since various devices react differently to being overclocked, it would introduce instabilities in some devices. That's why the performance section of settings in cm roms says, if you change these settings, do not file bug reports. Once kexec cm9 is fully operational, im sure someone will build a oc kernel

Kernels for the Nexus 7

I am opening this thread as I feel there is room for discussion on the amazing Nexus 7 and the incredible Kernels available .. so feel free to post your opinions.
Lets help the newcomers make the appropriate choice (difficult)
Lets talk about
-Performance ( normal usage, gaming..)
-Battery life
-Features
-Device support (internal and external)
-Rom support
-General requests to all devs
At the moment of this writing we can count on
-TRINITY
-MOTLEY
-FAUX123
-STOCK (of course)
-FRANCO
-CLEMSYN'S
-ATLANTIS
-AQUARIA
And the list shall continue and updated
So lets hear your opinions and preferences.
Cheers

I've used stock, cm10's kernel, the faux kernel (briefly), trinity (briefly), atlantis, and _motley's.
I stuck with _motley's. Best kernel I've used on pretty much any device. Superbly fast, linaro-optimized, great voltage tables, incredibly stable, and completely glitch-free
Currently running 1.1.1, undervolted by 100mV, all default clock speeds, interactive/deadline, and a 512MB zRam
Pure butter
Faux's "mainline" kernel releases is a balance of performance and good battery life, undervolted my N7 to -75mV. It's so much better(in my opinion) than the default kernels of stock, cm10 and AOKP. Gaming-wise it's definitely very optimized. I've yet to try other custom kernels. Been a fan of his kernels since from htc one x and now in N7.
Tapatalked from my HOX
I prefer _motley's mostly because I can see most of what was changed/added in the changelog, and it works nicely
Trinity is straight to the point by generally saying what is tweaked, which is nice, but I just like to see what is changed. Also the app for Trinity kernels seemed to show strange behavior when I last used it with settings either not sticking, or changing randomly, but I believe there was a reason for this explained in the thread.
Faux's is nice as well mostly because of the other linux kernel parts used, but doesn't allow for disabling of fsync (while I respect Faux's decision on not allowing the option; I prefer speed over stability) which is pretty much the only reason I don't use it now.

Disabling fsync also saves a decent amount of battery
I just got my N7 four days ago and since I am a flash addict I tried most of them always sticking to the same Rom (EOS) in order to make a fair comparison.
.
I like Trinity very much.. is a no-hassle kernel..but as I was with Faux's magnificent work since the days of the Atrix, I decided to give his newest 008 a shot.
I find it to be well balanced (performance/battery) ..
I have not UVd any. I prefer the dev set of tables and come to a conclusion from his own work.

Call me dumb but how do you turn fsync off? Via an app like system tuner?

I am suprised at the battery performance of Faux's 008. I've been on for more than 6 hours now and I am still at 93%

Trinity is my most used kernel. Battery life is great and performance is right up tgere. I get 90fps in quadrant and it has no GPUoc

For some reason Trinity is having unstable releases lately. I switched to faux's 10 ultimate. Is great.

Well yes, 100 was somehow unstable, then released 110 ( no OC ) and in the past few hours 111 which I haven't tried yet. Franco released r6 as well which I hvent tried either

Certainly you did for those who have your app installed or following your thread closely. It would be easier if you posted new releases eitthr in the OP or thread header.. just a suggestion.
Cheers

thanks for the assumptions, but not true. the kernels are always posted at derkernel.com right away, for those with the app and without. all you have to do is look. or, you can opwn the thread and read it from the last page, youd see that a111 has been out. there is never a kernel released for people with the app first, we do not play that game, that is wrong. it either released to all the public or its not released at all, end of story.

Oh, don't take me wrong.. I am not making any assumptions nor suggesting that you have any kind of preference for those who have the app. No Sir. I have the app but at the moment not being used because I am with another kernel.
When reading der-kernel as I do on a dayly basis, it states ( not the precise words ) "all kernels are 1600 except if stated otherwise in the file name". Good.
Cheers
Oh boy, mud-slinging.. how very xda of you both.

mudslinging? no. im just a firm believer of truth. but, how about the word instigator, you recognize it
we are having a healthy discussion. sometimes people dont agree in discussions, and thats normal. if we did agree, then there wouldnt be a discussion on it. but theres no mudslinging going on at all, and we are being friendly.

"Certainly you did for those who have your app installed or following your thread closely"..
then its i that made the assumption
anyways, the "all kernels are 1600 except if stated otherwise in the file name" is really for all the other trinity kernels for other devices. i do agree with you though, that morfic should change that since the n7 kernels dont have the cpu speed included in the name except for the tsvz kernels(they are all 1400mhz).

K so I've been trying to read up on this kernel business and not had any luck. I don't consider myself super tech savvy but at the same time I'm not an idiot. Could someone tell me what this does? Do I flash it like another ROM? Or just point me in the right direction.
